Richard John Novasio
Richard John Novasio, 80 of Billings, passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 8, 1998, at St. John's Lutheran Home. He was born Dec. 4, 1917 in Bill-ings, the son of John and Viola (Alexander) Novasio.
Dick was the fifth son in a family of twelve children and spent much of his youth working at the Stew-art Ranch. He also spent extensive time at the Hamburger Shop owned by his brother Tony. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Saratoga.
On Jan. 1, 1938, he married his wife of nearly 50 years, Doris Mae Evans at Glendive. They lived in Billings until 1948 and were stationed out of San Francisco during the war. He and his family then moved to Darwin, Calif., in the Death Valley, where Dick was one of the top hard rock miners in the Anaconda Mining Company.
In 1961, the family returned to the Billings area, where Dick ran several successful businesses specializing mainly in food service. These businesses included the Powell Country Club, Red Lodge Mountain Cafe, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Ritchel Lodge, the Rockvale Supper Club, and the Chuckwagon Cafe. A severe stroke in 1972 forced Dick into early retirement. However, this freed him up to spend more time with his extensive family, especially his grandchildren, which were so important to him. He was preceded in death by his wife Doris, twin brothers Floyd and Lloyd, his sister Marie, and five half brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his brother Bert Novasio and sisters, Barbara Clark and Harriett Janich; he was the proud father of his three surviving children, his daughter Dixie Shade and his two sons, Scott and Gregg Novasio. His legacy is best seen in his nine grandchildren and two great-grandsons, who also survive him.
This hard working family man summed it up best when he was often heard saying that he would never trade the life that he lived for anything. He will always be remembered as "mean-n-rough and dirty-n-tough."
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel. Interment with military honors will follow in Mountview cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital, 911 W. 5th, Spokane, Wash., 99204.
