Frieda Riedinger Friedrich

Pastor Kent Stenzel will officiate at the service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Plentywood; interment will be in Trinity cemetery, northeast of Plentywood. Mrs. Friedrich died at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood Wednesday afternoon; she would have been 108 next Friday.
Frieda Riedinger Friedrich was born July 31, 1890, at North Saint Paul, Minn. She was the daughter of Otto and Anna Riedinger. Grandma grew up in the city of North Saint Paul and worked at a children's orphanage and also for a school doctor. She loved to tell stories and talked often about her trip on the steamer, the U.S. Cleveland, in 1910 to meet her Riedinger relatives in Germany. She was so impressed with how educated every one was there, that when she came home she completed high school even though she had already attended business college. She was very proud of completing her education.

In 1917, while visiting her good friend, Martha Friedrich, who was homesteading in Montana, Grandma became reacquainted with Edwin. Before leaving for home he asked her to marry him. Grandma waited until she was back in Minnesota before accepting his proposal. She took up a homestead northeast of Antelope adjoining Edwin's land and they were married on Dec. 6, 1917.

She loved the "Big Sky" country. She would laugh about how she didn't know how to cook when she first got married . She learned to make plum soup, cottage cheese and flapjacks, but never learned how to milk a cow or drive a car (although she did get behind the wheel several times with exciting results). She loved her life on the farm and looked at life as an adventure.

After her husband's death in 1932, Grandma continued to maintain the family farm. In 1946, her widowed friend, Rhoda Hedges, came to live with her until "Aunty" Hedges died in 1970 at the age of 102. In 1947, when her son Robert was married , Grandma moved to Plentywood.

Grandma was very active at Trinity Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for all the years she was in Montana. In 1990, she was given the "Miles Christi" award by Concordia Theological Seminary. This annual award is given to those who have quietly gone about the work of the Lord in their lives, showing the love of their Savior Jesus Christ.

Grandma's love touched everyone who knew her. Her love of life and of God were apparent to all. Grandma died on July 22, 1998, at the age of 107 at the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood. She is survived by her children, Martha Johnson of Bellevue, Neb., Robert and Don of Antelope, and Harold of Plentywood. She had 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Edwin; son, Carl; grandson, Larry; sister, Louise; and brothers, Otto and Bill.

Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood has charge of arrangements.

John E. Tenge
"I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer it nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again."
Jack Tenge, who epitomizes this quote by Steven Grellet, died peacefully Thursday, July 23, 1998, in Billings. Born in North Washington, Iowa, to Mary and Albert Tenge on March 4, 1909, he graduated from Saint Mary's High School and from Mankato Commercial College in Mankato, Minn.

He took a job at a Minnesota hotel where he met his first wife, Marie, with whom he shared 47 treasured years.

In response to an advertisement seeking a woman to do bookkeeping, he became the very first bookkeeper of First Bank Stock Corp. of Minneapolis, the precursor of First Bank System. He later recounted that the accounting department he inherited was housed in a cardboard Post Toasties container. From that humble beginning in 1930, he rose to Examiner and then moved as Assistant Vice President to the First National Bank and Trust Company of Helena in 1934.

He fell in love with the state and began a long career of service here. In 1946, he moved to the Midland National Bank in Billings where he was named President and Managing Officer in 1952. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 1974. He was a leader in banking circles; serving as president of the Montana Bankers Association and of the American Bankers Association over the years.

Jack's presence was felt in his community, business and church leadership roles. He was an ardent supporter of the Billings community, the Catholic Church and numerous civic organizations. He served as a Director on many boards including the Atlantic Richfield Corporation, Montana Power Company, Montana Flour Mills, and the Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in the formation of BACET, a funding program for Catholic education in Billings.

As a family man, Jack and Marie shared their life with three daughters: Mary Rose, Gretchen and Jean. He was preceded in death by Marie in 1985.

In 1988, he married Virginia M. Hynes. Over the next 10 years, their combined families have grown to include seven children, 24 grandchildren and 26 great-great-grandchildren. He shared many celebrations and tribulations with their offspring, all of whom treasure his love and advice. Grandchildren from both families were a great source of pride and joy to him.

Jack had many interests. He loved the Boulder River Country above Big Timber and spent many happy hours in pursuit of the elusive trout at family cabin. He knew the exhilaration of an early morning duck hunt shared with good friends and family.

He enjoyed many enduring friendships throughout his life. Jack had a way of making everyone feel like his best friend. He had a kind way with people and their needs. He treated everyone as an equal and many people are grateful for his help and understanding. He led by the example of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; three daughters: Mary Rose and Mike Costello of Royalton, Minn., Gretchen Rooney of Helena and Jean and Tom Jacques of Billings; stepchildren: Dennis Hynes of Boulder, Colo., Judith Burns and Stuart of Sheridan, Mont., Tim Hynes of Denver, Colo., and Brian Hynes of Minneapolis.

Other survivors include brothers, Ed, Francis and Reynold Tenge of North Washington, Iowa, and sister, Rita Baumgartner of Porte City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie; brothers, Joe and Norb; stepbrother, Albin; and grandson, Mick Costello.

All men do not die - only those who so live as to leave no imprint on their fellow men. Jack leaves a heritage greater than wealth. His family inherits from him something more priceless than gold, for his name is synonymous with honor and integrity.

His spirit survives in his grandchildren who strive to emulate his high ideals and to continue the legacy of his stories, his warmth and his dedication to leaving this world a better place for having passed through it.

Vigil services will be 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral. The Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, Alderson Chapel has charge of arrangements.

H. Leonard 'Corkey' Farwell
EVARO - H. Leonard "Corkey" Farwell was born in Pryor 64 years ago and died in Great Falls on Monday, June 29.
His parents were Jessie Hiber Farwell and A. Leonard Farwell. He was raised in the Pryor and Billings area, lived for several years in Seattle, and returned to Montana a few years ago to live just outside of Missoula at Evaro.

Cork loved life, his many friends and his family. He was very proud of his Indian heritage, always wanting to learn more about Montana. He joined the Navy at 17 to "see the world" and I am sure that Japan still remembers him! He followed in his Dad's footsteps and became an excellent carpenter, using his skills in Billings, Seattle and Alaska.

Cork had a way with people, especially children. Giving people nicknames was a favorite pastime of his. Those of us "honored" by his nicknames knew that we were very special to him. Pride in his children and grandchildren was very apparent to all he came in contact with.

He died while doing something he loved immensely, driving a wagon in a wagon train. A wagon train accident claimed his life. He loved the West.

His wife, Jo, lives in Evaro; daughters, Tanya and Siernna live in Seattle, Nadine lives in Billings; and his son, Leonard is in California. He has five grandsons and two granddaughters. He is also survived by his sister, Nedra, brother-in-law, C.B., and their children and families.

Whenever you hear a good Western tune, have a desire to dance or read a good Louie L' Amour book, think of Cork and smile because he is smiling at you. .

Save a dance for me. . . .

I love you,

Sis

Corkey will be buried in the Pryor cemetery on Monday, July 6, at 2 p.m. Feel free to come and join us there.
