Ella Mae Davis Woodley
HARDIN - When Ella Mae Davis Woodley passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, we surrendered to God more than a person we loved. She was a life long resident of Big Horn County and a person whose family and life created a part of our heritage.
For the most part, Ella Mae was preceded in death by her closest family: her husband, Kenneth Woodley; her father, Jefferson (Jack) Davis; her mother, Nellie; and her brother, Clifford. She is survived by three cousins, Dr. William Bennett of Cambridge, Mass., Norma A. McEvans of Sun City, Ariz., and Shirley Jones who resides in Santa Cruz, Calif. She had, however, many friends and children of close friends, whom became her local family, and her kindnesses and generosity shaped so many lives that only those who benefited from her love could truly appreciate her presence.
Ella Mae was born on Feb. 28, 1914, in Upton, Wyo., but arrived only nine months later with her family in the Hardin area. She began the first grade in Hardin and graduated from Hardin High School in 1932.
Being from an old-time ranching family, it was only natural that she found a career in that territory. In the 1930s, shortly out of school, she worked for the Farm Credit Administration, helping drought-stricken farmers with loans and then with the Wheat Allotment Program for Big Horn County. She also gained work experience with the Harv Willcut Ranch, Mr. Mattox, a local attorney, and the Hardin Title Company. In the late '40s she was employed by the Bureau of Reclamation, who at the time was exploring the possibility of creating Yellowtail Dam and in 1948, began working for the Reservation Ranchers, Inc., which represented about 65 area ranches. On July 2, 1955, in Deadwood, S.D., in the same church in which her parents were wed, Ella Mae married Kenneth Woodley.
In 1971, shortly after the death of Kenneth, Ella Mae created her own company, Happy Valley Leasing. For more than 20 years, Happy Valley provided leasing services for area ranchers and Crow Tribal members.
Ella Mae was strong of heart, she always kept good spirits in difficult times and was always a friend under any circumstances. She was like a mother to many of us, a sister to some and ever present to help when needed. She always cried at the loss of a friend, but thoroughly enjoyed life. She savored her travel experiences, and loved her dogs, and it was only in recent times, when her health began to fail that we who knew her best were truly saddened; for it was Ella Mae who enriched our lives in ways far greater than anything we could ever repay. May you rest in peace and in the hands of God forever.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow services in the Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Big Horn County Museum.
