Norma Sharpe Williams
JERUSALEM, Ark. - Norma Sharpe Williams, 66 of Jerusalem, formerly of Billings and Hardin, Mont., died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Hillcrest Medical Center, Tulsa, Okla., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
The daughter of Emery (Paul) and Nora Sharpe, Norma was born July 17, 1932, in Dunning, Neb. She was married to Earl Schlaht from 1947 to 1957; they had five children together. In September of 1982, she married Roy Williams in Denver, Colo. Their families became one big family, Norma loved them all dearly.

Norma and Roy lived in Denver, then moved to Jerusalem. They built a beautiful life together. They operated a small store in Jerusalem. Norma loved collecting antiques and crystal. She enjoyed crocheting and shopping. She will be missed very much by family and friends. "Mom, grandma, we all LOVE YOU very much and we will miss you a lot."

Survivors include her husband, Roy of Jerusalem; five children, Ken Schlaht and his wife, Eileen, Vivian Seifert, and Janet Clark and her husband, Duane, all of Billings, Larry Schlaht of Rawlins, Wyo., and Dena Schlaht with Connie Olson of Bozeman; three stepchildren, Frances Burns and her husband, David of Dallas, Karen Dee and her husband, Scott, and Robert Williams, all of Denver; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers and sisters, Pat Vandersloot and her husband, Richard, Frank Sharpe and his wife, Agnes, all of Hardin, and Pauline Studt and her husband, Don of Albarge, Wyo., Sharon Kuck and her husband, Vernon of Windsor, Colo., James Sharpe and his wife, Nancy of Phoenix and Barbara Southard and her husband, Darris of Aldrich, Mo.

Norma was preceded by her father, Paul, and mother, Nora, and brother, Willis Sharpe.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services are pending.

Arthur Kegel
MILES CITY - Arthur Kegel was born on Jan. 21, 1912, in Minnesota, to Charles and Anna Kegel. Mr. Kegel died on Nov. 12, 1998.
The oldest of 10 children, Mr. Kegel was raised on a ranch at Turner, and attended schools there. He graduated from Montana State University with a Bachelor of Science and Master's Degree in Agricultural Science. He taught animal science at MSU and was a member of Alpha Zeta Honorary. Mr. Kegel left his teaching position at the University to enlist in the Army during WWII. After the war, Mr. Kegel was hired as the agricultural extension agent for Powder River and Custer counties and was the County Agent for Custer County for 30 years. Mr. Kegel was active in the Miles City community by serving on many civic committees.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughter, Arlene Corbin and her husband, Dennis of Miles City; four grandchildren: Damian Jenkins and her husband, Shawn of Agoura, Calif.; Casey Corbin of Calabasas, Calif.; Ashlie Sarah Corbin of Spokane, Wash.; and Currie Corbin of Ithaca, N.Y.; his brothers: Kenneth Kegel of Turner, Wes Kegel of Earth, Minn.; Marvin Kegel of North Platte, Neb.; sisters: Ethel Cowell of Harlem and Agnes Erickson and Alice Tollefson of Saco. Mr. Kegel was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda, and a son, Charles.

Visitation and viewing Friday from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Miles City. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd Louis Lilienthal
JORDAN - Floyd Louis Lilienthal, age 80, of Jordan passed away Monday, Oct. 26, at the Garfield County Health Center in Jordan.
Floyd was born on Oct. 13, 1918, at the homestead east of Angela, the son of Henry and Anna (Ponsor) Lilienthal. Floyd married Sylvia Pluhar on Aug. 15, 1942, in Miles City.

They resided in Miles City until moving to Cohagen in 1946. Floyd worked for Sylvia's dad until 1952, then went to work for the Garfield County road crew until his retirement in 1978. Floyd moved his family to Jordan in 1960.

Floyd was a school board trustee for many years in Cohagen and Jordan. He belonged to the Jordan Community Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed people, dancing, playing cards, music and his family. He always had a good sense of humor. With the help of his sons, he wired many houses in the county when electricity first came in. He loved to mechanic and carpenter.

Floyd is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sylvia Lilienthal of Jordan; his seven children: Clarence Lilienthal and his wife, Donna of Eden Prairie, Minn.; Adonna Toshoff and her husband, Jim of Harlowton; Lyle Lilienthal and his wife, Idella of Malta; Janice Nelson and her husband, David of Dickinson, N.D.; Keith Lilienthal and his wife, Roxie of Toston; Wayne Lilienthal of Billings; Irene Trogden and her husband, James of Miles City; two sisters: Alma Handley of Billings; and Hattie Burns of Sacramento, Calif.; 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Ted.

A prayer service will be held Thursday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Jordan. Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the VFW Hall in Jordan with Rev. Helen Young officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Pioneer cemetery with a luncheon to follow. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Jordan is in charge of the arrangements.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Community Presbyterian Church, Garfield County Health Center, or the charity of one's choice.

Joseph K. 'Kenny' Dobson
APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. - Joseph K. "Kenny" Dobson, 91, born in Bloomfield, Neb., Aug. 8, 1907, passed away Oct. 22, 1998, in Phoenix. He had been a resident of Mesa and Apache Junction the past 30 years.
While living in Glendive and Billings, Mont., he was a truck and bus driver for N.P. Railroad. He was a World War II Navy Veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Alice (Pilgrim) Dobson, Apache Junction; two sisters, Joyce Mittler and Myrtle Kurtenbach; and a brother, Donald.

Memorials may be made to: Vista Care, 9155 N. Third St., Phoenix, Ariz. 85020.

Apache Junction Mortuary handled the arrangements.

James Bear Below
LODGE GRASS - James Bear Below, 66, of Lodge Grass, died early Wednesday morning, Oct. 28, 1998.
He was born Dec. 1, 1931, to Benjamin and Alberta Bloodman Bear Below in Crow Agency and raised in Lodge Grass.

He was active in Peyote meetings, hand games and an avid basketball fan. He is a member of the Big Lodge and child of Greasy Mouth Clan.

As a teenager he worked for various ranches in the area. He worked for the Guild Arts and Crafts, the Lodge Grass Head Start as a bus driver and custodian for 23 years, retiring in 1996.

James married Gladys Ann Little Nest on Aug. 13, 1953, in Lodge Grass. The couple were married for 45 years.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Bear Below; two sisters, Katie Real Bird and Gretchen Stewart; two daughters, Sharolyn Brown and Jeanette Walks.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys of Lodge Grass; two sons, Benjamin (Teatta) Bear Below of Lodge Grass and Francis (Roberta) Little Nest of Kinnear, Wyo.; one grandson, raised as a son, Thomas Walks of Lodge Grass; two adopted granddaughters, Jarika and Jayshell Bear Below of the family home; three adopted sons, Clinton Walks, Gary Big Man and Benito Brown of Crow Agency; two adopted daughters, Martha Blaine of Lodge Grass and Marcelline Pretty On Top of Reno Creek; one brother, Dave Bravo of Crow Agency; one adopted brother, Joe Morrison of Lame Deer; one sister, Mary Ann Bear Below of Lodge Grass; one adopted sister, Genevieve Smells of Lodge Grass; 27 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren whom he had great love for. He especially loved his great-grandson, Cresencio James (C.J.) Walks.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday in the Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Lodge Grass cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Thelma G. Stephens
Thelma Grace Stephens, 88, of Billings, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, in Billings. Thelma was born in Macon County, Mo., on Aug. 9, 1910. She was the daughter of Laura (Sackett) and Michael Archer.
When Thelma was a little girl, her family moved to Billings. She received her education in the Billings public schools. At the age of 17, Thelma married Mark Stephens in Columbus. Together Thelma and Mark owned and operated a grocery store in Billings. Their marriage was in its 61st year when Mark died in 1988.

Thelma loved working with her hands and enjoyed doing crafts. Whenever the opportunity was presented to her she traveled and loved every minute of it.

Survivors include her daughter, DiAnne D. Emmons, Great Falls; daughter-in-law, Marjorie Stephens, Billings; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A Memorial service will be 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings. Interment of ashes at Mountview cemetery.

Irene N. Smelcer
Irene N. Smelcer has gone home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998. She was born on April 7, 1920, in Ollie, the eldest daughter of Norman and Bertha Rost.
She was raised in the Ollie area and was educated at Ollie school. She lived in the Baker area where she started her family. She moved to Red Lodge in 1962. She co-owned and operated the City Bakery and owned and managed Irene's Wig Salon. In 1969, she moved to Billings where she owned and managed The Chic House of Beauty.

Irene was so proud of her family. She was a loving mother of seven children. Her family was the most important part of her life. She was the most caring and generous mother, sister, grandmother and wife. She would do anything for her family. She loved to travel with her husband and visit family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Larry Ferrel; husband, Ralph Hoffman; and brother, Tubby Rost. She is survived by her husband, Cliff Smelcer of Billings; her daughters, Myrna Obert of Lead, S.D., Cheri Zeibart of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Kim Singer of Baker, and Darla Sherman of Billings; sons, Dave Ferrel of Baker and Shane McDonnell of Red Lodge; a brother, Mervin Rost of Baker; sisters, Reva Schye of Miles City, Rosie Norman of Livingston, and Alice Bandy of Bozeman; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mom you are loved so much and will be greatly missed. There will be such a void in our lives. Your memory will live in our hearts forever.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, Alderson Chapel with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Gladys S. Sund
Mom and Gramma
11-9-25 - 10-28-98
In memory of a fine Mom and Gramma - A heart of gold which knows no bounds, A personal friend to all neighbors and visitors and friends.
She was preceded in passing by her loving husband Walter in June of 1977 and in a later passing by a loving granddaughter Sandra Rae in February of 1993.

A Mom and Gramma - who has passed through this life to another place of better - leaves a son Raymond and wife Edna of Park City, granddaughter Boni Sund and Joe Garcia and great-granddaughter Kristina Rae; and grandson James (Terry) Sund and great-grandchildren Chantel, Skyler, and Allen of Ogden, UT.

Cremation has taken place at Cremation or Funeral Gallery and private interment of ashes will be held Monday at Custer National Monument.

Hazel Roessner
ROUNDUP - Hazel Roessner, 90, born Aug. 22, 1908, in Crawford, Neb., passed away on Oct. 25, 1998.
She has been a resident of the Roundup Nursing Home for the past nine years.

She is survived by a son, Leonard Roessner, who lives in Paradox, Colo.; a daughter, Adele, who lives south of Roundup, and a sister, Elsie Cargo, living in California. She had 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother, husbands, Carl Roessner and Fletcher Collins.

Hazel and Carl lived at Cushman for 30 years before retiring to Bozeman. They always had a large garden and bees so they supplied much of the area with produce and honey. They loved to dance and play cards so always had many visitors. Hazel will be remembered for her wonderful cooking and hospitality. She and Carl were never lonely. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, with funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at the Wier Funeral Home Chapel. She will be joining Carl in the Memorial Gardens between Bozeman and Belgrade in the family burial plot.

Wier Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Harry Sawatzky
Harry Sawatzky died peacefully at home of cancer Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998. He was born Nov. 6, 1911, at home in Herbert, Sask., the third of 10 children born to Rev. Jacob Sawatzky and Cornelia Klassen Sawatzky.
He grew up in Manitoba and the Herbert area among numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He graduated from Herbert High School in 1929 and then in June of that year moved to Bloomfield where his father was pastoring the Bethlehem Mennonite Church. In April 1935 he became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

He married Delphia Schoenwald of Richey, May 15, 1938, at Bethlehem Mennonite Church. In 1940 he received a rarely issued Montana Elementary Life Certificate which allowed him to teach grades 1-10 until the age of 70. He received his B.S. in education from Dickinson State Teachers College in 1968. Harry taught school for 28 years, teaching in several one-room country schools in Dawson County as well as two years in Richey and seven years in Savage.

He also farmed, and his community involvement included serving on elevator and co-op boards and being 4-H leader. He was very skilled in working with his hands. In 1970 he and Delphia moved to Billings where he became principal of Yellowstone Boys Ranch School until he retired in 1975.

During his lifetime the church was the center of his life. He assumed nearly all aspects of church leadership including choir director, songleader, Sunday School teacher and church board member, to name a few. His family meant a great deal to him, and he especially enjoyed thinking of special projects for his grandchildren. He enjoyed a good visit and had a great sense of humor.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leonard and Jack; one sister, Tillie; and an infant daughter. He is survived by his wife of 60 years; son, Ronald (LaVonne) of Elkhart, Ind.; three daughters, Charlene (Dick) Buettner of Lincoln, Neb., Janice (Loren) Soft and Norma (Tom) Eddy, both of Billings. He is also survived by grandchildren, Barb (Mike) Parsons, Sonya (Randy) Tangen, Aaron and Daniel Buettner, Stephen, Shawn and Stephanie Eddy; great-grandchildren, Nick, Nathan and Neil Parsons; as well as sisters, Annie Deckert and Kate Schultz, brothers, Victor, Ben, Reynold and Gordon.

Dad made a banner for the 50th anniversary of Bethlehem Mennonite Church that said "I press on toward the mark of the high calling of God" - Phil. 3:14. That truly was his goal.

Funeral services will be at First Alliance Church on Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at 10 a.m. and at Bethlehem Mennonite Church on Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at 1 p.m. with interment to follow in the Bethlehem Mennonite Church cemetery, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 20024, Billings, MT 59104 or Back to the Bible Broadcast, P.O. Box 82808, Lincoln, NE 68501. Cremation or Funeral Gallery is in charge of arrangements.
