Leah Caroline Bertsch
BIG TIMBER - Leah Caroline Bertsch, 90, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at the Pioneer Medical Center.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at Glacier Memorial Gardines in Kalispell, Mont. Lowry Funeral Home is in charge.

George Bohl
On June 5, 1998, George Bohl, farmer, rancher, father, and friend, was received into the loving arms of the Lord. George died in the Salt Lake City Burn Center from injuries received following a farm accident on May 19, 1998.
The great love of his life was Ada Clarice Ewen, whom George married on June 10, 1944, in Worden. To this life partnership was born daughter, Joy (John) Howard of Huntley; daughter, Jeanne (Stuart) Kronemeyer of Ceresco, Mich.; son, G. Edward (Heidi) Bohl of Tenino, Wash.; son, Bill Bohl of Blackfoot, Idaho; daughter, Darlene Bohl of Enterprise, Ala.; and son, Darell (Susan) Bohl of the family farm in Pompeys Pillar. In addition to his wife Ada of Pompeys Pillar and their children, George is survived by his 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; his sisters, Ann Leithead of Fishtail, Betty Seiffert of Billings, and Rose Brandon of East Helena; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Pete; his sisters, Esther, Margaret, and Charlotte; and his beloved grandson, Andrew Kronemeyer.
Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel in Billings. Funeral services will held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the Bethlehem Congregational Church in Worden. Interment will follow in the Pleasantview cemetery in Ballantine. Memorials in George's name may be made to the Bethlehem Congregational Church of Worden, or the Worden Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Department.

Arthur 'Cliff' Buell
BIG TIMBER - Arthur "Cliff" Buell, 86, of Big Timber, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at the Big Timber Pioneer Medical Center, following a short illness.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, June 9, at 2 p.m. at the Big Timber Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Chuck Nicholson of Livingston.
John Dostal
John Dostal, 48, died of pancreatic cancer at his home in the loving arms of his family on Saturday, June 6,1998.
John was born in Geraldine, Sept. 24, 1949, the son of Elmer and M. Patricia (Carr) Dostal. He attended Nelson School (the country school) for six years before attending two years in Geraldine. John then went on to Assumption Abbey in Richardton, N.D. After receiving a BS in chemical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, he continued his education at the University of Montana Law School. In 1975, John obtained his Jurist Doctorate. From there he went on to get his LLM degree in 1984 from the McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, Calif.
John began his law practice in Missoula, which included working as a public defender. In 1984, he moved to Billings and continued his work as a tax and real estate attorney with Brown Law Firm.
On Aug. 28, 1976, he was united in marriage to Susan Olsen. They began married life in Missoula and in 1984 brought their relationship to Billings where the family still lives today.
John's greatest joys in life stemmed from spending time with his family, both immediate and extended. Recreations included baseball, gardening, hiking, and football. In his college days, John played rugby.
Acting as a visionary for many volunteer organizations in the community, his labors produced many expansions for the Billings Food Bank and the Moss Mansion Preservation Society; serving time as board president for both. He also worked as a baptism and marriage counselor for his church. John showed all of us how tireless work can benefit everyone in a society. "Christ did not come into the world to be a king, but just to be a servant. And so let us take a moment of silence to remember who we are, why we are here, and who we are serving," was a quote that John tried to live by everyday of his life.
Survivors of John's family Include his wife Sue, of 22 years; and their four children, Nathan (16), Daniel (14), Mark (11), and Rebecca Rose (9). Other family survivors are comprised of his mother, Pat and his many siblings, Sister Mary, Frank (Gay), Robert (Kathy), Paul, Patricia (Jay Eklund), Margaret (Kevin Vaughn) Elizabeth (Bill Thompson), and Veronica (Bart Adao) from whom he has many nieces and nephews. John also had numerous close personal friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer.
This obituary was written with love by Nathan Dostal. We'll miss you Dad.
There will be a remembrance of John's life at a prayer service 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 11 at Dahl Funeral Chapel. The celebration will continue at the Moss Mansion from 6-9 p.m. with food, formal storytelling and partying. A Funeral Mass will be at Holy Rosary Parish 11a.m. on Friday, June 12, followed by a luncheon in the church basement. Memorials may be mode to the Dostal Children's Education Fund, c/o Brown Law Office. P.O. Drawer 849, Billings, Mont. 59103-0849.

Jeff W. Ellis
LEWISTOWN - Jeff W. Ellis, 83, of Lewistown, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center, of natural causes.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at the Cloyd Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in Central Montana Memorial Gardens.

Richard H. Gruel
Richard H. Gruel, 68, of Billings, passed away at St. Vincent's Hospital on June 5, 1998, after a long illness. Dick was born in Great Falls on July 15, 1929, to Walter W. and Sylvia E. Gruel. He was the youngest of five children. He grew up on the family farm near Portage. He attended the one room school at Portage, grades one through eight. He graduated from Great Falls High School in 1947. Dick was a very inventive man. He installed the first hydraulic lift on the grain box of the family farm truck at the age of 13. He had a keen instinct of anything mechanical. If it was broken, he could fix it even if he had never seen it in working order. Dick spent his early years working the family farm with his father and brother.
In 1951, Dick was drafted into the Air National Guard and served with the 146th Fighter-Bomber Wing stationed at Moody Air Force Base, Valdosta, Ga. and George Air Force Base, Victorville, Calif. He was honorably discharged Jan. 8, 1954. He married Thelma Haney Terribilini July 25, 1952, in Las Vegas, Nev.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sylvia A. Gruel and grandson Byron W. Gruel.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma; sons, Ronald J. Gruel (Peggy) of Billings, Richard K. Gruel (Elaine) of Butte; daughter: Sandy L. Dorsett of Missoula; foster-children: Paul A. Gruel (Brenda) of Helena and Carol Anderson of Billings, foster son/brother-in-law, Joseph W. Pearson (Karen) of Billings; grandchildren, Ronda K. Gruel-Hott of Aurora, Colo., Jeffrey A. Gruel of Billings, Kristin Gruel of Seattle, Wash., Albert and Scott Dorsett of Missoula, Charles Gruel of Fort Jackson, S.C., Devon Gruel of Helena; and great-granddaughter Riley Ann Hott; brother, Robert W. Gruel (Elsie) of Great Falls; sisters, Joyce Graft (Gene) and Laurel Dean Holman (Orville) of Great Falls; other nephews; brothers-in-law, Elmer K. Haney of Billings and Walter C. Haney of California; and a special family friend, Joseph M. Terribilini.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel with interment in Mountview cemetery. Memorials to charity of one's choice.

John 'Jack' Christopher Williams
GREYBULL, Wyo. - John (Jack) Christopher Williams, age 82, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 1998, at the Washakie Memorial Hospital in Worland, Wyo.
Jack was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on Dec. 27, 1915, to Roy D. and Sophia (Schiebel) Williams. Jack received his schooling in Rapid City, S.D. Jack married Julia Kathryn O'Connor on July 10, 1939, in Rapid City.
Jack started for J. C Penney's in 1934, right out of high school. He worked for the J. C. Penney's stores in Lead, S.D. Missoula, Mont., and later moved to Greybull in 1949, where he worked for J. C. Penney's. Jack then owned and operated Williams Four Seasons in Greybull.
Jack loved his grandchildren. His special "recreation" was his family, grandchildren, picnics and family gatherings. Jack also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Jack was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greybull, the Knights of Columbus in Greybull, the Greybull Chamber of Commerce, the BPOE #1431 Elks Lodge in Greybull, and the Lion's Club.
Jack is survived by his wife, Julia Williams of Greybull; one son, John M. Williams of Greybull; four daughters, Sister Joan Williams of Cheyenne, Wyo., Jean Fitzsimmons of Marysville, Wash., Judy Rowan of Lander, Wyo., and Janet Mogan of Laurel, Mont.; 14 Grandchildren; three Great-grandchildren; one brother, Jim Williams of Southern California.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.
The Rosary Vigil will be held on Thursday, June 11, at the Greybull Funeral Home at 7 p.m., and the Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 11, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greybull at 10 a.m. Reverend Peter Johnson will be the celebrant. Burial will follow at Hillside cemetery in Greybull.
Visitation will be on Thursday, June 11, at the Greybull Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A Memorial Fund has been set up at Big Horn Federal Savings & Loan in Greybull, with the proceeds to go to the Knights of Columbus.

Maxene K. Bell
Maxene K. Bell, 58, of Billings, passed away Saturday morning, June 6, 1998, at Deaconess Medical Center, of natural causes. She was born in Jamestown, N.D., on June 30, 1939.
Survivors include her three children, Dan Bell of Corvallis, Ore., Shawna Steele of Edmonds, Wash., and Charlene White of England.
Cremation has taken place and private services are planned. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Royal Vernon Granning
PLENTYWOOD - Memorial services for Royal Vernon Granning will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 9. Pastor David C. Curtright will officiate in the Plentywood Lutheran Church. Cremation has taken place and private interment will follow. Royal died Friday, June 3, 1998 at the Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood.
Royal was born May 5, 1926, at Duluth, Minn., to Einar and Jennie (Gidland) Granning. After his mother's death, he moved to Reserve to live with his Aunt Karen and Uncle Adjof Totdahl. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church, and attended Rock Spring School through the eighth grade. In September 1944, he entered the Army and served in the Philippines and Japan.
He married Phyllis Smith on April 6, 1947. He served on the Church Council, Plentywood School Board, Sheridan County Draft Board, various elevator boards and AIA Insurance Board. He was also a member of the Montana Grain Growers Association, Masonic Lodge and Al Badoo Shrine Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Plentywood; son, Jerry Granning of Laurel; daughters, Sharon and Jorgen Jensen of Plentywood, Louise and Jim Nissen of Harlem. Royal greatly enjoyed watching his grandchildren in sporting events and special activities. Grandchildren are Ty and Christi Granning of Saco, Todd McCabe of Redstone, Misty McCabe of Bozeman, Brandon, Jordon and Morgan Nissen of Harlem, Brooke and Beau Hensel of Belgrade. Stepgrandchildren include Darren and Tracy Jensen, Lisa Nelson and Billie Jo and Alanna Granning. He rejoiced in the birth of his great-granddaughter Karsen Granning. He is also survived by his brother, Clyde and Vivian Granning, of Flaxville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda; and his parents.
Royal loved to travel, dance, play cards, hunt and visit. He also enjoyed playing and watching sporting activities. He played baseball, bowled and golfed and participated in many community events. His farm, family and faith were tie center of his life.

Ivy Faith Kebble
July 29, 1997 - June 4, 1998
RED LODGE - Ivy Faith Kebble, 10 month old daughter of John and Heidi Kebble, passed away peacefully while sleeping Thursday morning, June 4, 1998. She leaves behind her devoted family who will miss her easy laughter and sparkling blue eyes that always seemed to be smiling.
"Little Ives" is survived by her parents, John and Heidi Kebble; sisters Chloe, 7; Madison, 5; and Greta, 2; grandparents Melanie Kebble of Minneapolis, Clyde and Margie Goldberg of Billings and Kemp and Linda Wilson of Red Lodge; great-grandparents Frances Gerard of Billings and Wesley Gauger of Billings; plus many aunts and uncles and 15 cousins, all who loved her dearly. Ivy was welcomed into heaven by her protective cousin, Luke Kebble.
John and Heidi know that they will be able to hold and finish raising Ivy in Heaven. As Scripture declares: "Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord." (Romans 14:8). "So your child is not lost. And in the ages to come, your Gracious God will show you that child."
Funeral Mass of the Angels will be celebrated at St. Agnes Catholic Church on Monday, June 6, at 1 p.m. Memorials may be sent to the "Ivy Kebble Children's Book Fund" at the Red Lodge Carnegie Library, P.O. Box 1068, Red Lodge, Mont. 59068. Please pray for us.

Donna Jo Nunn
LAUREL - Donna Jo Nunn, 67, of Laurel was born Oct. 2, 1930, and she passed on to a better world Friday, June 5, 1998, at Billings Deaconess Hospital. Her pain and suffering is now over.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Donna is survived by her children, Donna Jean (Rick) Conlon of Billings, Terry (Cleone) Eastlick of Laurel, Shannon (Fred) Ott of Billings, Vern (Lisa) Kennedy of Billings, and three stepdaughters, Tammy Nunn of Park City, Brenda Damm of Park City, and Lori Jones of Blaine, Minn.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Myrna (Dean) Evans of Odessa, Texas, Karen (Roy) Bergley of Bismarck, N.D., and Marlene (Don) Papka of Laurel; and one brother, Gene Bradley of Billings.
She will be missed by all who have known and loved her. Rev. Willoughby will officiate at graveside interment 11 a.m. Thursday, June 11, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Cremation has taken place and arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Paul M. Plymale
TOWNSEND - Paul M. Plymail, 86, passed away on Friday, June 5, 1998, at Broadwater Health Center of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 8, at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Deep Creek cemetery. Connors Funeral Home is in charge.

Erma A. Scott
POWELL, Wyo. - Erma A. Scott, 84, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at the Powell Nursing Home.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the Ballard Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 6, at the Riverside cemetery in Cody.

Ruby Rykowski Tennant
Ruby Rykowski Tennant, 74, passed away at her home after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, June 5, 1998. She was born July 29, 1923, in Minnesota.
Her early years were spent in Sidney, where she met Joseph Rykowski. They were married in 1938 in North Dakota. Together, they raised 11 children on a dryland farm outside of Belfield. After his death in 1966, she moved to Glendive, where she met Jack Tennant and in 1975, they moved to Billings.
She was a fine homemaker and loved her yard, garden and flowerbeds.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Tennant; four brothers, Cliff Berg (Darlene) of Sidney, Walt Berg of Sidney, Lloyd Berg of Minnesota, and Art Berg of Wisconsin; two sisters-in-law, Mary Wohl of Missoula, and Josephine Rehm of Dillon; one brother-in-law, Tom Rykowski of California; six sons, Ray Rykowski (Lorraine) of Dickinson, Ken Rykowski (Connie) of Colorado, Ron Rykowski (Linda) of Billings, Dave Rykowski of Laurel, Edward Rykowski (Cindi) of Billings, and Doug Rykowski (Donna) of Billings; five daughters, Marlene Stanley of Dickinson, Janice Schwindt (Ervin) of Texas, Helen Flaaen of Dickinson, LaVerne Witte of South Dakota, and Sandra Tuhy (Dave) of Dickinson; 35 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two stepdaughters, Connie Emery, who lovingly cared for her during her last days, and Randeen Cummings; and two very special friends, Georgia Kembel and Will Johnson. We love you and will miss you until we meet again.
Vigil service will be held 7 p.m. Monday and Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Little Flower Catholic Church. Cremation will follow. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 1049, Billings, Mont. 59103. Cremation or Funeral Gallery of Billings is in charge of arrangements.

Martha "Mardee" Gaskill
BROADUS - Martha "Mardee" Gaskill, 82, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at the Powder River Nursing Home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City with interment in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.

James A. 'Jim' Ross
CULBERTSON - James A. "Jim" Ross, 57, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at his home east of Culbertson.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the Everson-Clayton Chapel in Culbertson. Cremation will follow and inurnment will be on the family farm.

Mabel A. Woods
Mabel A. Woods, 83, of Billings, passed away Friday morning, June 5, 1998, at Valley Health Care Center. The daughter of Edward and Theodocia Kemp Swift, she was born in Aurora, Ind., Aug. 20, 1914.
Mabel was raised and educated in Aurora and following graduation from high school, managed the Palace Theatre in Aurora. In 1953, she went to work for the Cincinnati Bus Lines as supervisor of the charter division. She moved to Billings in 1959, where she began working for the Builder's Exchange of Billings. She retired as executive secretary in 1989, following 25 years of dedicated service.
Mabel enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, watching sports, especially baseball, on television, and music. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Billie Marron and her husband, Jack of Billings; her sister, Mary Hubbell of Phoenix, Ariz.; her two grandchildren, Bret Slagle of Billings and Laura (Mike) Everett of Helena; and her great-grandchildren, Kelly, Jennifer, Brandon, and Ashley. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, John and Edward Swift.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Cremation has taken place and private interment will be in Mountview cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Al-Bedoo Shrine Children's Transportation Trust Fund, P.O. Box 20673, Billings, MT 59104, or the Osteoporosis Foundation Research Fund, P.O. Box 3566, Billings, MT 59103-3566. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Hazel B. Gum
Hazel B. Gum, 76, died Wednesday night, June 3, 1998, at The Vista, 3840 Rimrock Road, in Billings.
A private committal ceremony will be held on Monday, June 8, at Little Big Horn National cemetery with Dahl Funeral Chapel handling the arrangements.
Hazel was born June 14, 1921, in Campbell, Neb., the daughter of Chris and Christina Boysen.
After graduating from high school she moved to California and married Carl Rechsteiner in 1941. In 1955, she married Richard H. Gum and in 1963 they moved to Billings, where Richard preceded her in death.
Hazel attended MSU-Billings and received her degree in rehab counseling. She worked at Galen State Hospital until her retirement in 1990. She then moved to Billings and lived here until her death.
Survivors include four children: Martin Rechsteiner of Denmark, Michael Rechsteiner, Hollister, Calif., Sandra Stepper, Billings, and Kristina Vanica, Glendale, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family requests no flowers. Any memorials should be sent to The Vista at Mission Ridge, 3840 Rimrock Road, Billings, 59102, or Geriatric Services c/o St. Vincent Foundation, P.O. Box 35200, Billings, 59107-5200.
