Goins, Floyd Roscoe

PINNACLE - Mr. Floyd Roscoe Goins, 73, of Pinnacle passed away Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at his home. He was born Oct. 23, 1931, in Stokes County to Samuel Goins and Susie Goins. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Mr. Goins was the owner/operator of Winston Trucking Co. He is survived by his wife, Betty S. Goins; his mother, Susie M. Goins; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Goins of Pfafftown and Laura MacLeod of Winston Salem and David and Debra of Linden, Calif.; three sisters, Hazel Hunter of Mount Airy, Mary Wall of Mount Airy and Shelby Parker of Oregon; five grandchildren, Shannon, James, Gray and Austin Goins and Amanda Ellington; and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Zachary Ellington. Mr. Goins was preceded in death by his father; a brother, S.A. Goins; and a sister, Shirley Bryant. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Cox-Needham Chapel with Brother Don Collins officiating. Interment will follow in Hunter-Kader Family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 8, at the funeral home and other times at the Goins residence. Floral tributes may be made or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1900 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The Goins family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain.

Greer, Maude Walters

JEFFERSON - Maude Walters Greer, 97, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004. The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Friendship Baptist Church. Boone Family Funeral Home of West Jefferson is in charge of arrangements.

Hickman, Kaye Pitts

BOONE - Mrs. Kaye Pitts Hickman, 40, of 364 Center Court Drive, Boone died Sunday evening, Dec. 5, 2004, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone. She was born March 10, 1964, in Blowing Rock, Watauga County, to Kathleen Foster Pitts and the late Norman Everette Pitts. Mrs. Hickman was a graduate of Watauga High School and a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Blowing Rock. Survivors include her husband, Marcus T. Hickman Jr. and a daughter, Wyndy K. Hickman, both of the home; her mother, Ms. Kathleen Pitts of Blowing Rock; a sister, Ms. Pat Greene of Marion; and a sister-in-law, Stuart Silver and husband, Steve, of Boone. She is also survived by a number of beloved aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 8, at First Baptist Church of Blowing Rock with the Rev. Rhonda Gailes officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn cemetery in Blowing Rock. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today prior to the service at the church. Flowers are appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the "Mama Kaye" Fund, c/o First Citizens Bank, 1021 Main St., Blowing Rock, NC 28605. Hoke, Horace Eugene

Mr. Horace Eugene Hoke, 78, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Asbury Care Center in Charlotte. He was born June 25, 1926, in Rowan County to Robert Pierce and Beulah Brown Hoke. Mr. Hoke was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church for 48 years. He was a graduate of Catawba College and served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific from 1944 to 1945. He was retired from Western Electric/AT&T with 38 years of service. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Hoke. Surviving are his wife of the home, Geraldyne Hoffner Hoke, whom he married on Aug. 9, 1952; two daughters, Susan Hoke Johnson and husband Robert of Charlotte and Martha Hoke Lear and husband John of Phoenix; three grandchildren, Robert, Hannah and Meg; and two brothers, Kenneth Hoke of Goldsboro and Fred Hoke of Mooresville. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Augsburg Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ronald Rinn and the Rev. Shirley Harrison officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park in Salisbury. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 8, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Jarrell, Betty Gillespie

THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Betty Gillespie Jarrell, 76, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Holly Hill Memorial Park cemetery. J.C. Green & Sons of Thomasville is assisting the family.

Kellyman, Ivylin E.

Ivylin E. Kellyman of 4755 Duffer Lane, Winston-Salem passed Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at her residence. She was born June 20, 1930, in Jamaica, West Indies, to Shadrack Edwards and Maud Walker Edwards. She was a member of the Church of God of the First Born Seventh Day. She is survived by her spouse, Beresford Kellyman; five sons, Basil Kellyman, Anthony Kellyman, Robert Kellyman, Lee Kellyman and Earl Kellyman; seven daughters, Gloria Bogle, Agatha Morgan, Elaine Knight, Catherine Allison, Inez Grime, Bulah Nelson and Tunney Edwards; a brother, Donald Edwards; 36 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and special friends Pastor Frondrel and Mother Tucker. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Gilmore Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. Arrangements are entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home Services.

Kennedy, Robert Hayes

CHARLOTTE - Robert Hayes Kennedy, beloved husband of Grace and father of Thomas and Hampton, was received into the loving arms of God Monday, Dec. 6, 2004. He died peacefully at his home in Charlotte with his family. Bob was born Sept. 25, 1955, in Atlanta, Ga., to Martin Hayes Kennedy and Ann McCoy Kennedy. He was preceded in death by his mother, who passed earlier this year. He is survived by his father; a brother; five sisters; a sister-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. Bob began his career in Winston-Salem in 1979 at Wachovia Bank, where he became a senior vice-president of agency trading in the Bond and Money Market Group. He was a first vice-president at Legg Mason in Charlotte since 2000 and head of government agency underwriting in Legg Mason Wood Walker Fixed Income Capital Market Group. Bob loved gardening, fishing at the beach and reading and had a passion for history, but his favorite times were spent with his children. He was a devoted Catholic and lived his life for God. The Kennedy family thanks the families for their devoted support and the many friends who faithfully encouraged Bob throughout his illness. A special thanks is extended to Dr. Brian Jerby, who was not only a doctor but a companion and a source of guidance. Thanks to Patsy Ballard, Bob's hospice nurse, who tenderly cared for him. An educational trust for Tuck and Hamp was set up by Bob's co-workers at Legg Mason. Donations may be made to The Kennedy Children Trust, c/o Legg Mason Wood Walker, P.O. Box 11715, Charlotte, NC 28220. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Harry and Bryant Co. in Charlotte. Curlin, Bishop Emeritus, celebrant and the Very Rev. Paul Q. Gary and the Rev. Lawrence LoMonaco, co-celebrants. Harry & Bryant Co. is serving the family of Mr. Kennedy.

King, Nancy Wood

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Nancy Wood King, 62, of King Road passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Aug. 4, 1942, in Yadkin County to Roy Herbert and Ruby Nevada Hayes Wood. Mrs. King was a homemaker and a member of Sandy Springs Baptist Church. She spent a lot of time helping others by sitting with sick friends and neighbors, and she loved working with her flowers at home. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Wood. Surviving are her husband of 32 years, Jimmy C. King, of the home; her daughter, Shannon D. King of Hamptonville; a sister, Bertha Vanhoy; and five brothers, Mac Wood, Felix Wood, James Wood, Franklin Wood and Roy Wayne Wood. Her funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 8, at the Gentry Family Chapel in Jonesville by the Rev. David Kiser and the Rev. Tim Tucker. Burial will follow in the Sandy Springs Baptist Church cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Yadkin County, P.O. Box 1267, Yadkinville, NC 27055. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. David Griffin and staff of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for all the care and support given to Mrs. King. "He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.... But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint." Isaiah 40: 29-31.

Knight, John Allen

PINE HALL - Mr. John Allen Knight, 40, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at his residence after a battle with cancer. He was born June 9, 1964, the son of Jack and Margaret Hicks Knight. He was a member of Beaver Island Baptist Church in Mayodan and worked in construction for 23 years with CCI Consultant Contractors, Inc. In addition to his father, of Madison, he survived by his wife, Crystal Hicks Knight; a son, Jack Allen Knight; a daughter, Brittany Nicole Knight; two sisters, Jackie Land of Pine Hall and Debbie (Perry) Roberts of Welcome; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Beaver Island Baptist Church with Pastor Steve Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 this evening, Dec. 8, at the church. Pfeiffer, Helen Eileen

Mrs. Helen Eileen Pfeiffer, 79, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Pfeiffer was born Sept. 21, 1925, in Forsyth County to George Alexander and Maggie Beam Carpenter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, and a daughter, Deborah Crotts. She is survived by a son, Mike Pfeiffer and wife Kathy of Advance; a son-in-law, Charles Crotts of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Kristen Crotts and Nicholas Pfeiffer; a brother, Don Carpenter and wife Carol; and a sister, Edna Cartner and husband Bill, both of Kernersville. A 7 p.m. funeral service will be held today, Dec. 8, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. Porter, William Ray

BOONVILLE - God saw the road was getting rough, the hill so hard to climb, he gently closed those loving eyes and whispered, "Peace be thine." William Ray Porter, better known as "Big Will," 74, of River Road, Boonville died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec. 30, 1929, in Yadkin County to the late Omer and Evelyn Porter. He was retired from Larco Construction in Winston-Salem and Y.V.E.D.D.I. of Boonville. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Larry Porter. Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Joanner Dobson Porter of the home; a daughter, Evelyn Gadberry of Mount Airy; and eight stepchildren, George, Edward, Judy, Sterling, Roland, Nina, Roger and Rayford Dobson. He is also survived by brothers Gray (Pauline) Porter and Melvin (Mattie) Porter, all of East Bend and Chester Porter of Boonville; sisters Martha (Kyrm) Phillips and Mary Dobson; a sister-in-law, Alice Porter, all of East Bend; a devoted mother-in-law, Ms. Nina Sales; friends Albert and Ella Green of Mount Airy; and a host of nieces, nephews and loving grandchildren. His funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Gentry Family Funeral Chapel in Yadkinville with the Rev. James L.E. Hunt officiating. The body will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial will follow in the New Patterson Grove Faith Church cemetery. Brown, William Murdock

GASTONIA - Mr. William Murdock Brown, devoted husband of the late Elizabeth Shaw Brown, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at Courtland Terrace in Gastonia. He recently moved to Gastonia after living 46 years in Winston-Salem. He will be remembered for his friendly smile and love for people. While delivering milk from home to home in Greensboro, he was known as "the whistling milkman." He was "Mr. Encouragement" because he was always acknowledging the good attributes in people with a smile and a pat on the back. His family and friends will miss him greatly. He leaves a legacy in his two daughters and sons-in-law, Conrad and Shirley Wilson of Welcome and Jerry and Peggy Webb of Gastonia. His adoring grandchildren are Jackie and Jimmy Draughn of Welcome, Mark and Amy Moore of Mars Hill and Emily Webb of Gastonia. His great-grandchildren looked to him as a role model. They are Jeremy and Candace Brown of Fairbanks, Alaska, Anthony and Brandon Draughn of Welcome, and Daniel Madison and Mackenzie and David Moore of Mars Hill. He was one of 12 children with only one remaining, his beloved "little sister," Mildred Bean of Fayetteville. Also remaining are his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, "Smokey" and Laura Kate Garvin of Fayetteville, and Jimmy and Daphine Shaw of Rex. He was preceded in death by Esther Thompson, Lena Brown, Allen, Claude and Lois Brown, Lula Odom and Luther, Ted, Clarence and Margaret Mathews. His love for his Lord was very evident in his service at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem and his community. He was always giving of himself, whether through Meals on Wheels, the Konnoak Lions Club or the Gideons or by volunteering at the Forsyth Health Department. He had retired from Pet Milk Co. after serving them for several decades. After his retirement, he became an avid "mall walker." He called the mall walkers his "second family." He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and now he has been made complete in his heavenly home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Gastonia, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054 or Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3627 Konnoak Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kevin Conley officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Saunders Sr., Sylvester D.

Sylvester D. Saunders Sr., 78, of 4276 Cody Drive, Winston-Salem departed this life Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at his home. He was born May 29, 1926, to Lonnie Saunders and Olamae Davis. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Saunders attended Genesis Victory Outreach Center and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer driver. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Lorene J. Saunders. He is survived by his children, Aquanette Berry, Olamae Saunders, Sandra Jordan, Helen Saunders, Esterlene (James) Bray and Sylvester Saunders Jr., all of the city; a sister, Edna Saunders; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Genesis Victory Outreach Center with Bishop Claude D. Thomas giving the eulogy. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. Scott, Marshall Vance

Mr. Marshall Vance Scott of Winston-Salem died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004. He was born Feb. 3, 1959, in Forsyth County to Zeb Vance Scott and Betty Marshall Scott. Mr. Scott lived his life in Forsyth County. He graduated as an honor student from East Forsyth High School and was a member of Unity Christian Church. Mr. Scott is survived by his wife, Corrine Blizard Scott; a stepson, Nicholas Ogburn; his parents; a sister, Janet Louise Ogburn and husband John of Walnut Cove; a number of special nieces and nephews; and his loving and devoted pet, Shaba. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Vogler's Reynolda Chapel. The Rev. Elizabeth Forrest and the Rev. Larry Neal will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday before the service at the funeral home. Warren, Lois Miles

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Lois Miles Warren, 79, of Martinsville died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at McKee-Stone Funeral Services Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, Dec. 8, at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, 306 Wren Court, Martinsville. Whitaker, Margaret Hendrix

Mrs. Margaret Hendrix Whitaker, 84, formerly of Winston-Salem passed away at Bermuda Village on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, where she had been a resident for the past two years. She was born in Davie County on Feb. 13, 1920, to Haywood and Magdeline Cornatzer Hendrix. Mrs. Whitaker was a member of Dulin United Methodist Church and had retired from Western Electric Co. with 30 years of service. Mrs. Whitaker was raised in Mocksville and moved to Winston-Salem in 1949. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Jim Frank Whitaker. Surviving are her brother. H.R. Hendrix and wife, Modene; niece Judy Ferner and husband, Jack, of Bermuda Run; great-nephew Bryant Jarvis and wife, Tammy, and great-great-nephew Bryant Joe Jarvis; niece Shelby Nichols and husband, Sam, of Bermuda Run West; great-nephews Robert Carl Nichols and Sam Nichols Jr. and great-niece Jean Ward; niece Patricia Jarvis and husband, Joe, of Clemmons; great-niece and great-nephew Julie and Jonathan Jarvis; and nephew Robin Hendrix of Atlanta. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 8, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with the Rev. Ray O'Ferrell and the Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. RICHMOND - Mrs. Ada Harrison Wright of Richmond passed Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004. She is survived locally by a brother, Mr. Robert (Nancy) Harrison, and a niece, Renee C. Harrison. Zumpano, Sylvia Ann Speas

KERNERSVILLE - Sylvia Ann Speas Zumpano, 80, of Kernersville died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Nov. 29, 1924, in Winston-Salem, daughter of Gilbert and Sally Speas. She was also preceded in death by her son, Ronald Rash. Survivors include her husband, Charles V. Zumpano; sons Mike Rash of the home and Vincent Zumpano of Susanville, Calif.; daughter Cristina Ball of Walkertown; and grandchildren Cody Northington, Kelsey Cuneo and Maygen and Kaytlynn Zumpano. Adamczak, Roger T.

Mr. Roger T. Adamczak of Winston-Salem died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at his home. He was born April 29, 1961, in Warsaw, N.Y., to the late James and Laurel Adamczak. He was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church. He is survived by his wife, Waynette S. Adamczak and his daughter, Stephanie D. Hindle of the home; a brother, Kyle Adamczak of Gainesville, N.Y.; and many close family members and numerous friends. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Clemmons Moravian Church with the Rev. Ray Burke officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. WILKESBORO - Miss Shyann Nicole Anderson, infant, daughter of Crystal Lynn Anderson, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel.

Ashburn, Mary Bruner

Ms. Mary Bruner Ashburn, 75, loving mother of 53 years, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at her home after an extended illness. She was born April 1, 1929, in Surry County to the late Dault and Ella Patterson Bruner. Ms. Ashburn was a member of First Baptist Church of Stanleyville for over 40 years and faithfully attended as long as her health permitted. Before retiring, she was an Avon representative and a nursing assistant for City Nursing for over 25 years. She is survived by a son, Terry Ashburn and wife Sandra of Rural Hall; a daughter, Teresa Paschal and husband Michael of Raleigh; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Al Bruner of Oregon; and a sister, Joyce Bruner Flippen of Texas. A private graveside service will be held today, Nov. 27, at Crestview Memorial Park with Mr. Terry Rouse officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Burns, Virginia Slaney "Ginny"

Mrs. Virginia "Ginny" Slaney Burns, 74, of 5013 Wrangler Drive died Wednesday evening, Nov. 24, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Jan. 9, 1930, in Boston, Mass., to Frank and Margaret Harnden Slaney. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Poelker. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert T. Burns of the home; two daughters, Terri and husband David Cornelius of East Bend and Pat and husband Chris Koontz of Clemmons; a son, Mike Burns of Wentworth; five grandchildren, Chad and Ryan Burns, Patrick and Robert Cornelius and Alex Koontz; and a brother, John Slaney of Melrose, Mass. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, at Holy Family Catholic Church by the Rev. Fr. Brian Cook. Burial will be in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and requests that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
