Josephine A. Bares
BEACH, N.D. - Josephine A. Bares, 81, of Dickinson formerly of Beach, died Feb. 5, 1999.
Vigil/Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Beach. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at St. Johns The Baptist Catholic Church in Beach. Interment, following lunch, will be at St. Michael's cemetery in Sentinel Butte.

Beulah (Bain) Derr
LEWISTOWN - Beulah (Bain) Derr, 79, of Lewistown died Friday morning at the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center in Lewistown of natural causes She was born July 29, 1919 in Arco, Idaho, the daughter of Oliver B. and Elsie (Wilhite) Bain. She received her education in Worland, Wyo. graduating from Washakie County High School in 1938. In 1937 she was united in marriage to Lyle J. Derr in Worland. They lived in various places in the United States settling in Seattle in the late 1940's. He preceded her in death in 1960. She continued living in Seattle until the mid 1960's when she returned to Worland. In the early 1970's she moved to Lewistown and worked at the Lewistown News Argus and then for BLM retiring in 1985. She continued living in Lewistown entering the nursing home in 1998.
Beulah enjoyed knitting, sewing, quilting, playing cards and she had a great sense of humor, loving to tell jokes.
She is survived by one daughter: Deborah Wolfe in Muncie, Ind.; one sister: Dorothy Ziesman of Lewistown; two brothers; Norman Bain and Ralph Bain both of Ogden, Utah; one granddaughter, Bethany Elise of Muncie, Wyo. and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Funeral services for Beulah (Bain) Derr will be Tuesday 2 2 p.m. in the Cloyd Chapel with interment and graveside services in Riverview Memorial Gardens in Worland, Wyo. on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Cloyd Funeral Home of Lewistown is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may make memorials to the Central Montana Senior Citizens or the charity of their choice and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.

Alf 'John' Eggar
LIVINGSTON - Alf "John" Eggar, 88, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at Livingston Health and Rehab Center following major surgery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 1-5 p.m. both on Monday, Feb. 8, and Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home, 118 North 3rd St., in Livingston. Cremation will follow. A family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Stephen J. Larson
MILES CITY - Stephen J. Larson, 57, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.
Prayer services will be held on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at the Grace Bible Church. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery.

David F. Lee
David F. Lee, our beloved father who will be missed, passed away late Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital, Billings.
He was born in Wong Oau Village, Canton, China to Hom Shee and Chong Lee and migrated to the United States in 1929 with his family. The family lived in San Francisco and Colorado for a short period of time and then moved to Billings in 1937 and have lived here ever since.
He served his country during World War II as a mess sergeant in the U. S. Army. He learned his trade as a cook at St. Louis Chinese restaurant on Montana Ave. In 1949, David, his mother and two brothers started the New Moon Cafe. He also worked at the Northern Hotel and Gusick's retiring in 1994.
He met and married Ma Siu Ching (Ann) in 1947 in Hong Kong. He is survived by his wife and three children; one daughter Anna (Alex) Cheung of Cerritos, Calif.; two sons, Donald (Elaine) and Daniel (Stella) of Billings; four grandchildren; three brothers, Thomas Hon (Miriam) Lee and Johnny Yun (Mei) Lee of Billings, and Bill Y. (Sonya) Lee of El Cerrito, Calif.; and one sister Ying Lee Custer of Billings, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and one great-great nephew.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at the LDS Chapel, 6th Street West and Ave. D. Interment will be at Mountview cemetery. Memorials to the charity of one's choice.

Harvey Douglas Anderson
BASIN, Wyo. - Harvey Douglas Anderson, 70 years of age, died at the New Horizon Care Center in Lovell on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999.
Douglas was born on May 30, 1928, in Billings, the son of William and Estella (Kite) Anderson. He received his schooling in Broadview, Mont., and graduated from Billings.
On March 3, 1953, he married Maureen Justine Kieley in Bozeman, Mont.
Douglas was a member of the Elks Lodge BPOE No. 1431 and the Basin Eagles Aerie No. 3086.
Douglas received his pilot license at the age of 14 years. He flew for Lynch Flying Service in Billings. After Lynch's sold out to All-Nuby in Belgrade, Mont., he flew for them in the late 1940s to 1960s. In 1960 he came to Greybull and flew C1-19 Fire Bombers for Hawkins & Powers Aviation. He enjoyed flying, fishing, hiking and gardening.
Douglas is survived by his wife Maureen of Basin; numerous nieces and nephews; his brother Bruce Anderson of Lincoln, Mont.; his sisters Harriet Drake of Billings, Ester Laux of Wheat Ridge, Colo., Mary Ann Rowe of Monahans, Texas.
Douglas is preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial Funeral Service will be held at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. in Billings, on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, at 11 a.m. Interment of cremains will be at Terrace Garden cemetery.
Memorial Fund has been set up at the First Interstate Bank in Greybull. Proceeds will be decided at a later date.

Doris Arnold
BROADVIEW - Doris Arnold, 72, of Broadview passed away on Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, in Mesa, Ariz.
Doris was born Oct. 15, 1926, on Flarety Flat near Columbus, the daughter of William and Gladys Colgrove. She graduated from Columbus High School and received her degree at the Billings Beauty College. She married Ben Arnold of Broadview on Oct. 5, 1947, and they have resided in Broadview where they ranch and farm since that time. Ben and Dori have spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz., since 1976 where they've enjoyed golfing and entertaining friends.
Doris' life revolved around her family and friends. She took special interest in her grandchildren's school activities, especially basketball and track. She enjoyed traveling and was a Past Worthy Matron of Bitterroot Chapter No. 96, O.E.S.
Mrs. Arnold is survived by Ben, her husband of 51 years; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Roy Clark, and Gail and Tony Erickson, all of Broadview; four grandchildren, Kelly (Cory) Mallon of Acton, Troy Clark of San Francisco, Calif., Ryan Erickson (Fiancee Shelley) of Broadview, and Linsey Erickson of Fort Collins, Colo.; one great-grandson, Keagan Mallon; two brothers, William and Alfred Colgrove of Columbus; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Virginia Lofing.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West in Billings. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children Fund or the charity of one's choice.

Lydia Lapp (Halter) Bentz
Lydia Bentz, 89, of 64 Charlene Street and Parkview Convalescent Care, passed away Feb. 3, 1999.
Lydia was born Jan. 31, 1910, in Hoffnungsthal (Valley of Hope) Gl¸ckstal District, South Russia, the daughter of Christian and Katharina (Herrmann) Lapp. With her parents she arrived by ship at Ellis Island, N.Y., March 16, 1911. The family traveled from New York to Bowdle, S.D., and then to Marshall, N.D., to farm.
On Oct. 15, 1930, Lydia married Edwin Anton Halter in McIntosh, S.D. They moved to Montana and worked on farms and in the coal mines. Edwin passed away Dec. 23, 1945. In 1947 Lydia married August Bentz in Billings. August passed away Jan. 11, 1974.
Lydia was a homemaker and kitchen helper working at the Dude Rancher Lodge and the Rimrock Lodge. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, embroidering, listening to music and watching TV. She very much loved her flowers and her cats.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Walter, Oswald, Edward; sisters, Bertha, Martha and Alma; daughter, Irene (Halter) Barney; stepdaughter, Helen (Bentz) Schaefer; stepsons, Emil Bentz and Reinhold Bentz.
Survivors include daughters, Violet (Halter) Freier (Richard), and June Nancy Bentz (Carl Big Man); son, August Bentz Jr. (Patsy); stepdaughter, Nora (Bentz) Debus (Herman); and stepsons, Reuben (Kathy) Bentz, Herbert (Ruby) Bentz, and John (Germainne) Sengar. She is also survived by 31 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Smith's Funeral Chapel West at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, Reverend Johan Rockstad officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Smith's Funeral Home in charge. If desired, donations can be made to the charity of one's choice. Reception at Smith's following services.

Bernard M. Chaffin
Bernard M. Chaffin, 91 of Billings, died Thursday morning, Feb. 4, 1999, at the Grand Park Assisted Living Center in Billings. The son of Rives and Grace Chaffin, he was born in Bruceville, Texas, Feb. 13, 1907.
The family moved to a cotton farm just outside of Sylvester, Texas, in 1908, where Bernard was raised and educated. In 1927, he went to work for the West Texas Utilities Company of Abilene, a power and light company in the line construction and maintenance business. Bernard followed this line of work all of his life.
In 1928, he began work for the Northern States Power Co. in Minot, N.D. Bernard worked there until 1947, with the exception of two years served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy 101st C.B. Battalion as an electricians mate. In 1947, he was employed by the Montana Power Company, working in Helena and Billings until retirement in 1972.
Bernard was a member of the Elks Club and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He enjoyed reading, bowling and traveling.
He married Fern Hall of Deering, N.D., in 1931. She preceded him in death in Billings in 1978.
In 1981, he married Bess Bohna of Billings, whom survives him. In addition to Bess, survivors include his stepson, Bob Pace; his stepdaughter, Rae Hill; and six step-grandchildren, all of Billings; his nephew, William Glick of Minot; his nieces, Geraldeen Vassilos of Chicago and Janellyn Rostad of Carpio, N.D.; and eight first cousins in Texas.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. Interment will be in Minot at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the charity of one's choice.

Rev. David Francis Dwyer
GREAT FALLS - David Francis Dwyer, son of Albert Dwyer and Anne Lepper, was born Sept. 24, 1928, in Seattle. When he was 2 years old, the family moved to Great Falls. He graduated from Saint Mary's Grade and High School in Great Falls in 1946, and he then entered Saint Edward's Seminary in Kenmore, Wash.
On May 15, 1954, he was ordained a priest by Bishop William J. Condon in Saint Ann's Cathedral in Great Falls. He served as a Catholic priest to the people of Eastern Montana for 45 years.
Father Dwyer served as an assistant pastor at Saint Raphael's Church in Glasgow in 1954, and served also as assistant pastor at Saint Patrick's Church in Billings in 1955. In 1957 he moved to Saint Ann's Cathedral as assistant pastor, director of the Heisey Memorial Center, the Diocesan director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, and the director of youth and vocations. He was elevated to pastor of Saint Ann's in 1960.
He was named pastor of Saints Cyril and Methodius Church in Stockett in 1962, and then in 1966 he moved to Scobey where he served as pastor of Saint Philip Bonitus Church. In 1969 Father Dwyer moved back to Great Falls where he held the position of chaplain at the College of Great Falls and served on their religion department staff. In 1971 he was assigned as pastor of Saint Benedict's Church in Roundup, and moved once again to Great Falls in 1974 to become pastor of Saint Joseph's Church. During this assignment he also was a member of the Diocesan Board of Consultors, was named vicar general by then-Bishop Thomas J. Murphy in 1980, was named to the Diocesan Finance Council and Care and Share Committee.
In July of 1982, he moved to Saint Patrick's Co-Cathedral in Billings and assisted Monsignor Andrew Zarek who retired in November, at which time Father Dwyer then became pastor. When Bishop Anthony M. Milone was installed Feb. 23, 1988, he re-appointed Father Dwyer as vicar general. His final move to Great Falls occurred when he retired in 1994 to the Stites Memorial Home. He resigned as vicar general in July of 1998.
In addition to these parochial and official assignments, Father Dwyer was also a member of the Diocesan Matrimonial Tribunal for more than 15 years, and acted in the capacity as advocate, defender of the bond and judge. He was very active in ecumenical activities and was president of the Great Falls Ministerial Association and secretary of the Billings Pastors' Association. He was currently serving as the vice-president of the Great Falls Ministerial Association. He was a past member of the Montana Association of Churches. He was also chaplain for the Billings Police Department for four years, being on call for emergencies and riding around with police officers who were on duty.
He acted for two years as chairman of both the Great Falls area and the Billings area Task Force on Planning as they considered the long range planning needs of the Catholic communities. He was instrumental in initiating the Stephen Ministry in the Billings area. In 1963 he participated in Montana's first Cursillo in Christianity, which was held in Anaconda, and he was very active in promoting the renewal movement throughout the diocese.
Father Dwyer became active in the Catholic Charismatic movement in 1969 and helped establish a number of prayer groups around the diocese. He was also involved in Marriage Encounter and Engaged Encounter movements. He was instrumental in building catechetical centers in the towns of Centerville and Scobey. For over 10 years he served as a member of the Northern Rockies Clinical Pastoral Education Committee.
Fatter Dwyer died of natural causes at his home in Great Falls on Feb. 5, 1999. He is survived by a brother, Allen, and a sister, Mary Marnin, both of Great Falls, and 19 nieces and nephews.
There will be a Vigil for the Deceased at Saint Ann's Cathedral in Great Falls on Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will also be at Saint Ann's Cathedral on Monday, Feb. 8, at 12 noon. The burial will follow at Mount Olivet cemetery in Great Falls and a reception will be held at Saint Joseph's Church, 420 2nd Ave. S.W. There will also be a memorial Mass at Saint Patrick's Co-Cathedral in Billings (215 N. 31st St.) on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 12:10 p.m. with a reception following. O'Connor Funeral Home in Great Falls is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Clerical Benefit Association, P.O. Box 1399, Great Falls, MT 59403.

John Geiger
GLENDIVE - John Geiger, age 83, of Glendive, died on Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at the Glendive Medical Center in Glendive.
Vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Joseph Ponessa officiating. Rite of Committal with military honors will be in the Dawson County cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.
John was born on July 20, 1915, in Morgan Creek, the son of Pius and Monica (Kuntz) Geiger. He was raised and educated at Morgan Creek. He entered the U.S. Army in March of 1942 and served as a tank commander for the 771 destroyer tank battalion during World War II at the Battle of the Bulge. Following his discharge in October of 1945 he returned to Morgan Creek where he farmed and ranched. On Oct. 11, 1955, he married Charlene Monte in Glendive. They moved into Glendive in 1979 where they have resided since.
John was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post No. 1125 and had held the position of Post Commander. He was also a member of the Glendive Moose Lodge No. 949 and had held the position of Governor and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Charleen of Glendive; two stepsons, Alan and his wife, Carol Monte of Pablo, and Gary Monte of Miles City; one sister, Veronica Wetsch of Bozeman; and one sister-in-law, Erlene Geiger of Billings; nine step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John Stanley Gray
POWELL, Wyo. - John Stanley Gray, 62, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at the Powell Hospital.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Union Presbyterian Church. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home is in charge.
