Elois Smith Brown, 57, of 356 Rickard Rd., formerly of Walnut Cove, died October 21, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born June 18, 1942 to the late James Smith and Alma Ziglar. She was a Security Guard with Budd Services and a member of Bethlehem Apostlic Church. Surviving are one daughter, Gloria Woods; five sisters, Emma Moore and Betty Smith both of Detroit, Mich., Harriet Scales of Baltimore, Md., Sally Douthit of Winston-Salem, and Louise Johnson of Detroit, Mich.; four brothers, James (Geeda) Smith of Baltimore, Md., Bernard Smith, Daniel Smith, and Stanley Smith all of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Sherrod Smith, Shuntiya Smith, Ricarlo Woods, and Rishawna Woods; and two aunts, Claudia Simmons of Westfield, N.C. and Mattie Moore of Sandy Ridge. Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 27, 1999 by Frances S. and Jerry C. Gilmore, Jr., Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. CLARK
Mrs. Annie Virginia Collins Clark, 80, of Route 1, Sandy Ridge, N.C., died Monday, October 25, 1999 at Pell Care Nursing Center. She was born in Stokes County. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Clark and her daughter, Gladys Handy. Surviving are two sisters, Sadie Clark and Beatrice Clark both of Mayodan and one grandchild, Gary Dean Handy of Sandy Ridge. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at Sandy Ridge Presbyterian Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Colonial Funeral Home.
DARDEN
Mr. Otho Darden, Sr., of 3031 Airport Rd. was born in Amory, Miss. to the late Frank and Alice Darden. He was a resident of Winston-Salem for over 25 years. He was a retiree of the U.S. Air Force after 30 years of service having served in the Vietname War and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Darden was a retired hairstylist and was a barber/cosmetologist for Silas Creek Manor until his health declined. Mr. Darden was a member of Phillips Chapel Baptist Church where he was a member of the Sunday School department, past chairman of the Trustee Board, and past president of the Senior Usher Board. In the community he was a member of several organizations which included the Winston-Salem Beauticians Association Chapter #2 the Northwood Estates Know Your Neighbor Club, the March of Dimes, and the Retired Association of Armed Forces. He departed this life Sunday, October 24, 1999 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a period of illness. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. from the Phillips Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Ray L. Watlington officiating. Interment will follow in the Salisbury National cemetery with full military rites. He is survived by his spouse of the home, Coleen Cain Darden; four daughters, Patricia Darden of Atlanta, Ga., Opal Darden of Chesapeake, Va., and Donna Brown and Evette Darden (fiance', Bobby Lee Bradley) all of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Ernestine Walls of Fulton, Miss; three God-children, George and Doris Chunn, and Valeria Long all of Winston-Salem; a devoted niece, Barbara Lee Cain of Raleigh; a very devoted friends, Marcelette "Corkie" Verble of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. The cortege will assemble and leave from the residence at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem, 1100-C S. MOCKSVILLE -- Mrs. Louise Foster Essex, 76, of Call Road, died Monday, October 25, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Eaton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Alvin Pope, Dr. S.B. Warner, and Rev. Jack Luther officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery. Mrs. Essex was born January 24, 1923 in Davie County to the late Spencer J. and Maud Foster Foster and was a homemaker and partner with her husband in dairy farming. She was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she taught in the Children's Department for over forty years, served as church treasurer, member of the Administrative Board, and was a charter member of the United Methodist Women. She was a well known cook. Survivors include her husband of fifty-two years, H. David Essex; one son, James "Jimmie" Essex of the home; one sister, Ruth Foster Call of Mocksville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ernie (Duette) Foster.

MOUTH OF WILSON, VA -- W.J. "Jack" Fields, 75, of Mouth of Wilson, Va., passed away Sunday, October 24, 1999 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Sparta, N.C. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou Kirk Fields. He was born April 5, 1924 at Mouth of Wilson, Va. to J. Cam and Ruth Phipps Fields. He was Secretary-Treasurer of Fields Manufacturing Company, Mouth of Wilson, Va. for over 50 years. He was a member of Youngs Chapel Baptist Church, Mouth of Wilson, Va. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Kees Peer of Mouth of Wilson; a granddaughter, Nichole Peer of Mouth of Wilson; and double first cousin and spouse, D.G. "Red" and Betty Fields of Mouth of Wilson. The body is at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va. JONESVILLE -- Mrs. Beulah Johnson Garris, 91, of 121 Shaw Street, Jonesville, died Monday, October 25, 1999 at 8:35 a.m. at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Jonesville Pentecostal Holiness Church by Rev. J.P. Sizemore and Rev. Roger Collins. Burial will be in Sunrise cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. Garris was born in Wilkes County July 25, 1908 to Matthew and Lula Wood Johnson. She was a member of Jonesville Pentecostal Holiness Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther McKinley Garris in 1978; two sons, Connie Garris and Conard Garris; and one daughter, Dorothy Ann Wright in 1999. Surviving are six daughters, Ella Mae (Jim) Poindexter, Gerldine (Bobby) Key, and Genevieve (J.W.) Wolfe all of Dobson, Martha (Ronald) Absher of Elkin, Katie Darnell of State Road, and Ellen (Larry) Wilkins of Boonville; three sons, Leo (Norma) Garris of Elkin, Ted (Tina) Garris of Dobson, and Perry (Doris) Garris of Jonesville; one son-in-law, Spencer Wright of Dayton, Tenn.; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Ray Junior Mayberry, 75, of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, October 23, 1999. Mr. Mayberry was born August 10, 1924 in Pulaski, Va. to Fred R. and Ona Holderfield Mayberry. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Mayberry loved his neighbors and made his produce rounds each Saturday in which he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Marie Anders Mayberry. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Shirley Joyner (Wayne) of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Linda Alexander (Daniel) of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Gail Knowles (Scott) of Clemmons, Mrs. Cindy Bailey (Ronnie) of Galax, Va., and Mrs. Treasa Templeton (Gary) of Winston-Salem; five sons, Mr. R.E. Mayberry (Colene) of Clemmons, Mr. Sherman Mayberry of Clemmons, Mr. Ronnie Mayberry (Martha) of Winston-Salem, Mr. David Mayberry (Gracie) of Lewisville, and Mr. Eddie Mayberry (Mary Ann) of Tobaccoville; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one brother, Mr. Pete Mayberry (Barbara) of Galax, Va., and Evelyn Cameron, a very special friend and her son, Robert of Winston-Salem. MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Frances Prather Newell, 76, of 411 Country Club Road, Mount Airy, widow of John Atwood Newell, passed away on Sunday, October 24, 1999 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Newell was born in Surry County on November 12, 1922, daughter of the late Joseph William and Gertrude Young Prather. She was a homemaker and a member of Central United Methodist Church. Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Billee and Walter James Miller, Jr. of Mount Airy; two nephews, James Thomas Miller of Denver, Colo. and William Prather Miller and wife, Stephanie Graham Miller of Greensboro; one great-niece, Caitlin Graham Miller of Greensboro; and one great-nephew, Alexander Prather Miller of Greensboro. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Oakdale cemetery. The service will be conducted by Rev. Phillip Cole. MOCKSVILLE -- Virginia West Steelman, 84, of Somerset Court, Mocksville, died Monday, October 25, 1999 at her home. She was born August 31, 1915 in Davie County to the late W.W. "Bud" and Agnes Miller West. Mrs. Steelman worked as a nurse at Cardinal Care Center and with the Yadkinville Elementary School Special Education. She was a member of Yadkinville Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Steelman in 1970; a sister, Lois Deese; and two brothers, Walter Miller West and Lonnie Gray West, Sr. Surviving are three daughters, Agnes Vickie Tokarz and husband, Paul of Charlotte, Judy Steelman of Yadkinville, and Georgia Staples of Overland Park, Kansas; two sisters, Jessie Guentert and husband, Harold of San Antonio, Texas and Elizabeth Fortney of Maryville, Tenn.; two brothers, Luther West, Sr. and wife, Ostine and Roland West and wife, Betty all of Mocksville; three grandchildren, George Anthony Tokarz of Charlotte, Paula Parks of Huntersville, and Ginny Staples of Atlanta, Ga.; one great-grandson, Alan Parks; and her sister-in-law, Dorothy West of Mocksville. GERMANTON -- Mr. Wesley Mitchell Watts, 89, of Germanton, N.C. passed away on Sunday, October 24, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Watts was born July 25, 1910 to the late Squire Oliver and Ada Tuttle Watts. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Rosebud Christian Church. Mr. Watts was preceded in death by his wife, Ida (Noon) Browder Watts; and a granddaughter, Miriam Lynn Redmon. He is survived by one daughter, Margaret and her husband, Tommy Redmon of Germanton; one son, Allen and his wife, Lettie Watts of Germanton; sisters, Ida Alley of Walnut Cove, Beulah Carroll of Germanton, Virginia Alley of Danbury, Mary Hindricks of Winston-Salem, Mozelle Carroll of Winston-Salem, and Martha Petree of Rocky Mount; four grandchildren, Mark and his wife, Debbie Watts of Germanton, Jeffrey and his wife, Amy Watts of King, Sara and husband, Van Gravitt of King, and Susan and husband, Bobby Fulk of Germanton; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Carl Edward Widener, 73, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, October 25, 1999 at his home. He was born March 5, 1926 in Meadowview, Virginia to Walker Lynwood and Nannie Marie Thompson Widener. Mr. Widener was a decorated World War II Naval Veteran and was a retired painting contractor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Mae Brown Widener. Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Kay Widener of Winston-Salem; three sons, Edward Lee Widener and Stanley Joe Widener of Winston-Salem, and Ronnie Eugene Widener and wife, Heidi Lynne of Richmond, Virginia; three grandchildren, Ronnie Eugene Widener, Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Christopher Levi Widener, and Jessica Lynn Widener of Richmond; and a very close and dear friend, Virginia French of Lewisville. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel, Winston-Salem by Pastor Freddie Angles. AMOS
Mrs. Alma Mae Lowe Amos was born on January 9, 1918 in Winston-Salem, N.C. to the union of Hence Settle and Concerilla Penn Lowe. She was the eldest of three children. Alma Lowe Amos died Friday, October 22, 1999 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Alma Amos was educated in the public schools of Winston-Salem. She attended Winston-Salem Teachers College. Alma Amos was a retired employee of Winston-Salem State University. She was a member of the Atkins High School Classes of the Thirties and the Winston-Salem State University Classes of the Thirties. She was a member of Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church for many years, where she had been a former treasurer of the Sunday School, Vice President of the Co-Worker's Club and Christian Womens Fellowship I. Alma Amos was preceded in death by her second husband, James Artis Garrett, 1961; by a daughter, June Williams-Campbell, 1990; her husband, George Washington Amos, 1991; and a granddaughter, Candice Terresse Williams, 1995. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Dr. James P. Holland, 1998. Alma Lowe Amos is survived by four daughters and one step-daughter, Dr. Barbara K. Phillips (Garret), Constance K. Holland, Joan K. Phillips (Ervin), Nancy G. Armstrong (Charles), and Gretha G. Michael (Orpheus); one sister, Lillian Lowe Chandler; three grandchildren, Eleanor P. Phipps (Therron), Tammy W. Blackwell (Charles), and Charles (Chad) H. Armstrong, III; two great-grandsons, Garret B. Phipps and Chali' Blackwell; a niece, two great-nieces; a nephew, and their families, and many other relatives and many friends. Homegoing services will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at 3:00 p.m. at the Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church with Senior Pastor, Sheldon M. McCarter officiating. KING -- Mr. Odell Raleigh Baker, 74, of Scenic View Nursing Center, King, N.C., died there Sunday morning, October 24, 1999. Mr. Baker was born December 16, 1924 in Surry County, N.C. to the late Daniel Hubert and Rosie Esther Hicks Baker. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Friendly Chapel Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Max Ray and Carol Baker of Mt. Airy; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Lela and Bunzy Eaton of Pilot Mountain and Verla and R.W. Collins of Pinnacle; three grandchildren, Max Ray Baker, Jr., of Lowgap, Mitchell Mears and Chris Baker, both of Mt. Airy; two great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; one sister, Carrie Ruth Holt of Siloam; and two brothers, William Baker of Lexington and Virgil Baker of Dobson. A native of Forsyth County, he was born January 17, 1954 to Earnest Lee and Reatha Roark Johnson. Surviving are his brother, James E. Johnson of the home; two sisters, Lenda J. Willard of Walnut Cove and Phyllis J. Scott and husband, Bruce of Walkertown; two nieces, Lisa Scott and Melissa Johnson; and three nephews, Bruce Scott, Jr., Don Johnson, and Fred McKnight. Mr. Clyde R. "Buck" Patterson, 87, of Midpines Dr., died at Forsyth Medical Center on October 23, 1999. He was born in Forsyth County on May 15, 1912 to Arlindo and Clara Frances Brown Patterson. Mr. Patterson was a member of Pine Chapel Moravian Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. He was a past member of the NC National Guard and he had retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School Maintenance Department. Mr. Patterson was also known was an avid sports fan for many years. He is survived by his wife, Arietta Dease Patterson; one brother, Bedford Patterson; and one sister, Mary Simmons and her husband, Gene, all of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Pine Chapel Moravian Church with Rev. Matthew W. Allen and Rev. George Chitty officiating. The body will lie-in-state thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
RICHARDSON
Mr. Richard Alan Richardson, 45, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, October 23, 1999 at High Point Regional Hospital. Alan was born on February 19, 1954 in Guilford County, the son of John F. and Margaret J. Webb Richardson. He was a member of Wallburg Baptist Church and a former Sunday School teacher. He was also an employee of Thomasville Furniture Industries. He was a graduate of Mars Hill College and had a Masters of Divinity from Southeastern Theological Seminary. He was an Assistant Football Coach at Ledford Sr. High School and was a former college football player. On January 10, 1981, he married the former Pamela Potter, who survives of the home. Other survivors incldue his two sons, Dylan and Wesley; and a daughter, Tamer, all of the home; his mother, Margaret J. Webb Richardson of Thomasville; one brother, J. Terry Richardson and wife, Pam of Thomasville; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jerry and Ruth Potter; brothers-in-law, Philip Potter and wife, Cheryl, and Tim Potter; sister-in-law, Deborah P. Jordan and husband, Danny; one niece, Lauren Potter; and seven nephews, Chris and Cameron Richardson, both of Greensboro, Derrick Potter, Matthew Potter, Brandon Lassiter, Tyler Jordan, and Trevor Jordan. Mr. Richardson was preceded in death by his father, John F. Richardson in 1990. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Wallbury Baptist Church with Reverend J. Max Evington officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park cemetery in Thomasville. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Monday at Foster Funeral Home. The family respectfully requests that memorials in Alan's memory be made to the Wallbury Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box #46, Wallburg, N.C. 27373.
