ATKINS
McLEANSVILLE -- Beverly Gene Atkins, 72, of McLeansville went home to be with his Lord Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Mr. Atkins was retired from Lorillard and was a faithful member of Gospel Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War and World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy for three years. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at Gospel Baptist Church. A funeral service at 8 p.m. will follow the visitation with the Rev. Paul Luttrell officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at Lakeview Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Melba Gray Atkins of the home; mother Annie Mae Atkins of Colfax; four sons, Jack Atkins of Winston-Salem and Doug Atkins, Richard Atkins and Carrie Atkins, all of Greensboro; five daughters, Linda Stafford of Winston-Salem, Kim Bolejack of Sandy Ridge, Debbie Taylor of Kernersville, Pam Harris of Georgia and Sandy Atkins of New Orleans, La.; a stepson, Norman Gray of Tennessee; a stepdaughter, Shelia Williams of Reidsville; 19 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; four brothers, D.L. Atkins, Herbert Atkins, David Atkins and Stanley Atkins, all of Colfax ; and three sisters, Marie Parrish of Colfax, Ann Allen of South Carolina and Patty Coates of Virginia. The family would like to thank Dr. Lowell Shinn and the staff at Regional Cancer Institute for the exceptional care received by Mr. Atkins. BARRETT
Mrs. Theresa Catherine Barrett, 85, formerly of West Hempstead, N.Y., passed away Nov. 1, 2000, at the Brian Center. Mrs. Barrett was born Feb. 21, 1915, in Jamaica, N.Y., to the late Mary C. and John F. Homeyer. Mrs. Barrett was the loving mother of seven children, five surviving. She is survived by two daughters, Joan Pacula and husband, Richard, of Winston-Salem, and Doris Treu and husband, Glenn, of West Hempstead, N.Y.; three sons, Robert Slingo and wife, Angela, of East Northport, N.Y., Dennis Barrett and wife, Jean, of Oakdale, N.Y., and Thomas Barrett and wife, Doreen, of Levittown, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters and a brother. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Father Joseph Madden. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

CLYBURN
Mrs. Roberta Mitchell Clyburn, 82, of 901 Goldfloss Street passed away on Monday, October 30, 2000, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center unexpectedly. She was a native of Rural Hall, N.C., born on Oct. 28, 1918, to the late Charlie and Ludie Crews Mitchell. She attended Carver High School and was a retired employee of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. She was a former member of the St. James United Methodist Church, Rural Hall, N.C. She was married to the late George W. Clyburn and from that union, four children were born. Surviving Mrs. Clyburn are her four children, Billy (Rainey) Mitchell, Donald (Ruby) Clyburn, Doris (Joseph) Woodruff and James (Clara) Clyburn; ten grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a sister, Josephine Shouse of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Lloyd Bethea of Asheville, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at 1 p.m. from the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with the Reverend James R. Clyburn, Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the St. James United Methodist Church, Rural Hall, N.C. The family visitation will be from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Russell Funeral Home. (RUSSELL).

HEGE
Richard Grey Hege, 53, of Welcome died Nov. 1, 2000. He was a farmer and an iron worker. He was the son of the late Ralph and Lunette Scott Hege. Survivors include two sons, Grady Ray Hege and Michael Scott Hege, both of Welcome; a sister, Shirley Hedrick of Welcome; a stepbrother, Robert Leonard of Fort Bragg; his grandmother, Mae Zimmerman of Welcome; and two grandchildren, Dana and Devon Hege. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Lighthouse Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Forest Hills cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Davidson County Hospice and the Davidson County Cancer Service. HEMPHILL
Raymond Hemphill, 53, (Fish Man) died Nov. 1, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife, Alander Hemphill; two daughters, Krystal Ray Little and Rachella Hemphill; three sons, Maurice Warren Little, Terence Xavious Little and Christopher Raymond Hemphill; his father, Ed Hemphill; a sister, Esther Boulware; two grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Chapel, 5980 Kinney Road, 765-2793.

HENDRIX
Ms. Betty Stine Hendrix, 73, of Clemmons died unexpectedly Nov. 2, 2000. She was born in Iredell County to James E. and Essie Current Stine. Ms. Hendrix was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church. A brother, George Stine preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa H. and Robert C. Mastin of Polkton; a son, Randy L. Hendrix of Clemmons; a grandchild, Evan Lee Hendrix of Clemmons; a sister, Margaret S. Prekler of Apex; and a brother, Kenneth Stine of Greensboro. Funeral services will be Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. The family will receive friends after the service. JOHNSON
LENOIR -- Mr. Hubert Edgar Johnson, 70, of 1475 Douglas Lane, Lenoir, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir. Mr. Johnson was born in Wilkes County, Dec. 4, 1929, to James Edgar and Julia Estep Johnson. Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Army, he was a retired manager for Thompson Ford in Hampton, Va., and of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife, Kay Johnson, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen Crandol and husband, Jerry of Hampton, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin Johnson and wife, Judy of Newport News, Va., and Gary Johnson and wife, Donna, of Pinnacle; seven grandchildren; his mother, Julia Johnson of Siloam; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia Peele of Siloam, Agnes Carlyle and husband, Frank, of Siloam, Avanell Poindexter and husband, Olin, of Elkin, Mozelle Johnson of Siloam and Audrey Scott and husband, Johnny, of Siloam. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a son, Brad Johnson. Funeral services for Mr. Johnson will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Siloam Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Faw and the Rev. Jimmy Cain. Burial will follow at Siloam Baptist Church cemetery. LADD
Mrs. Nettie Perkins Ladd, 105, died Nov. 2, 2000, at Brookridge Baptist Nursing Home. She was born May 1, 1895, in Danville, Va., one of 14 children of Charles and Carrie Perkins, all deceased. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sterling H. Ladd, in 1964 and continued living in Danville until 1996. Nettie is survived by a son, Garland H. Ladd, and wife Sara, who reside in Winston-Salem. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Mrs. Brenda Ladd Moore and husband Tom of Columbia, S.C., Garland H. Ladd Jr. of Raleigh and Michael S. Ladd of Charlotte; and two great-grandchildren, Jason and Meredith Moore of Columbia, S.C. Also she leaves numerous nieces and nephews and their families, who have endeared themselves to Nettie as her extended family. Nettie enjoyed remarkably good health and mental clarity until recently and lived alone until age 98. After residing several more years in Danville with a niece, Mrs. Juanita Perkins, she moved to an assisted living facility in Winston-Salem. Asked how she liked living there, she replied, "It's OK, but there are too many old people living here and some of them don't know the war is over!" Her last job was cafeteria manager at a Danville public school, and during summer breaks she served as food manager at a girls summer camp in West Virginia. Her lifelong interests always centered on family and church. She was a member at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church in Danville for 96 years and taught an adult Sunday school class there until her mid- 90s. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at Highland Burial Park in Danville with the Rev. Lee Ellison presiding. The family will visit with friends immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, 1026 North Main St., Danville, V A, 24540. Wrenn Yeatts Funeral Home in Danville, Va. will coordinate burial arrangements.

LAWSON
Mrs. Etta Elliott Lawson, 84, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at her home. She was born in Haywood County to Lonn and Laura Mack Elliott. Mrs. Lawson was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Vernon Lawson. Survivors include a son, Michael Lawson (wife, Faye) of Pfafftown; a grandson, Michael James Lawson (wife, Sheila) of Yadkinville; great-granddaughter, Amanda Jones and sister-in-law, Elsie Elliott. There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with the Rev. Warren Kerr officiating. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, for Mrs. Ellie Bridgers Long of Rich Square. She was the widow of Robert W. Long Sr. and was predeceased by a son, Robert W. McCRAY
Mrs. Mary A. Battle McCray, 70, of 319 E. 27th St. was a native and lifelong resident of Winston-Salem. She was born Dec. 25, 1929, to Judd and Beatrice Mitchell in Mount Airy. She was a faithful member of Mount Able Pentcostal Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Helen Marie Dodd. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband, William McCray; three daughters, Patricia Dodd, Savannah (Logan) Cofield and Elizabeth (Curtis) Tripp; two sons, George Dodd and Lloyd Dodd, all of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, John and Bill Mitchell; a sister, Elizabeth Martin; two sisters-in-law, Mammie Mitchell and Mary Mitchell, all of Siloam; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, from the Frances S. & Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel, where Bishop Burgess will officiate. MOTSINGER
Mrs. Bessie Faye Hedgecock Motsinger, 85, of Motsinger Drive died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 8, 1915, in Davidson County, a daughter of of Arthur and Phoebe Weavil Hedgecock. Mrs. Motsinger grew up in the Abbotts Creek community, was a member of Abbotts Creek Baptist Church and graduated from Wallburg High School. She married Jonah Ray Motsinger in 1936 and moved to the Sedge Garden community. She became a member of Saint Delight Primitive Baptist Church. She retired from the Forsyth County school system after 20 years of service. Mrs. Motsinger was preceded in death by her husband in 1962, her parents, a sister, Mary Hedgecock, and a son-in-law, Charles Talley. She is survived by a daughter, Shelba Talley of Kernersville; two sons and daughters-in-law, J.R. and Kathy Motsinger and Terry and Ellen Motsinger of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Emma Lee Parnell, Blanche Sechrist (George) and Mildred Craven (Clay); three grandchildren, Amanda Motsinger, Sandra Weavil (Randy) and LuAnn Baker (Wesley); four great-grandchildren, Miranda Weavil, Jordan, and Jonathan and Jason Baker; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at Saint Delight Primitive Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. MYERS
Mr. Lester Myers Sr., 80, of 1080 Shalimar Drive passed away Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at the Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 26, 1920, in Pageland, S.C., to the late Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Myers and moved to Winston-Salem at an early age. He was a faithful member of the Antioch Baptist Church, serving on the deacon board, Sunday school and the Senior Choir. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 220, the Happy Hill Senior Citizens Club, the D. Everette Bible study class of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was a retired employee of AT&T. He leaves to cherish his wonderful memories a loving and devoted wife of 30 years, Mrs. Cassie Myers of the home; a loving son, Lester Myers Jr. of Winston-Salem; a devoted daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and James Mitchell Sr.; six loving grandchildren, Joseph (Bertha) Mitchell, Monticello Mitchell, LaCheryl Mitchell, LaRita (Rupert) Bell, Denita Mitchell and Catanza Mitchell; seven great-grandchildren; a goddaughter, Arneise Robinson; a devoted brother, Houston (Louise) Myers of Detroit, Mich.; two loving sisters, Mrs. Hattie Austin of New York and Mrs. Emelia Nivens of Charlotte; devoted friends, Charles and Tressie Springs, the Rev. and Mrs. Melvin Nellums, Mr. Willie Mouzon, Clifton and Dollie Hines, Frank Thomas, George Baldwin, the Antioch Baptist Church family; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. ROBERTSON
Mrs. Kathynel Blair Robertson, 57, of 635 W. 13th St. passed away Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was a native of Winston-Salem, born Oct. 29, 1943, the daughter of the late Moses and Velma Jones Blair, and spent many years in Gastonia. She was a member of the First Baptist Church (East Winston), where she played for the children and choral club choirs. She was a member of the Addie C. Morris Club and served with other organizations. She was employed with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools as a substitute teacher until her health began to decline. She is survived by her husband, William Robertson of Washington, D.C.; two children, Kimberly Robertson (Eugene Littlejohn) and Anthony Robertson, both of Winston-Salem; a sister, Miriam Booker (LaVaughn) of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Demetrius, Ciara and Brittany, all of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Vera Copeland of Washington, D.C.; a niece, OanJelete Booker and a nephew, Vaughn Booker, both of Charlotte and a host of other relatives and friends. Homegoing services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Wendell A. Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. SMITHERMAN
BANNER ELK -- Mr. Peter Franklin Smitherman, 67, of South Slope Circle died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at his residence. He was born Sept. 8, 1933, in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, to the late John and Mary Olive Smitherman. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served in the U.S. Navy. He was instrumental in preventing the Ninth Street connector from destroying Hanes Park and adjacent neighborhoods. As a founder of the West End Association, he reversed the decay of what is now a historic district. He continued to improve the West End by moving the Zevely house to its present location and by opening it as a restaurant in which he was owner and operator for a number of years. He was also responsible for converting a derelict gas station into a popular downtown meeting place called Johanna Shobers. He left a lasting impression as both businesses still thrive today. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed. At Pete's request, his ashes will be "disposed of economically" at his nemesis, the 14th fairway at Sugar Mountain Golf Club, Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at 3 p.m., one hour prior to "cocktail hour. " "Take five, smoke 'em if you got 'em." Pete is survived by his son, Kirk Smitherman and wife Joanna, and their children, Maggie and Jeffrey of Zebulon; his stepson, Peter Dalton Fox and his son, Walter Dalton Fox of Winston-Salem; and his brothers, John Smitherman of Gainesville, Fla., and James Smitherman of Houston, Texas. Arrangements by Hampton Funeral Service in Boone.

THOMAS
Mr. Paul Allen Thomas, 50, of Greene Cross Court died Nov. 1, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County on April 4, 1950, to Paul Robert and Frances Roberta Maxey Thomas. Mr. Thomas was of the Baptist faith and a self-employed paint contractor. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict, and he received the silver star. Mr. Thomas is survived by his father, Paul R. Thomas of Winston-Salem; his fiancee , Judi Greene of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Shirley Wood and husband, Danny, of Kernersville; Becky Slate of Winston-Salem; and Nancy Byerly and husband, Dolan, of Winston-Salem; a brother, Charlie (Buster) Thomas and wife, Cindy, of Alabama; four nephews and two nieces. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Danny Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family would like for love offerings to be made to the family during their time of need.

TURNER
Mrs. Elizabeth Hine Turner, 85, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at Silas Creek Manor She was born Dec. 27, 1914, in Forsyth County to Eugene Hine Sr. and Gertrude Willard Hine. Mrs. Turner was a lifelong resident of the Friedland community and was a member and supporter of the local Salvation Army. Survivors include a daughter, Joanna Turner of Folly Beach, S.C.; a sister, Sallie Hine Watkins of Covington, Ga.; three nephews, B.H. Hine of Denver, Colo., Louis Hine of Dallas, Texas, and Wesley Hine of Memphis, Tenn.; four nieces, Rebecca H. Weavil, Charlotte H. Renigar, and Betsy H. Davis of Winston-Salem and Hilda H. Patterson of Raleigh; and many great nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1205, Winston-Salem, NC 27102-1205.

BARNES
MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Clifton Henry Barnes, 83, of U.S. Highway 64 E. passed away Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Mr. Barnes was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Davie County to the late Richard C. and Florence Wyatt Barnes. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ila Barnes Yontz. He was a member of No Creek Primitive Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Heritage Furniture in Mocksville. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Omie Jones Barnes of the home; a brother, Harvey Barnes of Mocksville; two sisters, Pearl B. Walser of Lexington and Lelia B. Lemley of Mebane; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel, with the Elder Eugene Bennett officiating. Burial will follow the service at No Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Mocksville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at the funeral home. BENTON
Mr. Roosevelt Corbit Benton, affectionately known as "Rooster," of Winston-Salem departed this life Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Darlington, S.C., moved to Winston-Salem at an early age and attended Forsyth County schools. He worked at what was then known as Schlitz Brewery and later named Barringer R.H. Distributing Co. Inc. for 33 years. He is believed to be the first black American hired as a salesman with a brewery distribution company in Winston-Salem. He later worked at Goody's Manufacturing. After retiring, Mr. Benton moved to Durham and lived with Dee Dee and her family for many years. Mr. Benton moved back to the city and was a member of the Usher Board and Senior Class No. 3 at Mars Hill Baptist Church; was a past junior deacon and assistant general manager of the Usher Board; and had served as a PTA president. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Harvey Benton, and his parents, Mr. Dock Charles Benton and Mrs. Emma Lou Corbit Benton. Mr. Benton is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Carol Benton Hunter (Jim) of Winston-Salem and Delores "Dee Dee" Benton Evans, Esquire of Durham; a son, Roosevelt "Vel" Calvin Foriest of Charlotte; a sister, Ms. Nancy Benton Carpenter of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Mr. Ernest N. Lewis of Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren, Mr. Earl Marshall Evans Jr. (Leslie) of Raleigh, Mr. Ryan Benton Evans and Ms. Angela Monique Evans of Durham, Ms. Jaime Hunter and Ms. Le'Shea Agnew of Winston-Salem; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at Mars Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. K.E. Lilly Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the family plot of the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church. The family may be contacted at 3235 Parrish Road. (RUSSELL)

BUNCH
STATESVILLE -- Mr. David Alonzo Bunch, 85, of 2508 Simonton Road died suddenly Tuesday at his residence. He was a native of Iredell County, born Sept. 29, 1915, a son of the late A.W. and Minnie Davis Bunch. Mr. Bunch was a lifelong resident of Statesville and did volunteer work at the Statesville Library. He staffed the James Iredell Room for the last 25 years since his retirement from B&B Fabrics, which he co-founded in 1949. He graduated from Mitchell College and then from Appalachian State University in 1935 and taught history and French at Borden High School in Salisbury until 1942. Mr. Bunch served as a naval officer in World War II. Although a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church from his youth, he was the teacher of the adult Sunday school class at New Salem United Methodist Church for 30 years. He was recently honored by the governor of North Carolina in recognition for his service to the citizens of Iredell County. Mr. Bunch was one of the first recipients of the "Nine Who Care" awards given by television station WSOC in Charlotte. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers. He is survived by 12 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Broad Street United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Don Haynes and the Rev. Rob Rollins. Interment will follow in Oakwood cemetery. The family will speak with friends one hour prior to the service from 3 to 4 p.m. at the church. Active and honorary pallbearers will be members of David Bunch Friendship Sunday School Class of New Salem United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Friends of Iredell County Library, 135 E. Water St., Statesville, NC 28677 or to the choice of the donor. Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Bunch.
