HOLCOMB
CLEMMONS -- Mr. Graham Davis "Shorty" Holcomb, 71, passed away Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Winston-Salem to the late Arthur Lee and Ina Chamberlain Holcomb. Mr. Holcomb was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Southern Bell after 32 years and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Mr. Holcomb was a member of Unity Moravian Church of Lewisville. Surviving are his wife, Betty Phillips Holcomb of the home; three daughters, Melinda Holcomb Allen (Dennis), Julie Louise Holcomb, both of Clemmons and Leslie Holcomb Madigan (David) of Charlottesville, Va.; four grandchildren, Matthew Craycroft, Ali, Kendall and Michael Madigan; a stepson, Richard W. Phillips of Winston-Salem; a stepdaughter, Sharon Phillips and her daughter, Nicole Poteat of Winston-Salem; a sister, Pauline Holcomb Waller of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Unity Moravian Church with the Rev. Carl Southerland officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. ARARAT -- Mrs. Leona Simmons Key, 79, of Route 1, loving wife of 56 years to Mr. Chester Key, passed away Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Surry Community Nursing Center. Mrs. Key was born in Surry County Jan. 2, 1921, to the late Isaiah and Nora Venable Simmons. She was employed by Glenn L. Martin Airplane Plant in Baltimore, Md., during World War II and later at Spencer's for 17 years. She was a lifetime member of White Plains Friends Meeting. In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Joyce and Gerald Brown and Carole and Bill Bryant all of Ararat and Debra Key of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Travis Brown of Varnamtown, Charlotte Brown and Andy Bryant of Ararat and Tom Bryant of Cary; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marlene and Clayton Watson and Margie and Russell Hemmings, all of Mount Airy; a brother, James Simmons of Mount Airy; and a sister-in-law, Pauline Simmons of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Key was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Gardner; a half-sister, Beulah Hill; and a brother, Harlan Simmons. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at White Plains Friends Meeting conducted by the Rev. Wayne Johnson. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Ararat Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at White Plains Friends Meeting. Mrs. Key rests at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.

MILLER
Mrs. Evelyn Raker Miller, 84, passed away Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Miller was born in Franklin County, Pa., to Elmer and Elizabeth Raker. She was a member of Grace Baptist Temple for several years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Shirley Miller. Surviving are a daughter, Sylvia Reid (husband Russell) of Welcome and two grandsons, Russ Reid of Rural Hall and Ron Reid of Thomasville. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with Pastor Ed Sears officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

MOTSINGER
Mrs. Bessie Faye Hedgecock Motsinger, 85, of Motsinger Drive died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 8, 1915, in Davidson County, a daughter of of Arthur and Phoebe Weavil Hedgecock. Mrs. Motsinger grew up in the Abbotts Creek community, was a member of Abbotts Creek Baptist Church and graduated from Wallburg High School. She married Jonah Ray Motsinger in 1936 and moved to the Sedge Garden community. She became a member of Saint Delight Primitive Baptist Church. She retired from the Forsyth County school system after 20 years of service. Mrs. Motsinger was preceded in death by her husband in 1962; her parents; a sister, Mary Hedgecock; three brothers, Charlie, Willie Paul and Early Hedgecock; and a son-in-law, Charles Talley. She is survived by a daughter, Shelba Talley of Kernersville; two sons and daughters-in-law, J.R. and Kathy Motsinger and Terry and Ellen Motsinger of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Emma Lee Parnell, Blanche Sechrest (George) and Mildred Craven (Clay); three grandchildren, Amanda Motsinger, Sandra Weavil (Randy) and LuAnn Baker (Wesley); four great-grandchildren, Miranda Weavil, Jordan, and Jonathan and Jason Baker; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at Saint Delight Primitive Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. POOLE
HIGH POINT -- Mrs. Catherine West Poole, 86, formerly of Forrest Street, died Nov. 1, 2000, at Wesleyan Arms Nursing Center. Mrs. Poole was born in Duplin County on Feb. 27, 1914, a daughter of Luther L. and Cora Blanchard West. She had been a resident of High Point since 1931 and graduated from the Guilford General School of Nursing in 1934. Mrs. Poole was employed for 56 years as an RN with High Point Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1979. She was a member of American Nursing Association District #9. She was also a member of Christ United Methodist Church, the Women's Sunday school class and the Women's Circle #4. On Oct. 27, 1934, she was married to Joe Eugene Poole, who preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1984. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Samuel G. (Patsy) Myers of Melbourne, Fla., and Mrs. Jackie P. Skidmore of 4020 River Pointe Place, High Point; a brother, Ray West of Warsaw; four grandchildren, Michael G. Myers, Tracey E. Myers, Andrew Kirk Myers and Christian Skidmore; and a great-granddaughter, Stephanie Lynn Skidmore of High Point. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, in the Sechrest Chapel by Dr. Glenn L. Myers Jr. and the Rev. Lloyd G. Hunsucker. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 Friday evening at Sechrest Funeral Service on E. CLEMMONS -- Mrs. Mary Craver Scott, 84, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Davidson County May 15, 1916, to George Buxton and Maggie Williams Craver. Mrs. Scott was a charter member of Arcadia United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Odell Scott; two brothers; and a sister. Surviving are a son, Kenneth Scott and wife Merle of Clemmons; a daughter, Mary Ann Scott and husband Farrell of Wilmington; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Emmie Denny of Raleigh. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Arcadia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alvin Pope officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Arcadia United Methodist Church, N.C. Highway 150, Clemmons, NC 27012. SNIPES
Mr. Robert Charles "Bob" Snipes, 71, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, after a brief illness. He was born in Forsyth County on March 26, 1929, to F.N. and Irene Watkins Snipes. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from Western Electric (AT&T) after 39 years of service. Bob was an active member of Friedland Moravian Church, serving as acolyte, head usher, Sunday school teacher, board member and diener. He was an avid golfer and worked at Maple Leaf Golf Course. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Deborah K. Snipes. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Ann Hine Snipes of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bryan and Cathy Snipes of Winston-Salem and Mark and Tammy Snipes of Lexington; a daughter and son-in-law, Tim and Marianne Smith of Kernersville; seven grandchildren, Richard and David Snipes, Jayson and Amber Snipes, Ashlyn, Christian and Noah Smith; and a sister, Phyllis S. Plank of Ocala, Fla. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5 at Friedland Moravian Church with Dr. Steve E. Craver officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. SOUTHARD
ELKIN -- Mr. Paul Wilbur Southard, 85, of 210 S. Mulberry Church Road passed away in the early morning hours of Nov. 3, 2000, at Elkin Healthcare after a short illness. Mr. Southard was born Feb. 21, 1915, to the late Sye Monsie and Betty Key Southard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence "Shorty" Southard. Mr. Southard was a retired tobacco farmer, a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a member of Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 63 years, Posy White Southard of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul "Buster" and Carol Southard of State Road; a grandson and wife, Brent and Frankie Southard of Elkin; and a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Renee Southard of Elkin. He is also survived by a brother, S.M. Southard of Elkin, and five sisters, Madge Wood, Mary Osborne, Bertie Blevins all of Elkin, Rachel Mayes of Dobson and Ruth Gentry of Lexington. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph Grose and the Rev. J.T. Blevins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. His body will remain at Davis and Son Funeral Home in Dobson until carried to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the home of his grandson and wife, Brent and Frankie Southard, 223 S. Mulberry Church Road, Elkin.

THOMAS
Mr. Paul Allen Thomas, 50, of Greene Cross Court died Nov. 1, 2000, at his home. He was born in Forsyth County on April 4, 1950, to Paul Robert and Frances Roberta Maxey Thomas. Mr. Thomas was of the Baptist faith, was a self-employed paint contractor and was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 29 years. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict, and received the silver star. Mr. Thomas is survived by his father, Paul R. Thomas of Winston-Salem; his fiancee', Judi Greene of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Shirley Wood and husband, Danny, of Kernersville; Becky Slate of Winston-Salem; and Nancy Byerly and husband, Dolan, of Winston-Salem; a brother, Charlie (Buster) Thomas and wife, Cindy, of Alabama; four nephews and two nieces. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Danny Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family would like for love offerings to be made to the family during their time of need.

CARTRETTE
LEXINGTON -- Donald Ray Cartrette, of Michael Street, died at 2:35 p.m. Thursday at Lexington Memorial Hospital after declining health for six months. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel conducted by the Rev. Paul Holbrook and the Rev. Fred Miller. Burial will be at Forest Hill Memorial Park. Mr. Cartrette was born Oct. 8, 1939, in Bladen County to Daniel Cartrette and Beulah Powell Cartrette. He was an employee of Link-Taylor Furniture and of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Wood Cartrette of the home; sons Ronald Wayne Cartrette, Jimmy Ray Cartrette, Kelly James Cartrette all of Lexington and Robert Daniel Cartrette of Yadkinville; a daughter, Peggy Sue Cartrette Beck of Lexington; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Jim Cartrette of Hope Mills, Ben Cartrette of Pulaski, Va., Elbert Cartrette of Raleigh, Sam Cartrette, Auburn Cartrette and Robert Cartrette all of Lexington; and sisters Geneva Hill and Faye Howell, both of Lexington. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.

COE
Mr. Willie Gray Coe, 94, a resident of 1510 Shady Grove Church Road went to be with the Lord on Nov. 2, 2000. He was born in Stokes County on Feb. 17, 1906, a son of William Thomas Coe and Martha Jane Coe. He was a faithful member of Bethany United Church of Christ for more than 60 years. He was a farmer and had retired from Unique Furniture Co. On Nov. 24, 1928, he was married to Miss Mary Lourona Draughn, who died in 1980. Surviving are two daughters, Ms. Margaret Clark and friend Harold Calahan of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Harold (Shelby) Smith of High Point; two sons, Marvin Coe and wife Barbara and Calvin Coe and wife Dorothy, both of Winston-Salem; a brother, Coy A. Coe of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Callaway and a brother, John R. Coe Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethany United Church of Christ by the Rev. Robert Thurston and the Rev. Banks Shepherd. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Winston-Salem until placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will be at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8:30 Saturday and other times at the home of a son, Marvin Coe, 842 Shady Grove Church Road, Winston-Salem. The family wishes to thank the staff of The Oaks of Thomasville and the nurses on the sixth-floor west of Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem for their love and care for their dad. Mr. Charles William Dillon, 79, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Kernersville to the late Charles Roland and Neomia Cattlet Dillon. Mr. Dillon was a charter member of Konnoak Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army World War veteran. He retired from Sara Lee Corp. with 39 1/2 years of service and was employed with Food Fair. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Estelle Smith Dillon of the home; three sons, Mr. Larry (wife Merrill) Dillon of Eufaula, Ala., Mr. Terry (wife Geraldine) Dillon of Kernersville and Mr. Jerry (wife Carol) Dillon of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Ragan Dillon of Birmingham, Ala., Charles William Dillon II of Eufaula, Ala. and Tracey Dillon and Pamela Dillon of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Mrs. Macie Cheek of Walkertown. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 63 years, Posy White Southard of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul "Buster" and Carol Southard of State Road; a grandson and wife, Brent and Frankie Southard of Elkin; and a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Renee Southard of Elkin. He is also survived by a brother, S.M. Southard of Elkin, and five sisters, Madge Wood, Mary Osborne, Bertie Blevins all of Elkin, Rachel Mayes of Dobson and Ruth Gentry of Lexington. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph Grose and the Rev. J.T. Blevins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. His body will remain at Davis and Son Funeral Home in Dobson until carried to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the home of his grandson and wife, Brent and Frankie Southard, 223 S. Mulberry Church Road, Elkin.

THOMAS
Mr. Paul Allen Thomas, 50, of Greene Cross Court died Nov. 1, 2000, at his home. He was born in Forsyth County on April 4, 1950, to Paul Robert and Frances Roberta Maxey Thomas. Mr. Thomas was of the Baptist faith, was a self-employed paint contractor and was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 29 years. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict, and received the silver star. Mr. Thomas is survived by his father, Paul R. Thomas of Winston-Salem; his fiancee', Judi Greene of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Shirley Wood and husband, Danny, of Kernersville; Becky Slate of Winston-Salem; and Nancy Byerly and husband, Dolan, of Winston-Salem; a brother, Charlie (Buster) Thomas and wife, Cindy, of Alabama; four nephews and two nieces. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Danny Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family would like for love offerings to be made to the family during their time of need.
