CHAPPELL
MT. AIRY -- Mr. Charles Franklin Chappell, 68, of 201 Forest Hill Road, Mt. Airy, husband of Sylvia S. Chappell, died Saturday, November 6, 1999 at the Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Chappell was born in Forsyth County June 20, 1931, the son of the late Thomas Frank and Essie Speas Chappell. Mr. Chappell was the owner of the Chappell Real Estate Co. He was a well known real estate appraiser and broker and he also taught real estate courses at Wytheville Community College and Surry Community College. Mr. Chappell was also a veteran of the US Army. Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Speas Chappell of the home; one sister, Ms. Barbara Jo Easter of Cana; two nephews, Phillip M. Easter and T. Darrell Easter, both of Mt. Airy; and one special cousin, Hassie Lineback Utt of Cana, Va. In addition to his parents, Mr. Chappell was preceded in death by his brother, Edward C. Chappell. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 8, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy with entombment to follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The Chappell family will receive friends at the Moody Funeral Home of Mt. Airy on Sunday night from 7 to 9 p.m.

CLARK
Mary Lee Robinson Clark, 77, of 1221 Mint Street, passed away November 3, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Clark was born November 9, 1921 to the late Jessie Frazier and Alexander Belver. She retired from Thomasville Furniture Company in 1987, after 20 years of service. Mrs. Clark was a member of St. John C.M.E. Church for more than sixty years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Rover Clark. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Theresa Clark-Caldwell and Mrs. Earnestine Clark-Coplin; her twin brother, Joseph (Margaret) Holmes; four grandchildren, Mrs. Pamela (Michael) Brown, Dr. Patricia D. Bailey, Sterling Bailey, Jr., and Carla J. Clark; eight grandchildren; a loving sister-in-law, Mrs. Alberta L. Black; one brother-in-law, Pete (Evelyn) Clark; three nieces; two nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 8, 1999 at 1 p.m. at St. John C.M.E. Church with Rev. Bobby Best officiating. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial. The family will receive friend from 12:30-1 p.m., thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour. Arrangements entrusted to and services will be conducted by Gilmore Funeral Directors.

HARRIS
Mr. Johnnie D. Harris, 81, of Everidge Road, died Saturday, November 6, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born January 26, 1918 in Wilkes County. He was preceded in death by his mother, Julia Harris. Mr. Harris was a member of Advent Moravian Church, the Men's Bible Class, and the Advent Moravian Senior Citizens. He was retired from Thomasville Furniture. Surviving are his wife, Edna Krites Harris, whom he married Thanksgiving Day, November 30, 1939; one daughter, Faye Cornatzer and husband, Quincy of Advance; two sons, Bennie Harris and wife, Linda of Winston-Salem and Wayne E. Harris of East Bend, N.C.; four grandchildren; eight grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Stone of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 8, 1999 at Advent Moravian Church with Rev. Roger Kimball officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Advent/Hopewell Moravian Band, c/o Advent Moravian Church, 1514 W. JACKSON
HAMPTONVILLE -- Mrs. Janice Coe Jackson, 61, of Hamptonville, died Saturday, November 6, 1999 at her home. She was born June 8, 1938 in Yadkin County to the late Will Coe and Opal Coe Southard. Mrs. Jackson was a homemaker and was a member of United Christian Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jasper Coe; and two children, Mickie and Dickie Albea. Survivors include her children, Robert Albea, Ronald Albea, Patricia Brown, Johnny Harris, Billie Jo Combs, Barry Anderson, and Larry Anderson; step-children, Mary Call, Joann Crump, Jimmie Harris, Janie Beulin, Gail Lail, Debbie Harris, and Jeanette Beulin; two sisters, Lois Brown and Dorothy Sprinkle; one brother, James Southard; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and her step-father, Grady Southard. A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 8, 1999 at 3:00 p.m. at Clarksbury United Methodist Church cemetery. Rev. Gene Casstevens will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Hwy 601 N of Yadkinville.

JOHNSON
Mr. Paul Johnson, 64, of 3100 Konnoah Dr., Winston-Salem, passed away November 4, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended illness. He was born March 15, 1935 the son of David M. Johnson and Nezzie Johnson. He attended Anson County public school. Mr. Johnson was a Roofing Tech and he attended Christ Temple. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Nezzie Johnson; his son, Paul, Jr.; his wife, Elizabeth; three brothers, Jack, Rudolph, and Alex Johnson; and two sisters, Lonnie Mae Johnson and Cora M. Miller. Surviving are his daughter, Joyce Holmes; two sisters, Ernestine J. Horne (Lawyer) and Jestine (Ervin) Farley; two brothers, Rev. David Johnson (Martha) and Nathaniel Johnson (Crista); five grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends; and a special friend, Ms. Tanya Rice and her son, Justin. Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 1999 at Gilmore Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. David Johnson of Charlotte. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service. JOHNSON
BOONVILLE -- Matthew 25:21 "His Lord said unto him, well done, thou good and faithful servant,...enter thou into the joy of thy Lord". Mr. Winnie Woodrow Johnson, 85, of Pendry Road, died Saturday, November 6, 1999 at his home. Mr. Johnson was born January 26, 1914 in Yadkin County to the late Romey Patrick and Mary Lou Ada Cockerham Johnson. He was a farmer and also a member of Yadkin Masonic Lodge #162 A.F. & A.M. He was a member of Richmond Hill Baptist Church where he served the church faithfully for many years. He was elected Deacon in 1948, taught the Adult Men's Sunday School Class for over 50 years and was the choir director. In addition, he also served as the treasurer and a church trustee. He was preceded in death by three sisters, DeEtte Reece, Sally Fleming, and Gerthie Davis; and three brothers, Everett Johnson, Foard Johnson, and Thad Johnson. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Lexie Hobson Johnson of the home; one daughter, Shirley Martin (John) Paterson of East Bend; sons, Keith (Wanda) Johnson of Edenton, and Von (Susan) Johnson, Kerry (Shelia) Johnson, all of Boonville; one sister, Lucille Gross Kelly of Hickory; brothers, William "Bill" Johnson of Clemmons and Paul Monroe (Wyona) Johnson of Mocksville; 9 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The body will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, November 8, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Richmond Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Will Hamric and Rev. McCUMMINGS
Mr. Claude Lee McCummings, 87, of 3908 Glen Oak Drive passed away on Friday, November 5, 1999 at Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center following a period of illness. He was born on July 4, 1912 to the late Mrs. Rosa Bethea McCummings and Mr. Blake McCummings in Marion, S.C. His family relocated to Hamlet, N.C., where he spent the early years of his life and joined First Baptist Church. As a young man, he moved to Winston-Salem, where he met and married his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Mrs. Brownie L. McCummings, who preceded him in death on February 24, 1999. Also preceding him in death was a son, Harold McCummings; a granddaughter, Shelia McCummings; four sisters, Mrs. Mamie Malloy, Mrs. Rena Jackson, Mrs. Julia Lucas, and Mrs. Mildred Timmons; and two brothers, Mr. Robert McCummings and Mr. Walter McCummings. Mr. McCummings was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II. He was employed by B.F. Huntley Furniture Company (now Thomasville Furniture) for more than 30 years. He is survived by three sons, David (Mary) McCummings of Charlotte, Claude (Barbara) McCummings, Jr. of Winston-Salem, and Donald (Linda) McCummings of Walkertown; two daughters, Jacqueline (Walter) Black of Kernersville and Beverly (Tony) Sellars of Winston-Salem; 27 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Willie (Terri) McCummings of Rochester, N.Y. and Herbert McCummings of Springfield, Mass.; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Grice of Bronx, N.Y.; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth McCummings of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Earline W. Hairston and Vernelle W. Spratt of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with Reverend Samuel J. Cornelius officiating. Interment will be in the family plot of the Evergreen cemetery. The family will meet with relatives and friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Russell Funeral Home. McGEE
Mr. Leon Alex McGee, Sr., 77, of Germanton Road died Friday, November 5, 1999 at his home after a brief illness. Mr. McGee was born on December 29, 1921 in Pinnacle, N.C. to William Allen and Mary Jane Fulp McGee. He was retired from the Civil Service and other related government projects after 42 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Leon Alex McGee, Jr.; and 11 brothers and sisters, Ralph, Roscoe, Roy, Lillian Johnson, Wilma Kirk, Lester, Eugene, Nannie Boyles, Glenn, William and Della Burgess. Surviving are his wife, Doris Westmoreland McGee of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Don Piet of Las Vegas, Nev., Emily and Dick Stinson of Wilmington, N.C., and Lora and James Carlisle of Montgomery Village, Md.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Gray McGee of Pilot Mountain and Cub McGee of Kernersville; and two sisters, Grace Holland of King and Irene Collins of Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons, Reynolda Chapel with Rev. Mark Mashburn and Robert Spainhour officiating. A military graveside service by the District 11 Memorial Honor Guard will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. MILEY
Mr. Wilbur Miley, Sr. of 4226 Mecum Rd. of Walkertown, passed away on November 12, 1922. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of all services and arrangements.

PARKS
ELKIN -- Mr. Johnny Allen Parks, 65, of C.B. Eller School Road, Elkin, died Friday, November 5, 1999 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Parks was born August 6, 1934 in Forsyth County to the late Walter William and Ruby Cook Park. Mr. Parks was retired from Vaughn Bassett and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a niece, Eloise Carter. Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Parks of the home; two sons, Ronnie and Donnie Parks, both of Elkin; one daughter, Teresa Aston of Winston-Salem; one brother, Donald Parks of Glade Valley; one sister, Shelby Carter of Elkin; his step-mother, Opal Parks of Hamptonville; one step-brother, Terry Long of Hamptonville; one step-sister, Patty Dehart of Winston-Salem; and 9 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 8, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by Dr. Don Stephens and Rev. Jack Cook. RHYAN
Ms. Esther Shuler Rhyan, 78, of 5140 Butterfield Drive, passed away on Wednesday, November 3, 1999 atForsyth Medical Center, following a brief illness. She was a native of Orangeburg, S.C. and had resided in Winston-Salem for 70 years. She was a member of the New Unity Baptist Church, where she served with the Pastor's Aide, the Missionary Board, and the Sunday School. She was a retired employee of Carolina Linen Service, where she worked for over 30 years. Ms. Rhyan is survived by one son, Robert Simpson; and one daughter, Christine (Roland) Douthit, both of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one adopted great-grandchild; one brother, Jake Rhyan of Charlotte; four sisters, Earline Bryant of Jersey City, N.J., and Roseztta Carree, Martha (Leroy) Terry, and Bernice Rhyne, all of Winston-Salem; many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, November 8, 1999 at 12:00 noon from the New Unity Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Johnny E. Scott officiating. HILLSVILLE, VA. -- Mrs. Daisy Evogene (Jean) Joyce Royal, 59, of 951 Howlett Street, Hillsville, Va., died November 6, 1999 at N.C. Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Royal was born December 23, 1939 to James Harry and Nannie Wall Joyce. She was formerly employed as an Inspector with the N.C. State Board of Cosmetology and was a member of Victory Way Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, James Harry (Jimmy) Joyce, Jr. on October 29, 1999. Survivors include one daughter, Starr Royal of the home; one son, Thurmon James (T.J.) Royal of the home; one sister, Mrs. Jack (Jo Ann) Barney of Advance; one brother, Mr. Maynard Ray Joyce of Hillsville, Va.; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ella Sue Joyce of Stuart, Va. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, November 8, 1999 at 11:0 a.m. at Victory Way Baptist Church in Hillsville, Va. Rev. Neil Edison and Rev. Ted Leach will officiate. Burial will be in Snow Hill United Methodist Church cemetery in Danbury. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home Chapel.

SMITH
HARMONY -- Darrell N. Smith, 69, of Sheffield Rd., passed away November 6, 1999 at Davis Medical Center in Statesville, N.C. Mr. Smith was born March 25, 1930 in Iredell County to the late James N. and Ada L. Tomlin Smith. He was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church and the Born Again Singers. Mr. Smith served his country during WWII in the United States Navy. He retired in 1991 from the Hall of Justice in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife of six years, Linda A. Smith; two sons, Jimmy Smith and wife, Elaine of Statesville and Michael Smith of Taylorsville, N.C.; one daughter, Kim Davis of Winston-Salem; step-daughter Ruth Shores and husband, Charles; and step-son, Jason Rock, both of Winston-Salem; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 8, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Edgewood Baptist Church in Cooleemee, N.C. with Rev. Danny Shore and Pastor Robert Staton officiating. The body will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at New Union United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 7, 1999 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. SMITH
Mr. Fred Turner Smith, Jr., 74, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, November 6, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 24, 1924 in Forsyth County to Fred Turner Smith, Sr. and Lena Coletrain Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. He is survived by two brothers, Alvin R. Smith, Sr. and Clarence Leroy Smith, both of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church by Dr. Douglas Summers. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Mt. BARKER
GREENSBORO -- Mr. Ralph Eugene Barker, 75, of 121 Rocky Knoll Circle, died Wednesday, November 3, 1999. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 6, 1999 at 3:30 p.m. at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Vanstory Chapel. Burial will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park. Mr. Barker was a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church, retired from Bell South, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific during W.W.II, a member of the VFW Post 2087 and also the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel Pugh Barker and a sister, Helen Foust. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Richard Sands of Apex; a son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Edie Barker of Greensboro; brothers and sisters, Harold Barker, Alma Kirkman, Margie Pope all of Greensboro, Wilma Rush of Winston-Salem, and Otis Barker of Julian; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. BEAVER
MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Oscar Edwards Beaver, 76, of Spring Street, died Wednesday at the Wake Forest University/ Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Eaton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Neil Carter officiating. Burial will be in Rose cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Friday night from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. They request memorials be considered for the Capital fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Mocksville, 261 South Main Street, Mocksville, N.C. 27028. Mr. Beaver was born in Landis, N.C. on December 31, 1922. He was preceded in death by his parents, Estelle Adams Campbell, Paul Beaver and Millard Campbell and was a retired truck driver. He served in the 2nd Ranger Battalion and then the Co. E. 409th Infantry with the U.S. Army during WWII serving in Belgium, Austria, and Germany. Mr. Beaver was a member of the Mocksville First Presbyterian Church. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Diggs and Sara Sands and by three brothers, Paul Beaver, Kenneth Beaver, and Norman Beaver. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Cerny Beaver of the home; two sons, Clifford Beaver of Redmond, Washington and Paul Beaver and wife, Jane of Mocksville; a daughter, Jill Kiser and husband, Dick of Mocksville; seven grandchildren, Scott Beaver, James Beaver, Craig Beaver, Christopher Beaver, Katie Beaver, Andrew Kiser, and Mary Ann Kiser; three great-grandchildren, Suzie Beaver, Kaitlyn Beaver, and Derick Beaver; one sister, Mary Frances Johnson of Mocksville; six brothers, Marshall Beaver and wife, Betty Lee of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Gordon Beaver and wife, Mary Lee of Salisbury, James Campbell and wife, Betty of Lawsonville, David Beaver of Cooleemee, Donald Beaver and wife, Nancy of Mocksville, and Edwin Beaver and wife, Lorene of Salisbury; and several nieces and nephews.

BLACK
Mrs. Alice B. Black, 88, of 709 Glencoe Street, died Wednesday, November 3, 1999 at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons, after an extended illness. She was born May 11, 1911 in Kershaw, S.C. to the late Johnny Buffert and Mary Isaiah Buffert. She had been a resident of Winston-Salem since 1930 and was a retired employee of the Winston-Salem Leaf House. Mrs. Black was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she had served as an Usher for more than 50 years, she was a member of the Missionary Group #9, and the Galaxy Auxiliary. In the community, she was a lead singer of the Russell Camp Meeting Choir, the Red Rose Quartet, and other organizations. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Black. She leaves to cherish her memory, four sisters, Flossie B. White of Maryland, Mary B. Johnson, Nellie B. Eaton and spouse, William, and Viola B. Pollock, all of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Samuel Cueford of Winston-Salem, Walter Buffert of California, Mr. Shirley Buffert of New York, and Johnny Buffert, and spouse Fannie of Maryland; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 8, 1999 at 12:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Lowe officiating. The family will assemble at the Funeral Home for the procession to the church for the memorial service. Forsyth Funeral Directors are serving the family of Mrs. Alice B. Black.

BREEZE
KING -- Karen Breeze, 60, of King, died Friday, November 5, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center after a long illness. She is survived by her granddaughter, Katie Hill of the home; one son, Michael Breeze and wife, Peggy of Texas; and two daughters, Rebecca Webb and husband, Mike of King and Cindy Hill of Tenn. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 1999 at Crestview Memorial Park, Rural Hall. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, November 6, 1999 at 1529 Chestnut Grove Rd. in King. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

BROADWAY
BAYSE, VA. -- Mr. James Wilson Broadway of Bayse, Va., died at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va. on November 4, 1999. He was born in Winston-Salem, July 27, 1939, the son of Lonnie Delmer Broadway and mothered by Lou B. Honeycutt. He attended James Gray High School and enlisted in the Air Force. He worked for the Forsyth County Sheriff's Dept. in the 1960's. For the past 18 years, he had worked for Blue Ridge Trust Company as the Director of Safety Control for Willard and Vonnie Fansler, whose friendship he treasured. Mr. Broadway was a member of Immanuel Moravian Church of Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his father; beloved grandparents, James and Anne Marsh Broadway; and one son, Windall Gray Broadway. He is survived by his step-mother, Betty Broadway of Virginia Beach, Va; a son Christ Roland Broadway of Mocksville; a daughter, Theresa Lynn Broadway of South Carolina; and a beloved aunt Lou Broadway Honeycutt of Lewisville. He left cousins, Marta and Harvey Hayden, to whom he was devoted. Mr. Broadway was godfather to Ostara and Marcus Fansler, whom he loved dearly. The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Hospice Center at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, Va., Immanuel Moravian Church, Peach Tree Street, Winston-Salem, or to a charity .
