Donald Harley Peter
Don Peter was a longtime resident of Billings as a sign painter and an entertainer. He passed away Friday evening, Oct. 9, 1998, at St. John's Lutheran Home in Billings at the age of 90. The eldest of six children born to Harley Hood and Mildred Griffith Peter, he was born April 27, 1908, in Seattle.
His family moved to Ken-newick, Wash., where he grew up on the family farm. His interest in art started very young and he drew many cartoons for his high school and college yearbooks. He attended college in Walla Walla, Wash. and later attended art school in Los Angeles.
Don lived in Seattle, Billings, Butte, Forest Grove, Ore., Boise, Idaho, and back to Billings in 1951. He worked for sign companies in Billings and Cody, Wyo., as well as his own sign shop. He was a longtime entertainer for banquets and clubs in the area and toured for the National School Assemblies, mainly in Georgia and Tennessee, performing his "Wizard of Art" programs over 400 times.
Don was a charter member of the Billings Magic Society, and belonged to the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Billings Camera Club. He was a long time member of First Congregational Church, volunteering many hours on the "Congregationalist" with his artwork and title headings. The last 15 years he was a member of Mayflower Congregational Church. He was married three times to Lura Lampson, Judy James, and Alice Hamilton. He was preceded in death by his three wives and all five of his siblings.
Survivors include his four children, Harley of Dallas, Darrell of San Diego, Della Hopple of the Philippines, and Ellen Barnum of Billings; his two step-children, Barbara James of Dallas and Doug James of Bothell, Wash.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His love of music and family will be missed.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Mayflower Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. John's Lutheran Home, 3940 Rimrock Rd., Billings, Mont., 59102. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

John William Singer
(Aug. 30, 1914 - Oct. 6, 1998)
John Singer was born on Aug. 30, 1914, in Steeleville, Mo. He was raised in that area and with his brothers and father owned and operated flour mills, including the mill in Aldrich, Mo.
In 1942, John married Dimple Stroud Hodge in Little Rock, Ark. In 1943, he joined the Army and was stationed on Guadalcanal during the last years of the Second World War, where he obtained the grade of Technical Sergeant.
In 1945, John returned to civilian life and continued to pursue his career as a flour miller in the West and Mid-West, including Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah, where his expertise as a millwright was much in demand. He was for many years an active member of the Association of Operative Millers and served in various national offices of the organization.
In 1990, at the age of 77, John retired from the Gilt Edge Mill in Richmond, Utah, and returned to Aldrich, Mo., where he resided until 1997 when he moved to Billings.
John loved the outdoors and in his active years enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family. In more recent years, he spent his time reading, playing checkers on his computer, and was an avid golf and Denver Broncos fan. He enjoyed photography and loved a good argument. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved the time he was able to spend with them.
John was preceded in death by his wife Dimple in 1971 and his son Tom in 1988.
He is survived by his children: John Hodge and wife Pat of Melba, Idaho; Jim and wife Lurline of Mozambique Africa; Janet of Billings; his daughter-in-law Gloria of Spokane; his brothers: Harry of Kansas City, Mo., and David of Deland, Florida; and his six grandchildren (Lance, Bret, Bruce, Sherry, Cody and Kristina) and two great grandchildren (Lias and Taigon).
Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Terrace Gardens cemetery, 304 33rd St. W. Flowers may be sent to Smith's Funeral Home or contributions may be made toward a memorial at Saint Vincent Foundation, P.O. Box 35200, Billings, Montana, 59107.

Glenn C. Thorpe
GREAT FALLS - Glenn C. Thorpe, 73, of Great Falls, formerly of Billings, passed away Saturday morning, Oct. 10, 1998, at his home. He was born in Billings on Feb. 13, 1925.
Glenn was raised and educated in Billings and graduated from Billings Senior High School. In 1943, he married Elaine Droste. They later divorced. Glenn served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943 to 1946.
In 1980, he married Janice Oblander in Billings. He was a partner in Thorpe Brothers Construction and later Master Builders Supply and retired in 1983. Glenn and Janice lived in Portland, Ore., from 1985 to 1994. They later moved to Great Falls, where they had resided since. Glenn was an excellent craftsman who enjoyed woodworking, camping, fishing, reading and spending time with his family. He was president of the Montana Home Builders Association in the 1970s and a member of the Elks Lodge in Billings.
Survivors include his wife Janice of Great Falls; his daughter Wanda Thorpe and her husband Warren Winter of Spokane, Wash.; his son Terry G. Thorpe of Whitefish; his step-daughters, Sue Jackson of Portland, Ore., and Donetta Oblander of Sidney, Mont.; his step-son Gregory Oblander and his wife Joanna of Great Falls; his sister Frances Raw of Garneill, Mont.; two grandchildren, Lynette Thorpe of Belgrade, Mont., and Rachel Thorpe of Whitefish, Mont.; seven step-grandchildren, Ronald Zwickel of Dayton, Ohio, Janine Heggen of Townsend, Mont., Justin Sherman of Billings and Melissa, Chad, Ryan and Nicole Oblander, all of Great Falls; and two great-grandchildren Janalee Huffman and Deriek Heggen of Townsend, Mont. He was preceded in death by his step-daughter, Janalee Babcock.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel. Interment with military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Charlotte 'Chal' Slough Akerstrom
Charlotte "Chal" Slough Akerstrom, age 86, of Billings, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at Western Manor Health Care Center.
She was born Jan. 19, 1912, at Moorcroft, Wyo., the daughter of Frank and Cora (Adams) Kezer.
She married Charlie Slough on Jan. 25, 1932. He died July 1, 1957. In October 1960 she married Robert R. Akerstrom. He died Dec. 25, 1982.
Chal will be remembered for her kind heart, gentle nature, and her positive outlook. She was always willing to help others. She was nurturing to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as all of God's other creatures. Chal enjoyed doll making, painting, gardening, fishing and ceramics. She was proud of the Interview Dolls she made for Yellowstone County. She donated her endless love and precious time as a foster grandparent.
Chal is survived by three sons, David Robert and wife, Nancy Slough of Billings, James Slough of Buffalo, Wyo., and Jack and wife, Shirley Kostelic of Idaho Falls, Idaho; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ilo Nina Replogle and Mable Sherwood; and a brother, Dwight Kezer.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at Smith's Downtown Chapel. Memorials may be made to Mayfair.

Alma Hargrove
CLYDE PARK - Alma Hargrove, 88, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at the Shields Valley United Methodist Church with graveside committal and interment in the Clyde Park cemetery. Franzen-Davis Funeral Home of Livingston is in charge.

Victoria Jakanoski
GLASGOW - Victoria Jakanoski, 89, died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at the Valley View Nursing Home of natural causes.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the church with interment in Highland cemetery. Bell Mortuary is in charge.

Dean King
BUFFALO, Wyo. - Dean King, 64, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at his home.
Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

William A. Kirkpatrick
BUFFALO, Wyo. - William A. Kirkpatrick, 88, died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at the Amie Holt Nursing Home.
Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Genevieve 'Gene' Martin
THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. - Genevieve "Gene" E. Martin, 83, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at the Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at Mortimore Funeral Home with interment in Monument Hill cemetery.

Edna May Rice
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Edna May Rice, 94, died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at Westview Health Care Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at the First Christian Church with interment in the Elks cemetery. Ferries Funeral Home is in charge.

Edith H. Richards
POPLAR - Edith H. Richards of Poplar died Oct. 8 at the Poplar Nursing Home. She lived by her motto, "If you can't say anything good about someone, then don't say anything at all."
Edith was born April 9, 1909, in Cuba, Ill., the daughter of John and Grace Williams. Her mother died when Edith was very young. The family moved to south Poplar to homestead in 1913.
Edith married Roy Richards on April 13, 1928, in Plentywood. Her husband's long successful radio and electric business would not have been realized without her. In May of 1936, Roy was among the top sellers of Philco radios and won an all expense paid trip to Havana, Cuba. This was possible because of Edith's adept sales ability.
Edith was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was a ruling elder and a Sunday school teacher for years. She was an avid hiker and on her 80th birthday, Edith walked with six younger friends three miles through snow squalls to her homestead south of Poplar.
Edith is survived by two daughters, Pat Beck of Poplar and Gail Alex of Havre; three grandchildren, Royal Houg of north Wolf Point, Kris Treasure of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Rick Beck of Missoula; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitations will be held on Sunday, Oct. 11, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Clayton Memorial Chapel in Poplar. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 12, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Curtis Reese officiating. Interment will be in the Poplar City cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Poplar Nursing Home, The First Presbyterian Church or the Poplar cemetery fund.

Ugo P. Scala
Ugo P. Scala, 89, of Billings, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at Aspen Meadows.
The son of Peter and Madelina Scala, Ugo was born Nov. 20, 1908, in Red Lodge, where he was raised and educated. He married Hazel Warner on Feb. 10, 1934. They made their home in Billings.
Ugo worked for George R. Pierce before starting with Northwest Fixture. He retired as president of Northwest Fixture in 1985.
He was a 50-year member of the Scottish Rite and was a member of Billings Lodge #113 of the Masons. He enjoyed fishing and oil painting.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel of Billings; his son, Philip Scala and Jennifer Scala of Billings; and three grandchildren, Brandon Scala and his wife, Cori of Billings, Bryce Scala and his wife, Nichole of Bozeman, and Brett Scala of Billings.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ulda Slaby.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist, Alderson Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Eugene 'Bud' Alder
COLSTRIP - Eugene Alder, known as "Bud" to family and friends, passed away Saturday, Oct. 3, at St. Vincent Hospital after a short valiant fight with cancer.
Bud, the youngest son of Alton and Mabel Alder, was born on Dec. 10, 1937, at Hawley, Minn.
On Oct. 26, 1957, Bud married Sharon Nicholas at Ada, Minn. They spent their early years working road construction on Interstate 94 across North Dakota and into Montana. They moved to Colstrip in 1971 where Bud worked for Long Construction and Western Energy for over 26 years.
Bud was a very avid hunter and loved going out in the hills and driving around looking at the countryside, as he said it changed every time you saw it.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald. He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Colstrip; three sons: Ronald Alder and his wife, Velvet of Colstrip; Scott Alder and his wife, PJ of Battle Creek, Mich.; and Wayne Alder and his wife, Wendi of Battle Creek, Mich.; a daughter, Patsy Lackey and her husband, Doug of Colstrip; four grandsons, four granddaughters; three brothers: Willis Alder of Audubon, Minn.; Clarence Alder and his wife, Daisy of Callaway, Minn.; and Clifford Alder and his wife, Donna of Audubon, Minn.; four sisters: Rosileen Gillias of Millington, Md.; Darlene Maulsley and her husband, Stan of Tomah, Wis.; Ruby Burchard and her husband, Henry of Rising Town, Ga., and Lorraine Ueeck and her husband, Kurt of Delta Junction, Ark.
Family will receive friends at the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth on Tuesday, Oct. 6, during visitation from 1-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Colstrip. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in the Colstrip cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Forsyth is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung and Cancer Society.

Grace M. Birch
MUSCATINE, Iowa - Grace M. Birch, 92, formerly of Glendive, Mont., died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at the Muscatine General Hospital.
Services will be held at a later date in Glendive. The Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home was in charge.

Berniece Lucille Cunningham
HAMILTON - Berniece Lucille Cunningham, 74, formerly of Miles City, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at her daughter's home in Miles City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, in the First Presbyterian Church with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery, both in Helena. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge.

Gudrun G. Daggett
GLASGOW - Gudrun G. Daggett, 82, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at the Valley View Home of natural causes.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Bell Mortuary Chapel. Additional services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the American Lutheran Church in Harlowton.
