NORTH WILKESBORO - Ms. Rhoda Patricia Hamilton, 61, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel in Elkin.

Kirkman, Ruth Edwards

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Ruth Edwards Kirkman, 82, of 2183 Westfield Road, Mount Airy, widow of Mr. Orby Marion Kirkman, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Village Care in King. Mrs. Kirkman was born Feb. 4, 1922, in Surry County to Elbert and Hassie Midkiff Edwards. She was a retired registered nurse from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was a member of Bannertown Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Leslie and Randy Eldridge of Dobson, Marian and Gary O'Neal of Winston-Salem, Laura and David Neal of McRae, Ga., and Patricia Snow of Rural Hall; and six grandchildren, Chris Reynolds, Amanda Cox, Mary Beth Hand, Bryan Reynolds, Rusty Lee and Danny Lee. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Kirkman was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Hill; and three brothers, John Edwards, Robert Edwards and Joe Bill Edwards. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Van Brindle, with burial to follow in the Indian Grove Family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. Friday until time for the service at Moody Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Surry County Friends of Seniors, Chore/Respite Program, 1218 State St., Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Meals On Wheels, 215 Jones School Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family wishes to thank the staff at Village Care for all the love, care and kindness shown to our mother.

Landreth, Barbara Ann Ashley

BROWNS SUMMIT - Mrs. Barbara Ann Ashley Landreth, 64, of Browns Summit died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Landreth, along with her husband, owned and operated Jay's Trailer Repair. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Mrs. Landreth is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, J.D. Landreth of the home; her children, Patsy Masters and fiance, Clay Greene, of Greensboro, Carla (Tim) Currie of Browns Summit, Lisa (James) Michael of Wilmington and James Landreth Jr. of the home; a sister, Faye Howard of Browns Summit; her three precious grandchildren, Krysty Pierce, Richard Masters and Hannah Michael; and a special niece, Vickie Handy of Randleman. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at George Brothers Funeral Service. The burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, Nov. 11, at the funeral home. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the ICU and Coronary Unit nurses at Moses Cone Hospital for the loving care given to Mrs. Landreth. Weatherspoon, Tommye Jean

THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Tommye Jean Weatherspoon, 56, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home.

Brannock, Ottolene Lucille Eastridge

ADVANCE - Mrs. Ottolene Lucille Eastridge Brannock, 79, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004. She was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Grayson County, Va., to Fred and Rhoda Carico Eastridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Spurgeon Lee Brannock; a son, Robert Lee Brannock; and a great-granddaughter, Bethany. Surviving are five children, Ray (Linda) Brannock of Mocksville, James (Jean) Brannock of Clemmons, Ricky (Beverly) Brannock of Walkertown, Sue (John) Roberson of Mocksville and Janice (John) Solomon of Advance; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Brannock, of Winston-Salem; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Snow Hill Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Darrell Cox officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 today at Slate Funeral Home in King.

Cooper, Martha Faydene Laughlin

LEXINGTON - Martha Faydene Laughlin Cooper, 88, died Saturday. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Jersey Baptist Church. Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dillard, Rev. Dean Archel

NORTH WILKESBORO - The Rev. Dean Archel Dillard, 80, of Sparta Road died Saturday, August 7, 2004, at his home. The Rev. Dillard was born in Wilkes County, March 21, 1924, to the Rev. Monroe and Molly Reynolds Dillard. He was a member of Baptist Home Baptist Church. The Rev. Dillard was a retired Baptist minister. He pastored churches in Wilkes, Alexander, and Yadkin Counties during his 50 years in the ministry. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142, serving as chaplain of the Honor Guard. The Rev. Dillard is survived by his wife, Reba Adams Dillard, of the home; a daughter, Karen Davidson, of Salisbury; a son, Billy Dean Dillard, of North Wilkesboro; a sister, Shirley Carter, of Roaring River; a brother, Gwyn Dillard, of Asheboro; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Baptist Home Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrell Tate, the Rev. Stanley Frye and the Rev. Van Wyatt officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive from 6:30 to 8:30 today at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Baptist Home Baptist Church Building Fund, 2362 Sparta Road, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659. Hewitt, Robert "David"

NEWTON - Mr. Robert "David" Hewitt, 76, of North Oliver's Cross Road, passed away Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at Hospice of Catawba Valley in Newton. Born March 1, 1928, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Fred Lee Sr. and Georgia Emma Beam Hewitt. He was a member of Mount Ruhama Baptist Church in Maiden. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred L. Hewitt Jr. and William B. Hewitt; and a sister, Marguerite Hewitt Manuel. He is survived by his wife, Helen Sigmon Hewitt, of the home; a son, Ronald D. Hewitt, of Winston-Salem; a brother, Joseph Larry Hewitt, of Newton; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Mount Ruhama Baptist Church in Maiden with the Rev. Larry Burns officiating. Members of his Sunday school class will be serving as honorary pallbearers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday in the church fellowship hall following the service. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658. Holcomb, Joy T.

Mrs. Joy T. Holcomb, 64, wife of William H. "Bill" Holcomb, died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 7, 2003, at her home. She was born March 29, 1940. Surviving besides her husband Bill of the home are her son, William Gregory Holcomb; two daughters, Mrs. Andra "Ann" Johnson and Mrs. Kristie Smith; and five grandchildren, Patrick and Elaina Holcomb, Amy and Amanda Johnson, and Mikayla Smith. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wallburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Morris S. Hollifield officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 today at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home in Wallburg. Mabe, Vera Tilley

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Vera Tilley Mabe, 73, of 135 Adams St. died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at her home. Mrs. Mabe was born in Rockingham County, a daughter of the late Jess and Minnie Bullins Tilley and was a member of the Victory Ministers Church in Walnut Cove. Surviving are her husband, Hobert Mabe, of the home; two daughters, Patsy Wright of Thomasville and Debra Callahan and husband, Kenny, of Kernersville; three sons, Clarence (Cindy) Mabe of Thomasville, Allan (Tabitha) Mabe of Kernersville and Randy (Janet) Mabe of Augusta, Ga.; a sister, Doray (Jimmy) Groce, of Stokesdale; four brothers, J.C. Tilley, Eddie Tilley and Jimmy Ray Tilley, all of Reidsville, Raymond (Betsy) Tilley of Reidsville; 18 grandchildren including David Scott Mitchell, Joanie Mitchell, Juck, Jerry, Michael Paul, Johnathan, Casey, Felicia, Danielle, Joshua and two special grandchildren, Shanice Mabe and "Buba" Allan Wayne Mabe II; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hayworth Miller Cain Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Mount Gur cemetery. Parrish, Lissie Thelma Gardner

Mrs. Lissie Thelma Gardner Parrish, 95, a resident for most of her life of the Gumtree Community in Davidson County, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at her home. She was born July 10, 1909, in Davidson County to Rufus Franklin Gardner and Ollie Stewart Gardner, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Parrish, on March 9, 1972, as well as three brothers and two sisters. She was a retired operator for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 46 years and three months of service. She was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Reformed United Church of Christ. Surviving are two nieces who were like daughters, Mildred McIntyre of the home and Starr Lawson of Winston-Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Bethlehem Reformed United Church of Christ cemetery with the Rev. Aaron Long officiating. Mrs. Parrish will remain at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, 10301 N N.C. Hwy. 109, Wallburg Chapel until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the graveside service. The family will be at the funeral home from 6 to 8 today and other times at the residence.

Pratt, Patricia Ann Dockery

Patricia Ann Dockery Pratt, affectionately known as "Plum," 711 Whitford Place, Winston-Salem, passed away Aug. 4, 2004, after a brief illness at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Pratt was born Jan. 20, 1951, in Hamlet to Jake and Beatrice Dockery. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 21 years, Andrew "Bill" Pratt. Surviving are two sisters, Katrina Dockery and Linda (Gary Warren) Dockery, all of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Jim (Melissa) Dockery, Robert (Shirley) Dockery, Anthony Dockery and Stanley (Lula) Dockery; four loving aunts, Lucretia Edwards, Louise Blache' and Betty Whiteside, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Evelyn Moore of Winston-Salem; three uncles, Eddie McIntyre of West Memphis, Ark., Walter McIntyre of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Jimmy Thacker of Winston-Salem; two great-aunts, Ardelia Morrison of Winston-Salem and Mary Wideman of Hamlet; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The funeral service for Mrs. Pratt will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at New Light Missionary Baptist Church, 1535 E. 15th St., Winston-Salem, with the Rev. Sam PL Hickerson officiating. Shell, Lula Mae

Lula Mae Shell, 71, of 2604 Fondly Road departed this life Aug. 6, 2004. She was the daughter of Fernan and Vida Shell, who preceded her in death. She was born Dec. 24, 1932, in Forsyth County. Leaving to mourn are two daughters, Deborah (Gerald) Samuels and Pamela Shell, all of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at John Wesley AME Zion Church. The wake will be at 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery. Beasley's Funeral and Cremation of Winston-Salem is in charge of the arrangements.

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Sidney Snow Smith, 73, died Saturday. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

Smith, Thelma Moore

Mrs. Thelma Moore Smith, 80, formerly of 720 Hertford Road died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at the Elms at Tanglewood in Clemmons. Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 21, 1923, in Rockingham County, the daughter of Mosby Raine Moore and Kate Turner Moore. She was the wife of the late Jack J. Smith, who passed away May 10, 2001. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Her life and Christian faith were reflected through her love for her family, church and friends. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at First Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. David Hughes. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Surviving are her four children, Pamela S. Compton of Clemmons, Brad Smith and wife Jerri, also of Clemmons, Lynne S. Marschke and husband Keith of San Diego, Calif. and Marc J. Smith and wife Pamela of Lewisville; and his seven grandchildren, Courtney and Blair Smith of Clemmons, Jonathan A. Truitt, Emmer Lee Jordan

Mrs. Emmer Lee Jordan Truitt, 91, a resident of 2506 Old Thomasville Road, died late Saturday evening, Aug. 7, 2004, at her home. Born in Forsyth County Jan. 4, 1913, to William Gurley and Tury Livengood Jordan, she had made this area her home her entire life. She was retired from Anvil Brand Jeans and was an active member of Canaan United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted, where she was in the Willing Workers Class and the United Methodist Women. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Fannie Brown of the home; a son, Robert "Pete" Truitt and wife Rosalie of Winston-Salem; a sister, Essie Walker of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Edna Jordan of Wallburg; six grandchildren, Lee Brown, Roberta Clodfelter, Jerry Truitt, Paul Truitt, Connie Wray and Donna Truitt; six great-grandchildren, Max Truitt, Heather Truitt, Bobbie Jo Moore, Terri Hardison, Derek Clodfelter and Steven Clodfelter; and three great-great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Canaan United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dana Wooten officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Tuttle, J.S. "Jaybird"

KING - Mr. J.S. "Jaybird" Tuttle, 74, of Kelsey Drive, died Sunday morning at his home. He was born Dec. 17, 1929, in Forsyth County to Jasper Lester and Adelia Florence Moser Tuttle. Mr. Tuttle was retired from Cook's Warehouse and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who loved to play golf and fish. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Roby and Otis Tuttle; a stepson, Jackie Fulp; and a stepgrandson, Justin Mitchell. Survivors include his wife, Rachel Tuttle of the home; two daughters, Sandra Shaw (Gary) of King and Teresa Ingram (Alvin) of Newland; a son, Wayne Tuttle and friend Diane Day of Austin; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Bethel Whicker; stepchildren Junior Fulp, Jimmy Fulp, Johnny Fulp, Susie Rogers, Joan Saunders, Helen Mitchell and Vickie Benge; 10 stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Slate Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Richard Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Faith Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Watlington, Lucinda Bitting

Mrs. Lucinda Bitting Watlington, 89, formerly of 801 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Apartment 11D, was born Oct. 18, 1914, to the late Bud and Cora Clemmons Bitting in Winston-Salem. She was a former employee of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County public schools and a member of Diggs Memorial United Holy Church, where she was Mother of the Church and formerly served on the choir and usher board. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Watlington was preceded in death by her husband, James Watlington Sr., and a son, William Bitting. Her earthly pilgrimage attained finality on Saturday evening, Aug. 7, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Survivors include a son, James (Mary) Watlington Jr. of Winston-Salem; 19 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carrie Ellis, Cora White and Grace (Sam) Stinson, all of Winston-Salem; a brother, Robert Bitting, of Philadelphia, Pa.; and other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Diggs Memorial United Holy Church with Elder Jerry Powell officiating. Interment will follow at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday 30 minutes prior to the hour of the service at the church and other times they may be contacted at the home of a granddaughter, Sabina Hopkins, 515 Hartman St. (Hooper)

Woods, Curtis Lee

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Curtis Lee Woods, 77, of Finley Avenue, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at his home. Mr. Woods was born in Wilkes County, Aug. 4, 1927, to Charley William and Nelia Elizabeth Wood Woods. He was the poet laureate of Wilkes County. Mr. Woods is survived by his wife of 56 years, Edith Byrd Woods of the home; a daughter, Libby Triplett of North Wilkesboro; two sons, Dennis Woods of North Wilkesboro and Dalton Woods of Carrolton, Texas; three sisters, Esta Zimmerman of Stuart, Va., Mrs. Efner (Ila) Wiles of North Wilkesboro and Mary Litchfield of Winston Salem; nine grandchildren, Shari Prestipino, Sally Anderson, April Taylor, Dana Combs, Laura Shepherd, Tara Shumate, Sonny Triplett, Brian Triplett, and Dereck Edwards; 11 great-grandsons; and seven great-granddaughters. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel. Burial with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be at Bethany Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive from 6:30 to 8:30 today at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro.

Chamble, Archbishop Edward Lee Madison

Archbishop Edward Lee Madison Chamble departed to join his Savior Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of Winston-Salem and resided in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was lovingly known as "Unkie" to family and friends and respectfully acknowledged as Bishop by his church family. Bishop Chamble was born to Mrs. Jessie C. Lewis. Bishop Chamble graduated from Atkins High School, class of 1954, and completed his graduate and post-graduate studies at New York University, Hunter College, University of Metaphysics and the University College Seminary. Bishop Chamble was a dedicated educator in the New York Public School System for 33 years. Bishop Chamble was the founder and pastor of Sacred Heart Metaphysical Church of Faith, Inc., where he devoted 42 years to loving service until his departure. Also until his passing, Bishop Chamble was the presiding archbishop of the Metaphysical Churches of Faith, Inc. in Winston-Salem, Alpha & Omega Church of High Point, St. Anthony's Church of Thomasville, St. Anthony's Center of Lancaster, S.C., Mount Calvary Church of Brooklyn, N.Y., and was affiliated with Holy Divine Church, One Lord One Faith One Baptism Church, Little Zion Church and Universal Truth Church. Bishop Chamble's organizational affiliations included The A&ASR Masons, Rosicrucian Order, AMORC - FRC, Worshipful Master of Alpha and Omega Lodge, Patron of Zion Patron's Council-Order of the Eastern Star and Worthy Patron of Alpha & Omega Chapter 815. Bishop Chamble was actively involved for many years with these community service organizations: NAACP, Parent and Community Drug Awareness, The Association of Black Educators of New York, Youth and Congregations in Partnership and Brooklyn District Attorney Mentoring Program. Bishop Chamble leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted sister, Verna (Thurmond Sr.) Simpson of Winston-Salem; three nephews, Thurmond, Jr. and Travis Simpson of Winston-Salem and Terron (Melissa) Simpson of Raleigh; and three great-nephews, Thurmond III and Torin Simpson of Winston-Salem and Terron Simpson Jr. of Raleigh. Additional loving family members include three devoted cousins, Thelma Tindal and Mamie Stroud of Winston-Salem and James Chamble of Raleigh; a faithful godsister, Almeta Willis of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a host of cousins, godchildren, friends and church family. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at Hanes Memorial CME Church, 819 N. Highland Ave., with Elder John Huntley Jr. officiating. Chapman, Peter Francis

Peter Francis Chapman, 76, passed away Wednesday morning, Aug. 4, 2004, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital after a long illness. The son of Frances L. and Maurice P. Chapman, Peter was born Aug. 7, 1927, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He spent his early years in Chicago, Ill., where he graduated from Lake View High School and the University of Chicago. While a physicist at the University of Chicago, he worked at Argonne National Laboratories on research associated with the first atomic bomb. After time spent working for the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Peter became a successful actuary. He was a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He lectured and served on committees of both organizations. In 1992, he retired from Booke & Co. and co-founded the Chapfield Corp. He was president of Chapfield at the time of his death. Peter was an amateur Civil War historian, a dog lover, an avid reader and a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. He traveled extensively throughout his life, including many times to Scotland, which was his father's ancestral home. He is survived by Pauline, his loving wife and partner of 53 years. He is also survived by his children, Gordon and Diana of Fort Lee, N.J., David and Kathy of Concord, Mass., Paul of London, England, Lynne of Austin, Texas, and Brian and Carolyn of Chicago, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Thomas, Matthew, Sam and Emma. He also leaves behind a wealth of friends around the world and here in Winston-Salem. A private service will be held Friday, Aug. 6, for family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice or the Forsyth Medical Center Foundation.

Cox, Robert Bruce

LAUREL SPRINGS - Robert Bruce Cox, 94, of Laurel Springs died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the Segraves Care Center in Jefferson after several months of declining health. Mr. Cox was born July 19, 1910, in Laurel Springs to John Ander and Vertie Woodie Cox. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vergie Liddle Cox; and two daughters, Jewel Cox Baldwin and Louise Cox. Mr. Cox is survived by a son, John C. Cox of Baltimore, Md.; a special friend, Eula Hauser of Sparta; a special niece, Louise Liddle Hash of Laurel Springs; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Reeves Jones will officiate. Burial will follow in the Transou United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening, Aug. 5, at the funeral home. Food and flowers are appreciated, and memorials may be made to the Scottville Baptist Church, 6164 NC Hwy 88 E., Laurel Springs, NC 28644 or the Transou United Methodist Church, 422 Nathans Creek School Road, Crumpler, NC 28617. The family will meet at the home of his niece, Louise Hash in Laurel Springs. Badger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
