William P. Roscoe, Jr.
William P. Roscoe, Jr., 82, of Billings, died Friday evening, Oct. 2, 1998, at Aspen Meadows after a lengthy illness.
He was born on July 21, 1916, in Billings, Mont., the son of William P. Roscoe, Sr. and Florence Nenno Roscoe. His father was an early-day highway bridge contractor in Montana and surrounding states.
He attended Billings schools and Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. He graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., with a degree in business While in college he attained a flight instructor rating and went on to become a civilian flight instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He was stationed in Cimarron Field in Yukon, Okla.
On May 23, 1942, he married Emily Jane Covert in Yukon, Okla. During and after the war, they resided in Lima, Peru, where he was a pilot for a new airline, Pan-American-Grace Airways (Panagra). During these years he flew the Cordillera of the Andes and most of the South American continent.
In 1947 he returned to Billings and worked with his father in bridge construction. He also worked for Montana Steel and Supply and Eaton Metal Products Manufacturing. In 1954 he and his partners founded Roscoe Steel and Culvert Company. He was active in the business until his retirement in 1986.
He was very involved in his industry and his community. He was a member of the Associated General Contractors of Montana and also served as President of the National Corrugated Steel Pipe Association. He served for several years on the Board of Directors of Deaconess Medical Center. He was a Past-President of Yellowstone Valley District of Boy Scouts and a recipient of the Silver Beaver Service Award. He belonged to Billings Rotary and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award. He served several terms on the Board of Trustees of Carroll College in Helena; was a founder and Emeritus Trustee of the Billings Area Catholic Education Trust (B.A.C.E.T.); belonged to the Highlands Club; B.P.O.E. #394 and the Service Corps of Retired Executives (S.C.O.R.E).
In 1983 he was chosen "Small Businessman of the Year" for the state of Montana and traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with other state representatives and President Reagan. In 1985 he was the recipient of the Philip N. Fortin "Philanthropist of the Year" award, presented by Deaconess Medical Center.
His interests were his home, family, his church, young people and their education, and the outdoors. He especially enjoyed his cabin on the Stillwater River where he spent many seasons planting and tending to his trees. After his retirement he and his wife traveled extensively.
He is survived by his wife, Emily and six children. They are James P. Roscoe and his wife Lin of Billings, William P. Roscoe III and his wife Marianne of Sacramento, Calif.; Kathryn (Katie) Stack and her husband Tom of Missoula, Mont.; Teresa (Tris) Salyer and her husband Jim, John J. Roscoe and Michael P. Roscoe, all of Billings. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, two great grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Margeurite and Mary Bernice and one son, Judson Michael.
Visitation will begin 9 a.m. Monday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, Alderson Chapel. The Vigil Service will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 12:00 Noon Wednesday at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral with Rite of Committal at Mountview cemetery.

Forrest Charles Strand
DAVIS, Calif. - Forrest Charles Strand died on Sept. 27, 1998, in Davis, Calif. He was born on Sept. 28, 1913, in Trade Lake, Wis., the son of Oscar and Alma Strand. He married Dorothy Saros on Oct. 20, 1938.
Forrest worked in trucking in Wisconsin before moving to Montana in 1941 to work on road construction for Stanley Arkwright. Later he worked for LaLonde Construction and then for United Industries where he stayed until his retirement in 1979.
Forrest enjoyed fishing and hunting in Montana. He loved working in his garden and restoring a 1936 Chevrolet pickup.
Forrest lived for his family and will be remembered for his devotion to his wife and only son, Robert. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
His mother, father, wife Dorothy, brother Ellsworth and sister Avis preceded him in death. His son, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and one great grandchild survive him.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Oct. 13 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Billings.

Albert John 'Bud' Taylor
ROCK SPRINGS - Albert John "Bud" Taylor, 76, of Rock Springs, died Friday, Oct. 2, at the VA Medical Center Nursing Home in Miles City.
Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Trinity Lutheran Church with burial in the Veterans' Section of Custer County cemetery.

Emil Voss
SIDNEY - Emil Voss, 82, of Sidney, died Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Sidney Health Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lonsdale United Methodist Church with burial in the Sidney cemetery. Fulkerson Funeral Home is in charge.

Ellen J. (Ferguson) Berlinger
KALISPELL - Ellen Josephine (Teeny) Berlinger, 56, formerly of Billings, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, in a car accident at Clearwater Junction, Highway 200.
She was born June 27, 1942, at Great Falls, to Melvin E. and Irene M. Ferguson.
She was raised and educated in Lockwood and graduated from Billings Senior High School. She married Frank Weikal in 1961, then divorced Frank. She moved to the Flathead Valley about 1980 where she graduated from Flathead Community College. She met Charles Berlinger and they were married Feb. 19, 1983.
She served with honors in the Women of the Moose, was senior regent in 1997 and in Helena, at the Moose Convention, Sunday morning, Sept. 20, her mother presented Teeny with her green beanie for Graduate Senior Regent. Teeny worked five years for Windward Place in Kalispell, helping the older people and the handicapped which she loved. Ellen will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her father and husband, and is now survived by three sons: Rick and Roy Weikal and Shane Berlinger, all of Kalispell; mother, Irene Ferguson of Kalispell; sister, Ruth Kohlenberger of Helena; brother, Roy and his wife Betty Ferguson of Billings; four stepchildren and seven grandchildren.
Memorial services were held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Little Brown Church in Bigfork and burial was at Glacier Memorial Gardens in Kalispell. A reception was held at the Moose Lodge in Kalispell. Later in October, there will be a Moose Lodge Memorial Service held in Kalispell.

John Thomas Gibbs
JORDAN - John T. Gibbs, 70, of Jordan, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, in Miles City.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan. Rite of committal will follow in the Pioneer cemetery in Jordan. Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel of Miles City is in charge of arrangements.

Lena Jacobson
Lena Jacobson, 83, passed away Oct. 1, 1998, surrounded by her family at Parkview Convalescent Center. She was born on Jan. 24, 1915, in Billings to John and Magdalena Schutz.
She married Walter Jacobson on Sept. 21, 1938, in Roundup. Together they had five children; John, Dick, Linda, Nancy and Susan. Lena loved life and people. She was a foster grandparent for 15 years and was active in the H.O.S.T.S. (Help One Student To Succeed) program for the past eight years, usually at Orchard School.
Her favorite things in life were her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her friends. She enjoyed shopping at garage sales and the mall. She also enjoyed spending time at the Senior Citizen Center, playing bridge. She enjoyed old movies, reading good books and visiting.
Mom is survived by two sons, John (Linda) Jacobson and Dick (Janice) Jacobson of Billings; two daughters, Linda McRae of Long Beach, Calif., and Nancy (Tim) McCullough of Laurel; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Susan Ricci, grandson Jeff McCullough, and granddaughter, Jodi Jacobson. Mom, you are loved. You have touched so many lives with your kindness and love. We will miss you very much. The many things we have learned from you will stay with us forever.
Smith's Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Visitations will begin at noon on Sunday and continue until service time on Tuesday. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the Smith Downtown Chapel. A reception will follow the service with the location to be announced. Cremation will follow with interment of her ashes in the Laurel cemetery next to her grandson, Jeff McCullough, at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033, Billings, Mont. 59107.

Art M. Morgan
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Art M. Morgan, 91, of Sheridan, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, in Westview Health Care Center.
Viewing will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, at Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct 5, in the Family Life Center. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Lydia Resser
Lydia Resser, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother (G.G.) and friend, peacefully left us on Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, in the presence of her loving family.
Lydia was born Feb. 6, 1910, in Sutley, S.D., to Henry and Catherine Rudolph. She was the first of 10 children.
In her younger years she worked in the Vanada-Forsyth area. In 1933, she married Raymond Hofmeister. They lived in the Bridger-Laurel area. They were blessed with a daughter, Bonnie.
Lydia attended Anderson Beauty College, then worked at Della's Salon. She opened a salon at her own home in order to care for her mother. Over the years she had many loyal customers.
In 1949, she married Clyde (Eddie) Resser, making their home in Billings over 25 years. They enjoyed hunting and fishing with the family.
Lydia was a devoted Lutheran all her life, enjoying the company of her Christian friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde, in 1981 and three brothers and two sisters.
Lydia is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Charlie Allen; granddaughters, Nova Kolander and husband Dan, Misse Iverson and husband Jim and Lori Wenckus and husband Jeff; great-grandchildren Marissa and Aaron Kolander, Ben, Brianne and Katherine Iverson and Kolten Wenckus; four sisters Catherine Gerke and Bertha Vick both of Missoula, Mont., and Emma Hoffmann and Mary Weber both of Seattle, Wash., and numerous nephews and nieces.
A special thanks to Erika, Eddie Bill, Mary Ellen and Wendy for all their loving concerns.
Visitation will be at Smith's Downtown Chapel, 120 N. 26th St., 12 noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. Private graveside service will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A Memorial Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, at the First English Lutheran Church, 1243 N. 31st St.
Memorials may be made to First English Lutheran Church; Big Sky Hospice, Box 1049, Billings, Mont. 59103, or charity of choice.

Hilda Agnes Smith
Hilda was born Feb. 3, 1907 in Luverne, Minn. She was the daughter of Anna Hassler and Anton Koch. Hilda and Paul S. Smith were married on Feb. 16, 1927.
On Oct. 1, with a tear in her eyes, she said her last goodbye to her daughter and passed over to be with her loved ones who preceded her in death. Her husband Paul of 53 years, son and daughter-in-law Raymond and Joan Smith and son Robert. Brothers Peter, Anton, and Freddie, sisters Anna, Lizzie, Agnes, and Mary.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Paula and Hudson Hoyt, brothers Johnny, Joe, Rudy, and Leo, seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Her family homesteaded in Sumatra, Mont., on her 6th birthday in 1913. At the age of 22 she moved to Billings where she met her husband-to-be Paul Smith. They were married three months later.
She loved to cook, garden, and play Pitch. "What's Trump?" We love you and will miss you and your cinnamon rolls!
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard's parish. Interment will be in Terrace Gardens.
Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, Heights Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Virgil Andreasen
DAGMAR - Funeral services for Virgil Andreasen will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2. Pastor Wes Aardahl will officiate at the service at Nathanael Lutheran Church at Dagmar; interment, with military honors, will be in Nathanael cemetery. Virgil, 76, died unexpectedly of cancer Saturday evening, Nov. 28, 1998, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood.
Virgil was born in Medicine Lake Nov. 22, 1922, he son of Aage and Clara (Jensen) Andreasen. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Dagmar, attended Hiawatha grade school and Danish summer school there, and graduated from Antelope High School. He attended a machinist school in Nebraska, then worked for a time in Ohio setting utility poles before he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the south pacific with the 2nd Marines, and after the war served in the occupation of Nagasaki, following the atom bombing of that Japanese city. Virgil married Mary Louise Gardner Feb. 2, 1946, at Yuma, Ariz. They returned to Dagmar, and farmed in partnership with Virgil's parents. Virgil has served on various school and community boards, participated in the Big Muddy Rock and Mineral Club and Toastmasters. He served on the local Council on Aging, the Montana Senior Citizen's Legislature, and the Sheridan County Historical Society: Virgil was deeply concerned with efforts to preserve and recognize our history and diverse cultural heritage. An active member of the Nathanael Lutheran Church, he served on the church council in several capacities. Virgil deeply loved his family, and enjoyed doing things with them, he was a steward of the soil, and loved hunting and fishing, and often left his guns at home to hunt just with a camera and binoculars. He could do almost anything with his hands, whether gardening, woodworking, or making jewelry. He was a careful listener and thought things through before expressing his opinions, often with his wit and sense of humor.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Mary Louise, of Dagmar; four daughters and their families: Clairena and her husband, Frank Smith, of Poplar, Signe and her husband, James Bannister, of Ellensburg, Wash., June and her husband, Chet Walsh, of Dagmar, Rita and her husband, Richard Nygard, also of Poplar. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Theresa (LaVern) Knoble, Virgil (Michelle) Smith, and Mary (Carl) Failing and Suzann Smith, Andrea and Daniel Bannister, Matthew (Tiffany) Walsh, Justin Walsh, and Samantha, Lloyd and Michele Nygard; as well as by six great-grandsons. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Irving, whose wife, Helen, resides at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood; and by an infant daughter, Holly Jean.
Fulkerson Funeral home of Plentywood is in charge of arrangements.

Glenn Lee Clayton, Jr.
FISHTAIL - Glenn Lee Clayton, Jr., 68, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, after having his favorite breakfast of elk steak & pancakes.
He was born March 8, 1930 at Miles City, a son of Mary & Glenn Clayton, Sr. He married Marge Anderson Nov. 15, 1975 at Columbus.
Glenn loved camping, hunting, fishing and the mountains. His favorite pastime was cutting wood and listening to fiddle music.
He was preceded in death by his father & brother Dan.
Survivors include: his wife, mother, brothers: Frank (Karen) of Livingston, Donald (Vicki) and Dave (Karon) of Billings; daughters: Glenda (Don) Hochhalter, Kara (Rick) Evans & Robin (Kent) Larson all of Billings; step-children: Theresa (Al) Portz, Dave (Susan) Anderson, Tanya (Rex) Fowler of Absarokee, Chris (Janice) Sorenson of Fishtail; grandchildren: Randi, Jamey, Scott, and Brian; step-grandchildren: Lacie, Alexia, Erica, Felicia, Cortney, Tyler, Angela, Julie, & David; two great-grandchildren: Ian & Kai.
He will be missed greatly by all his family and friends. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Nye Community Church, in Nye. Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel was in charge of arrangements.

Linda Ingram
LAUREL - Linda Ingram, 48, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at the Evergreen Laurel Health Care Center of complications of diabetes.
She was born in Spokane, Wash., Nov. 20, 1950 a daughter of Marion & Dorthea Ingram. She attended grade school in Auburn, Wash., & Joliet and graduated form Joliet High School in 1968.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1962.
Survivors include her mother, Dorthea Knaub of Laurel; one brother, Ron (Joyce) Ingram of Billings; one sister, Diane Yates of Dickinson N.D.; a niece, Michelle Riggs of Bozeman and numerous aunts, uncles, & cousins, in the Laurel & Billings area.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel. Cremation has taken place & memorials may be sent to: American Diabetes Association, Mt. Affiliate, 2525 6th Ave., Billings, MT 59101-1338.
