Archie Leo Powers
COLUMBUS - Archie Leo Powers, 76, of Columbus, formerly of Yakima, Wash., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, at his home of cancer.
He was born Jan. 26, 1922, at West Plains, Mo., a son of Charles and Lou Lou Powers. He was raised in Missouri. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II until he was wounded at Pearl Harbor. He returned to Missouri then ventured to California to start his many years as a truck driver.

He met and married Della Zirtzman on one of his many driving trips through Manchester, Iowa. They were married Dec. 6, 1952, at Delaware, Iowa. They lived in Iowa until 1969, at which time they moved to Billings. In 1976 they moved to Washington state until Archie's retirement in 1991, at which time they moved to Columbus to be closer to their family.

Archie is survived by his loving wife, Della and their two daughters, Barbara (John) Jones of Columbus and Veronica (Pete) Romine of Sarpy; six grandchildren: Shawn and Joshua Jones, Cara Pillion, Jess and Cody Morse and Lyn Romine; and four great-grandchildren; Archie also has two older children, Jerry Powers and Dorothy Varney of California.

Archie was preceded in death by his parents and all eight of his brothers and sisters.

We love you dad and grandpa and your love and spirit will be with us always.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Columbus.

Cremation will follow services.

Memorials are suggested to: Stillwater Big Sky Hospice or The Evangelical Church of Columbus.

Harriet M. Dowell
Harriet M. Dowell, 74, of Billings, passed away of natural causes, Sept. 29, 1998.
Born Harriet Landsem in Fort Abercrombie, N.D., on Sept. 18, 1924, she was the daughter of Martin and Inga Landsem. Harriet married Lester H. Dowell in Moorhead, Minn., June 21, 1948.

She is survived by two sons, Roger and his wife, Kellie of Billings and Richard of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Dianne Beedle and her husband, Gary of Aurora, Colo., and Rosemary Cole and her husband, Robert of Colstrip; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Julian Landsem of Minnesota, Orvin Landsem of North Dakota, and Herman Landsem of California; a sister, Gloria Akvik of North Dakota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Lester.

Visitation will begin 9 a.m. Friday. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, Alderson Chapel, with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation or the VFW.

Harriet M. Dowell
Harriet M. Dowell, 74 of Billings, passed away of natural causes, Sept. 28, 1998.
Born Harriet Landsem in Fort Abercrombie, N.D., on Sept. 18, 1924, she was the daughter of Martin and Inga Landsem. Harriet married Lester H. Dowell in Moorhead, Minn., June 21, 1948.

Alban Roemer
YAKIMA, Wash. - Our Grandpa, Alban Roemer, 100, of Yakima, died very quickly and very peacefully of pneumonia surrounded by his loving family. He has been reunited with his wife, Katie, and his son, Joe, and we are very comforted to know he is with them again.
Alban Roemer is the son of Joseph and Mathilda (Freund) Roemer and was born on Dec. 5, 1897, in Appleton, Wis. He graduated from grade school in Appleton and worked at various jobs until he joined the Navy in 1917. He served on the USS Leviathan from March 1918 until his discharge from the Navy in November 1919.

Alban then attended Appleton High School and later enrolled at the University of Montana in Missoula. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in forestry in 1927. He went on to earn a master's degree of forestry at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1931.

Alban married Katherine Kennedy in Cleveland, Ohio, on Dec. 26, 1931. Their son, Joseph, was born Jan. 10, 1933. They made their first home in Kenton, Mich., where he was employed on the Ottawa National Forest. He served in various capacities with the U.S. Forest Service until 1958. He retired from the Forest Service while living in Big Timber, Mont. He continued the practice of forestry as a consulting forester for a few more years.

In October 1996, Alban moved from Big Timber to Yakima to be closer to his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine, in November 1964, and his only child, Joseph, in August 1997.

Alban is survived by his daughter-in-law, Phyllis Roemer; three granddaughters, Cari Roth of Marysville, Kristi Wallawine and Katie Buckholt, both of Yakima; and grandsons-in-law, Marvin Wallawine and Joe Buckholt; seven great-grandchildren, Sean, Caitlin and Erin Roth, Nikki and Amy Wallawine, and Joey and Michaela Buckholt; and a very special niece, Colleen Garvey of Appleton.

Our grandfather has given us a special view of history through his own eyes as he lived and experienced the many great happenings in the world since 1897. He leaves with his family a legacy of hard work, kindness, knowledge and respect for all living things. His special gift is his love of the outdoors that was first passed to his son, Joseph, and then to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at Lowry Funeral Home in Big Timber. Concluding services and burial will follow at Mountain View cemetery in Big Timber.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assn.

Cindy White Cameron
WHITEFISH - Cindy White Cameron died in a tragic vehicle accident near Clearwater Junction on Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998. She was 38.
She was born April 28, 1960, in Butte. She attended grade school in Butte and Miles City and graduated from Custer County High School in Miles City in 1978. She graduated from St. Benedict College in St. Joseph, Minn., in 1981. She earned a degree in elementary education.

She worked as a ski instructor at the Big Mountain and Big Sky resorts, as a Glacier National Park trail crew worker from 1986-1991, and had taught at Ruder Elementary School in Columbia Falls from 1991 until the time of her death.

She moved to Whitefish in 1983. She married Chuck Cameron of Whitefish on Aug. 20, 1994. They have a son, Daniel, who is 22-months-old.

She is survived by her husband and son; her parents, Myles and Regina White of Miles City; brothers, Charles of Great Falls, Jim of Eugene, Ore., Mark of Helena; sisters, Mary Karen Marek of Billings, Joyce Tierney of Eugene, Ore.; two nieces, Nicole Marek and Lisa Tierney; four nephews, Rob and Matt Tierney and Aaron and Jon White; her brother-in-law, Bob Cameron and her mother-in-law, Anne Cameron, both of Mason City, Iowa; and many, many friends.

A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church. A celebration of her life will follow.

Arthur Dotson
CASCADE - Arthur Dotson, 53, of Cascade, a Navy veteran and railroad engineer, died of a gunshot wound Saturday in Cascade.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Croxford & Sons Funeral Home. Additional memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Peoples Congregational Church in Sidney.

Dotson was born June 12, 1945, in Sidney. He graduated from Sidney High School in 1963 and then joined the Navy. After his discharge, he worked in the Great Falls area.

In 1968, he married Nancy Stiner in Great Falls; they divorced in 1988.

He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for a number of years as a brakeman and an engineer. He then went to work for Amtrak as an engineer.

In 1991, he married Ann Nelson in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; they also divorced.

He enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, boating, hunting, traveling and collecting coins. He also enjoyed carpentry and building custom houses.

Survivors include two daughters, Heather Moes and Tina Sonju of Rudyard; a son, Ryan Chase Dotson of Redmond, Wash.; his parents, "Buster" and Geraldine Dotson of Sidney; three sisters, Sandy Hartwell and Pam Dotson of Sidney and Cheryl McEnulty of Portland, Ore.; two brothers, Ed Dotson of Rapid City, S.D., and Terry Dotson of Port Angeles, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Dotson's death is under investigation by the Cascade County Sheriff's Department.

Marguerite 'Marg' Elaine McPhail
Marguerite (Marg) McPhail, of Billings, died Sept. 28, 1998, at St. Vincent Hospital. She was 62. Born the daughter of Pauline (Salono) and John Gillen at the family home in Red Lodge on May 5, 1936, Marg was one of two surviving triplets with a birth weight of only 21/2 pounds.
Marg was raised and received her education in Red Lodge, graduating as Salutatorian in 1954. She then went on to the Sisters of Charity Nursing School at Carroll College, graduating from there in 1957. Following her graduation from college, Marg worked at the hospital in Powell, Wyo. This is where she met her future husband, Mac. She and Malcolm L. "Mac" McPhail were united in marriage on June 11, 1960, in Red Lodge. After their marriage, they moved to Sidney where Marg was employed at Sidney Memorial Hospital. They then moved to Billings in 1971, with Marg working in the Emergency Room of St. Vincent Hospital. She was also one of St. Vincent's first flight nurses.

Marg loved music, especially Dixieland jazz, and enjoyed going to jazz festivals, dancing, and Broadway musicals. She also loved to read, play cards and enjoyed working in her flower garden. She especially enjoyed time spent with her four granddaughters. Marg devoted her life to caring for others. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Mac; four daughters: Laurie Peterson and husband, Steve of Pocatello, Idaho, and children, Kelsey and Anne; Maureen Culbertson and husband, David of Absarokee, and children, Megan and Colleen; Cindy Hampton and husband, Terry of Billings; and Heather McPhail of Billings; mother, Pauline Gillen, Billings; twin sister, Kathie Abbey, Billings; uncles, John Kastelitz and Elmer Kloster, Red Lodge; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Marg was preceded in death by her infant sister, Pauline, and her father, Jack, in 1990.

A vigil service will be held 7 p.m. Thursday at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday at St. Agnes Church in Red Lodge with interment in the Red Lodge cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Vincent Foundation, Box 35200, Billings 59107-5200, or charity of one's choice.

Armand G. Fontaine
MISSOULA - Armand G. Fontaine, 90, of Missoula, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the Riverside Health Care Center. He was born on July 24, 1908, in Fairview, to Arthur and Leda Fontaine.
He came to Milltown in 1929 and worked for the Anaconda Company in Bonner.

During WWII he moved to Vancouver, Wash., and worked in the Kaiser Shipyards. While working there he met Lola Green and the couple married on Jan. 29, 1945.

On July 18, 1946, their son, Stanley, was born and the family moved to Pinegrove in September of that year.

Armand worked at the Intermountain Lumber Co. for a time before starting Fontaine's Machine Shop. Armand was one of the very best machinists around. It was easily his hobby as well as his work. Another of his hobbies was visiting with everyone. No one was ever a stranger.

He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Bernice Fontaine and Florence Archibald, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son, and four brothers, Roland, Edmund, Richie and Alphonse.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Malletta Family of Funeral Homes Livingston Chapel, 224 W. Spruce.

Edna Pauline McCormick
CASPER, Wyo. - There are no services set at this time for Mrs. McCormick, 86.
Mrs. McCormick died at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Sept. 27, 1998. She was born June 21, 1912, in Emblem, the daughter of Gottlieb and Katherine (Reitz) Marcus. Growing up in Emblem, she lived in the Big Horn Basin area and worked on a farm for many years.

She loved to read, traveling, gardening and plants, and she was a true Bronco fan. She loved her family very much and they were the most important part of her life. She was a member of the Does club and the Rebekah Lodge in Greybull.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna and La Rena Collingwood, both of Greybull; two sons, Bill Miller of Billings, and Bob Miller of Casper; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Bustard's Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
