ELLIS
Mr. James Steven "Steve" Ellis, 51, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Sept. 11, 1949, in Forsyth County to Carroll Eugene and Faye Cook Ellis. Mr. Ellis was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Gary Eugene Ellis. Surviving are his wife, Sharon A. Ellis of Winston-Salem; his mother, Faye Robbins of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Nikki Ellis of Kernersville; a stepbrother, Burton E. Brown of King; two nieces, Kim Ellis of Walkertown and Tracey Asbury of Winston-Salem; two nephews, Gary Ellis Jr. of Walkertown and Dustin Brown of King; and a cousin, Elvis Griffin of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends after the service. A military graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Woodland cemetery by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Unit, Greensboro.

GENTRY
NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mr. Kyle M. Gentry, 73, former sheriff of Wilkes County, former chief of police of North Wilkesboro and former N.C. Highway Patrolman of J Street passed away Wednesday morning, Oct. 25, 2000, at his home. Mr. Gentry was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Alleghany County to Charles Cleveland and Cordelia McLean Gentry. Surviving are his wife, Jean Reeves Gentry of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Kim Gentry of Wilkesboro; a daughter, Deborah Mathis of Lewisville; a brother, George Gentry of Hendersonville; five sisters, Grace Woodruff of Glade Valley, Edna Medici of Cranston, R.I., Louise Friddle and Jean Pence both of Greensboro and Joan Pendry of Lakeland, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Cagney Gentry of Wilkesboro and Ashley Kyle Mathis of Lewisville. Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. today, Saturday, Oct. 28 at Elk Creek Primitive Baptist Church in the Piney Creek community of Alleghany County with Elder Jess Higgins and Elder Curtis Hash officiating. Burial in the church cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilkes, 1907, W. Park Drive, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. HOLBROOK
NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Anna Cropps Holbrook, 95, of Woodhaven Road, widow of Mack Holbrook died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at Chapel Hill AME Zion Church with the Rev. William Speas, the Rev. John Allen and the Rev. John A. Speaks officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the church. Mrs. Holbrook was born Jan. 24, 1905, in Wilkes County to John and Dora Harris Cropps. She was a charter member of Chapel Hill AME Zion Church. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Yvonne) Thomas of North Wilkesboro; two sons, Richard Mack Holbrook Sr. and Ronald Holbrook both of North Wilkesboro; a sister, Mavis Brown of North Wilkesboro; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro is in charge of the arrangements.

JOHNSON
Mr. Charles Anthony Johnson, 42, of Winston-Salem, died Oct. 23, 2000. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church in Winston-Salem. Burial will be in Collins cemetery in Madison. He was a native of Forsyth County, a member of Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church and a cab driver. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hattie B. Martin. He is survived by his children, Chris McMahan and Tracy McMahan of Winston-Salem and Latosha Gill of Morganton; father and stepmother James E. Johnson Sr. and Minnie Johnson; four brothers, James E. Johnson Jr., Michael Johnson, Danny Johnson and Eric Johnson, all of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Kevin and Zebedia of Morganton; and a host of aunts and other relatives and friends. Mrs. Vera Lucille Scales Leasure, formerly of 3660 Spaulding Drive, Independence Village Retirement Home and C.R.T. Golden Lamb Rest Home, departed this life for eternal rest Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born to Nate and Delphine Martin Scales in Madison on Oct. 10, 1905. She was a former teacher at Woodland Avenue School, Winston-Salem, and a retiree from the Washington, D.C., public schools. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Surviving are her nieces, Jean Hairston, Charlotte Gwyn, Delphine Peterson, Dorothy Dillahunt, Mattie Scales, Irene Scales, Jackie Cardwell and Alma Joyner; nephews Paul Scales and Devar Scales; great-nieces and nephews; caring friends, Hubert and Ericsteen Lash, George and Audrey Robinson, Helen Reynolds and Sinclair, Lena and Rayonette Crowder; and a host of other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, in Collins cemetery in Madison, with Minister Purvis Morris officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to C.R.T. PRIDDY
THOMASVILLE -- Mrs. Frances Marie Beamer Priddy, 72, of 3061 Denton Road died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 6, 1928 ,in Mount Airy, a daughter of Charlie and Vissie Stanley Beamer. She was retired from Davidson County Senior Services. She loved to bowl and was a member of Classic Seniors Bowling League/Davidson County Senior Citizen in 1995, a volunteer at Community General Hospital, home delivery of meals in Davidson County and a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Louise Moore Sunday-school class. She was twice married. Her first marriage was to Murrell Sanderson and her second marriage was to Boyd Priddy. Both preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Katherine Dawn Honeycutt and her husband, Ken of Thomasville and Mrs. Marybeth Marie Kindley and her husband, Harold of Thomasville; a son, Murrell P. Sanderson Jr. and his wife, Diane of Thomasville; a stepson, Alan Priddy and his wife, Libby of Thomasville; three sisters, Mrs. Gypsy Dumas and Mrs. Ruth Simmons, both of Mount Airy, and Mrs. Dwight (Mildred) Matthews of Boonville. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000 in Family Funeral Care Chapel of Thomasville. The family will receive friends after the funeral. QUEEN
MOCKSVILLE -- Hunter Alexander Queen, the infant son of Matthew H. Queen and Wendy M. Zimmerman of Farmington Road, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Surviving in addition to his parents are his maternal grandparents, Kevin and Rachel Zimmerman of Advance; his paternal grandparents, Gary and Jennie Gordan of Walkertown; and was loved by several aunts and uncles. Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Elbaville United Methodist Church and other times the family will assemble at the home of Kevin and Rachel Zimmerman, 282 Zimmerman Road, Advance. A graveside service will be held after the visitation at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Jack Wallace officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials can be made to Elbaville United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, 2825 N.C. Highway 801 S., Advance, NC 27006. Davie Funeral Service, LLC 416 Valley Road, Mocksville, will be serving the Queen and Zimmerman family.

SANTIAGO
Donna Lynn Batchelor Santiago died Sept. 8, 2000, as a result of a trailer fire. She was born Nov. 2, 1963, to Pamela and Rick Batchelor of Winston-Salem. Surviving are her former husband, Johnny Santiago; two children, Nickolas and Erika Santiago; grandparents Eva and C.C. Henderson; an uncle, Bill Bedsaul of Largo, Fla.; and two sisters, Bonnie (Chuck) Zopfi of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Rena Bryan and her son, Stephen of Winston-Salem. The family received friends at the service held Sunday, Sept. 17 at Parklawn Mausoleum Chapel. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at Parklawn cemetery. She will be buried with her mother, Pamela Kilgore.

SCOFIELD
Dr. Robert E. Scofield of Winston-Salem passed away Oct. 27, 2000. Dr. Scofield was born Jan. 29, 1925. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from Montclair State Teachers College in New Jersey. He received his doctorate in education from LeHigh University. He was director of pupil personnel services for Sparta High School, Sparta, N.J., and was education co-coordinator of the United Methodist Children's Home in Winston-Salem. He was also co-owner of Covenant Spring Christian Camp and Farm in Westfield. Dr. Scofield was a Crosby Scholar Mentor at R.J. Reynolds High School. He attended First Assembly of God Church. He was a Sunday school teacher to the children at the Children's Home for many years and dedicated his life to helping others. Dr. Scofield was preceded in death by his brother, Harry E. Scofield in August. Surviving are his wife, Olga; his son, Robert J. and wife Dauna and two grandchildren, Kelsey and Christopher of Winston-Salem; son Douglas H. and wife Cathy and grandchildren Jonathan, Susanna, Hannah and Andrew of Birmingham, Ala.; daughter Nancy Crocker and granddaughter Alyssa of Chesapeake, Va.; brother Donald Scofield; and sister Luellen Hin. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30 in the Woosley Chapel at The Children's Home on Reynolda Road with the Rev. Donald Scofield and the Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler's Funeral Home, Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem. Burial will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Children's Home. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the care he was giv en by the nurses and doctors on 4A and 5C ICU at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Cen ter.

SELL
Mrs. Lucile Peddycord Sell, 83, of 3310 Williston Road, Walkertown, widow of W.E. (Buck) Sell, died Thursday morning at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Sell was born in Forsyth County Oct. 8, 1917, a daughter of Samuel G. and Effie Hastings Peddycord. She was a retired employee of N.C. Baptist Hospital and a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church. Mrs. Sell was preceded in death by her husband in 1973, a daughter, Carolyn Dymott, in 1995, an infant son, Kent Sell, in 1951 and by four sisters and two brothers. Surviving are a daughter, Anna (Don) Bryant of Walkertown; two sons, Michael (Cheryl) Sell of Belews Creek and Larry Sell of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Lynne (Jeff) Morison, Darien (Jamie) Sell, LeAnn Sell and Kevin Sell; two great-grandsons, Darrell Southern and Christopher Sell; and two sisters, Dorothy (Clarence) Sell of Winston-Salem and Opal Weavil of Arden. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pisgah United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mike Swofford. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, her request was that memorials be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. THOMPSON
MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. James Harold Thompson Sr., 66, of Liberty Church Road died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Eaton Funeral Chapel, with Dr. David Gilbreath, the Rev. David Kiser and Mr. Richard Carter officiating. Burial will be in Eatons Baptist Church cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Mr. Thompson was born March 3, 1934, in Wilkes County to Eva Reavis Thompson of Yadkinville and the late Odell Thompson. He was retired from Lee Distribution Co. of Mocksville as a truck driver and had also worked part time with Wisecarver Trucking. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He attended Eatons Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, James Harold Thompson Jr. Survivors in addition to his mother are his wife, Polly Carter Thompson of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Freddie (Sharon) Cave of Mocksville; a sister, Betty Ward of Statesville; two brothers, Reavis Thompson of Yadkinville and Roy Lee Thompson of Mocksville; three stepgrandchildren, Myra, Daren and Mickey Cave; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Rachel and Megan Cave. Memorials may be considered for the cemetery fund of Eatons Baptist Church, 495 Eatons Church Road, Mocksville, NC 27028, or the Kate B. LYNCHBURG, Va. -- A graveside service for Mr. Roger Millard Ayers, 43, formerly of Ararat, Va., will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hunters Chapel Church cemetery. Arrangements are by Howell Funeral Service in Mount Airy.

LEXINGTON -- Pamela Dean Brinkley Ball, 59, died Thursday morning, Oct. 26, 2000.
Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Welcome.

BARNETT
La VERGNE, Tenn. -- Mr. Charles Christopher "Chris" Barnett, 54, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, near Dickson, Tenn. He was born June 27, 1946, in Buncombe County to Charles M. and Sarah Ann Barnett. Mr. Barnett served in the U.S. Air Force and had been employed by Star Transportation Co. in Nashville, Tenn., since May 1992. He is survived by his wife, Donna Davis Barnett of the home; two sons, Chuck and Les Barnett of Asheville; a sister, Mrs. Laura Hall of Statesville; two brothers, George and Tommy Barnett of Asheville; and his mother and father-in-law, John C. and Louise "Lou" Davis of Charlotte. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Calhoun. Burial will be in Love's United Methodist Church cemetery, Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Pearl Norman Blackburn, 99, formerly of 7655 Anthony Road died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at the home of her daughter at 4211 Old Flat Rock Road with whom she had lived for several years. Mrs. Blackburn was born in Surry County a daughter of the late Peter and Betty McBride Norman. She attended Bethel United Methodist Church. She was a retiree of the Adams Millis Corp. and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Blackburn and a son, A.D. Blackburn. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Sadie B. and Ray Lasley of Kernersville; a son and daughter-in-law, Clay and Mary Ruth Blackburn of Manning, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, Virginia Blackburn of Kernersville; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Wood and the Rev. Mervin Garrison officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home.

BRINKLEY
PILOT MOUNTAIN -- Mr. William Gaston Brinkley Sr., 73, of 206 Mockingbird Lane died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born to the late Carl Lee and Grace Anna Gordon Brinkley; was a lifelong member of Sulfur Springs Baptist Church; and a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. Mr. Brinkley was the former owner of Gaston's Cafe in Bannertown. He is survived by his wife, Leona Beck Brinkley of the home; a son, William G. Brinkley Jr. of Mount Airy; two grandchildren, Ashley Brinkley and William G. "Chip" Brinkley III; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda and Harry Mabe of Greensboro, and Susan and Gene Martin of Pilot Mountain; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl Lee "Moose" and Sybil Brinkley Jr. of Conway, S.C., and James and Fannie Brinkley of Julian. In addition to his parents, Mr. Brinkley was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Grace Lynne Brinkley. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at Sulfur Springs Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Bob Thomas, the Rev. Paul Key and the Rev. Odell Sisk. Mr. Brinkley will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 at Howell Funeral Home in Mount Airy.

MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Mabel Wood Cleary, 87, the widow of Alonzo Cleary of Galax Trail, formerly of Wilkes County, died Wednesday night, Oct. 25 2000, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Cleary was born March 21, 1913, in Wilkes County to James Oliver and Josie Wyatt Wood. She was a member of Central View Baptist Church and a former member of Hilltop Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, James Douglas Cleary of Ruidoso, N.M.; a daughter, LaRue Cleary of Pilot Mountain; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at Miller Funeral Chapel, 180 Sparta Road, North Wilkesboro, with the Rev. Muncie Absher officiating. Entombment will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will be at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8:30 Saturday night.

DENDY
Mrs. Willie Lee McMoore Dendy, 84, of 2824 Rowell St. passed away Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center after a period of illness. She was born Aug. 13, 1916, in Concord to the late John L. Lindsay and Isabella McMoore. Mrs. Dendy was a longtime member of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church. In 1982 she joined Saint Stephens Missionary Baptist Church and attended until her death. She was retired from Thomasville Furniture Co. in Thomasville. She was preceded in death by a sister, Adelade Wilson; two brothers, William McMoore and James Ross; and a son, Earnest L. Lindsay. Mrs. Dendy leaves to mourn and cherish dear memories three sons, William McMoore (Lisa), Willie A. McMoore (Maggie) and Campbell Dendy (Brenda), all of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Carolyn L. Sims of Rockville, Md; 26 grandchildren, Earnest L. Mr. Ricky C. Dodson, 52, of Blowing Rock died Monday night, Oct. 23, 2000 as a result of an automobile accident in Blowing Rock. He was born Aug. 26, 1948, in Madison, Rockingham County, to Joel Webb Dodson and the late Sayre Price Dodson Lazar. He attended Lenoir Rhyne College and was vice president of Interstate Business Companies of America. He was a member of Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church in Sanford and attended First Baptist Church in Blowing Rock. Survivors include his former wife, Sarah Woods Dodson of Blowing Rock; a son, Ethan Dodson of Blowing Rock; three daughters, Meredith Dodson of Blowing Rock, Heather Dodson of Valdese and Cynthia Dodson of Granite Falls; his father of Fayetteville; three brothers, the Rev. Craig Dodson of Sanford, Ronald Dodson of Mocksville and Heath Dodson of Fayetteville; two sisters, Paige Davis of Sanford and Tammy Nichols of Cleveland, Tenn.; also a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sybil Dodson. Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at First Baptist Church in Blowing Rock, officiated by Dr. Steven Carreker. Burial followed in Woodlawn cemetery in Blowing Rock. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 350 Sunset Drive, Blowing Rock, NC 28605.
