Caroline Ruth Hoffman
POWELL, Wyo. - Caroline Ruth Finney Hoffman, 77, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at the Powell Nursing Home.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home in Powell, and one hour before the services at the Hope Lutheran Church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at the church with interment in the Crown Hill cemetery.

John E. Murray
Former Butte resident, John E. Murray of Marysville, Washington, passed away Tuesday in Billings.
He was born in Livermore, California, on August 3, 1946 to William and Lydia Murray and the family later resided in Butte.

Mr. Murray worked as a structural mechanic for Boeing Aviation for many years until his recent retirement.

He was a very avid outdoorsman especially enjoying hunting and fishing.

He married the former Shirley Chambers in Billings.

He is survived by Wife: Murray of Marysville, WA; Sons and daughters in law: John and Terry Murray of Marysville, WA and Mike and Kim Murray of Atlanta, GA; Son: Matthew Murray of Marysville, WA; Daughter and her fiance: Lynn Wanner and David Rose of Lynnwood, WA; Grandchildren: Elizabeth, Andrew, Paige, Kerstyn, Alyssa, Michael and Kaelia; Sister: Lillian Murray of Butte; Brother and sister in law: Bill and Pat Murray of Great Falls.

In accordance with his requests, Mr. Murray has been cremated.

Memorial Liturgy of The Resurrection will be celebrated Friday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Anns Catholic Church in Butte. Interment of ashes will follow in Mountain View cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Charles Francis Walsh
DENVER- Charles Francis "Chas" Walsh, 49, formerly of Lewistown, Mont., died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Denver General Hospital from an accidental fall.
A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at St. Leo's Catholic Church with interment in Mount Calvary cemetery, both in Lewistown. Creel Funeral Home of Lewistown is in charge.

Wesley Adolph
ROUNDUP - Wesley Adolph, 69, of Roundup, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at the Deaconess Medical Center in Billings after a heart attack.
Cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Melvin J. Hathaway
MILES CITY - Melvin J. Hathaway, age 80, of Miles City, passed away Monday, Aug. 3, at his home in Miles City.
Mel was born on Jan. 7, 1918, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Pearl (Stortz) Hathaway. He attended school at St. Joseph's in Le Mars, Iowa, and graduated in 1935. On Nov. 30, 1940, Mel and Bertha Lucille Kurtzhals were united in marriage in Le Mars.

Mel entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and was discharged in 1944. After his discharge he returned to Iowa and in 1945 they moved to Glendive. In 1953, they moved to Miles City, where he started working with New York Life Insurance. After 26 years of service he retired in 1979. Mel and Bert have resided in Miles City since.

For 53 years he was a member of the Elks Club; he was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd and 4th degree, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, American Legion, and a charter member of the Miles City Lions Club. In his earlier days, Mel enjoyed hunting, and later, golf, watching sports, or TV, and enjoyed his antique cars.

Mel is survived by his wife, Bert Hathaway of Miles City; two sons: Ron Hathaway and his wife, Ginny of Miles City and Jim Hathaway and his wife, Norma of Billings; two daughters: Kay Fiechtner of Miles City and Mary Anne Mader and Jim Torchia of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers: Joe Hathaway and his wife, Pat of Glendive and Jerry Hathaway and his wife, Helen of Sacramento, Calif.; one sister; Mary Dreckman and her husband, Clarence of Lindstrom, Minn.; 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and his favorite pet, Mitsy. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Harold, Jack and Bob, and four grandchildren.

A special rosary will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Ursuline Convent. Vigil services will be held Thursday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Aug. 7, at 11 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Gil Hemauer-Capuchin celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the family lot in the Calvary cemetery with Military Rites. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Holy Rosary Hospice, 2600 Wilson, Miles City, MT 59301, or the Convent Keepers, 1411 Leighton Blvd., Miles City, MT 59301.

Francis E. Hecker
LOVELL, Wyo. - Francis E. Hecker, 75, died Aug. 3, 1998, of a stroke in Lovell. Francis was born Nov. 15, 1922, in Miles City, Mont., to John T. and Elizabeth Schleder Hecker.
He married Ruth Nelson of Silesia, Mont., on Oct. 1, 1945, and they had four children. The couple lived in Billings, Pryor, and Reed Point, Mont., and in Hyattville, moving to Lovell in 1956.

Francis attended school in Sumatra, Mont., graduating from high school in 1940. He attended Eastern Montana College and received his BA degree from Rocky Mountain College. He earned an MA in education from Montana State College in Bozeman.

He served in the U.S. Navy for a short time. His real love was education and he served the children of Montana and Wyoming for 40 years. He started his career in education in Reed Point and he taught elementary, junior high, and high school students. He became the elementary school principal in Lovell in 1961, a position he held until his retirement in 1987. He prided himself on knowing the name of every student in his school. He particularly enjoyed his work with the children of migrant farm workers and directed a migrant summer school for 20 years.

Francis loved politics, serving the Democratic Party, campaigning, going to meetings, and arguing. He held several state and local offices in the Democratic Party over the years. He shared his passion for politics and history with his children.

After he retired from the school system he continued to serve the community as a volunteer at the Lovell Visitors Center and at the Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed camping and fishing, especially with his grandchildren. He liked to travel and loved exploring historical places across the country with his brothers and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruth; his children, Betty Hecker and her husband, Kerry Burns of Boise, Idaho, Ruth Anne Hecker and her husband, Ray Kline of Berthoud, Colo., Mike and Laurie Hecker of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Steven Hecker of Pahaska Tepee; his grandchildren, Kelta, Sarah, Lexi, Ty, Christian, Erin, Robert, Kara, Toby, and Travis, his brothers and sister, Alice and Mack Love of Three Forks, Mont., Richard and Diane Hecker of Fort Collins, Colo., Vincent and Holly Hecker of Rockville, Md., and Jerome and Frances Hecker of Forsyth, Mont.; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth, and his granddaughter, Meredyth Burns.

Services will be at the Lovell United Methodist Church on Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at 1 p.m. with burial at the Rockvale cemetery at 5 p.m. Friends may call at the Haskell Funeral Home in Lovell, Thursday evening between 6 and 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Lovell Senior Citizens Center or the Medicine Lodge Camp Ground in Hyattville.

Richard 'Dick' Blee
Richard "Dick" Blee, 59, died on the Rimrocks above Billings while enjoying life with his family and friends on Aug. 2, 1998.
Richard was born in Billings on Dec. 15, 1938, a son of Carroll and Elsie Blee. He attended school in Billings, graduating from Senior High in 1957. After attending college at E.M.C., Dick married Juanita M. Deichl on Jan. 16, 1960. Except for two years in Ventura, Calif., he called Billings home all his life.

Mr. Blee worked for the Billings Fire Department, serving as acting fire chief at the time of his retirement in 1989, and was the president of American Neon Signs. His family and time spent outdoors were Dick's primary loves.

Richard is survived by his wife, Juanita; two sons, Kristopher of England and Kirk of Billings; his mother, Elsie Blee, and two brothers, Ralph and Leland, all of Billings; grandchildren, Alexandra Marie Blee, Jaryd Kristopher Logan, Jacob Douglas Logan, and Tucker John Logan; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Dick was preceded in death by his father and a granddaughter, Aiyanna Terese Blee.

A private gathering for family is planned with no formal services scheduled. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Richard Blee and his granddaughter, Aiyanna, who died as a result of Trisome complications, to S.O.F.T., "Support Organization for Trisome," c/o Karen Dewey, 710 Melville Ave., West Burlington, Iowa 52655. Smith West Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Hilda Columbus
RED LODGE - Hilda Columbus, 91, of 416 N. Broadway, Red Lodge, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, after a long battle with emphysema and heart disease.
Born on Dec. 4, 1906, in Hoboken, N.J., to Fred and Catherine Schneider, Hilda later moved with her parents and siblings to Red Lodge where her father went into the meat business and Hilda attended school. During her life she worked as a legal secretary, clerk of the district court, and journal clerk for the Montana House of Representatives.

She married Sanford E. Richeson in 1926, and lived in Sacramento for a time before returning to Red Lodge. They had one son, Jim Richeson. She was divorced in 1938.

Hilda married Walter F. Columbus in 1945. Together with Ed and Laura Nordstrom they operated two Texaco stations, the Beartooth Cabins, and the Beartooth Cortel (now the Old Town Square). They had one daughter, Anne Dobney of Anaconda. Hilda also worked as secretary-treasurer of the Rock Creek Water Users Association for more than 40 years.

Hilda was a strong and independent woman with a positive attitude and lots of common sense. She was a compassionate and caring friend and neighbor, known by many for the German coffee cakes she distributed every Christmas. She was a charter member of the Carbon County Memorial Hospital Guild, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Red Lodge Women's Club, and many bridge clubs. In her younger days she enjoyed fishing and hunting. She liked to work crossword puzzles and read extensively, participating in various book clubs. She was a member of the Red Lodge Community Church and was active in their Women's Fellowship. Proud of her German heritage, Hilda supported the Festival of Nations in many ways.

Hilda was preceded in death by her brother, Henry Schneider; her sister, Ellenore Peters; and her husband, Walter F. Columbus.

Survivors include one son, Jim Richeson; daughter-in-law, Marlene Reed and husband, Tom; one daughter, Anne Dobney and husband, Bruce; one sister, Edna Loughney; six grandchildren: Steve Richeson, Jon Richeson and wife, Yadira, Lorrie Baker and husband, Wayne, Rhonda Pieracci and husband, John, Erica Dobney and Warren Dobney; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Owens and Ryan Owens; three nieces: Joann Gloege and husband, Terry, with children, Cameron and Tim; Kay Chelini and husband, Bob, with children, Bonnie and Lori and families; and Carol Scholander and husband, John, with daughters, Elizabeth Scholander and Barbara Kaiser and family; seven nephews: Don Nordstrom, with children, Lance, Tamara and Curtis and families; Jerry Nordstrom and wife, Patti, with children, Jace and Chris and families; Walter Nordstrom and wife, Shari, with children, Mike, Tim and families; Roger Peters and wife, Mary Ann, with children, Amy and Dean and families; Caroline Peters, with children, Pam, Kathy and John David and families; James VanDyke, with children, Heather, Hillary, and Gabriel and families; Dale Schneider and wife, Linda and family; and Bobby Troester and family.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, in the Red Lodge Community Church with Rev. Susan Watterson officiating Graveside Services will follow in the Red Lodge cemetery, after which friends may gather for a reception in the Fireside Room of the Community Church. Memorials may be given to the Beartooth Hospital & Health Center Guild, The Red Lodge Community Church, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

The Olcott Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Olive Kathleen Fugate White
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Olive Kathleen Fugate White passed away at her Sheridan residence on Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at the age of 82.
Olive was born on Sept. 15, 1915, in Correctionville, Iowa, to James S. and Maria Edwards Fugate. She moved to Sheridan 29 years ago after living in Columbia, Tenn., where her three children were born and raised.

She was an artist and belonged to the Sheridan Artist Guild, Phi Theta Kappa of Sheridan College, and the Methodist Church.

Olive was an avid art student at Sheridan College. Her work graces the home of many people in the form of original greeting cards as well as pictures. Her lifelong love of color is expressed in these works.

Preceding her in death were her parents, and four sisters, Marie Collins, Beula Moreland, Betty Cosman, and Trula Heath.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Powell Shillenn of Sheridan and Molly J. Omo of Billings; her son, Tom White of Nashville, Tenn.; her brother, Jim Fugate of Casper; her three grandchildren, Thomas Powell of Sheridan, Samantha Scott of Abilene, Texas, Katy Lu Omo of Billings.

Services for Mrs. White will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Goodwin officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Sheridan College Foundation in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, Wyo. 82801.

Harlie L. Teigen
CAPITOL - Harlie L. Teigen, 62, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at the family ranch south of Capitol.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at the Little Missouri Lutheran Church with interment in the family lot in the Little Missouri Lutheran cemetery, both in Capitol. Stevenson Funeral Home of Ekalaka is in charge.

Melba C. Swenson
Melba C. Swenson, 90, of Billings, passed away Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at the Deaconess Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 6, 1907, in Otto, Wyo., the daughter of Brigham J. and Loae A. (Sanders) Christiansen. She attended Big Horn Academy in Cowley, Wyo., and high school in Basin, Wyo.

She married Torgny W. F. (Tugs) Swenson on Aug. 25, 1933, and they moved to Billings. She was employed by Hart Albin Co. in the Appliance Department. She also did TV commercials for Hart Albins.

She was a member of the Friendship Chapter, OES in Billings and later transferred to the Lewisia Chapter 16 in Basin where she served as worthy Matron. While on the farm in Basin she worked as a deputy clerk for the district court. Later she was elected as Big Horn County Clerk of the district court and served two terms.

After retiring, she and her husband spent many years in Mesa and Florence Gardens, Ariz. They spent their summers working with Hamilton Stores in Yellowstone Park and they returned to live in Billings in 1981.

Survivors include her son, Harold Mileski, Scottsmore, Fla.; granddaughter, Margo Hoar of Helena; two sisters, Marva Bullinger of Otto and Alta Campbell of Billings; also, numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Otto cemetery, Otto, Wyo. Smith Downtown Chapel in charge of arrangements.
