Cheatwood, Edna Brooks

TRAPHILL - Mrs. Edna Brooks Cheatwood, 99, of Round Hill Church Road, Traphill, the widow of Robert Cheatwood, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at her home. Mrs. Cheatwood was born Feb. 7, 1905, in Wilkes County to Will and Celia Pruitt Brooks. She was a member of Traphill Baptist Church. Mrs. Cheatwood is survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 27, at Traphill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jesse Miles officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. today. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Traphill Baptist Church cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 4, Traphill, NC 28685.

Clark, Willie Mae

Willie Mae Clark of 412 Barrier Road passed Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Oct. 31, 1937, to John Clark and Jessie Garris Clark. She was employed by PRG and was a member of Greater Faith Holiness Church. She attended Davidson County public schools. She was preceded in death by her mother and father. She is survived by three daughters, Melanie Anita Clark of Salisbury, Williette Jones of High Point and Marguerite Angela Clark of Lexington; two sons, John Denard Clark of Lexington and Zenovia Darnell (Tawana) Clark of Lexington; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; an aunt, Barbara Powers of Midway; a cousin, Jim Garris; and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral service will be conducted at noon today, Nov. 27, at the Gilmore Memorial Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Tony Neal. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to noon at the chapel. Burial will be in Forest Hill Memorial Park cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home Services.

Eads, Pauline Hege

LEXINGTON - Pauline Hege Eads, 50, of Lenalan Drive, Lexington, died at 8:25 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, in Forsyth Medical Center after a sudden illness. She was born April 15, 1954, in Davidson County to Paul Webster Hege and Edna Everhart Hege. A retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Intl., she was a member of Eastern Star 363. She is survived by her husband, Ronnie Wayne Eads of the home; a son, Andy Stewart Eads of the home; two sisters, Carol Jones and husband David and Patricia Hedrick and husband Darrell, all of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Annette Johnson and husband Everett of Siloam; a niece, Sarah Johnson of Siloam; and a nephew, Jason Hedrick of Lexington. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Parklawn Memorial Park with Bill Teague officiating. Burial will follow. The family will receive friends at the home, 350 Lenalan Drive, Lexington. Memorials may be directed to Good Hope United Methodist Church, 10253 Hampton Road, Lexington, NC 27295 or Masonic and Eastern Star Home, 700 S. Holden Road, Greensboro, NC 27407. Grayson, Jess Rudolph

PFAFFTOWN - Mr. Jess Rudolph Grayson, 86, of Yadkinville Road passed away at his home Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sept. 13, 1918, to Jess and Sarah Engle Grayson. Mr. Grayson retired to North Carolina in 1983. He was a skilled welder, having several pieces of his work displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. Mr. Grayson was active in life until the day of his passing. He is survived by four sons, Michael, Philip and William, all of Virginia, and John Grayson of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Mary Jane Whelan of Pennsylvania and Liz Westerberg of Pfafftown; 25 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Marcus Porter officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society, 61 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

Hall, Patricia Cromer

Mrs. Patricia Cromer Hall, 59, of Winston-Salem passed away at her home Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004. She was born Jan. 19, 1945, in Forsyth County to Rufus and Gladys Crouch Cromer. Mrs. Hall was a member of Messiah Moravian Church and had been employed by Sherwood Flower Shop. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Alicia Lynne Hall. Surviving are her husband, Jerry; a son and his wife, Richard and Lynda Hall; and three grandchildren, Alec, Andy and Ashley Hall. She is also survived by a brother, Phillip Harding Cromer of Asheville; a sister, Peggy Jean Brendle of King; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Separk Hall and Pamela Hall Nifong; and several special nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 27, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Truman Dunn officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family would like to express thanks to Dr. Thomas Grote and Dr. Sandra E. Mitchell and staff at the Forsyth Regional Cancer Center. Hines, Sarah Emma Morris

Mrs. Sarah Emma Morris Hines, 85, passed away at Arbor Acres Health Care on Friday, Nov. 26, 2004. Mrs. Hines was born on June 3, 1919, in Gastonia to William Mack Morris Sr. and Nola Clark Morris. She graduated from Gastonia High School and Gastonia Business College, was a member of the Gastonia Spinsters Club and belonged to Beta Nu Chapter of Sigma Phi Sorority, of which she was president and selected member of the year. Before joining the WAVES, she worked for A.M. Smyre Manufacturing Co. of Gastonia. After World War II, she lived in Greensboro, where she was a member of West Market Street United Methodist Church and was employed by Mass Mutual Insurance Co. until retirement. Mrs. Hines was predeceased by her husband, Winstead Hines of Greensboro; her parents; and her sister, Carolyn Morris Roberts and brother-in-law Harold L. Roberts. She is survived by her brother, William Mack Morris Jr. and his wife, Elsie L. Morris; a niece, Susan Roberts Lloyd-Graham and her husband Hillis and Susan's two children, Victoria Faulkner Lloyd and Hunter Morris Roberts Lloyd, all of Washington, D.C.; her niece, Carolyn Ann Roberts of Charlotte; her nephew, Stephen Morris Roberts of Wilmington; two stepnieces, Gail Lybrook Hobbs and her husband David and Leesa Lybrook Goodson and her husband Tom; her sister-in-law, Louise Hines; nieces Nancy Hines, Dorothy Webb, Janet White and Harriett and Susan Holderness; and a nephew, Andy Hines. Sarah's family would like to thank Jacqueline Redd for being a special friend to Sarah. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Arbor Acres Fellowship Hall with a visitation following. The interment will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, at Forest Lawn cemetery in Greensboro. Mayfield, Thomas J. Locke "Tommy"

Thomas "Tommy" J. Locke Mayfield, 34, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Ponte Vedra, Fla., died unexpectedly Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. Tommy was born in Galveston, Texas, and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. He is survived by his parents, Tom and Janie Mayfield of Winston-Salem; a grandmother, Louise H. Campbell of Winston-Salem; a sister, Dr. Liz Arnold and her husband David and their children Will, Cameron and Cullen Arnold, all of Winston-Salem; aunt and uncle Martha and Michael McCormack of Arlington, Va.; aunt and uncle Joanna Mitchell and Dr. Steve Mitchell of Harrisburg, Pa.; aunt Wynona Mayfield of Dover, Alaska; and several cousins and extended family members. He will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Nov. 27, at First Assembly of God in Winston-Salem with Pastor Carl Miller officiating. Phillips, Beatrice Louis

JONESVILLE - Mrs. Beatrice Louis Phillips, 62, of 4520 Robbins Road, Jonesville, passed away Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Beatrice was born in Ashe County on Nov. 30, 1941, to Clyde and Iva Keys Vannoy. She was preceded in death by her father and two brothers. She is survived by her husband, Alton Phillips of the home; two children, Larry Wayne (Jane) Hall of Austin and Dina (Gene) Wilson of State Road; her mother, Iva Keys Vannoy of Ronda; four grandchildren, Jaye Hall, Jessica Abdou, Heather Evans and Stacey Wilson; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Hall and Bridgette Evans; two sisters; a brother; and a host of loving nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, by the Rev. Don Hudson at Fall Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Jonesville. The Phillips family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday prior to the service at Johnson Funeral Home. Johnson Funeral Home of Elkin is assisting the family.

Ross, Fred Matthew

HARMONY - Mr. Fred Matthew Ross, 70, of 153 Dogwood Forest Loop, Harmony, beloved husband and father, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. He was born in Surry County on Sept. 17, 1934, and was a son of the late Tyra Ross and Carrie Shaffner Ross. He was retired from Yadkin Valley Telephone Membership Corp. and attended Clarksbury United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and enjoyed golf, gardening and family. He was an active member of the North Iredell Lions Club and American Legion Post 0113. He was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters. On Dec. 11, 1977, he married the former Tommie Ann Shoemaker, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Paula Ross Cooke and her husband, Andy of Yadkinville. The funeral service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Clarksbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Boliek officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Full military rites will be presented at the graveside by VFW Post 2031, Harold Littlefield Chapter 68 of the DAV and American Legion Posts 217 and 65, all of Statesville. The family will assemble at the residence of the deceased and will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m. today, Nov. 27, at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. Sands, Rachel Lawson

SANDY RIDGE - Mrs. Rachel Lawson Sands, 83, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Walnut Cove Healthcare Center. She was born in Stokes County to Luther and Nannie Collins Lawson. She was a member of Willow Oak Baptist Church and enjoyed traveling to the coast where she liked to fish. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. Van Sands, on Feb. 3, 1993; two sisters, Leonnie Wagner and Beatrice Shelton; and three brothers, James Lawson, Virgel Lawson and Clyde Lawson. Surviving are two sons, Gerry Sands and Roger (Linda) Sands; her grandson, Kevin Sands; and six sisters, Mattie Justice, Eveline Sands, Annie Mae Young, Fannie Kay Hicks, Louise Sizemore and Lorene Gann. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Sunday, Nov. 28, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dan Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Walnut Cove cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, Nov. 27, at the funeral home and other times at the home of Roger and Linda Sands.

Spainhour, H. Alton

Mr. H. Alton Spainhour, 92, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Born in Forsyth County on Dec. 10, 1911, he was the son of the late Dalton and Eva Spainhour. He was a member of Ardmore Moravian Church and was a retiree from Duke Power Co. Mr. Spainhour is survived by his wife of 70 years, Evelyn B. Spainhour; a son, Ronald Spainhour of New York City; and a daughter, Carolyn Spainhour of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Kevin Frack and the Rev. Charles Fishel officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today, Nov. 27, at the funeral home. Spaugh, Brantley "Leon"

KING - Mr. Brantley "Leon" Spaugh, 53, passed away Friday, Nov. 26, 2004. He was born May 21, 1951, in Forsyth County to the late Worth and Margaret Saylor Spaugh. He was a member of Old Fashion Baptist Church in Stanleyville but more recently had been attending Faith Friends Chapel in King. He was the owner of Spaugh Electric Co. and had been employed at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for the past 23 years. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Spaugh of the home; two sons, Rusty B. Spaugh and Anthony S. (Chrystal) Spaugh, both of King; two grandchildren, Emily Spaugh and Allison Spaugh; a brother, Worth (Betty) Spaugh of Pfafftown; and two nieces and nephews. Leon was blessed with two devoted friends, Michele Fleming and Kristi Martin. He was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Keaton. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at the Pfafftown Christian Church cemetery with Pastor Gilmer Cox officiating. There will be no family visitation. The public may pay their respects from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Slate Funeral Home in King. Staley, Mary Wiles

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Mary Wiles Staley, 92, of Brinegar Road, North Wilkesboro, widow of Charles Staley, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Staley was born Aug. 26, 1912, to Isaac Sylvester and Dolly Myers Wiles. Mrs. Staley is survived by two daughters, Frances Staley Brinegar and Ann Staley Gorciak, both of North Wilkesboro; a son, Charles Staley Jr. and his wife Melissa of Sanford; two sisters, Daisey Roselle of North Wilkesboro and Rosanelle Catapano of Cape Coral, Fla.; six grandchildren, Michael and April Brinegar of North Wilkesboro, Elizabeth and Larkin Parks of Yardley, Pa., Melissa and Robert Bray and Rebecca Grace Staley, all of Sanford, Duke and Shelly Gorciak of North Wilkesboro and Glenda Hall of Jonesville; and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Charles Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Wilkesboro Presbyterian Chapel cemetery. Stone, Cleo Joyce

PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Cleo Joyce Stone, 93, of 2114 Pilot Westfield Road, Pilot Mountain, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at Village Care of King. She was born Jan. 29, 1911, in Stokes County to the late Floyd Perrin Joyce and Maude Jessup Joyce. Mrs. Stone was a homemaker and a member of Brim's Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Faye Stone Stafford of Winston-Salem; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sharon Stone of Pilot Mountain; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Estelle and Clarence Arrington of High Point. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Stone was preceded in death by her husband, Caleb Monroe Stone; a daughter, Kay Loyce Stone; a sister, Nina Billings; and brothers Tom and the Rev. Jack Joyce. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Brim's Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Joel Stephens, with interment to follow at Brim's Grove Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Stone will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 27, at Howell Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain. Surratt, Wade Talmadge

Mr. Wade Talmadge Surratt, 80, of Winston-Salem died at his home on Friday, Nov. 26, 2004. Mr. Surratt was born in Winston-Salem on May 21, 1924, to Wade Talmadge Surratt Sr. and Julia Efird Surratt. He was a graduate of Reynolds High School. After serving in World War II in Italy, he attended UNC at Chapel Hill and graduated with a degree in business administration. Mr. Surratt was a charter member of Knollwood Baptist Church. After a long career with Henley Paper Co., he retired. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, spending time at the coast, playing with his grandchildren and working in his yard. Mr. Surratt is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Middleton Surratt; his daughter, Julie S. Taylor and husband Maxwell; a son, William Derrick Surratt and wife Dara; four grandchildren, Whit and Ben Taylor and Emily and Caroline Surratt; and a brother, John Richardson Surratt and wife Stella. There will be a memorial service at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Knollwood Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Chris Chapman and Dr. Jack Noffsinger. The family will receive friends following the graveside service at the church. Memorial gifts may be made to Knollwood Baptist Church, 330 Knollwood St., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

Bostic III, William Chiveous

GALAX, Va. - William Chiveous Bostic III died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at his home in Galax. He was born July 2, 1930, in Forest City, N.C., and attained his Eagle Scout status as a teenager in Forest City. Dr. Bostic received his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1952 and his medical degree at Harvard University, cum laude, in 1958. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1954. Dr. Bostic practiced medicine as an orthopedic surgeon in Winston-Salem, N.C., from 1964 to 1994 and was a founding partner in Salem Orthopedics, now Orthopedic Specialists of the Carolinas. He also practiced in Galax for the last four years at Corilian Medical Associates. Dr. Bostic is survived by his wife of 11 years, Cynthia Guittierez; five children, Elizabeth, Brooke, Graham and Jason Bostic and Stacia Gregory; nine grandchildren; and a brother, Thad S. Bostic of Deland, Fla. A reception of remembrance will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel in Winston-Salem, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Cheek Jr., Julius Matthews

Mr. Julius Matthews Cheek Jr., 85, of 3461 Cumberland Road passed away early Monday morning, Nov. 8, 2004, at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury after an extended illness. He was born June 24, 1919, in Forsyth County to Julius Matthews and Maggie Cheek. He retired from AT&T after 31 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a Gold Star member of First Baptist Church and superintendent of the Sunday school for many years. He was formerly an active member of the Prince Hall Masons Salem Lodge 139 and a past Master of the lodge. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and two sisters. He is survived by his loving wife, Claudine B. Cheek; three brothers, Calvin and James of Winston-Salem and Francis Cheek of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Bernice and Rachel of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Barbara Ann Clemmons and Darlene C. (Sgt. Clark) Stephenson of Winston-Salem; a son, Darrell L. Cheek of Smyrna, Ga.; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. A service of memory will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at First Baptist Church, 700 N. Highland Ave., with the Rev. Glenn Pettiford officiating. (Hooper)

Ford Sr., Robert Virgil

NORTH WILKESBORO - Robert Virgil Ford Sr., 84, of North Wilkesboro died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at the Brian Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Ford was born Dec. 14, 1919, in Winston-Salem, a son of Romulus Virgil Ford and Lelia Mae Woodward Ford. He lived in North Wilkesboro from age 5 to 14, then moved to Winston-Salem, where he graduated from Reynolds High School. He attended N.C. State University, majoring in aeronautical engineering. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and completed pilot training before the onset of World War II. His was one of the first Air Corps units to deploy overseas, where he flew B25s for Gen. Claire Chennault out of Kunming, China. While in China, he earned the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served afterward in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. His career entailed flight testing for the Federal Aviation Agency. In addition, he was chief test pilot for Hamburger Flugzeugbau in Hamburg, Germany, and also for Israeli Aircraft Industries in Tel Aviv, Israel. He was a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Spach Ford; children Robert Ford Jr. and wife Carol, Lucy Findlay and husband George, William Ford and wife Judy, Thom Ford and John Ford and wife Sylvia; sisters Louise Brewer, Ruth Philpott and Mildred Curran; grandchildren Lisa Merrill, Christopher Findlay, Adam Ford, Robert Ford, Elizabeth Ford, Robert Ford III, William Ford, Emily Ford, Alex Ford and Annie Ford; two great-grandchildren; and a first cousin and very good friend, John Woodward. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro, with Dr. Sydnor Thompson officiating. Entombment will follow at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Arlington National cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of First United Methodist Church, 401 Sixth St., North Wilkesboro, NC 28659; or to the charity of the donor's choice. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
