BROCK
YADKINVILLE -- Mr. Robert Henry "R.H." Brock, 77, a most - loving father and grandfather , of Brock Road, passed away Monday, Aug. 14, 2000 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Dec. 3, 1922 in Johnson County to Nedham and Mary Mat Brock. Mr. Brock was retired from Western Electric and had worked for Budd Security for two years. He was of the Holiness faith and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Gray Brock , in 1999. Surviving are his wife, Alma Poindexter Brock of the home ; her children, Darlene and the late Andrew Cummmings of Mooresville, Frances (Kirk W.) Cleary of Advance, Linda (David) Smith of Yadkinville; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a foster son, William Poindexter; and a daughter-in-law, Gladys Brock. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Jimmy Mahan and the Rev. Gorrell Inscore. Burial will follow in the Union Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on N.C. 601 North in Yadkinville.

CARROLL
KING -- Mrs. Ruth Bennett Carroll, 83, of 1099 Old Highway 52 died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a brief illness. She was born in Stokes County on Sept. 14, 1916, to the late Walter and Effie Tuttle Bennett. She was a graduate of King High School class of 1937 and had worked at both Hanes Knitting Co. and AT&T retiring in 1984. She was an active member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in King for 57 years. Mrs. Carroll rejoiced in her gardening, her home and her family. Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Robert G. Carroll of the home; a daughter, Cecilia C. Overby of King; two granddaughters, Kalista Browder and Valerie Wooten and husband Lee of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Chad Browder of Winston-Salem and Dustin Overby of King; two great-grandsons, Zachary and Hunter Wooten of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Ruby Kiser and Eunice Newsome of King and Reba Flynt and husband Drexal of Germanton; and many special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at Mount Olive Baptist Church on Highway 66 in King by the Rev. Yates Wilkinson and the Rev. Jerry Bensfield. Mrs. Carroll will be taken to the church at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and other times at the home on Old Highway 52. Memorials may be made to Mount Olive Baptist Church, 5413 NC 66 S., King, NC 27021. Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel is assisting the Carroll family with the arrangements.

CHOATE
MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Mr. Sabert G. Choate, 85, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Tandum Healthcare in Melbourne, Fla. Mr. Choate was born in Sparta on April 1, 1915, to the late Greeley S. and Florence E. McBride Choate . He was a retired salesperson from Brown, Rogers, Dixon Hardware and moved to Brevard County, Fla., in 1976. He was a member of the Winston-Salem Masonic Lodge No. 167 and was a past deacon at Sherwood ParkBaptist Church in Melbourne, Fla. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Arneda Weddle Choate; a daughter, Flossie Cline Goings of Cana, Va.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roy Choate of North Wilkesboro. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Richard L. Parker Sr., the pastor of Sherwood Park Baptist Church, Melbourne, Fla. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park with Masonic Graveside rites conducted by Masonic Lodge No. 167. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. before the service. Memorials in his honor may be sent to the Sherwood Park Baptist Church, 2676 Post Road, Melbourne, FL 32935.

CLARK
God answered the cry of His faithful servant and dispatched His heavenly angels on the evening of Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at carry His child on home. Pastor Emory Lee Clark Sr., 90, of 2133 E. 12th St. was born to the late Fletcher and Emma Clark of Forsyth County. He was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem and attended Winston-Salem Forsyth County Public Schools. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. at age 55 to devote himself completely to the ministry. He was married to the late Dora King Clark in 1935, who preceded him in death in 1961. From that union there were two sons. He later married Euther Mae Smith in 1962, who also preceded him in death in 1999. Pastor Clark was also preceded in death by a son, James C. Spann of New York City; and a grandson, Gerald Clark of Winston-Salem. During his ministry he served as pastor of Chinquapin Baptist Church in Mocksville, Forbush Baptist Church in Huntsville and assistant pastor of Union Chapel Baptist Church in Winston-Salem until the latter part of 1945. In Dec. 1947 he was called to pastor Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where he served until the time of his death. He leaves to cherish his memory a son, the Rev. Emory L. Clark Jr. (Irene) of Durham; two daughters, Gloria Virginia Clark and Carolyn Linda Acker both of Winston-Salem; two brothers, the Rev. Wilbur P. Clark and Frank Clark (Rosetta) both of Winston-Salem; two very devoted grandsons, Elder Johnny Ray Spann (Judy) of Pittsboro and Elder Victor D. Clark (Cynthia) of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Hazel Smith of Mullins, S.C.; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Smith and Cleve Smith, both of Mullins; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; devoted caregivers Deacon Willie Johnson, Deacon Robert Jackson, Mitchell Macbeth and Deacon Charles and Connie Fletcher and family; and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, other relatives, extended family and many friends. Family visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1711 Claremont Ave. Homegoing services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16 at the Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. J.R. Samuels officiating. Interment will be at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. (RUSSELL)

FULP
Mrs. Essie Victoria Fulp, 95, of 3877 Leo St. died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 21, 1904, in Forsyth County to Pleasant and Mary Fulk Kiger. Mrs. Fulp was a member of Woodland Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mason Fulp; three sisters, Bessie Maxey, Fannie Rushing and Hazel Snow; and three brothers, Jess Kiger, Bill Kiger and Ralph Kiger. She is survived by a sister, Ethel Parrish of Kernersville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Tim Gammons. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

HAWKINS
RURAL HALL -- Mr. L.B. Hawkins Jr., 69, of 2062 Emorywood Road died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after four months of declining health. Mr. Hawkins was born in Stokes County on Aug. 19, 1930, the son of the late Lessell B. Hawkins Sr. and Ethel Priddy Hawkins. He was a member of Old Orchard Primitive Baptist Church. He had retired from the Veterans Administration, with 31 years of service, where he was a loan-guarantee officer. He then worked for seven years in the medical records department at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Margaret Carter Hawkins of the home; a daughter, Kathy H. Meenach of Rural Hall; a grandson, Robert B. Meenach of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Janie H. Joyce of Madison and Linda H. Nelson and husband Bobby of Sandy Ridge; six nieces; and five nephews. Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel H. Joyce. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall, with Elder Scotty Marshall and Elder Rodney Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in Rural Hall Memorial Park. The Hawkins family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home and other times at the daughter's home, 796 Sommerdale Court W., Rural Hall. HAWKINS
Mrs. Vivian Dawn Hawkins of Winston-Salem passed away Aug. 12, 2000. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at Saint's Home United Methodist Church, 1390 Thurmond St. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. She is survived by her husband, David Hawkins; four children, Mitchell (Walteria), John (Chantale), James and Millicent Hawkins; three grandsons; her mother, Mrs. Vera Clark; two sisters, Bernice Bailey and Marilynne Lewis; a brother, Mitchell Alexander all of the city; two aunts, Grace Houghton and Edna Scott; and several nieces, nephews, other family member and friends. HUNTER
Mrs. Onedia Hardesty Hunter, 85, formerly of Emma Avenue and Cedar Cove Lane, Winston-Salem, died early Sunday morning, Aug. 13, 2000, at the Brian Center. She was born May 15, 1915, in Greene County, Ind., to Nasby Oliver and Emily Blanchard Hardesty. Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Hardesty of Denver, Colo. Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Kenneth Hunter of the Brian Center; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sarah Hunter of Winston-Salem; their four children, Robin (Patrick) Donnelly, Ronald (Marcy) Hunter, Jennifer Johnston and David (Jennifer) Johnston; a daughter and son-in-law, Merletta and Dave Roberts of Yakima, Wash.; their two children, Camille and Heather Roberts; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Kaye Hunter of Winston-Salem; their three children, Tiffany, Kristel and Ryan Hunter; and a great-grandson, Christopher Hunter. Mrs. Hunter lived her faith and was always active in her local church, most recently Konnoak Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Konnoak Baptist Church by Dr. Gary McCullough. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Konnoak Baptist Church, 400 Mclean Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27127. JOYCE
WALKERTOWN -- Mr. Louis Henry Joyce, 59, of 2731 Martin St. died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 6, 1941, in Forsyth County to Henry A. and Edith Hicks Joyce. He was the owner of Joyce's Service Center in Walkertown. Surviving are his wife, Brenda Fair Joyce of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Tangela and Matthew McKinney of Walkertown; a son, Dwayne Louis Joyce of Walkertown; three sisters, Betty Jean Fuller of Supply, Judy Perdue of Walnut Cove and Linda Fulp of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Bobby Joyce of Belews Creek. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, in the Mausoleum Chapel, Gardens of Memory, Walkertown by the Rev. Frank Shumate. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family may be contacted at the home. Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home, Kernersville is assisting the Joyce family. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

LOFLIN
Mrs. Lucy Gray Brown Loflin, 69, of 2158 Bristol St., died Aug. 13, 2000 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was born June 30, 1931, in Thomasville, a daughter of Walter Taft and Susie Marie Byerly Brown. She was retired from K-Mart and had worked with AT&T in Baltimore for 18 years. She was a member of Northwood Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She was married to Robert L. Loflin Jr., who survives in Kernersville. Also surviving are two sons, Gary Wayne Loflin Sr. and his wife, Susie, of Winston-Salem and Timothy Alan Loflin, Sr. and his wife, Myong, of Walnut Cove; stepmother, Daisy Lee Brown of Lexington; sisters, Mrs. Johnnie Elizabeth Pittman and Mrs. Mary Ann Altman, both of Lexington, and Mrs. Elizabeth Mae Morgan of China Grove; a brother, Harold Brown of 605 Sullivan St., Thomasville; two step-brothers, Donald Beck of Lexington and Gary Beck of Silver Valley; four grandchildren, Gary Wayne Loflin, Jr., Donnie Gray Loflin, Timothy Alan Loflin, Jr. and Danny Loflin; two great-granddaughters, Brittney and Shana Loflin. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the chapel of Family Funeral Care, 18 Randolph St., Thomasville by the Rev. Jim Thompson and Pastor Kim. Burial will be in Holly Hill cemetery. The body will remain at the Family Funeral Care, and the family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association, 430 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27401.

MARTIN
Mr. Harry L. Martin, 82, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at Clemmons Village. He was born Dec. 31, 1917, in Winston-Salem. Mr. Martin served as a lieutenant in World War II in the Normandy Invasion in the Battle of the Bulge. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., where he was a plant manager. He is survived by his wife, Florence Martin; his children, Lynn Watson of Greensboro and Harry Martin and Patricia Martin, both of Charlotte; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

NEWMAN
Mrs. Eva Prillaman Newman, 92, of 2221 Queen St., Winston-Salem, passed away Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Newman was born Feb. 21, 1908, to the late Samuel Marsh and Bettie Lester Prillaman of Stoneville and married to Bennie M. Newman, who preceded her in death in 1959. Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Roy and Lester of Stoneville, Gerry of Roxboro, and Anzlie of Newport News, Va. She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Nancy Prillaman; and one godson, Stan R. Smith. Mrs. Newman was an active member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Winston-Salem. As long as her health permitted she served with several community organizations and after over 35 years of service, she retired as office manager from Winston-Salem Coca-Cola Bottling Co. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Winston-Salem by the Rev. James Cobb and the Rev. Buddy Self. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Stoneville Town cemetery in Stoneville, N.C. SEIVERS
Mrs. Ruby Dillon Thore Seivers, 81, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at her home. She was born Jan. 8, 1919, in Forsyth County to Charlie H. and Effie Cofer Dillon. Mrs. Seivers attended Gospel Light Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe Seivers; a brother, Kenneth Dillon; and a sister, Mamie Idol. Survivors include a son, Bobby Thore of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Debbie Charles of Winston-Salem; a sister, Myrtle Morrow of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Raymond Dillon and wife Helen of Winston-Salem, and Charles Ray Dillon and wife Judy of Clemmons; her stepmother, Gladys Dillon of Winston-Salem; a special niece, Jeanette Oldham of Walkertown; two special nephews, Manyon Idol and Aldon Idol of Winston-Salem; numerous other nieces and nephews; a special friend, Bobby Oats of Winston-Salem; and a number of friends whom she communicated with on the telephone. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by Dr. Steve Roberson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

STALEY
KERNERSVILLE -- Mr. Audrey Wayne Staley, 58, of 704 Twin Creek Road died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at his home. He was born July 14, 1942, in Guilford County, the son of John and Elsie Maude Amick Staley. Surviving are a son, Johnny Staley of Gibsonville; two stepsons, Rick Young of Greensboro and Marshall Young of Atlanta; a stepdaughter, Lisa Davenport of Gibsonville; four sisters, Peggy, Elaine, Nancy and Frances; two brothers, Bill and Dave; and a granddaughter, Brandy Young. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home, Kernersville.

STANLEY
EAST BEND -- Mr. Edsel F. Stanley, 74, of 2904 Smithtown Road died Monday morning, Aug. 14, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Stanley was born in Yadkin County on March 24, 1926, to Harrison and Mary Magalene Davis Stanley. He was a member of East Bend Baptist Church. Mr. Stanley was a retired Chief of Police in East Bend and assistant chief in Boonville. Mr. Stanley drove used cars for PAV Inc. for 14 years. Surviving are his wife, Nell O. Stanley of the home; four daughters, Bonita (Grady) Davis and Bonnie (Robert) Cockerham, both of East Bend, Beverly A. Oliver of Hamptonville and Becky (Mark) Gordy of East Bend; three sons, the Rev. Charles (Libby) Stanley of East Bend, Steve (Gay Lynn) Stanley of Kannapolis and Bucky (Tammy) Stanley of East Bend; a stepson, David Owen of Boonville; a brother, Grover Stanley of Dobson; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at East Bend Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brady and the Rev. Ottis Hurst. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 to lie in state. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. CLIFTON
MOUNT AIRY -- Mr. Rodney Franklin Clifton, 59, of 558 Country Club Road, Mount Airy, N.C. , died Monday evening, Nov. 6, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 20, 1941, in Surry County to Frances Bowman Clifton of the home and the late Coy M. Clifton. Mr. Clifton was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in Electric Engineering. Mr. Clifton was well-known for his work in the tobacco markets having been employee with Farmers Tobacco Warehouse in Hughesville, Md., and Farmers Warehouse in Sparta, Tenn. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Melvina and Gilbert Huffman of Elkin, N.C., and a nephew, Robert Huffman and wife Lynn Harig of Portland, Ore. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Oakdale cemetery conducted by the Mount Airy VFW Memorial honor Guard Post #2019 of Mount Airy, N.C. The family will receive friends from 12 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Howell Funeral Home of Mount Airy and at other times at the home, 558 Country Club Road, Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Building Fund, Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 27, Mount Airy, N.C. 27030. The family is being served by Howell Funeral Service of Mount Airy.
