GLASGOW - Hazel E. Browning, 86, of Glasgow, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at her home.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 12, at the Bell Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in the Highland cemetery.

Floye Pearl Richardson
POWELL, Wyo. - Floye Pearl Richardson, 93, of Powell, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at the Powell Nursing Home.
Visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with interment in the Crown Hill cemetery.

Joyce K. Bartz
Joyce K. Bartz was born Sept. 5, 1929, to David Victor and Gladys Elnora Patterson Endersbe in Lisbon, N.D. She married Wesley D. Bartz, June 3, 1949. They mainly lived in Billings.
She is survived by two children, Sandra (Melvin) Spadt of Auburn, Wash., and Jeffrey S. Bartz of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; her brother, James Endersbe of West Fargo, N.D.; her sister, Judy (Fred) Fahlsing of Grand Junction, Colo.; and numerous friends and neighbors.
Memorial will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 10th St. W. and St. John's. Interment of the cremated remains will take place at Oakwood cemetery in Lisbon, N.D., at a later date. Cremation or Funeral Gallery is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association, 2812 1st Ave. N., Billings, MT 59101 or American Diabetes Association Montana Affiliate, 2525 6th Ave. N., Billings, MT 59101.
As a receptionist and telephone operator for School District 2, Joyce always stated, "My specialty is my job, everyone knows I love it." On Joyce's behalf, her family extends a big hearty thank you for your many kind expressions and thoughtfulness throughout her lifetime.

Martha P. Folsom
Martha P. Folsom went to be with the Lord Jesus on Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Valley Nursing Home. She was born Oct. 31, 1906, in Roxbury, Mass., to William and Charlotte Parsons Troop. Martha and Willard Folsom eloped and were married Sept. 1, 1928, in New York City.
They had four children, Jean (deceased), Richard of Tampa, Fla., Dori of Wild Rose, Wis., and David of Billings; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Willard died Nov. 28, 1990.
A memorial gathering will be held 3 p.m. Monday, June 15, at Valley Health Care Center, 1807 24th St. W., Billings. Cremation has taken place at Cremation or Funeral Gallery and interment will be in Boston, Mass.

Constance E. Piccioni
Constance E. Piccioni, 89, of Billings, passed away June 8, 1998. She was born on Oct. 24, 1908, in Boise, Idaho to Christian H. Lehd and Sophie Goeke Lehd. The family moved to Seattle when she was a child. Connie attended the University of Washington and graduated with a BS degree in Library Science and a BA degree in Sociology.
Connie married Claude Piccioni on June 14, 1942, while she was working for the US Army Library Service at Fort Lewis, Wash.. Connie also worked as a professional librarian in public libraries in Santa Barbara, Calif., Tacoma, Seattle, and Olympia, Wash., as well as at the University of Washington, Oregon State University, and Montana State University (Bozeman). Connie and Claude eventually moved to Billings. Since her retirement in 1972, Connie was involved in many volunteer programs, which included RSVP, Meals on Wheels, and a reading program making tapes for handicapped school children.
Until very recently, Connie was an information person at St. Vincent Hospital. She was also a volunteer at the Alberta Bair Theater, where, with the generosity of her many friends, she earned a name plate for 1,000 hours of service which will be placed on a chair at the theater. Honors for volunteerism include a life membership in the PTA ( 1964) for work to improve safety measures for handicapped students. She was also a recipient of the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award. She was a member at large of the Business and Professional Women and an active member of the Association of University Women. Connie loved to travel and has visited 12 European countries as well as New Zealand and Australia. She has also traveled coast to coast in the U.S., making friends all along the way. Connie was a devoted wife and mother to her four children.
Survivors include her husband, Claude; sons, Steven of Englewood, Colo., Gerold (LeAnn) of Billings; daughters, Kathryn Wood (Danny) of Billings, and Kristine Bond (Randy) of Spokane; and 10 grandchildren, Alana Huck, Kori and Andy Piccioni, Dameon, Aimee, Melissa, and Micheal Wood, Stephanie, Jennifer, and Kimberly Bond.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial mass will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church.
Memorials may be made to AAUW (Billings Branch Endowment Fund) or Big Sky Hospice. Cremation or Funeral Gallery is in charge of arrangements.

Beryl 'Bud' Cummings
MILES CITY - Beryl "Bud" Cummings, 77, died Monday, June 8, 1998, at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.
Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 11, in the chapel at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at the funeral home chapel with interment in the Veterans section in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.

Mary Genie Dowlin
FORSYTH - Mary Genie Dowlin, 78, of Forsyth, died Friday morning, June 5, 1998, at the Rosebud Health Care Center.
"Auntie Mary" was born March 7, 1920, at her beloved ranch on West Armell's Creek, the daughter of Charles and Genie Philbrick Dowlin. It was said that the event of her birth coincided with a memorable and welcomed break in the harsh winter weather. In typical Montana fashion the weather that morning was 20 below and by afternoon had reached a balmy 40 degrees. The family had so many reasons to celebrate that day. She spent her youth on the ranch and attended Trail Creek School graduating from Rosebud High School. She attended Billings Polytech, which is now Rocky Mountain College, for two years, returning to work the ranch at the outbreak of WWII.
She dedicated her life to assisting her mother in ranch operations, and in working for the proper and kind care of all animals. Mary managed a band of sheep, a herd of cattle and paint horses. It was also usual to see an orphan deer, or an injured raccoon, rabbits, a well-fed dog and several cats surrounding her on travels about the ranch.
She was a charter member of the Colstrip Community Church, a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association, the Humane Society, the National Wildlife Association, the Stockgrower's Association and the Northern Plains Resource Council.
She is survived by her sister, Patty Dowlin Kluver of Rosebud Creek; three nephews and their families: Karson and Marie Kluver and their children, Jan, Kathleen, Abner and Freeman; Kirby and Freida Kluver and their children, Coralei, Cortney and Casey; Kelly and Barb Needham-Kluver and Tanner Bell; her niece, Colleen and her husband, Thomas J. Johnson and their children, Erin and Trevor. Mary was preceded in death by her father, Charles Dowlin, in 1934, and her mother Genie Philbrick Dowlin Fulmer in 1979.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 1998, at the Beals Mortuary Chapel in Forsyth. Interment will follow in the Forsyth cemetery. Memorials may be made to one of her member organizations. Beals Mortuary of Forsyth is in charge of the arrangements.

Marlene E. Durbin
LINDSAY - Marlene E. Durbin, 62, of Lindsay, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at the Glendive Medical Center.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 11, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with interment in the Dawson County cemetery, both in Glendive.

Matilda Engi
Matilda Engi, 82, of Billings, died Sunday, June 7, 1998.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at the Smith Downtown Chapel, with interment in the Mountview cemetery.

Lela E. Hall
SIDNEY - Lela E. Hall, 98, formerly of Wibaux, died Monday, June 8, 1998, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 11, at the Christian Fundamental Church in Wibaux with interment in the Dawson Memorial cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is in charge.

Betty A. Kallen
Betty A. Kallen, 69, passed away June 6, 1998, of natural causes at her home in Billings. She was born Nov. 19, 1928, in Big Timber, a daughter of Edward V. and Mabel C. Harper. She was raised and attended schools in Sweet Grass County.
She was married to the late A.N. "Bud" Randall of Hardin and they had two daughters. She later married Theodore "Ted" Kallen of Hysham and they farmed in the Hysham area until retiring and moving to Billings in 1979. Betty especially enjoyed her garden and flowers, fishing trips with Ted, cooking and her needlework.
Betty and her later husband, Ted were actively involved in the N.I.L.E. as well as the Hardin Elks Lodge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted, in 1995; her parents; and one brother, Chuck Harper.
Survivors include her two daughters, Linda Gow and Jere Lee (Carl) Hale of California; Ted's four children, Theresa Daem of California, Andy (Renee) Kallen of Arizona, Toni (Jay) Lawhon of Custer, Pam (Les) Kraft of Billings; and seven grandsons. She is also survived by two brothers, Dick (Darla) Harper of Kansas and Bob (Jean) Harper of Big Timber; six sisters, Catherine Bainter of Grey Cliff, Helen (Ivan) Andrick of Texas, Ginny Fahlgern of Wyola, Mary (Bob) Underwood of Washington, Margaret (Carl) Solheim of Billings and Kathleen (Ronald) Thomas of Hysham; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Hardin Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin is entrusted with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Beatrice Klein
GLENDIVE - Beatrice Klein, age 87, of Glendive, passed away on Monday, June 8, 1998, at the Glendive Medical Center in Glendive. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 11, 1998, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glendive with Father Joseph Ponessa officiating. Vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 1998, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Interment will be in the Dawson County cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale--Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.
Bea was born on Sept. 5, 1910, in Russia, the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Freiss) Koffler. She attended rural Slope County, N.D., schools. She married Joseph Klein on May 27, 1935, in Sidney. Bea had worked as a cook for 15 years at the Sacred Heart Catholic School and for five years at Bair's Cafe in Glendive.
She was a 50-year member of the Catholic Daughters, Royal Neighbors and the Sacred Heart Altar Society. She enjoyed cooking, her church and church activities and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond Klein and his wife, Jeaneen of Billings and Robert Klein and his wife, Peggy of Clancy; two daughters, Angela Vansteel and her husband, Frank of Blanchard, Mich., and Diana Chase and her husband, Wade of Spring Valley, Calif.; one brother, George Koffler of Glendive; one sister, Frances Brophy of Buffalo, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and her special friend, Maggie Zentner.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Barbara Helm; two brothers, Mathias and Jack; and one son, Anthony.

Marietta and Dennis O'Connor
CODY, Wyo. - Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 12, at the Holy Rosary Parish in Bozeman for Marietta, who passed away in January of 1998 and Dennis O'Connor, who passed away in March of 1998. Interment of ashes will follow in the Sunset Hills cemetery in Bozeman.

Ellen Lanier Phelps
BEAVERTON, Ore. - A celebration of life was held Monday, June 8, 1998, in the Portland (Oregon) Audubon Society meeting room for Ellen Lanier Phelps, of Beaverton, who died of stomach cancer at age 49.
She used her maiden name, Ellen Lanier, professionally. She was born May 31, 1949, in Chicago. She graduated from Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colo., and received two master's degrees from Maryhurst College in environmental studies. She moved to Portland in 1978 and in 1985 married James H. Phelps of Portland, son of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Phelps of Billings, Mont.
After a number of years with the Washington Park Zoo, Portland, where she worked in promotion and development, she established GHI2, an environmental consulting firm. In 1987, she was elected commissioner of the Tualatin Valley Water District. She also served on the boards of the City Club of Portland, Portland Symphonic Choir, the League of Women Voters, and the Friends and Advocates of Urban Natural Areas.
She also sang with the Portland Symphonic Choir, Crystal River Opera, Colorado Opera Festival, and the Colorado College Musicum.
Survivors include her husband; son, Nathan Frerichs, daughter, Eugenie Frerichs, both of Portland; brothers, Dr. Keith Lanier of Portland and Dr. Robert Lanier of Cheyenne, Wyo., and their families; three stepsons, and a step-grandson.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Lanier Wildlife Trust Fund in care of Pacific One Bank. Arrangements were by Aftercare Cremation & Burial Service, Portland.

Charles T. Rathbun
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Charles T. Rathbun, 69, formerly of Glendive, Mont., died Sunday, June 7, 1998, in Glendive.
Visitation will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Friends and family will meet from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Glendive. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Price-Helton Funeral Chapel in Auburn with interment the Evergreen cemetery in Enumclaw.

Kathryn A. Tiskus
Kathryn A. Tiskus, 82, of Billings, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Deaconess Hospital.
The daughter of Herbert and Helen Greeley, Kathryn was born Feb. 9, 1916, in Indianapolis, Ind. She moved with her family to Boston, where she was raised and educated.
She married John Tiskus in Boston June 1, 1946. They moved to Billings in 1953.
Kathryn worked as an executive secretary with the Bureau of Land Management for 28 years, retiring in 1985.
She was a member of St. Pius X Church. She enjoyed gardening, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, John of Polson and Bill of Billings; her brother, Bert Greeley of Boston; a sister, Helen Staid of Louisiana; and two grandchildren, Kate and Jenny Tiskus of Polson.
The casket is closed. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Pius X Church with Rite of Committal at Holy Cross cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice.

James Earl Van Campen
JUNEAU, Alaska - Former Missoula resident James Earl Van Campen died June 2, 1998, in Juneau, Alaska. He was born Sept. 6, 1970, at Havre, Mont. He attended schools in Chinook and Missoula and graduated from Sentinel High School in 1988. He worked at various positions in Missoula before moving to Juneau in 1991, where he engaged in the fishing industry and worked with the crews of the Osprey, the Norseman, and the Oahu. James enjoyed all outdoor activities and played his guitar and billiards for recreation.
He is survived by his parents, M. James and Bonnie Van Campen of Reed Point, Mont.; a sister, Sandra (Mrs. Michael) Smith of Kent, Wash.; a sister, Marilyn (Mrs. Maynard) Owns Medicine of Missoula; a brother, George (Thea) of Longmont, Colo.; and a sister, Laura Christey of Juneau. His paternal grandmother, Alice Van Campen of Laurel; and eight nieces and nephews also survive him.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Montana at a later date. Memorials can be sent to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, attention Kim Brown, P.O. Box 8249, Missoula, Mont., 59807, in James' memory.

Arthur L. Williams
BRIDGER - Arthur L. Williams, 76, died Monday morning, June 8, 1998, of natural causes on the Diamond T Bar Ranch on Dry Creek.
Arthur was born on Jan. 18, 1922, at Pavillion, Wyo., a son of Lisle and Minnie Williams. He was raised and educated in the Riverton, Wyo., area, and served in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
After his discharge he returned to Wyoming. On Aug. 8, 1947, he married Marjorie Parker at Grass Range, Wyo. They worked on ranches around Thermopolis for the Hayes Brothers and for Clyde Duncan until moving to Montana in 1951 to work for Marjorie's folks who had purchased the Frank O'Connor Ranch on Dry Creek that spring. Arthur has ranched on the Diamond T Bar since that time.
He personified the western way of life, and truly enjoyed being on a good horse.
Survivors include his children, their spouses and families, Parker and Nancy Williams and Dar, Mitch and Duncan of the family ranch; Shannon and Bill Stovall and Will, Seara and Travis of Roberts; Tom and Val Williams and Eric, Michaela and Jacob of Bridger; Alice Anne and Tom Wipplinger and Jed and Nikki Jo of North Platte, Neb.; and daughter-in-law, Debbie McDonnell and Steve and Buffy Williams of Columbus; one sister, Wanda Lucas of Riverton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Arthur was preceded in death by a son, Mike Williams; a sister, Rhea Paxton; and a brother, Kenny Williams.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 11, in the Olcott Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge.
