Arthur W. Ayers
(January 1, 1936 - August 13, 1998)
MEDFORD, Ore. - Arthur Wesley Ayers softly snored himself into eternity on an early sunlit morning on Aug. 13, 1998, in his home at 621 Shadow Wood Drive, Medford, following a stroke on Aug. 9. He was surrounded by family as he departed from his Earthly journey into passage to the Heavenly Kingdom.
Arthur W. Ayers was born in Denver, on Jan. 1, 1936, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Ayers and the grandson of Roy E. Ayers, former U.S. congressman and governor of the State of Montana. Mr. Ayers graduated from Cody High School, Cody, Wyo., the University of Wyoming, and received a law degree in 1961 from the University of Montana. He was employed in the Water Litigation Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., until his return to Helena, Mont., in 1964, as an assistant attorney general for the State of Montana under Gov. Forrest Anderson. In February 1965, he became an assistant U.S. attorney for the State of Montana serving in the Billings office.
In Helena, at a Young Democrats meeting, he met his "Poops," the former Patricia L. Rouane of Columbus, Mont. They were united in marriage in Arlington, Va., on July 2, 1965. She was his helpmate, challenger and love.
In January 1969, Arthur opened his private law practice on Main Street in Red Lodge. Mr. Ayers served two terms as county attorney and was appointed city attorney for six years. He was very proud of playing a role in obtaining 36 acres of Burlington Northern land for the City of Red Lodge now being developed into park and commercial growth for the community.
Mr. Ayers loved to travel with his family and his greatest pleasure was planning the trip. One of their favorite vacation spots was the Oregon coast. Arthur also enjoyed opera and classical music, drama, camping, photography, reading, telling stories and jokes. He was clever, had a knack for words and a quick wit. And, he never needed an excuse to get into a costume.
Arthur particularly loved little children and he "wowed" them by squeaking his ears with the palm of his hand and talking like Donald Duck. He could also magically make nickels and dimes appear from behind their ears.
Arthur liked to entertain in the home and along with the locals, family and friends, there were many foreign visitors and exchange students who broke bread at the table. He was good at helping with the cooking but never at cleaning up the mess. During the cocktail hour, Arthur enjoyed his martini.
Arthur played ping-pong. When the "See 'em Alive Zoo" was operating on the south end of Red Lodge, Arthur gathered weekly with male friends to play the game. All delighted in exchanging male mirth and merriment in the monkey house. He also played bridge and poker and sometimes got lucky.
Mr. Ayers was a member of Red Lodge Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Inquiry Club and Rodeo Association. He served as a director on the Hospital Foundation Board and Beartooth Nature Center. He helped with a number of fund-raisers, including ones for a City ambulance, tennis court and a swimming pool. Mr. Ayers served on several boards in the Judicial field, including the State Board of Crime Control.
For almost 20 years, Mr. Ayers was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church and served as a lay-reader, chalice bearer and lay Eucharistic minister. He served on the Vestry several times. He had a lot of faith in the Lord and it sustained him through many bouts of health problems due to 54 years of being an insulin dependent diabetic. He was a stubborn man and never complained about his health.
Due to dialysis for over a year and his being cold all the time, the Ayers moved to Medford, November 1996, to be in a warmer climate and closer to their children. During his 21 months in the Rogue Valley, Arthur rafted the Rogue River, attended Shakespearean Festival productions in Ashland and enjoyed summer evening picnics at the Britt Festival in Jacksonville, watching some of his favorite entertainers. He attended many live theater productions in the area, including "Jesus Christ Super Star" only days before he died. He delighted in being able to be with his children more often, whom he was very proud of. He loved their spouses, too. Arthur was there moments after his grandson, Ian, was born. Arthur got to see and visit with his grandson often. Little Ian, now 18-months-old, became one of Arthur's final greatest joys.
Survivors include his wife, Pat of Medford; son, Jonathan and his wife, Shannon of Portland; daughter, Erika and husband, Greg Schulz and their son, Ian Patrick Ayers Schulz; and a sister, Nancy Coiner of Morris Plains, N.J. He is also survived by his in-laws, nieces and nephews. All will miss his relish for life, zest of spirit and wonderful smile.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held in Red Lodge on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. in St. Agnes Catholic Church. Memorials in memory of Arthur may be sent to: Calvary Episcopal Church, Box 348, Red Lodge, Mont. 59068; Beartooth Hospital and Health Center Foundation, Box 1666, Red Lodge, Mont. 59068; or Beartooth Nature Center, Box 675, Red Lodge, Mont. 59068.
