Verna Estelle Kirklin
Verna Estelle Kirklin, 94, died quietly on Saturday, Aug. 2, 1998, at Eagle Cliff Manor where she had resided the last two years.
Verna was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved to attend church when she was able to. She held various positions in the church, primary teacher, Relief Society teacher, and loved doing them.
Verna was born in Glenraven, Tenn., on Aug. 14, 1903, to Lenzy Lou Woods and Louise Wiggleton. She had twin brothers, Lesley and Wesley, (Wesley died at birth), and two sisters, Obera Duncan and Lola Wright.
She married Robert Thomas Kirklin on Oct. 18, 1918. They were sealed for all eternity on Oct. 11, 1945, in the Salt Lake Temple. Verna is preceded in death by husband, Robert; her mother and father; her sisters and brothers; two daughter, Bertha Juanita and Geneva Garner; and one grandson, Bob Garner.
Survivors are son, James and wife, Marianne; son, George and wife, Dorothy; son-in-law, Bryce Garner, husband of Geneva, who is deceased; daughter, Mary and husband, Fred Bingham; daughter, Jeri and husband, Ken Maugus; 19 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Mother loved her family and enjoyed living. Most of all, she loved her church.
She will be missed very much, but she was tired and ready to meet her loved ones on the other side.
Viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Monday at Smith Downtown Chapel. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 7, in Denver, Colo., and burial will be at Chapel Hill cemetery in Littleton, Colo.

Martha B. LaFountain
LEWISTOWN - Martha B. LaFountain, 80, of Lewistown, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at the Central Montana Medical Center.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Creel Funeral Chapel, with interment in the Lewistown City cemetery.

William S. Mather
William S. Mather passed away Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at his home in Mission Ridge in Billings.
He was born May 19, 1922, in Lewistown, to Anne (Bechman) and W.S. Mather. His youth was spent on the family farm on Cassino Creek near Lewistown. He graduated from Lewistown High School in 1939, and was proud of the fact he was a High Flying Fergus County Golden Eagle. In 1948, he graduated from the University of Montana Law School where he was a member of the S.A.E. Fraternity and was a varsity football player for the Grizzlies
From 1943 to 1946, he served with the U.S. Army and was overseas for 17 months during World War II.
On July 20, 1944, he married Dorothy Martin while stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga.
Following graduation from law school they settled in Roundup, where he was a partner of Walt Mercer and later Tom Ask. In 1965, they moved to Billings where Bill became a partner in the law firm of Moulton, Bellingham, Longo & Mather, retiring in 1995.
He enjoyed serving in the Montana Legislature in the House of Representatives from 1965 to 1971, and in 1969, he ran for the U.S. Congress from the Second Congressional District.
Bill was a member of the Al Bedoo Shrine, Rotary Club, Montana Bar Association, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Billings, Calvary Church in Red Lodge, the Hilands Golf Club and Yellowstone Country Club.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy; sons, W.S. (Bill) Mather and his wife, Georgine of Gillette, Wyo., and Rugga and his wife, Carole of Missoula; grandsons, Sam and Greg Mather of Gillette; and granddaughters, Brooke and Whitney Mather of Missoula. A brother, Richard Mather and wife Jane of Oceanside, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Mary Ann Smith of Illinois; and a brother, Charles Mather of Tennessee.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
Memorials may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church or The National Parkinsons Foundation (Research), 1501 NW 9th Ave., Bob Hope Road, Miami, Fla. 33136-1494.

Lucille McNelly
Lucille McNelly of Billings died 10 days after her 83rd birthday.
She died on July 31, 1998, at her home under Hospice care. Lucille was born in Bemidji, Minn., on July 21, 1915, the daughter of Louis and Cecilia (Fellerer) Werner. On May 15, 1939, Lucille was united in marriage to Bernard "Bernie" McNelly in Bemidji. In 1948, they moved to Montana.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and caring for her family and reading. Lucille was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Billings.
Survivors include her husband, Bernie of the family home; two daughters, Patricia and husband, Gary Wicks of Anoka, Minn., LuAnn and husband, Frank Wilberg of Billings; one son, William and wife, Kelli Werner of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Donna Eichstadt of Bemidji, Winnie Dalzell of Onieda, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Margaret A. Riley, Alexandria, Va.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Louis Werner, Jr., Dick Werner, Bobby Werner; a sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Roger Sladky; sister-in-law, Mary E. Heald; brothers-in-law, Thomas L. McNelly, William D. McNelly.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Billings. Interment at a later date in Bemidji, Minn.
Memorials may be made to the Big Sky Hospice, Box 35033, Billings, Mont. 59107.

Joy Irene Nash
BOZEMAN - Joy Irene Nash, 80,passed away on Monday, July 27, 1998, at her home in Bozeman of natural causes. She was born on Feb. 13, 1918, in Salina, Kan. to James K, and Ida (Samuelson) McKie. She graduated from Foil Hays Teachers College and went on to teach at Oberlin Elementary School. She served in the U.S. Coast Guard (SPARS) during WWII.
She was a secretary for both Crown Zellerbach in San Francisco and later for Governor Aronson. Joy married William Frank Nash in 1954 in Townsend. Following her husband's death she went on to be a State Legislator. She later moved to Bozeman, and became a county commissioner. Joy was a 43 year active member of AA and initiated alcohol recovery programs at the Warm Springs State Hospital, where she also served as a counselor.
She is survived by brother and sister-in-law, James and Nora McKie; step-children Pat, Peter, and Jack Nash; brothers-in-law, John T. and Don Nash; sisters-in-law Kathryn Moore and Joan Garrison; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank Nash; and a stepson, Dick Nash.
A memorial Mass for Joy will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Bozeman. Cremation has taken place. Memorials in her name may be made to Carroll College; Joy Nash Scholarship Fund, C/O Jim McKie, P.O. Box 1302, Bozeman, Mont. 59715. Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Sand
SCOBEY - Bernice Sand, 80, of Scobey, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at the Daniels Memorial Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Scobey Lutheran Church, interment in the Scobey cemetery. Waller Funeral Home is in charge.

Ella Marie Ennis Burris
CODY, Wyo. - Ella Marie Ennis Burris, 82, died Friday, July 31, 1998, at her home.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Ballard Funeral Home, with interment at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside cemetery in Thermopolis, Wyo.

Rose Mary Cochran
HAYS - Rose Mary Cochran, 95, died Friday, July 31, 1998, at her home in Old Hays, of natural cuases.
Wake services will be Sunday, Aug. 2, at the Robert "Bobby" Cochran Home at Hays. Rosary will be 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at St. Paul's Mission in Hays. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at St. Paul's Mission, with interment in the Jones Family cemetery in Hays. Adams Funeral Home is in charge.

Esther Ellen Cole
Esther Ellen Cole went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, after a hard seven-year fight with cancer. With the help of family and friends, she was able to remain in her home throughout her illness.
She was born Jan. 28, 1911, in Lexington, Neb. to Carl Orthman and Mabel Gunn-Orthman. She later lived in Billings with her parents while they ran a dairy farm. She attended Mt. Ellis Academy in Bozeman for two years. She married Verle Cole in 1933. They lived in Hysham, where they owned and operated a family farm with their only son, Alvin, until their son's death in 1983. She moved to Billings after the death of her husband in 1988.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Verle Cole; her son, Alvin Cole; a brother, Boyd Orthman; a brother, Carl Orthman; and a sister, Beulah Sergeant. She leaves a daughter-in-law, Harriett Hudson and her husband, Ed of Billings; a granddaughter, Tami Hawkins and her husband, Tim of Billings; a grandson, Todd Cole and his wife, Sherlyn of Seattle Wash.; a brother, Clettis Orthman of Billings; a sister, Audrey Vanek and her husband Otto of Burley, Idaho; and three great-grandsons, Kyle, Cody, and Colin Cole of Seattle, Wash.
She enjoyed gardening, oil painting, arranging flowers, spending time with family and friends. Her sheer determination was matched by few, and she will be missed by many.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, Alderson Chapel with interment in the Hysham cemetery. Memorials can be made to First Church of the Nazarene, Billings or Gideons International, Box 20024, Billings, Mont.

Eva Sophie DePuy
LIVINGSTON - Eva Sophie DePuy, 93, of Livingston, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, in Livingston.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Pine Creek United Methodist Church south of Livingston. There will be a time of refreshment and remembrance in the home of Eva DePuy, 4810 U.S. Highway 89 South following the service. Franzen-Davis Funeral Home is in charge.

Helena H. Hedstrom
Helena H. Hedstrom, 98 of Billings, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998 at St. John's Lutheran Home where she had been a longtime resident.
The daughter of Josef and Katherina Petrik, Helena was born Oct. 1, 1899, in Tabor, SD. She received her teachers certification from Poly Technic in Billings. Helen had worked summers in Yellowstone Park before moving to Minneapolis to work as a waitress at the Nicolet Hotel where she met Victor Hedstrom. They married Feb. 14, 1931. They made their home in Minneapolis, Albert Lea, and the Chicago area where Victor was a tool and die maker. Following his retirement they moved to Billings.
Helena enjoyed crocheting, and painting in oils and acrylics.
Survivors include her sister, Verna Fischbach of Billings; 16 nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin 1 p.m. Monday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Home. Private interment at Mountview cemetery is planned.
Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Home.

Gary Jackson Hugs Sr.
PRYOR - Gary Jackson Hugs Sr., 32, of Pryor died July 30,1998 of injuries sustained in a one car rollover north of Pryor.
He was born Oct. 18, 1965 in Crow Agency, a son of Jacqueline Lee Bravo and Oliver "Sonny" Hugs. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Betty and Rod Caufield. He attended grade school in Lodge Grass, until the family moved to Pryor in 1979. He later attended junior high school at the Whapaton Boarding School in Whapaton, N.D., and graduated from high school in 1985 from Plenty Coups High School in Pryor. While in high school, he participated in sports and excelled in basketball. As a young man, Gary was active in youth rodeos, "ropin' and ridin'."
Following his education, Gary traveled throughout the United States, meeting and making many friends. During his travels, he still took time to attend vo-tech and job corps training, receiving certificates for small engines, auto mechanics and welding. While in Oklahoma, he worked for the forestry department, helping train young men to fight forest fires. This year with new requirements for fire fighting tests, he set a new performance record.
Gary took great pride in his talents, often finding anything he could get his hands on that needed fixing. Once the job was completed, he would stand back and smile that warm fun loving smile. He always had a smile no matter what the situation. He was such a warm and friendly person that whomever he met along the way knew that they'd gained a friend for life and could count on him for anything. He returned home to Pryor in February of 1998 to make a home for himself and his children. He was currently employed by the Crow Tribe and was scheduled to assist with the completion of the new Pryor Clinic.
He often spent many hours with his nieces and nephews, taking pride in them and telling them of his travels. He always encouraged them to do well in school and the value of an education.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother, "Jackie Lee."
Survivors include two sons, Gary Hugs Jr. of Billings and Oliver J. Hugs of Riverton, Wyo.; and one daughter, Valerie Hugs of Billings; his father, Sonny Hugs of St. Xavier; his adopted parents, Rod and Betty Caufield of Pryor; five brothers, Cedric Big Timber, Oliver of Hardin, Robert of Lapwai, Idaho, Larry Alden and Rod Rondeau of Calif.; eight sisters, Roseanne and Genevieve Bravo of Hardin, Sarah Hugs of St. Xavier, Relies Hugs of Billings, Mary Berg, Orvilene Goes Ahead, Rhonda Badura and Robin Caufield of Pryor; his grandmother, Wynona Plenty Hoops of Lodge Grass; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss him dearly, but remember him fondly.
We love you Gary, GOD bless and we'll see you soon.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Lodge Grass cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Beulah Jacques
MESA, Ariz. - Beulah Jacques, age 86, of Mesa, formerly of Musselshell, Mont., died June 7, 1998. She was born in Bedford, Iowa. Survivors include her daughter, Jacqueline Adolph of Tempe; son, William Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; sister, Ruby O'Neil of Mesa; four grandchildren and three grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held Aug. 7, at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Roundup, Mont.

Linda Loraine Long
PORTLAND, Ore. - A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral for Linda Loraine Long, who died July 1, 1998, at age 46.
Linda was born July 3, 1951, in Billings. She moved to Portland, Ore., in 1985, and was a homemaker and child care provider for 15 years.
Survivors include her daughters, Lynnette Wynkoop and Amanda Wilcox, both of Corvallis, Ore.; son, Kevin Wilcox, and father, Harley Long both of Billings; mother, Lorraine Fleming Long, and sister, Patty Sncyd, both of Port Orchard, Wash.; brothers, Gary Long of Denver, Colo., and Harley Long Jr. of Billings; and two grandchildren.
Disposition was by cremation and entombment will be at Lavina cemetery. Family suggests remembrances to the Center Against Domestic Violence in Corvallis, Ore.

Earl Henry Lowell
MILES CITY - Earl Henry Lowell, 98, of Miles City, died Friday, July 31, 1998, at the Friendship Villa.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, in the Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel with interment in the Custer County cemetery. Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel of Miles City is in charge.
