Edna Mackley
Edna Mackley, 93, died July 3, 1998, at Eunice's Retirement Home in Billings. Edna was born in Oklahoma Territory on Dec.22, 1904, daughter of Luella St. Clair Hawbaker and Harvey Hawbaker. She graduated from Westby High School.
She earned her Elementary Teacher's Certificate at Dillon Normal School. She taught for 14 years at Westby, Outlook, and Sanders, all in Montana. She was married to Harry A. Mackley on May 31, 1936, at Peerless, and moved to the family farm in Sanders. She was a member of the Eastern Star, and very active in the Democratic Party, serving as Secretary for many years. She was also very active in the Farmer's Union, and the Home Demonstration Club.
Since their retirement in 1960, she had many delightful trips with her cousin Dorothy Bohn and Fran Ruth Carrington to Mexico, South America, New York and places unknown. Her hobbies included sewing and being a generous friend. She was a person of service to friends and community.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harry in 1971. Survivors include her cousin, Dorothy Bohn; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at the Community Presbyterian Church in Hysham at 2 p.m., July 8, with burial to follow at Hysham cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Henry E. Melcher Sr.
Henry E. Melcher Sr., 91, of Billings, formerly of Broadview, passed away Saturday, July 4, 1998, at St. Vincent Hospital, of natural causes. He was born in Hoyt, Kan., on Oct. 7, 1906, the only son of Charles and Stella Melcher.
He moved to Montana as a small boy when his father homesteaded in the Broadview area. They later bought the farm seven and a half miles east of Broadview, where Henry farmed until his retirement. He married Mary Bowman and of this union, two children were born, Margaret Walth and Henry E. Melcher II. Henry and Mary traveled to the south for about 10 years. Mary passed away April 25, 1994, ending 62 years of marriage. In addition to his daughter and son, Henry is survived by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin 11 a.m. Monday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Heights Chapel. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Heights Chapel with interment to follow in the Huntley cemetery.

James B. 'Jim' Stone
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - James B. "Jim" Stone was called to join his Maker on June 26, 1998, in Bellingham, following a short illness. With him were his widow, LaVerne, and sons John and Jim.
Jim was born in Park City, Mont. on Oct. 15, 1910, the son of Benjamin and Gertrude Stone. He was raised on the family ranch near Wheat Basin until 1922, when the family moved to Laurel for the children's continued schooling. He also attended Billings Business College.
He worked for Laurel Leaf Refinery and then went in to the grocery business for 12 years. He went to work for New York Life Insurance Company in Billings, and was an agent for 38 years, retiring in 1982. While working for NYLIC, Jim was elected to serve on the agents advisory council at the home office in New York City for two years, one year as Vice-President of the council.
Jim was a member of St. Patrick's church in Billings and the Church of the Assumption in Bellingham. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and achieved the fourth degree. He served as President of the Central High School Activities Council for 2 years. He was also a member of the Billings Elks Lodge 394.
Jim had a terrific sense of humor and enjoyed sharing it with his many friends. He also enjoyed fishing, dancing, and travel.
On April 1, 1934, Jim married Katheryn Higgins of Billings. She preceded him in death on April 26, 1980. From this union came two sons, James P. Stone of Sun Valley, Idaho and John F. Stone of Billings. On Aug. 14, 1981, he married Betty Mullowney of Billings, a long time friend of the family. They traveled extensively together until Betty's death on June 1, 1991. On November 2, 1991, Jim married Laverne Williams of Bellingham, Wash. She was also a long time family friend. Laverne survives Jim in Bellingham where they lived until Jim's death. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Lee and Milton.
Survivors include the widow; his two sons Jim and John; and his brother, Robert F. Stone of Billings. He is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grand children.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on July 11, at St. Patricks Co-Cathedral, Billings, at 10 a.m. This will be followed by a gathering of friends and family at the St. Patrick's parish hall immediately following the service. Cremation has taken place.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, 3021 6th Avenue North, Billings, Mont. 59101, or their charity of choice.

Gladys A. Wohler
CARMEL, Ind. - Gladys Wohler, age 91, completed her earthly life on June 30, 1998, at St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel. Born June 13, 1907, in Keaster, Minn., daughter of Emma and Charles Yost, she was raised in Winifred and Lewistown, Mont. Following graduation from Fergus Co. High School she earned a two year Business degree.
In 1932 she married Leo E. Wohler, Sr. and moved to Billings with her family in 1944. She was widowed on June 23, 1950.
Gladys represented her State as "The Montana Mother of the Year" in 1969. She was active in The Trinity Lutheran Church serving as the State President of L.W.M.L. from 1962-1966, and served her community through The Community Concert and the Red Cross.
Gladys will be remembered for her dedication to her church and family, her loyalty to friends, her love of God's creations, and her appreciation for life.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; and her twin sister, Grace Zimbrick. She is survived by her seven children: Roberta (Dwight) Galloway of Carmel, Ind., Leona (Charles) Barnes of Caulder, Idaho, Dorothy (Sidney) Sutherland of Caulder, Idaho, Leo (Diana) Wohler Jr. of Billings, David Wohler of Carmel, Ind., Darlene (Gary) Larson of New London, Minn., and John (Linda) Wohler of Shawnee Mission, Kan. Her brothers: Charles (Delores) Yost of Bullhead, Ariz., Gene (Cleo) Yost of Wenatchee, Wash., and Robert (Norita) Yost of Lubbock, Texas; as well as 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 537 Grand Ave. in Billings. Memorials can be made to Carmel Lutheran Church - Parish Nursing and may be left at Trinity Lutheran Church, Billings.

Betty G. Breen
Betty G. Breen, 80, went to heaven from Mission Ridge on Thursday, July 2, 1998. Betty passed away peacefully with her family at her bedside. She was a gracious, loving mother and friend.
Betty was born on March 20, 1918, in Lee's Summit, Mo., the daughter of Mary Newby Browning and E. Thornton Browning.
In 1938, she graduated from Christian College, Columbus, Mo., and was elected to Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society. She then attended the University of Missouri where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
On March 17, 1940, Betty married Thomas B. Breen in Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Breen died on Feb. 19, 1997.
Mrs. Breen was a charter member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and of St. Rose of Lima Circle.
Survivors are a son, Thomas B. Breen Jr., and his wife, Sheila; and a son, William N. Breen and Linda S. Breen; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth, and her husband, Richard T. Lodge; six grandchildren, Scott T. Breen, John W. Breen, Holly A. Breen, Douglas M. Cox II, Robert A. Cox and Jennifer E. Cox.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a son, John T. Breen.
A vigil service will be held 5 p.m. Sunday, July 5, at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, July 6, at St. Thomas Catholic Church with Rite of Committal in Holy Cross cemetery. A luncheon at St. Thomas Church will follow committal. Memorials may be directed to Big Sky Hospice, 1041 N. 29th, Billings 59101.

Laura E. Ward Brown
APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. - Graveside services for former Billings resident, Laura E. Ward Brown, 75, who passed away Jan. 24, 1998, in Phoenix, Ariz., will be held 3 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Billings. Cremation was held in Mesa, Ariz.

George 'Mike' Dotson
SIDNEY - George "Mike" Dotson, 96, of Sidney, died Friday, July 3, 1998, in the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 6, in the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel in Sidney. Interment will follow in the Sidney cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 4; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 5, and one hour before service at the funeral home.

George D. Downing
SCOBEY - George D. Downing, 75, died Wednesday at the Daniels Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 6, at the United Methodist Church with burial in the Scobey cemetery. Waller Funeral Home is in charge.

Derrick James Ball
HAYS - Derrick James Ball, 7 months, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at Benefis East Hospital in Great Falls from a lung problem.
Wake/Rosary will be 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's Mission in Hays. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Mission with burial in the Mission cemetery. Adams Funeral Home of Malta is in charge of arrangements.
Derrick was born Nov. 18, 1997, at Havre, the son of Robert Glen Ball and Marie Longknife. He was born with lung problems and lived with his parents in Hays.
He is survived by his parents, sister, Tisha Ball of Hays; maternal grandparents, Roger and Catherine Longknife of Hays; paternal grandparents, Robert and Barbara Ball Jr. of Fort Belknap, Carol and Buzz Doney of Hays; great-grandfather, Glen Messerly; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ester Hibler
STORY, Wyo. - Ester Hibler, 75, of Story, passed away Thursday, July 2, 1998, at the Memorial Hospital in Sheridan, Wyo.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo, Wyo. Visitation will be from 1 to 10 p.m. Monday and from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo.

Edward LaFayette Hulford
MILES CITY - Edward LaFayette Hulford, 83, of Olive, Mont., passed away Tuesday, June 30, 1998, in the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.
Visitation will be Monday, July 6, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, in the First Baptist Church in Broadus. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Custer County cemetery in Miles City.

Elizabeth 'Betty' Katsuki
LOVELL, Wyo. - Elizabeth "Betty" Katsuki, 86, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at New Horizons Care Center in Lovell of natural causes.
Cremation has taken place and a family memorial service is planned for a later date. Haskell Funeral Home of Lovell is in charge of arrangements.

David Allen McBride
WORLAND, Wyo. - David Allen McBride, 36, of Worland, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at his home, after a long illness.
Visitation will be 6 p.m. Monday, July 6, at St. Mary Magdelan's Catholic Church with rosary at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, at the church, with interment in the Riverview Memorial Gardens.

Rosa V. Nielsen
DAGMAR - Rosa V. Nielsen, 96, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Dagmar. Interment will be in Nathanael cemetery, Dagmar. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood is in charge of arrangements.

George Fredrick Rouse
POWELL, Wyo. - George Fredrick Rouse, 94, of Powell, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, in the Powell Hospital.
Cremation has taken place. A private memorial graveside service will be held in the city cemetery at Libby, Mont. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home of Powell is in charge of arrangements.

Audrey Schilling
SIDNEY - Audrey Schilling, 79, of Sidney, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at the Sidney Health Center.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the Fulkerson Funeral Home in Sidney, and one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, at the Pella Lutheran Church in Sidney, with interment in the Lambert cemetery.

Lydia Wagner
Lydia Wagner, age 86, of Billings died Friday, July 3, 1998, at St. Vincent Hospital and Health Center.
She was born Feb. 6, 1912, at San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Amen) Ginter. She moved with her family at an early age to Billings where she was raised.
Lydia married Philip Hardt on Jan. 14, 1931, and they farmed west of Billings. Mr. Hardt died May 28, 1952. She married David C. Wagner on Dec. 29, 1956, and they farmed until 1960, when they moved into Billings. Mr. Wagner died Jan. 22, 1997.
Lydia was involved with the Home Demonstration Club and was active in the Ladies Aid and Friendly Circle of her church and took pride in quilting as a mission of the church.
Lydia was very generous of giving of herself in many ways, such as cooking and baking for others. She enjoyed entertaining in her home. Her German cooking was enjoyed by her family and friends, Lydia took pride in showing their flower and vegetable garden to visitors.
Survivors include her son, Allen P. Hardt, of Billings; two stepsons and their wives, Paul S. and Cindy Wagner of Havre, and David E. and Shirley Wagner west of Billings; nine stepgrandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; two step great- great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Lydia was preceded in death by two sisters; five brothers and a stepgreat- grandchild, Zachary Gierke.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, at the Pilgrim Congregational Church, 409 S. 36th St. Interment will follow at Mountview cemetery. Visitation will start noon Sunday at Smith's Downtown Chapel.
