Colo., when she was six months old, and she lived there until she graduated in 1921 from Logan County High School, where she excelled in her studies, in the drama program, and music, especially the piano. She then attended the St. Louis College of Music where she was trained in the Progressive Music Series for elementary school students. She was a traveling teacher for this program and organized school orchestras until she moved to Detroit, Mich., where she worked as a secretary for the General Motors Research Laboratory.
One of her favorite stories from this period of her life was that Charles Kettering, the president of General Motors, once borrowed a dime from her.
On Nov. 26, 1931, Thanksgiving Day, she and Truman N. Smith were married in Detroit, Mich. On the occasion of their 60th anniversary in 1991, they received a Papal Blessing from Pope John Paul II.
Before settling in Detroit in 1942, the Smith family lived in a number of locations, including South Bend, Ind., Chicago, Ill., and Trenton, N.J. They remained in Detroit until 1955, when her husband's career took them to White Plains, N.Y. In 1976, Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved to Irvine, Calif., where they lived until August of 1991 when they came to Billings to live with their daughter.

Smith and his wife, Sue, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Kathleen Gilluly and her husband, Gy Moody, Mary Seana Gilluly and her husband, Kevin Brensdal, and Michael J. Gilluly, all of Billings; Margaret Gilluly Marquez and her husband, Gary, of Cedar Park, Texas; Nathan R. Smith, Murfreesboro, Tenn; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin Marquez, Gene Gilluly-Boyle, and Zachary Jordan; a sister-in-law, Rachel Toohey, in California; a nephew, James Toohey and his wife, Jan, of Idaho; and several cousins.
Since January of 1998, Mrs. Smith had resided at the Valley Health Care Center. Her family would like to thank a very caring staff, especially those on the Rimview wing, for their concern for her well-being and safety, and for their many kindnesses as her life drew to a close.
Special thanks, too, to the Billings Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, and their Associates, Father Martin Fisher and Father Tony Ozimek and the Pastoral Care staff at Saint Vincent Hospital, Fr. John Houlihan and Sister Dolores Helbling of St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral, and all the friends of the family in Billings and elsewhere who have offered their prayers and support over the last few years for Mrs. Smith and her family.
A vigil service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, at Smith's Downtown Funeral Chapel.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 24, at 12 noon in St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral.
Burial of cremains will take place in Sterling, Colo., at a later date.
