Ted Wesley Canoy, age 67, of 3319 Shady Forest Road, Randleman, died Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.

Graveside service will be 2:00 PM Friday, October 14, 2005 at Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro with Captain Jason Hughes officiating.

Mr. Canoy was a native of Randolph County, and was retired from Randolph Packing Company. He attended Salvation Army Services.

Survivors include wife: Peggy Canoy, of the home; daughters: Penny Oxendine of Rock Hill, SC, Sherry Spain of Ramseur, NC, Terry Canoy of Rock Hill, SC, Tracey Corum and Tonya Griffin, both of Randleman, NC; sons: Terry Spain, Wayne Taylor, and Jonathan Taylor, all of Randleman, NC; 14 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, October 14, 2005 from 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 600 South Main Street, Randleman, NC.

Laura Retta Young

Laura Retta Young, age 92, of 3931 Millikan Road, Sophia died Thursday, October 13, 2005 at her home. She was born August 11, 1913, daughter of Williard and Virginia Greenlee Young.

Funeral service will be 8:00 PM Saturday, October 15, 2005 at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, Randleman with Rev. Kenneth L. Reaves officiating.

Burial will be 3:00 PM in Newdale Presbyterian Church cemetery, Newdale, NC.

Mrs. Young was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Randolph County after moving from Yancey County. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Randleman, and was preceded in death by her husband, Howard M. Young, brothers, Lewis, Lee, Lones, and Paul Young and sister, Lucille Bennett.

Survivors are: son, Wade M. Young of Sophia, NC; daughter, Barbara Y. Ford of Burnsville, NC; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday, October 15, 2005 from 6 - 8 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 600 South Main Street, Randleman, NC and Sunday, October 16, 2005 from 2 - 3 PM at Newdale Presbyterian Church, Newdale, NC.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, Inc., 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262.

Charles Luther Edwards, Jr.

Charles Luther Edwards, Jr., age 57, of 814 Stage Coach Road, Siler City died Monday, October 10, 2005 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill. He was born November 19, 1947 the son of Charles L. Edwards, Sr. and Lela Virginia (Bedwell) Edwards.

Mr. Edwards was a native of Guilford County and was employed with Chatham County Schools Maintance Department.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie Albright Edwards of the home; two daughters: Lori E. Andrews and husband, Kevin of Siler City, Pamela Edwards of the home and one granddaughter, Samantha Andrews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 12, 2005 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The graveside service will be Thursday, October 13, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Brush Creek Baptist Church cemetery, 5345 Airport Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Scott Faw officiating.

Walter Alvis (Al) O´Connor

Walter Alvis (Al) O´Connor, age 74, of 813 Sheffield Drive - Apt 22, Siler City died Monday, October 10, 2005 at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro. Mr. O´Connor was born January 20, 1931 the son of Charles and Katie (Packer) O´Connor.

Mr. O´Connor was a native of Chatham County, an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a retired engineer with NASA and Catalytic, Inc.

He is survived by one son: Charles (Chuck) A. O´Connor of Asheboro; two sisters: Shirley O. Hill of Siler City, Sylvia O. Coble of Siler City; granddaughter, Lorybeth; first wife, Jane Bunting O'Connor of Asheboro; Long Time Friend, Dalton Smith of Greensboro.

The family will receive friends Thursday, October 13, 2005 from 12 to 2 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. A graveside with military Rites by the Randolph Honor Guard will be Thursday, October 13, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Oakwood cemetery, N. Chatham Ave, Siler City with Rev. Randy Queen and Chaplin James Frye officiating.

Jean Kokosky Mastej Murphy

Jean Kokosky Mastej Murphy, 89, of 6537 Silk Hope-Gum Springs Road, Siler City died Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Murphy was born June 15, 1916 at Bronx, NY the daughter of the late Joseph and Amelia (Kurosad) Kokosky.

Mrs. Murphy was a native of Bronx, NY, was a homemaker and a member of St. Julia´s Parrish. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Mastej, sons, Michael Murphy, Stephen and Henry Mastej.

She is survived by five sons: Alexander Mastej of Siler City, NC, Edmond Mastej of Vero Beach, FL, Frank Mastej of Connecticut, NH, Michael Mastej of Hawthorne, NJ, James Mastej of Wayne, NJ, three sisters: Vera Benna of Long Island, NY, Irene Robertson of West Haven, CT, Lottie Robertson of Porte St. Lucie, FL, 20 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

The funeral mass will be Sunday (October 16, 2005) at 7:30 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City with Father Joseph Madden, OFm-Conv officiating.

Steven Michael Behrens

Steven Michael Behrens was born in Decorah, Iowa, January 17, 1951, to Roy and Ilah Behrens, and was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Eldorado, Iowa. He lived in Festina, Iowa until the family moved to Arlington, Iowa where Steve graduated from Starmont High School in 1969. While in school he excelled in baseball, football, basketball and track. Upon graduating high school, Steve then attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, graduating in 1976.

Steve always lived life to the fullest by flying and racing. He had his first Solo flight when he was only 16 years old. After graduation, he was employed flying airplanes for Atlantic Aero, Burlington Industries, Capps Pharmaceutical and then in 1989 United Airlines where he made Captain in 1995. Steve began car racing in 1992 and won several races at both the Piedmont and Farmington tracks. He was track champion in “Sportsman” twice, and was ”Top Eliminator” honored by IHRA.

Steve was also a member at the Asheboro Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf and won first flight at the club championship tournament.

Steve loved his family and friends, and although many miles often separated us, Steve always let us know how much he loved and cared for us. He also enjoyed teaching golf; telling stories to get a smile; playing guitar; riding motorcycles; and dreamed of building his own Ultralight aircraft in the coming year.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Behrens of Oelwein, Iowa and his brother, Jeffery Roy Behrens.

Steve is survived by his wife Sheila Behrens, daughters, Kelli Behrens and Stephanie Behrens both of the home; son, Kyle Behrens of Oregon; mother, Ilah Behrens of Oelwein, Iowa; Grandchildren, Kaleb and Samantha of Oregon; twin brother, Bruce Behrens and his wife, Kathi of Oelwein, Iowa; brother, Kevin Behrens of Lamont, Iowa; sister, Debra Behrens of Sunland, California; nieces, Brooke Behrens, Heather Behrens, Sierra Behrens and nephew, Jeremiah Behrens.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Grays Chapel United Methodist Church, 5056 N.C. Hwy 22 North, Franklinville with Rev. Douglas Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 18, 2005 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC.

Mary Grace Barker

Mary Grace Barker, 93, of 2051 Wrenn-Smith Road, Siler City died Saturday, October 8, 2005 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., Siler City. Miss. Barker was born September 3, 1912, the daughter Henry L. Barker and Lydia (Phillips) Barker.

Miss. Barker was native of Chatham County an a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church. She was a Register Nurse and retired from the Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

She is survived by Nieces, Allene Hart of Siler City, Rachel Barker of Siler City; Christine Harris of High Point, Virginia Justice of Siler City, Juanita Richardson of Bear Creek, Frances Gilmore of Siler City, Johnie Barker Jr. of Bennett, Earl Barker of Sanford, Virgil Barker of Siler City, David Barker of Siler City and Tommy Barker of Texas.

The family will receive friends Sunday (October 9, 2005) from 6 to 8 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral will be Monday (October 10, 2005) 2:00 PM at Brush Creek Baptist Church, 5345 Airport Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Patrick Fuller and Rev. Randy Queen officiating.

Memorials may be made to Brush Creek Baptist Church cemetery or Building Fund, C/O Judy Lane, 45 John Lane Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207

Durema Ola Dowd Burke

Durema Ola Dowd Burke, age 84, of 400 Vision Drive, Asheboro formerly of 316 North Third Avenue, Siler City, died Thursday, October 13, 2005 at Sunbridge of Asheboro, Asheboro.

Mrs. Burke was born February 20, 1921, the daughter of E. F. Dowd and Annie (Hart) Dowd.

She was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and member of Rives Chapel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. R. Burke.

She is survived by one son: Charlie W. Burke of Asheboro; one sister: Jeanette Dollar of Sanford; one brother: Bobby Dowd of Goldston; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, October 14, 2005 from 7 to 9 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. A graveside service will be Saturday, October 15, 2005 at 11:00 AM at Rives Chapel Baptist cemetery, 4258 Rives Chapel Road, Siler City with Rev. Larry Soblotne officiating.

Mary Kathleen Maness Spivey

Mary Kathleen Maness Spivey, 75, of 1741 Wrenn Smith Road, Siler City died Sunday, March 26, 2006 at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro.

Mrs. Spivey was born June 4, 1930, the daughter of Thomas E. and Imma (Kidd) Maness.

Mrs. Spivey was a native of Moore County and a homemaker. She was a member of Sanford Freewill Holiness Church, Sanford.

She is survived by her husband Daniel Lee Spivey, one daughter: Mary Ellen Spivey of Siler City, NC, one son: John D. Spivey of Siler City, NC, two sisters: Virtle M. Mele of Mt. Olive, NC, Lilly M Jeager of Suffolk, VA, two brothers: Colon Maness of Robbins, NC, Floyd Maness of Bear Creek, NC

The graveside services will be Tuesday March 28, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Chatham Memorial Park, 13260 Hwy 64 West, Siler City with Pearl Castleberry officiating.

C. Harold Jones

C. Harold Jones, age 83, of 657 East Fourth Street, Siler City died Monday, March 27, 2006 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro. He was born October 4, 1922, the son of Charles Tate Jones and Myrtle (Overman) Jones.

Mr. Jones was a native of Randolph County, a member of First Wesleyan Church and was owner/operator of Modern Shoe Repair, Liberty.

He is survived by his wife Maggie Linens Jones of the home; one daughter: Linda J. Burke and husband, Buddy of Siler City; one son: Harold Dean Jones and wife, Wanda of Lexington; one sister: Doris J. Gilliland of Siler City; one brother: Bill Jones of Scottsdale, AL; three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 29, 2006 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral will be Thursday, March 30, 2006 at 2:00 PM at First Wesleyan Church, 608 N. 3rd Ave., Siler City with Rev. Kevin Stumbo officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Charity of Choice.

William Albert “Bill” Wright

William Albert “Bill” Wright, age 59, of 210 Holly Hills Drive, Troy died Sunday, April 2, 2006 at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro.

Mr. Wright was born September 24, 1946 the son of Inez (Wright) .

Bill was a native of Montgomery County and a US Army Veteran of the Vietname War. He had worked at Art´s Package Store, Troy Amoco and was the owner/operator of Shaker´s Grill in Troy.

He is survived by one daughter: Kara Wright of Troy, NC; one son and his wife : Brad and Monica Wright of Troy, NC; one sister: Vickie Wedding of High Point, NC; two brothers: Jimmy Wright of Troy, NC, and William Wright of FL; one grandchild.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 3, 2006 from 7-9 PM at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 211 North Main Street, Troy, NC and other times at the home of Brad Wright 472 Vestal Drive, Troy, NC. The funeral will be Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at 4:00 PM at Troy Wesleyan Church, 842 Ophir Ave, Troy with Rev. Roger Rhoads officiating. Burial will follow in Southside cemetery, Troy.

Emmie Edith Paul Thurston

Emmie Edith Paul Thurston, age 71, of 808 Highland Street, Asheboro died Saturday, February 17, 2007 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Mrs. Thurston was born March 20, 1935 at Conway, SC the daughter of Robert Wilson and Mary Lenora Martin Paul.

Mrs. Thurston was a member of West Asheboro Baptist Church. She was retired from Black & Decker, and volunteered at the Christian United Outreach Center (CUOC). She was the widow of Richard A. Thurston who died in 1993.

She is survived by three daughters: June Garner of Ramseur, NC, Denise Del Santo of New London, NC, Cheryl Thurston of Asheboro, NC and five sons: Edward Luke Thurston of Asheboro, NC, Richard Thurston, Jr. of Asheboro, NC, Duke Thurston of Seagrove, NC, Bradley Thurston of Asheboro, NC, Jacob Thurston of Asheboro, NC: 18 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; two sisters: Charlotte Eason and Lela Roberts both of Conway, SC and one brother: Hildon Paul of Helen, GA.

The family will receive friends Monday, February 19, 2007 from 6:30-9:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. The funeral will be Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at 2:00 PM at West Asheboro Baptist Church, 831 Uwharrie Street, Asheboro with Rev. Samuel Hicks and Rev. Steve Byrd officiating.

Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro.

Walter Matis

Walter Matis, age 64, of 2222 Danny Bell Rd., Asheboro died Thursday, February 15, 2007 at his home.

Mr. Matis was a native of Connecticut and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was formerly employed with Dictaphone in Stratford, CT, and was retired from Kennametal. He was a member of St. Joseph´s Catholic Church, where he was a Lay Lector and Eucharistic minister. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Matis.

He is survived by his sons, Walter Matis of Stratford, CT and Stephen Matis of CT; granddaughter, Christina Evans-Matis of Stratford, CT; brothers, George, John, Tom and Joe Matis all of CT; sisters, Florence Kaczegowicz, Helen Matis, and Ann Benzy all of CT.

The family will receive friends Thursday, February 22, 2007 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. The funeral will be held on Friday, February 23, 2007 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Asheboro with Father Frank Cancro officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 512 W. Wainman Ave, Asheboro, NC 27203 or Community Home Care & Hospice, 1213 Shana Lane, Asheboro, NC 27205.
