THOMPKINS
Mr. Clarence Blair Thompkins, Sr., 67, of 559 Kinard Drive, passed away on Wednesday, October 20, 1999 at the Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center, following a period of illness. He was a native of Amherst, Va., born on June 11, 1932, the son of the late Zeb and Emma Blair Thompkins. He lived in Washington, DC and Toledo, Ohio for many years, and had lived in Winston-Salem, N.C. for the past three years. He was a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Celestine Lawson Thompkins. He is survived by his son, Clarence (Regina) Thompkins, Jr. of Glenarden, Md.; three grandchildren, Lafonda, Shanita, and Marcus Thompkins of Glenarden, Md.; one brother, Gordon (Mary) Thompkins of Temple Hills, Md.; two nieces, Bernice Wright of Washington, DC and Shirley Taylor of Upper Malboro, Md.; one nephew, Jerome Hicks of Georgia; his mother-in-law Odessa Lawson of the home; four very special and devoted friends, Deidre Anderson, Madonna Tanyhill, Stephanie Simmons, and William Highsmith; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with interment to follow in the Salisbury National cemetery. The family visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Russell Funeral Home. (RUSSELL)

THURSTON
WILSON -- Annabelle Thornton Thurston, of Wilson, N.C. died Saturday, October 23, 1999 at the Fitzgerald Health Care Center of Triad United Methodist Home. Born in Sampson County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Julia Weaver Thornton. Mrs. Thurston received her teacher's degree from East Carolina Teacher's College and taught first grade in Wilson's Mills. A longtime resident of Wilson, she was an active member of First Baptist Church, the Women's Club, and was a founding member of the Arts Council. She is survived by her daughter, Leigh Thurston Myers and son-in-law, Brad of Winston-Salem; and granddaughters, Elizabeth and Katherine. A private service will be held today at Centenary United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1467, Wilson, N.C. 27894 or Amos Cottage Guild, Office of Development, WFU School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27157-1021. Voglers, Main Street Chapel is serving the Thurston family.

WATTS
GERMANTON -- Mr. Wesley Mitchell Watts, 89, of Germanton, N.C. passed away on Sunday, October 24, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Watts was born July 25, 1910 to the late Squire Oliver and Ada Tuttle Watts. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Rosebud Christian Church. Mr. Watts was preceded in death by his wife, Ida (Noon) Browder Watts; and a granddaughter, Miriam Lynn Redmon. He is survived by one daughter, Margaret and her husband, Tommy Redmon of Germanton; one son, Allen and his wife, Lettie Watts of Germanton; sisters, Ida Alley of Walnut Cove, Beulah Carroll of Germanton, Virginia Alley of Danbury, Mary Hindricks of Winston-Salem, Mozelle Carroll of Winston-Salem, and Martha Petree of Rocky Mount; four grandchildren, Mark and his wife, Debbie Watts of Germanton, Jeffrey and his wife, Amy Watts of King, Sara and husband, Van Gravitt of King, and Susan and husband, Bobby Fulk of Germanton; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Rosebud Christian Church with Rev. Louis Locke officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. WILLIAMS
HIGH POINT -- Mrs. Christine Goldsmith Williams of 1207 Dartmouth Ave., High Point, N.C. formerly of 1824 North Jackson Ave., Winston-Salem, passed away Friday morning in High Point. She lived in High Point with her daughter, Mrs. Gloria Williams Huntley Bethea. She was born in Greenville, S.C. November 3, 1904 to the late John Henry and Maude Austin Goldsmith. She was the eldest of 12 children. She was educated in Greenville Public Schools, where she taught briefly. She moved to Winston-Salem in 1937 as the young bride of Zodie Williams, who preceded her in death. She was a Seamstress by trade and worked in a domestic capacity for many Winston-Salem families. She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church, where she served as Superintendent of Sunday School for many years, Vice President of the church Missionary Circle, Nurses Board, and Senior Choir. She was Recording Secretary of the Women's Missionary Auxiliary of the High Point Assoc. She was a Supervisor of Young People Missionary Circle. She was a member of the Deaconess Board. She was affiliated with the Jackson Community Club and Atlantic Social Club. She is survived by a loving daughter, Mrs. Gloria Williams Huntley Bethea of High Point; one granddaughter, Mrs. Robin A. Huntley Bristow (Randall); two grandsons, Randall and Ryan Bristow; five sisters, Mrs. Ethel Lean Lewis (Leo), Mrs. Winton Lewis (Jay); Mrs. Clara Wilson, Mrs. Marion Fergeson, and Mrs. Myrtle Ashmore, all of Greenville, S.C.; other relatives and friends, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy and Sharon Merriman; nieces; nephews; and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at 12 noon at First Calvary Baptist Church, with Rev. John Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 26, 1999 from 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon, thirty minutes prior to the services. The procession will assemble and leave from the home of the daughter, Mrs. Gloria Williams Huntley Bethea at 1207 Dartmouth Avenue, High Point, and route to the church at 10:15 a.m. for services. BROWN
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Mrs. Barbara Brown, 54, of 400 Manhattan Ave. passed away Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at the home of her brother, Milas Ross, following a period of illness. She was a native of Winston-Salem. born June 19, 1946, the daughter of Marty Lee Ross and James McWillis. She lived in New York for many years, was a member of the First Corinthian Baptist Church and was a retired employee of the Board of Education, State of New York. She was currently a member of Union Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Edward W. Brown of the home; two sons, Reginald Brown (Natonya) of New York, N.Y., and David Tyrone Brown of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Mary Ross and Marion Brown both of New York, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; two brothers, Perry Ross of Washington, D.C., and Milas Ross of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Margaret Williams of New York, N.Y., and Etta Brown of New Haven, Conn.; her dear mother-in-law, Voohress Brown; a sister-in-law, Eva McWillis of Winston-Salem; an adopted sister, Catherine Mzonali; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Sir Walter Mack Jr. officiating and Pastor Ed Derrick Porter as the eulogist. COLLICUTT
Ms. Catherine Anne Collicutt of Winston-Salem died of natural causes Oct. 21, 2000, at her home. Ms. Collicutt was school librarian and technology specialist at Philo Middle School and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary organization of woman educators. Catherine was born in Monroe, Wis. and moved to North Carolina in 1959. She studied at Agnes Scott University in Decatur Ga., received a bachelor's degree from UNC-CH and advanced degrees in library services at UNC-G. She was a much-loved member of Parkway United Church of Christ in Winston-Salem and volunteered for many causes. Catherine loved sports, literature and music and was a world traveler. She enjoyed her three dogs. She will be long remembered for her wit and intelligence, by her wide circle of friends and her family. Catherine is survived by her father, Charles Collicutt of Kernersville; her brother, Charles Collicutt Jr. of Chapel Hill, his wife Deborah and their sons, Charles III and Andrew; her sister, Beverly Foster of Minneapolis, Minn., her husband Gary and their sons, Benjamin and Thomas; and her aunt, Eleanor Stafford of Chattanooga, Tenn. The family is receiving visitors Tuesday and Wednesday nights in her home. A memorial service and reception to follow will be held in her honor at 3:30 p.m. at Parkway United Church of Christ, 2151 Silas Creek Parkway, located at the intersection of Irving St. and Silas Creek Parkway. The Rev. Thomas W. Mann will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to the church or charitable organization of your choice in her loving memory.

COLLINS
PILOT MOUNTAIN -- Mr. Aldine Collins, 69, husband of Trevella Collins of 3260 Old Westfield Road, passed away Sunday morning, Oct. 22, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Collins was born in Stokes County June 3, 1931, to the late William McKinley Collins and Dona Elizabeth Hunter Collins. Mr. Collins was a retired mechanic from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 31 years of service and was a member of Westfield Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Trevella Collins of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Stan Wood of Rural Hall; a son, Tim Collins of Pilot Mountain; two very special granddaughters, Kirsten Wood and Kianna Wood of Rural Hall; and two sisters-in-law, Celene Collins and Louise Collins of Westfield. Mr. Collins was preceded in death by three brothers, Orville Collins, Owen Collins and Graham Collins and a sister, Elsie Collins. A memorial service for Mr. Collins will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Jonathan Rogers and the Rev. Marion Ringer officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. DAVIS
Mr. Jerry Hayes Davis, 56, of 4406 Old Town Drive died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Davis was born March 13, 1944, to Leo Melvin and Molly Taylor Davis. He lived most of his life in Forsyth County and was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church in East Bend. He retired from Josten's Publishing Co. after 35 years of service. Mr. Davis is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Howard and husband Troy; and grandsons Jordan and Hunter; a son, Brian Davis and wife Tammy; and grandson Johnathan, all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Melvin Davis and Gene Davis, both of East Bend; a sister, Doris Stout of Martinsville, Va.; a special friend, Sherry Shaw; and other caring friends. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church in East Bend with the Rev. Sarah B. Kalish officiating. DAVIS
EAST BEND -- Ms. Paula Jean Davis, 53, of 3913 Mount Bethel Church Road died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Yadkin County on Sept. 28, 1947, to William Fred and Sally Geneva Lineberry Davis. She was a member of Mount Bethel Baptist Church. Surviving are her son, Randy Wayne Davis of East Bend; her mother, Sally Geneva Lineberry Davis of East Bend; two sisters, Ann Davis Long and Myrtle Davis Freeman, both of East Bend; three brothers, Howard June Davis of Clemmons, Bobby B. Davis of Yadkinville and William R. Davis of East Bend; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. Jerry Atkins, the Rev. Ottis Hurst and the Rev. Curtis Gibson. Burial will follow in the Mount Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday immediately prior to the funeral service.

DIXSON
Mrs. Phyllis Morgan Dixson, 80, of 2809 Reynolds Drive died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Dixson was born in Salisbury the daughter of Latta Solomon and Beulah Albright Morgan. She was raised in Winston-Salem and attended the public schools and graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School where she was a cheerleader. Mrs. Dixson was a devoted wife and mother, a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church and spent her summers in Roaring Gap with her family. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vogler's Reynolda Road Chapel with Dr. David Franklin Jarvis officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Surviving are her husband, Carl Eugene "Buddy" Dixson of the home; three sons, Carl Eugene "Buddy" Dixson Jr. and wife Lynn of Winston-Salem, Robert Morgan Dixson and wife Beth of Raleigh and Ronald Alvin Dixson and wife Shelly of Lewisville; four grandchildren, Kelly D. Furr, Phillip and Matt Dixson and Amy Dalton; and a brother, Hassel Morgan of Winston-Salem. The family wishes that any memorials be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

HEGE
CHARLOTTE -- Nancy Barwick Hege, 65, formerly of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church. A native of Charlotte, Mrs. Hege was born Feb. 27, 1935, the daughter of the late Samuel Clifton Barwick and Eleanor Elizabeth Todd Barwick. She was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem and was employed at Bank of America for 42 years, most recently as transactional services support and was also active in the Diversity Committee. Nancy was also a Democratic judge of precinct #59 and was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, where she sang in the church choir. Survivors include her husband, Charles Aubrey Hege Sr.; son Charles Aubrey Hege Jr. and wife Noteka; daughter Mary Randolph Hege; daughter Eleanor Hege Wallace and husband Garrett; son Samuel Clifton Hege and wife Carrie; brother Allan B. Barwick and wife Leah; 10 grandchildren; six nieces and nephews; and Honey. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the nurses and staff of the Harris Hospice Unit for their devoted and tender care. Michael G. Howard, 37, of Winston-Salem died Oct. 22, 2000. He is survived by four brothers, Terry Howard and wife Tina, Marvin Howard and wife Lorraine, Steven Howard and Sean Howard. MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Lena Smith Jessup, 85, of 527 Albion Church Road passed away Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, in Lowell. Mrs. Jessup was born Sept. 13, 1915, in Patrick County, Va. to Daniel Greene and Irene Anne Willis Smith. Mrs. Jessup was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith. Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Frances Lawson of Westfield, Linda Martin and husband Dewey of Mount Airy, Patricia Nichols and husband Harold of Lowell and Anne Rogers and husband Gordon of Westfield; three grandchildren, Jacob Rogers, Adam Rogers and Alex Case; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Doris Fultz and husband Charles of Richmond, Va. and Myrtle Wilson of Wylie, S.C.; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe Smith and wife Claudine of Wytheville, Va. and Woodrow Smith and wife Elizabeth of Westfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Raldolph Jessup and a granddaughter, Stephanie Rogers King. PETTIGREW
Ms. Ida Louise Pettigrew of 2751 Piedmont Circle, daughter of the late Charlie Wilson and Berniece Allison, was born Sept. 8, 1936, in Forsyth County. She was a lifelong resident of the city, where she attended the Winston-Salem Forsyth County public schools having graduated from Atkins High School where she was a Spelling Bee champion. Ms. Pettigrew was a former custodial worker and was of the Baptist faith. She departed this life Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home with the Rev. Marvin L. Pettigrew officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Janice Pettigrew, Verna Pettigrew and Latrice Pettigrew, all of Winston-Salem; three sons, the Rev. SANDY RIDGE -- Mrs. Judith Hutchens Sisk, 74, of 1240 Hancock Road died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Morehead Memorial Hospital. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the Mayodan Municipal cemetery. Mrs. Sisk was born in Randolph County. She was retired from Tultex Inc. and was a member of Cedar Grove Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Swanson Sisk; her parents, Thomas and Lillie Poindexter Hutchens; and a sister, Fern Hutchens Coe. Survivors include her sisters and brothers-in-law, Rachel Angel of Summerfield, Creola and the Rev. Leonard Atkins of Hurt, Va., and Adilee and Bill Matherly of Stoneville; godchildren Christopher and Elizabeth Matherly; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Colonial Funeral Home and other times at the home of Adilee Matherly, 410 Lakeside Drive Extension, Stoneville.

Mr. Willie Speaks, 67, of 239 Athens Drive passed away Sunday, Oct., 22, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a period of illness. He was a native of Iredell County born Feb. 22, 1933, the son of the late Gortney and Elizabeth Gregory Speaks. He had lived in Winston-Salem for the past five years. He was a former member of Friendship Baptist Church in Iredell County where he was a deacon and a volunteer patrol member. At the time of his death, he was a member of Saint Peters World Outreach Center where he was a security/parking attendant. He was an auto mechanic by trade. He is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy Dalton Speaks of the home; two daughters, Candace (Stephen) Dobson of Winston-Salem and Kendra (Donald) Timberlake of Stem; two sons, Stephen (Betty) Speaks of Pfafftown and Kevin (Haeng Sun) Speaks of Clarksville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Ruben Speaks of Winston-Salem, Hubert (Kathleen) Speaks of Yadkinville and Romie Speaks of Mount Airy; two sisters, Dorothy (LaSalle) Winston of Jonesville and Grace Douglas of East Liverpool, Ohio; and other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at St. Peters World Outreach Center with Dr. J.C. Hash Sr. officiating. WINFREE
Mr. Gareth Franklin Winfree, 53, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Sept. 5, 1947, to Jacob Franklin and Marie Motsinger Winfree. Mr. Winfree was employed with Royal Cake Co. for 30 years and was a member of Union Ridge United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his father. Surviving are his mother of Winston-Salem; a sister, Janice Marie Winfree, and a niece, Susan Marie Winfree, both of Charlotte; and a number of uncles, aunts and cousins. A funeral service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Union Ridge United Methodist Church by the Rev. Laura Greene. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. ANGELL
MOCKSVILLE -- Larry Lee Angell, 54, died at his home on Dogtrot Road in Mocksville on Thursday, October 21, 1999. Mr. Angell was born January 19, 1945 in Forsyth County to Edna Miller Angell and the late Cecil Lee Angell. Mr. Angell worked in construction most of his life and was a member of Cooleemee Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Pattie Jacobs Angell, of the home; two sons, Mark A. Angell and wife, Traycee, of Kannapolis, N.C. and Tony Angell, of the home; three daughters, Leigh Ann Angell of Salisbury, N.C., Tabitha A. Robinson and husband, Lane, of Indiana, and Krystal Dawn Angell, of the home; two brothers, Gray Angell and wife, Barbara, of Mocksville and Nat Angell and wife, Vickie, of Lexington; two sisters, Linda Hamilton and husband, Larry, of Mocksville and Nan Angell and Jimmy Blume, of Mocksville; and eight grandchildren. Mr. Angell was preceded in death by one sister, Joyce Stevens. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Saturday, October 23 at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 24 at Cooleemee Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Robert Goforth and Robert Creason officiating. Burial will follow at Dutchman Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Mocksville. Davie Funeral Service, LLC, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville, will be serving the Angell family.

BERRIER
Mrs. Ruby Stewart Berrier, 86, of 434 Duke Street, widow of Raymond Lewis Berrier, died Thursday morning, October 21, 1999 at the Oaks at Forsyth. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Friedland Moravian Church by Rev. Steve Craver and Rev. Norwood Green. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. Mrs. Berrier was born in Forsyth County, July 28, 1913, daughter of Thomas Wesley and Georgia Carmichael Stewart. She was a lifetime member of Friedland Moravian Church and retired from Bassick Sack after 27 years of service. Mrs. Berrier was preceded in death by a son, Jimmie Lewis Berrier; a grandson, Tony Berrier; two brothers, Luther Stewart and Bernie Stewart; and one sister, Pearl Matthews. Surviving are one son, Tommy Berrier, of the home; four grandchildren, Rickie Berrier and wife, Lou Ann, of King, Danny Berrier, of Winston-Salem, Kathy Woods and husband, Paul, of Kernersville, and Linda Snowden and husband, Chuck, of Reedy Creek; one sister, Bertha Hiatt, of Winston-Salem; and one brother, Bill Stewart and wife, Ruth, of Winston-Salem. The family requests that any memorials be made to the Building Fund at Friedland Moravian Church, 2750 Friedland Church Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27107.
