Adopted son of Edith Manley - Rosebud Creek near Busby; Father of Jeremiah Littlesun, 18, Shacazie Redwoman, 15, Delray Lamewoman, 11; Brother of Hilda Moss, Glenn Manley, Dale Brady Sr., John Yellowbear, Trudy Small, David Howard Powell, Jennifer Brady, Ross Brady, Henry Brady Jr., Henley Brady, Eldon Brady and Henrietta Brady; fiancÈ of Candace Polk and adopted daughter, Nicole Vranas; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
preceded in death by mother, Gloria Kills On Top-Yellowbear; adopted father, Pius Manley; and baby daughter, Jamesetta Redwoman.

James grew up in the Rosebud Creek area of Busby and attended Busby schools. He later took vocational classes to learn various trades. He was a skilled horseman, carpenter and artist. He enjoyed helping others, and was fluent in his native language, Northern Cheyenne.

His hobbies were fishing, camping, hiking and mountain climbing. His favorite fishing and camping area was the Cache La Poudre Canyon outside Fort Collins, Colo. He had a great love for the outdoors and his greatest love was for his home in the Rosebud Creek area of Montana.

James F. Spelman
RED LODGE - James F. "Jim" Spelman died peacefully on July 29, 1998, in Red Lodge, after living 81 active years. He was born on Feb. 14, 1917, the third of four children to Mayme Brennan and John Spelman in Anaconda.
Jim attended the University of Montana on a football scholarship and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. After graduation he went to work for Balfor Jewelry Co.

In 1941, John and Mary Ruth Ryan were united in marriage in Billings. Also in 1941 he enlisted in the Army and attained the rank of Captain before his discharge. Mary and Jim moved to Butte after WWII with their two children, Lynne and James Jr., where Jim began his career with Carpenter Paper Co. He was transferred to Billings in 1948 and became District Manager of Carpenter Paper. Their third child, Michael, was born in Billings.

Jim changed careers in 1961 when he became vice-president and director of business development at the First National Bank. His presence was always felt in the Billings community through his many civic endeavors. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Billings Exchange Club. Instrumental in the Head Start Program and the Blue Blazers of the Billings Chamber, Jim, at one time, was honored as one of the 14 outstanding civic leaders of America.

His commitment to his religion was apparent to all. After he retired to Red Lodge, he became a vital member of St. Agnes Parish. The parishioners enjoyed his Irish tenor.

Jim's passion for ski racing took him to several ski resorts around the country. This passion, combined with his competitive and tenacious Irish spirit, helped him win numerous medals competing in the Masters Program.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ryan Spelman; daughter, Lynne Shaurette; son, Michael and wife, Vicki; grandchildren, Lisa Fallon and husband, Philip, Trevor Spelman and wife, Pam; great-grandchildren, Megan Spelman and Kaitlyn, Connor, and Thomas Fallon. Jim was preceded in death by his son, James Jr., and son-in-law, Dale Shaurette.

A vigil service will be held 7 p.m. Friday. Funeral mass at 11 a.m. Saturday. Both services will be at St. Agnes Church in Red Lodge. Private family interment Sunset Memorial Gardens. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be directed to: St. Agnes Church Building Fund, 11th St. Ward, Red Lodge, 59068, or Eagle Mount Ski Program, 2822 Third Ave. N., Billings, 59101. "We will miss you on the slopes, Gramp."

Anne S. Norman
BIG TIMBER - Anne S. Norman, 93, died at Pioneer Medical Center Wednesday, July 29.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at Lowry Funeral Home with burial in Mountain View cemetery.

Bertha Pierce
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Bertha Pierce, 88, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Sheridan Manor.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Champion Funeral Home in Sheridan with interment in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Leslie Arthur Rubidge
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Leslie Arthur Rubidge, 71, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at his home in Sheridan.
Cremation has taken place. Services and interment will be at a later date in London, England. Kane Funeral Home of Sheridan was in charge.

Margaret Laverna Brown
HELENA - Margaret Laverna Brown was born July 23, 1921, at Rhame, N.D., and died July 29, 1998, at Big Sky Care Center in Helena.
Margaret was the youngest of three daughters born to the union of Maggie and H.C. "Bert" Hale. The eldest, Juanita Overland, is deceased and Winona Bowman resides in Dickinson, N.D., with her daughter.

Margaret graduated from high school in Rhame and met her surviving husband, Fred R. Brown, while attending college in Billings. They were married in 1940 and took residence at Phillipsburg, where Fred coached and taught in the high school for two years. Their first child, Terry F. Brown, was born on Dec. 3, 1940 at Anaconda. Fred next took a coaching position at Bowman, N.D., where their second child, Bonnie J. Anderson, was born on Nov. 11, 1942. The family then moved to Miles City in 1943 where Fred finished his coaching career at Custer County High School in 1946. Their youngest son, Theodore, now deceased, was born Jan. 21, 1953, in Miles City. They left Miles City in 1959 for residence in Billings and later moved to Helena in 1986.

Surviving family members are: Fred R. Brown, husband, Helena; Terry F. Brown, son, Townsend; Bonnie J. Anderson, daughter, Houston, Texas; three grandsons, two granddaughters, one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter.

Retz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, Retz Funeral Home. The family has requested that memorials be sent to Westmont Hospice.

Lydia Lich
Lydia Lich, 85, of Billings died July 29, 1998, at Billings Deaconess Hospital. She was born Nov. 13, 1912, in Scottsbluff, Neb., a daughter of Peter and Mary Smith. As a youngster, she lived in Colorado, Wyoming, and later moved to Montana. She married Ed Lich in Billings in 1933. They farmed in the Billings and Custer areas until 1967 when they moved back to Billings.
Surviving Lydia are her husband, Ed; two sons, Harvey Lich and Mel (Karen) Lich; one daughter, Willa (Leonard) McSweyn; two sisters; one brother; and many grandchildren and great-grand-children. She was preceded in death by one son, Lyle.

"God saw her getting tired and a cure was not to be; so He put His arms around her and whispered "Come with Me." With tearful eyes we watched her suffer and saw her fade away. Although we loved her dearly we could not make her stay; a golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best!"

At Lydia's request, there will be no memorial service. Cremation has taken place at Cremation or Funeral Gallery. Private family interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ZooMontana.

Ken Berndt
RED LODGE - Ken Berndt, 48, of Red Lodge, died of cancer on Thursday morning, July 30, 1998, in Beartooth Hospital & Health Center.
Ken was born on April 30, 1950, in Billings, a son of Walter and Irline Berndt. He was raised and educated in Billings, and worked as a self-employed flooring contractor for several years. Ken had resided in Red Lodge for the past 10 years.

He enjoyed playing softball and was active in the local pool league. Vacationing in Mexico - particularly walking the beaches there - was something that Ken greatly enjoyed.

In 1968, Ken was married to Mara Pekovich, and they had two children, Tanya and Ely.

Survivors include his two children and their spouses: Tanya and Chris Joseph of Ballantine, and Ely and Lista Berndt of Red Lodge; his parents, Walter and Irline Berndt of Billings; one sister, Brenda Berndt of Billings; and two grandsons, Joel Camarillo and Rain Berndt.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Olcott Funeral Chapel. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be given to the Boys & Girls Club of Red Lodge, Box 11, Red Lodge, MT 59068 or to the charity of one's choice.

Helen Walter Fritzler
LAUREL - Helena Walter Fritzler, 86, of Laurel, passed away Thursday, July 30, 1998, after a long illness at her residence in Laurel. She was a daughter of George and Katherine Walter, born Feb. 19, 1912, at Walla Walla, Wash.
She married Alex Fritzler Jr. on Aug. 27, 1932, in Laurel. They were lifelong residents of Laurel. Helen was a waitress in Laurel and Billings. She was a charter member of Grace Bible Church in Laurel and was very active.

Survivors include her husband, Alex of Laurel; two sons, Gerald and his wife, Laurie of Littleton, Colo., and Dick and his wife, Shirley of Fountain Valley, Calif.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Esther Weschenfelder of Laurel.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel. Interment will be held in the Laurel cemetery. Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel was in charge of arrangements.

Clifford M. Dame
TERRY - Clifford M. Dame, 80, formerly of Baker, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at the Holy Rosary Care Center in Miles City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, at Stevenson Funeral Home with interment in the Bonnievale cemetery, both in Baker.

George Eldon Black
"A friend to every one, a stranger to no one."
BELFRY - At the age of 68, George Eldon Black died at his home of cancer on July 29, 1998. George was born in Red Lodge, on Aug. 21, 1929, and was the son of Esther and George Allen Black.

George worked as a mechanic and truck driver throughout his life. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he was road boss for the Carbon County, Bridger Shop. He served in the Army during WWII. In April of 1955 he married Delores Bethurem. Five children were born of this marriage: Lucinda (Cindy), Russell, Carl, DeGe and Penny. On March 26, 1976, George married Thelma Harper and inherited a stepson, Bob Harper.

George enjoyed fishing, black powder and socializing with his friends.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Thelma; six children, Cindy (Dennis) Osborne, Washington, Russell Black, Billings, Carl (Jane) Black, Gillette, DeGe (Bob) Jackson, Casper, Penny (Jon) Mooney, Houston, and Bob (Crystal) Harper, Colorado; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. George is also survived by two brothers, Earl (Louise) Black and Jack (Beth) Wipplinger, both of Belfry; and two sisters, Erma Hazzard, Coos Bay, Ore., and Vera (Bruno) Ahola, Red Lodge.

A Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. Private family interment. Cremation has taken place.

Donald L. Doerr
CLEARFIELD, Utah - On July 19, 1998, Donald L. Doerr passed away due to a fatal brain disease. He was born Feb. 27, 1930, to Mollie and Alfred J. Doerr in Lovell, Wyo.
Don served with the Wyo. Natl. Guard in the Korean War. He graduated from the U. of Wyoming with a degree in mechanical engineering. At the time of his death, he was president and owner of Doerr Management Enterprises, Inc. Don married Dorothy Dove in Lovell. They were divorced. He later married Charline McMullin.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Diane Bosgieter and Dorothy Ann Baird, both of Ogden; seven grandchildren; a sister, Helen Regnier of Lovell; two brothers, Dr. Eugene Doerr of Basin, Wyo., and Roland Doerr of Cody, Wyo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Debbie Oliver; and a granddaughter, Camie Oliver. Funeral Services were held Thurs., July 23, at 11 a.m. in Ogden. Military honors were accorded at the graveside.

Marion 'June' Gilbert
ROUNDUP - Marion "June" Gilbert, 68, died Sunday, July 26, at Roundup Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
A viewing will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Wier Funeral Chapel. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Roundup City cemetery.

Jordan P. Hanson
HAVRE - Jordan P. Hanson, 15, died July 28, 1998, at Benefis East Hospital in Great Falls due to injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church in Havre with the Rev. William Olsen officiating. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rockvale cemetery, south of Laurel. Memorials in Jordan's honor may be made to the Jordan Hanson Memorial Fund, 1500 Shannon Road, Laurel, Mont. 59044.
Jordan was born April 24, 1983, in Havre to Paul and Lorrie Hanson. He attended schools in Havre through the seventh grade when the family moved to Laurel. He worked for his parents and for various ranches in the area. Jordan liked to hay, he was running a swather and driving tractors from the time he was 7 years old. Jordan loved to work; this showed by his callused hands. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, rodeo, roping, bowling, playing poker, actions, welding, country music, his chew and coffee. He had a real love for mechanics and liked to work on his pickup truck. Jordan always had a wisecrack or joke that would make you laugh.
Jordan was a member of 4-H, Future Farmers of America, Montana Team Roping Assoc., High School Rodeo Assoc., VICA and the Messiah Lutheran Church.
Jordan was the best big brother to Collin and little brother to Hailey and Kadie. The memories he has made with his many friends throughout Havre and Laurel won't be forgotten.
Jordan is survived by his parents; one brother, Collin Hanson of Laurel; two sisters, Kadie Hanson of Laurel and Hailey (Tony) Belcourt of Box Elder; maternal grandparents, Lester and Arlene Ophus of Havre; paternal grandparents, Gary and Joellyn Hanson of Vancouver, Wash., and Norm and Paula Harju of Havre; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Emil Sekora
JOLIET - Emil Sekora, 86, longtime Joliet area rancher, died Monday, July 27, 1998, in Cedar Wood Villa in Red Lodge.
Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Marie Kilwien of Daingerfield, Texas, and Barbara Jean Stuver of Lewistown; six grandchildren, Sherri (Mario) Hernandez, Richard (Karen) Kilwien, John Kilwien, Michael (Katrina) Stuver, Jule (Lisa) Stuver, and Dawn Stuver; and three great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith in 1988; granddaughter, Deanne Stuver; and five brothers and two sisters.
Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in Olcott Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Agnes Catholic Church in Red Lodge. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Billings.

Thomas Edwards Toth
Thomas Edwards Toth, infant son of Cheri Toth, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at St. Vincent Hospital.
Thomas is survived by his mother.
Cremation has taken place. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist had charge of cremation.

Bernice Adeline Reed
WORLAND, Wyo. - Bernice Adeline Peterson Reed, 81, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at her home in Worland after a long illness.
Memorial Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Grace Chapel Community Church with private family burial in the Lander cemetery. Bryant Funeral Home of Worland is in charge.

Doris LaRose Mullinax
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Doris LaRose Mullinax, 80, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at the Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at Kane Funeral Home in Sheridan. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, at Holy Name Catholic Church.

Richard A. Traphagan
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Richard A. Traphagan, 47, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, on the Big Horn Mountains as a result of an accident while riding an ATV.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 31, at the Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Ferries Funeral Home of Sheridan is in charge.

Charlotte Eleanore Baker
BASIN, Wyo. - Charlotte Eleanore Baker, 79, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at the Bonnie Bluejacket Nursing Home.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Greybull. Atwood Family Funeral Directors, Inc. are in charge.

Verna Bull-Bull Calf
BROWNING - Verna Grey Bull-Bull Calf, 54, of Browning, formerly of Poplar, died Thursday, July 23, 1998, in Fall River Mills, Calif.
Wake services will be Friday, July 31, at the Poplar Cultural Center with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Center with interment in St. Ann's cemetery. Clayton Memorial Chapel of Wolf Point is in charge.

Walter B. 'Junior' Dean III
FORSYTH - Walter B. "Junior" Dean III, 89, of Forsyth, died Friday, July 10, 1998, at the Rosebud Health Care Center in Forsyth of natural causes.
Junior was born March 25, 1909, in Forsyth, the son of Walter B. and Grace Marcyes Dean. His mother, Grace, was the first white child born in Forsyth in 1882. He attended elementary and high school in Forsyth, graduating from Forsyth High School in 1926. Junior began college during the depression and as a talented musician, he played everything from country dances to formal balls to pay his way through college. At the University of Montana, he studied business, graduating in 1931. Junior then attended law school, graduating at the top of his class in 1934.

Following law school, Junior traveled for two years in Europe, spending some time in Germany during Hitler's dominance. He had many adventures throughout Europe, visiting Mussolini's Italy as well as north Africa. Several of Junior's adventure's activities during this time were climbing the pyramids and climbing Mount Vesuvius.

On Oct. 26, 1940, Junior married Esther Nelstead in Miles City. He later served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a Lt. Commander. His duties included serving as executive officer of a training squadron. He returned to Forsyth where he made his home and raised his family and was active in many business ventures, including the Howdy Hotel, and with his partner John "Butch" Snedker for 25 years.

During the years his children were growing up, Junior built and maintained a lighted basketball court in his backyard so any child could practice day or night. He also enjoyed playing the saxophone and clarinet with his wife Esther accompanying him on the piano. They would play for many different occasions as well as organizations in Forsyth. They never missed the Holiday meals at the Howdy Hotel.

He is survived by his wife, Esther of Forsyth; two daughters, Marcyes (Leo) Schmaus of Dayton, Wyo., and their children Leo D., Marta Ostler, Jason and Gretchen; Jan (Max) Bauer of Forsyth, and their children Tori, Mathew, Sally and Beth; four sons, Walter (Lillian) Dean of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and their children, Sarah and Katy; Rudolph (Bonnie) Dean of Fort Wayne, Ind., and their children, Jed, Rachel and Johanna; Gordon Dean of Bloomington, Minn., and son, Owen; Peter (Alta) Dean of Huntley, and their children, Colin and Cameron; as well as his two great-grandchildren, Adaline and Elana Ostler.

Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 1998, at the Beals Mortuary Chapel in Forsyth. Cremation has taken place and interment will take place at a later time in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the Forsyth Veterans Center following the services. Memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 222, Forsyth, MT 59327. Beals Mortuary of Forsyth is in charge of the arrangements.
