Merritt M. McCarty
WEST BRANCH, Iowa - Merritt M. McCarty, 75, of West Branch, formerly of Hardin, died in Mercy Hospital in West Branch.
Graveside services will be 10:30 Monday, Aug. 3, in the Hardin Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin is in charge.

Lloyd Kjar Nielsen
SIDNEY - Funeral services for Lloyd Kjar Nielsen, 64, of Sidney are at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Pella Lutheran Church in Sidney. Interment with military honors provided by the V.F.W. Post 4099 of Sidney will be in the Sidney cemetery under the direction of the Fulkerson Funeral Home.
Lloyd K. Nielsen of Sidney, passed away Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at his home. He was born in Sidney, MT, on September 6, 1933, the son of Niels K. and Mary Olivia (Andersen) Nielsen of Denmark. He was the youngest of four children.
In 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, A. Patricia (Pat) Merrill which turned into a lasting marriage for 44 years. Lloyd signed up for the navy in September of 1950 to 1954, and returned to Sidney for four years to work as a bartender at the Moose Lodge, and worked with the youth group in Sidney. He signed back up for the navy again in 1958, as a Signalman and continued his service career until he retired as a First class Signalman with full honors in November of 1973. During his career he served his country during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. While in the service the family was able to travel with him and live in different parts of the world such as Japan and Italy.
He retired in Sumner, Wash., where he lived until 1992. Lloyd worked for the Sumner School District as a carpenter and also did small contracting. In 1992, he moved back to his home town of Sidney. In Sidney he enjoyed working in his garage with wood projects with his wife, and teaching his grandchildren some of the art's of wood crafting. Lloyd was known and loved for his sense of humor and warm smile. He loved having coffee and visiting with friends within the community. One of his other more enjoyable times was on Sundays when he was watching the Oakland Raiders football team. He was a true fan of theirs from the 1960's to now.
He was an active member of the Elks Lodge, the Moose Lodge, and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 4099 of Sidney.
Survivors include his wife, A. Patricia of Sidney; a son Ronald K. (Sharon) Nielsen of Sumner, Wash.; a daughter, Jan L. (Blaine) Getchell of Sidney; his mother, Olivia Nielsen, 97, of Richland Homes; a brother, Don K. (Marlene) Nielsen of Hereford, Texas; two sisters, Wilda Mae (Joe) Cuendet of Seattle, Wash., and Ruth (Doug) Timmerman of Franktown, Colo.; six grandchildren, Kevin K., Robert K., and Craig K. Nielsen, and Skylynn R., Alysia L., and Chandra D. Getchell; numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, Niels Kjar Nielsen.

Helen Emily Voelker
Helen Emily Voelker, 78 of Billings. died Friday, July 31, 1998 at the Deaconess Hospital. Helen will be remembered for her sweetness, strength, and graciousness. The daughter of Godfrey and Matilda Wagner Holloway, Helen was born April 26, 1920 in Butte. A graduate of the University of Montana, Helen managed the Montana State Water Lab in Helena for many years, leaving in 1968 to marry John C. Voelker of Billings. A warm outgoing person, Helen was a friend to all. Helen was a great bird lover and enjoyed hot air balloons. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband John of Billings; two daughters, Susan Ann Newman of New Albany, Ind., and her daughter Erika Newman of Dillon; and Beth Lucking Haug, her husband, Finn and their children, Christopher and Jessica of Long Lake, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Alice Walters and her husband C.W. (Bill), of Billings.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Holloway.
She will be greatly missed.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services at Westpark Village are pending.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

H.L. 'Lee' Wolf
At the age of 54, H.L. "Lee" Wolf of Billings, died at Deaconess Hospital. Lee was born June 26, 1944, in Hobbs, N.M. the son of Herschel and Elsamae (Harris) Wolf.
In 1962, he graduated from Bloomfield High School in New Mexico. He later graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Arts in Business.
Lee served in the U.S. Army. He attended Officer Candidate School at Ft. Sill in Lawton, Okla., and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lt. after serving in Germany during the Vietnam Conflict.
For the past five years, Lee worked as an area manager for RGIS Inventory Specialists in Billings.
He was a member of Delta Sigma Pi fraternity. Lee was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan but enjoyed watching all sports. Lee loved his three grandchildren dearly.
Survivors include his two daughters, Alicia Sperry and Gina Burke; grandchildren, Matthew, Tyler and Trenton, all of Billings; his mother, Elsamae Wolf of Monument, N.M.; two brothers, Bill of Gilbert, Ariz., Lyle of Kearns, Utah; and one sister, Sue Lynn Bernhardt of Monument, N.M.
Memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at Dahl Funeral Chapels in Billings. Cremation has taken place. Interment will be at a later date.
Memorials may be made to: Mont. Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 1242 North 28th, Billings, Mont. 59101; or to the Special Olympics, Box 3507, Great Falls, Mont. 59403-3507.

Donald Lewis Briner
Donald Lewis Briner, 77, of Billings, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, after a long and courageous struggle with heart problems.
Don was born March 6, 1921, in Sheridan, Wyo., a son of George Lewis Briner and Bessie Woodall. The first six years of his life were spent in Sheridan until his family settled in the Clark, Wyo., area where he was raised and educated.
Don was united in marriage to Shirley Trulock Christensen on June 14, 1958, in Sidney. Shirley was the love of his life, and he was so thrilled to have recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary together.
During World War II, Don served as a gunner and radar operator on the USS Oakland. After his discharge in 1945, he was employed by several trucking firms as a truck driver, including Hi Ball Trucking, Wilbur Sheely Trucking, and Williard Drinkwater Trucking until 1973, when he was involved in a truck accident and permanently disabled.
Spending time with his family, caring for his beloved grandchildren and attending their sporting events brought him much joy.
Don had a passion for woodwork and spent much of his time building unique and interesting pieces of furniture, clocks and lamps. He was also very proud of his teacup and bottle collections.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; a daughter and son-in-law, Bobbi and Al Blain, and grandchildren AJ, Erin and Bridger of Billings; a son, Donald of Billings; a stepdaughter and her husband, Pam and Rick Damron of Monroe, Wash., and grandson Travis Bales and his fiancee, Theresa Lackard of Cheney, Wash.; a stepson and his wife, Monty and Holly Christensen and grandchildren, Jared and his wife, Niki of San Deigo, Calif., Joshua, Shawn and Jonathan of Butte; his brother and sister-in-law, George and Dorie Briner of Columbia Falls, Mont.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; one brother; and a daughter, Sandra.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at the Smith West Chapel. Cremation has taken place. Interment of cremains will take place Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be directed to Blue Creek School, PTA Memorial Library Book Fund, c/o Cindy Kennedy, 6900 Rocky Paint Road, Billings, Mont. 59101.

Gwynneth 'Jean' Doyle
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Gwynneth "Jean" Doyle died in the early morning hours of July 29, 1998, at the age of 69.
She was born March 28, 1929, in Cardiff, South Wales, Great Britain, to Robert Gwynn and Gladys Thomas. She came to Sheridan to marry Larry Doyle in 1955. She is survived by her three sons, Clinton and wife, Kim Doyle of Sheridan, Raymond and Benny Doyle, both of Billings; two sisters, Sylvia Harrington and Dilys Bodin, both of South Wales; and three grandsons.
Jean was known and loved by many as a caring and loving person and compassionate listener. People knew her from the Maverick Country Store, which she managed for many years in the '70s and '80s. Her hobbies were children. Jean was never without a child in her arms. Her two grandsons, Preston and Hunter, were her world, as well as Jessie Doyle, Hattie and Tyler Oatts, and Brock and Zachary Grasky.
Jean was her happiest when she was around children. These children are truly blessed to have had such a wonderful person in their lives. She also leaves behind good friends of many years. We love you Jean.
Preceding Mrs. Doyle in death were her parents and one sister, Edna West of Wales.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at Kane Funeral Home with Reverend Ray Clark officiating.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart and Lung Association in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, Wyo. 82801.

Helen Walter Fritzler
LAUREL - Helen Walter Fritzler, 86, of Laurel, passed away Thursday, July 30, 1998, after a long illness at her residence in Laurel. She was a daughter of George and Katherine Walter, born Feb. 19, 1912, at Walla Walla, Wash.
She married Alex Fritzler Jr. on Aug. 27, 1932, in Laurel. They were lifelong residents of Laurel. Helen was a waitress in Laurel and Billings. She was a charter member of Grace Bible Church in Laurel and was very active.
Survivors include her husband, Alex of Laurel; two sons, Gerald and his wife, Laurie of Littleton, Colo., and Dick and his wife, Shirley of Fountain Valley, Calif.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Esther Weschenfelder of Laurel.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel. Interment will be held in the Laurel cemetery. Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel was in charge of arrangements.

William W. Haskell
William W. Haskell, 80, died July 30, 1998, in Billings.
Survivors include his wife, Marie; son, John and wife, Jan of Omaha, Neb.; son, Chuck and wife, Mary of Gering, Neb.; daughter, Jean and spouse, Chuck of Tekamah, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; sister, Marie Bakken of Sun City, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Carolyn Haskell of Sun City West, Ariz.; and five stepsons.
Mr. Haskell was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel; son, Andy; infant twins; a brother and sister; and his parents.
A Memorial service is to be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at the United Presbyterian Church in Laurel, Neb. Memorials may be directed to the United Presbyterian Church, Laurel, Neb.

Anne Pollari Norman
BIG TIMBER - Anne Pollari Norman, 93, formerly of Red Lodge, died at the Pioneer Medical Center in Big Timber, July 29, 1998. She was born in the Finnish colony of Waterford, Conn., June 14, 1905, the daughter of Antti and Josefinna Pollari, both of Ylinetali, Finland.
Her father had mined in Red Lodge prior to 1890 when he journeyed to Hyannis, Mass., to meet his future wife, Josefinna Penttila, whom he had known in Finland. They were married in 1891 and returned to Red Lodge taking the train as far as Laurel and the coal train to Red Lodge. Antti continued mining for several years until returning to Finland to try farming. Several years later the couple again moved to Waterford where five children were born - Wayne, Anne, Olga, Matt and John.
Anne was 4 years of age when the family returned to Red Lodge in 1909. She attended Red Lodge schools with the summers of her later years spent at Camp Senia where she developed a great love for the out-of-doors. Having trained as a bookkeeper at Spokane Business College, she traveled to both coasts using her skill in various jobs. She married Cliff Norman in Seattle and they lived in San Diego, Calif., until moving to Big Timber in November 1986.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and a sister, Senia Croonquist. She is survived by her sister, Olga Middelton, and a sister-in-law, Helen Pollari, both of Big Timber; also, nieces, Helen Winkley of Big Timber and Senia Hart of Red Lodge; nephews, Wayne Pollari of Big Timber, James Fleming of Billings and A. H. Croonquist of Seattle.
Funeral services will be held at the Lowry Funeral Home in Big Timber, 2 p.m. Aug. 3, 1998. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery in Big Timber.

Ella Onstott
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Ella Onstott, age 88, of Sheridan, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
She was born April 26, 1910, in Liverpool, England, to Samuel and Maria (Boechel) Miller.
The family immigrated from Germany to Russia, then to Mercer County, N.D., through England, with Ella being born during this trip. She received her early education in Zap, N.D. Ella married Bert F. Onstott on April 30, 1928, in Stanton, N.D. They lived in Post Falls, Idaho, Butte and Gardiner, Mont., before moving to Livingston, Mont., in 1983. Bert died in 1989. Ella returned to Butte in 1992 and then in 1994 moved to Sheridan. Ella's special interest in life was always her family first. She also enjoyed gardening, playing cards and fishing.
She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Pat O'Hern in 1996.
She is survived by her sons, L.D. Mike Onstott of Sheridan, Gerald Onstott of Sterling, Alaska, and Tommy Onstott of Helena, Mont.; daughter, Dorothy O'Hern of Butte; half-brothers, Malvin Miller of Golden Valley, N.D., Elmer Miller of Perlata, N.M., and Gilbert Miller of Wolf Point, Mont.; sister, Jean Boussard of Post Falls; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 10, from the Gardiner Community Church, Gardiner, Mont., with the Rev. William Young officiating. A reception will follow the service. Arrangements with Ferries Funeral Home, Sheridan.
Memorials may benefit the donor's choice.

Herbert R. Perry
Herbert R. Perry, 90, of Billings, formerly of Missoula, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at Western Manor Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 3, 1907, in Missoula, where he was raised and educated.
He was a mill worker for Inter-Mountain Lumber for many years. A long-standing member of the VFW, he also belonged to AARP. Herb enjoyed watching baseball and travel. He has made his home in Billings since 1985.
His wife, Erma, preceded him in death in 1984.
Survivors include his daughter, Gloria Williams of Billings, four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside services in Sunset Memorial cemetery, Missoula, are planned for a later date.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James F. Spelman
RED LODGE - James F. "Jim" Spelman died peacefully on July 29, 1998, in Red Lodge, after living 81 active years. He was born on Feb. 14, 1917, the third of four children to Mayme Brennan and John Spelman in Anaconda.
Jim attended the University of Montana on a football scholarship and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. After graduation he went to work for Balfor Jewelry Company. In 1941, Jim and Mary Ruth Ryan were united in marriage in Billings. Also in 1941 he enlisted in the Army and attained the rank of captain before his discharge. Mary and Jim moved to Butte after WWII with their two children, Lynne and James Jr., where Jim began his career with Carpenter Paper Co. He was transferred to Billings in 1948 and became District Manager of Carpenter Paper. Their third child, Michael, was born in Billings.
Jim changed careers in 1961 when he became vice-president and Director of Business Development at the First National Bank. His presence was always felt in the Billings community through his many civic endeavors. He was President of the Chamber of Commerce, a Charter member of the Billings Exchange Club. Instrumental in the Head Start Program and the Blue Blazers of the Billings Chamber, Jim, at one time, was honored as one of the 14 outstanding civic leaders of America. His commitment to his religion was apparent to all. After he retired to Red Lodge, he became a vital member of St. Agnes Parish. The parishioners enjoyed his Irish tenor.
Jim's passion for ski racing took him to several ski resorts around the country. This passion, combined with his competitive and tenacious Irish spirit, helped him win numerous medals competing in the Masters Program.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ryan Spelman; daughter, Lynne Shaurette; son, Michael and wife, Vickie; brother, John B. Spelman; grandchildren, Lisa Fallon and husband, Philip, Jim Shaurette and wife, Leanne, Trevor Spelman and wife, Pam, and Megan Spelman; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Connor, and Thomas Fallon. Jim was preceded in death by his son, James Jr., and son-in-law, Dale Shaurette.
A vigil service will be held 7 p.m. Friday. Funeral mass at 11 a.m. Saturday. Both services will be at St. Agnes Church in Red Lodge. Private family interment Sunset Memorial Gardens. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be directed to: St. Agnes Church Building Fund, 11th St. Ward, Red Lodge, 59068, or Eagle Mount Ski Program, 2822 Third Ave. N., Billings, 59101.
