Fulp Sr., William Marshall

William Marshall Fulp Sr., 86, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center. Born Dec. 19, 1918, in Washington D.C. to Cabell Crawford and Beatrice Livengood Fulp, he spent his first 10 years in Baltimore, Md., before moving to Main Street in Old Salem. He graduated from Reynolds High School in 1936, where he was a proud member of the marching band. In 1941, Marshall received his bachelor's degree in Business and Economics from Duke University, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and played in the Duke University Marching Band. After graduation from Duke, he was employed by Chemical Bank in New York City, before entering the U.S. Coast Guard in 1943, where he reached the rank of lieutenant commander. During World War II he was assigned to the PC 469 and the USDE 387 (USS Vance), earning the American Campaign Ribbon, European African Theater, Asiatic-Pacific Theater and a World War Two Victory Medal. Mr. Fulp retired in 1984 as vice president of the Bahnson Company (Luwa). During his career, he traveled to over 73 countries for business and was a member of the U.S. Specialized Trade Mission with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to the Far East, Turkey, Iran, Nigeria, and Ghana. After retiring from Bahnson, he moved to Jekyll Island, Ga., where he lived for 10 years before returning to Winston-Salem. Mr. Fulp was a member of Home Moravian Church and played the clarinet in the Salem Band. He was a past vice president of Rotary International, where he was a member from 1948 to 1984. Marshall's wife of 40 years, Martha Bullock Fulp, preceded him in death in 1984. He is survived by his five children, son William Marshall Fulp Jr. and wife Camille of Alexandria, Va., daughter Marsha Lynn Fulp of Winston-Salem, daughter Ann Fulp Walker and husband David of Orange, Calif., son John Cabell Fulp and wife Arlene of Winston-Salem and son Robert Wesley Fulp and wife Michelle of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Reynolds High School Marching Band Fulp Memorial Fund, c/o Reynolds High School, 301 N. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem NC 27101.

Fulton, Sara Ellerbe Covington

Sara Ellerbe Covington Fulton, 82, of Winston-Salem died Monday morning, Jan. 10, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Fulton was born March 25, 1922, in Rockingham, a daughter of the late Alec Alexander Covington and the late Sallie Copeland Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Leroy Fulton, in 2001 and her brother, Herdis Copeland Covington. She is survived by her children, Paul Leroy Fulton Jr. and wife, Vera Vrsecky Fulton, of Winston-Salem, Scott Alexander Fulton and wife, Donna Sides Fulton, of Clemmons and Bette Fulton Williams and husband, Donald Ellis Williams, of Winston-Salem; sisters Emily Covington Williams of Rockingham and Lillian Covington Thrower of Morehead City; and seven grandchildren, Victoria and Holly Fulton of Winston-Salem, Alex and Robert Fulton of Clemmons and Taylor, Reed and Laura Williams of Winston-Salem. The funeral service and entombment will be private. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 12, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkway Presbyterian Church minister's discretionary fund, 1000 Yorkshire Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

Gibson Sr., Kermit Garwood "Tom"

PFAFFTOWN - Mr. Kermit Garwood "Tom" Gibson Sr., 79, of Pfafftown died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 6, 1925, in Iredell County to Charles and Hattie Eads Gibson. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Methodist Church. Mr. Gibson graduated from Reynolds High School and was a combat M.P. with the 82nd Airborne in World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was retired from Roadway Express. Mr. Gibson was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Long Gibson. Surviving are his children, Kermit "Jim" (Paula) Gibson Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Diann (Hurley) Johnson of Yadkinville, Scott (Lori) Gibson of Pfafftown, Sharon Taylor of East Bend and Steve Gibson of Pfafftown; a brother, Harold Gibson of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend with the Rev. Henry Cook officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, Jan. 12, at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. "Paps," you'll be greatly missed.

Glenn, Eugene

The Rev. Eugene Glenn, 87, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005. The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at St. Homes Missionary Baptist Church in Elkin. Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hartsoe, Kathleen Potts

COLFAX - Kathleen Potts Hartsoe met her Lord and Savior face to face Monday night, Jan. 10, 2005. She was born May 13, 1924, daughter of Andrew Jackson Potts and Lula Brooks Potts, who both preceded her in death. Her brother, Noah E. Potts, also preceded her in death. She attended Christ Wesleyan Church, where she taught the 2- and 3-year-old Toddler Sunday School Class for many decades. She faithfully sang in the church choir and was active in the Women's Missionary Society. Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Fred Cole Hartsoe; daughter and son-in-law Becky and Joel Warner of Colfax; son Mark Hartsoe of Walnut Cove; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Potts of Winston-Salem. A service of celebration for her life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Christ Wesleyan Church, 2390 Union Cross Road, Winston-Salem by the Rev. Joey Jennings, the Rev. Jerry Lumston and the Rev. Jeff Vogler. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens cemetery in Winston-Salem. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, Jan. 12, at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point. Memorials may be directed to the building fund at Christ Wesleyan Church, Winston-Salem or Hayworth Wesleyan Church, High Point.

Martin, Effie Hairston

AXTON, Va. - Effie Hairston Martin, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at New Fall Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Martinsville is in charge of arrangements.

Reed, Iris Stith

Mrs. Iris Stith Reed, widow of Harry L. Reed, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at the Triad United Methodist Home. Mrs. Reed was born in Winston-Salem on Aug. 26, 1911, daughter of Frank A. and Viola Doub Stith. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Centenary United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jack Yarbrough. Mrs. Reed will lie in state Thursday at Voglers Main Street Chapel.

Reeder Jr., Thomas Leonard

Mr. Thomas Leonard Reeder Jr., 79, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Arbor Acres. He was born March 25, 1925, in Baltimore, Md., to Thomas Leonard Reeder Sr. and Betty Straus Reeder. Mr. Reeder was preceded in death by his wife, Alberta H. Reeder. Survivors include two sons, Thomas Leonard Reeder III of Marietta, Ga., and Scott van den Berg Reeder of Morris, Ill.; two daughters, Karen R. Rife of Doylestown, Pa., and Nancy R. Crouch of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren, Matthew Reeder, Christopher Reeder, Dan Reeder, Jen Reeder, Ryan Rife, Kyle Rife, Sheri Rink and Greg Crouch; two sisters, Betty Ann Murray and Alexandra Reeder, both of Baltimore, Md.; and a devoted friend, James Inglis of Baltimore, Md. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29 at Crestlawn cemetery in Marriottsville, Md. Those attending are asked to meet at the cemetery office at 10:45 a.m. for a processional to the gravesite. Reynolds, Margie Joblin

At 8:40 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, Mrs. Margie Joblin Reynolds, 64, was called home to be with her Lord. She was born March 28, 1940, in Water Valley, Miss., to Charles and Pearl Reasonover Joblin. Mrs. Reynolds was a member of Good Hope Christian Church and a member of the Kernersville YMCA. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Preceding her in death were her parents; four brothers; a sister; and an infant baby brother. Surviving are her husband, Wallace Wayne Reynolds; a son, Rick Reynolds and wife, Bonnie, of Rural Hall; a daughter, Cindy Booe and husband, Ron, of Mocksville; three grandchildren, Tiffany Booe, Joshua Booe and Briana Reynolds; two stepgrandchildren, Josh Comer and Brittany Ellis; three sisters, Jennie Sparks and husband, Tom, of Winston-Salem, Louise Gardner of Philadelphia, Miss., and Clyde Potts of Paris, Miss.; several nieces and nephews; very close friends Bonnie Davis of East Bend, Dottie and Johnny; and neighbor Patsy Rogers. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Parklawn Memorial Park with Pastor Ron Groce officiating. Robertson Jr., Arthur "Bubba"

Mr. Arthur "Bubba" Robertson Jr. was born Jan. 9, 1925, in Winnsboro, S.C., to the late Arthur Robertson Sr. and Lucy Hall Robertson. He departed this life Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. A homegoing service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 12, at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph R. Samuels Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. Family visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the church. (Russell)

Smith, James Vernon "J.V."

GREENSBORO - Mr. James "J.V." Vernon Smith, 67, formerly of Stokes County died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Nov. 23, 1937, in Stokes County to the late Edgar and Carrie Booth Smith. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Donna S. Watts and husband Harold of Greensboro and Gina Hall and husband Roland of Vesta; son Wesley Smith of North, Va.; grandchildren Candace Watts, Cameron Watts, Chezley Watts, Chad Williams, Collin Williams and Zachary Smith; sisters and brother-in-law Peggy Cromer of Walnut Cove and Hilda Simpson and husband David of Oak Ridge; and brothers and sister-in-law Vance Smith and wife Ruth of Winston-Salem and Maxie Smith of Martinsville, Va. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a daughter, Melinda Smith; and two sisters, Pauline Collins and Nancy Hampton. A service to celebrate the life and freedom of Mr. Smith will be held at 7 p.m. today, Jan. 12, at Howell-Nelson Funeral Chapel of Pilot Mountain, conducted by the Rev. Jennie Leake Hemrick. Tuttle, Jesse Norman

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Jesse Norman Tuttle, 85, of Walnut Cove died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Britthaven of Madison. Mr. Tuttle was born June 27, 1919, in Madison, the son of the late Jess Tuttle and the late Lillie Sharp Tuttle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Josie Hall Tuttle; and two sisters, Virginia Ayers and Margaret Combs. Norman participated in World War II as a member of General Patton's 3rd Army - Armored Division, from 1943 until the German surrender in 1945. Afterwards, he was a part of the U.S. occupational force in Germany and was a guard during part of the Nuremberg Trials. Returning to his home state of North Carolina, he owned and operated an oil business in Wallace and later concluded a 23-year career in automobile sales in the Madison area. Norman was a devoted, lifelong church member and an active participant, having served as a superintendent of Sunday schools, a deacon and an enthusiastic member of the choir. As a loving, devoted and revered grandfather, he had a very special relationship with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Virginia Carter Tuttle; his daughter, Gayle Wannamaker and husband, Charles W. III, of Greensboro; sister Lillian Beach of Winston-Salem; brother William Tuttle and wife, Howell, of Stokesdale; three grandchildren, Carson Skottowe Wannamaker, Melissa Gayle Wannamaker and Charles Woods Wannamaker IV; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 12, in the chapel of Ray Funeral Home with the Rev. Bryan Fox officiating. Visitation will follow immediately after the service. Interment will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at the Rockfish Presbyterian Church cemetery in Wallace. Wagoner, Carolyn Phifer

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Carolyn Phifer Wagoner, 88, formerly of Winston-Salem, N.C., and for the past several years a resident at Morningside Assisted Living in Charlottesville, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005. Mrs. Wagoner was preceded in death by her husband, Jennings L. Wagoner Sr.; a son, Carroll Phifer Wagoner; and a daughter, Mary Louise Wagoner, all of Winston-Salem, N.C. She is survived by two sons, Dr. Jennings L. Wagoner Jr. and his wife, Shirley Canady Wagoner, of Charlottesville and Ret. USMC Lt. Col. William O. Wagoner and his wife, Dr. Carolyn Bean Wagoner, of Coronado, Calif.; a brother, Dr. Allie G. Phifer of Sumter, S.C.; a sister, Nancy Phifer Rainer of Selma, Ala.; two grandsons, David Carroll Wagoner and his wife, Jennifer Martin Wagoner, of Charlottesville and Brian Jennings Wagoner of Los Angeles, Calif.; and four great-grandchildren, Morgan Elizabeth, Caroline Grace, Katherine Leigh and William Reese Wagoner, all of Charlottesville. Louise Hensley, a dear friend during her last years of life, is among other family members and friends who will mourn her passing. Mrs. Wagoner, a native of Sumter, S.C., was a member of First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, N.C., during all of her adult life until moving to Charlottesville, where she continued her habit of regular attendance at University Baptist Church as long as her health would permit. She was active in all aspects of church life and for many years was involved in Meals on Wheels and related visitation charities. She was a member of the Old North State Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mrs. Wagoner was a gifted musician who majored in violin at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. Even after Alzheimer's disease began to rob her of many memories and skills, Mrs. Wagoner maintained her musical ability and regularly delighted residents and staff at Morningside by playing piano by ear and memory until she became physically unable to do so. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Teague Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at University Baptist Church by Dr. Tom Leland. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Vogler's Reynolda Road Chapel in Winston-Salem, N.C. A graveside funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Forsyth Memorial Park, conducted by Dr. David Hughes of Winston-Salem's First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, N.C., University Baptist Church of Charlottesville or another charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to thank the staff of Morningside Assisted Living for their kind assistance during Mrs. Wagoner's last years as well as the many friends who shared the journey.

Abbott, Carlotta Lane

Mrs. Carlotta Lane Abbott, 92, of 1110 Hickory Tree Road passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Abbott was born Sept. 21, 1912, in Ossining, N.Y. She was the greatest mother, grandmother and great-grandmother ("Grape," as the great-grandchildren called her,) there ever was on earth. She was married to William Abbott until he passed in 1978. She was an inspiration to all who came in contact with her. Carlotta was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy and a member of the Good Times Club. She was a mother, nurse, doctor, boss, healer and the greatest sandwich maker, fun and caring. She is survived by six children, Virginia (Kenneth) Mason of Winston-Salem, Loretta Gallo of Florida, William R. (Elaine) Abbott of Austinville, Va., Nancy (Ron) Yosi of Pittsburgh, Pa., James L. Abbott of Florida and Patricia Abbott of Uganda, East Africa; her grandchildren, Sue Cantrell, Tom and Bill Benbow, Louis and Frank Gallo, Linda Annibale, Bill and Jim Abbott, Pam Gallimore and Matt McDonald; her great-grandchildren, Angela, Louis, Beau, Brandon, Casey, Jessi, Madison, Cole, Cody and Sydney; and a great-great-grandchild, Dominic. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 this evening, Dec. 8, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A private graveside service will be conducted Friday at Parklawn Memorial Park. Allred, Ann Boyd

Mrs. Ann Boyd Allred, 70, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at her home. She was born Jan. 5, 1934, in Davidson County, the daughter of Claytie Miller Boyd. Mrs. Allred was a member of Faith Chapel in Lexington as well as being a lifelong member of the Moravian Church. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose and the National Association of Women in Construction. She did volunteer work for the National Cancer Society and served on the board, did volunteer work for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and was an active member of the Winston-Salem Bowling Association, sponsoring teams to the national, state and local tournaments. She was a board member of Little Heart Strings Day Care Center and was very active in many charities. Surviving are her husband, Jim Allred of the home; three daughters, Jeanne Bryant and husband, Butch, of Rock Hill, S.C., Crystal Desch and husband, Bill, of Charlotte and Linda McKnight and husband, Bart, of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Robert and Gene Bryant, Graham and Bradley Jones and Landis, Haley and Katie McKnight; five stepchildren, Jim L. Allred Jr. and wife, Theresa, of Wilmington, Kenneth Allred Sr. and wife, Joni, of Wake Forest, Dwight Allred and wife, Darla, of Mayodan, Nancy K. Allred Hill of Mayodan and Teresa Allred Walker and husband, Michael, of Hillsborough; 10 stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; her extended family, Wayne Miller of Ocean Isle Beach and Pat Sullivan of Bolivia, N.C.; and a very special friend, Patty Wilson of Lexington. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Clemmons Moravian Church with the Rev. Ray Burke officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Leona Sparks Combs, 88, of Brookview Road, North Wilkesboro, widow of Roscoe Levi "Dock" Combs, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Combs was born April 8, 1916, in Custer County, S.D., to Will N. and Mattie Gambill Sparks. She was a member of Fishing Creek Arbor Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Inscore of Wilkesboro; two sons, Jerry Lee Combs of North Wilkesboro and Rex Levi Combs of Wilkesboro; a sister, Marie Holloway of North Wilkesboro; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 8, in the Reins-Sturdivant Chapel, with the Rev. David Wellborn officiating. Entombment will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park.
