CHEEK
Mr. Jay W. Cheek, 64, of 4312 Eck Road, Jonesville, passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Cheek was born Jan. 2, 1937, to the late Paul and Stella Cheek in Yadkin County. He was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church in Jonesville. Surviving are his wife of the home, Nancy Myers Cheek; two daughters, Karen and Jim Hardy of Columbia, S.C., and Cindy and Mark Evans of Jonesville; two brothers, Bob Cheek and Ken Cheek, both of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Josh Evans, Jordan Evans and Sonya Gardner; a great-grandchild, Georgia Longworth. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mineral Springs Baptist Church in Jonesville by the Rev. Ed Yarboro and the Rev. Nick Cheek. Mr. Cheek will lie in state from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Crestwood Memorial Gardens in State Road. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin.

CONSTABLE
Mrs. Mildred Cline Constable died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie. She was born April 2, 1922, in Forsyth County to Lillie Cline. Mrs. Constable was a member of Harmony Grove United Methodist Church. Preceding Mrs. Constable in death was her husband, James W. Constable Sr. Survivors include two daughters, Josephine "Jo" Martin and her husband, James, of Mocksville, and Darlene Sheets and her husband, Keith, of Mocksville; a son, James Wesley Constable Jr. of East Bend; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with the Rev. Ken Furches officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance, Highway 158 across from Bermuda Run, telephone 940-5555, toll-free, 888-940-8511. DILLON
SANDY RIDGE -- Mrs. Lelia Elizabeth Mabe Dillon, 91, of 3050 Sheppard Mill Road passed from this life Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Stokes Reynolds Hospital, Danbury. She was born in Stokes County to the late Elder Walter J. and Margaret Bondurant Mabe. Mrs. Dillon was preceded in death by her husband, Hackett J. Dillon, in 1992. They were blessed to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary in November 1991. Two sisters and four brothers also preceded her in death. She was a faithful member of Northview Primitive Baptist Church and was the oldest member. In her last few years, when her memory seemed to fail, there were two things she never forgot, her meeting days at church and how to crochet her granny squares. Mrs. Dillon is survived by three daughters, Marie Dillon-White (Donald), Bonnie Hartsoe (Paul), all of Walnut Cove and Janie Watts (Henry) of Sandy Ridge; a special niece, "Bootsie" Fergurson (Tommy) of Siler City; three granddaughters, Becky McBride (Jerry), Beth Binder, all of Winston-Salem, and Sandra Stevens (Neal) of Greensboro; a grandson, Brent Watts (Rita) of Danbury; four great-granddaughters, Corey Cuthrell (Jonathan), Katie Stevens, Danielle and Leslie Watts; five sisters, Mary Bullins (Rufus) of Stokesdale, Ruby Dodson (Noel) and Kathleen Hutchins, all of Walkertown, Wilma Freeman (Joe) of Madison and Zula Manuel (Hubert) of Germanton; three brothers, Stanley Mabe (Lucille) of Stokesdale, Morris Mabe (Ruth) of Madison and Clarence Mabe (Maggie) of Walkertown; six stepgrandchildren, Ann McClarty (Scott), Jonathan White, Tim Hartsoe (Tami), Carol Dellinger, Lisa Kota (Russ) and Bradley Hartsoe; seven stepgreat-grandchildren, Jennifer Dellinger, David McBride (Amber), Cheyenne Kota, Paul, Brian, Kayla and Amber Hartsoe; a stepgreat-great-grandchild, Maison McBride. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Northview Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Milton Gunter. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at the home of Janie and Henry Watts. The family requests memorials be made to Northview Primitive Baptist Church, General Fund, c/o Mr. John Dillon, 4662 Swain Lane, Walkertown, NC 27051.

FARRELL
Ms. LuAnn Marie Sunday Farrell, 47, of 6198 Pine Hall Road, died at her home Dec. 3, 2000. Ms. Farrell was born Oct. 22, 1953, in Dunkirk, N.Y., to Alfred and Lucille Manzella Sunday. A memorial mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church by Father Berry. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery in Portland, N.Y. Ms. Farrell had lived in Forsyth County for the past 12 years and was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. She had been employed with Professional Insurance Planning Co. Survivors include Mike Race of the home; her mother of Brocton, N.Y.; a brother, Don Sunday and wife, Pat, of Winston-Salem; nephews Scott Sunday and wife, Lorrie, and their children, Nikolas and Lukus and Todd Sunday and his daughter, Taylor. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Suite 201, Winston-Salem, NC 27103-3200 or to the American Cancer Society, 4A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27405 or Alzheimer's Association-Carolina Piedmont NC Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3298. FERGUSON
Rosevelt Reginald Ferguson known to many as "Roc" departed this life Nov. 16, 2000, in Columbus, Ohio. He was born in Renbert, S.C., to Thomas Ferguson and Mary Stewart Ferguson. He moved to Winston-Salem in 1956, and was a graduate of Carver High School. He attended N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro and Columbia University in New York City. He was active in athletics, recreation and school activities at Fourteenth Street Recreational Center, Kimberly Park and Patterson Avenue YMCA and also Atkins and Carver High School football. He was a Baptist by faith. He was a local truck driver and security guard. He leaves to cherish his memory a sister, Rebecca Ferguson of Winston-Salem; six brothers, John Ferguson of Winston-Salem, James Ferguson of New York City, Joe Ferguson (Magaline) of Winston-Salem, Sammy Ferguson (Georgia) of Statesville, Johnny Ferguson of Richmond, Va., and Lawrence Ferguson (Andrea) of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Vickie Ferguson of Winston-Salem and many nieces, cousins and other relatives. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Precession will leave from 3724 Appromatics Drive. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Gilmore's Funeral Home.

FLYNT
Mrs. Edith Cockerham Flynt, 73, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Oct. 24, 1927, in Grayson County, Va., to Coy "Lonnie" and Mary "Lizzie" Russell Cockerham. Mrs. Flynt was a member of Snowhill Baptist Church in Galax, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Flynt, and a brother, Stuart Cockerham. Surviving are four sistters, Mrs. Clara Wilson of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Haliene Cole of Galax, Va., Mrs. Frances King and husband, Tommy of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Jeanie Brewer and husband, J.D. of Walkertown; two brothers, James Cockerham and wife, Ginny of Winston-Salem and Duffy "D.A." Cockerham and wife, Pat of Sandy Ridge; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Doris Cockerham of Galax, Va., Mrs. Peggy Reavis of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Lib Flynt of California; three special nieces and nephews, Greg King, Beth Hicks and Chris Hemrick and several other special nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at the Snowhill Baptist Church cemetery in Galax, Va. with the Rev. Ernie Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Snowhill Baptist Church, P.O. FRANCIS
DANBURY -- Ms. Irene Francis, 88, of Westfield, passed away Saturday evening, Dec. 2, 2000, at the Stokes Reynolds Hospital in Danbury. Ms. Francis was born May 27, 1912, in Stokes County to Joseph and Dester Monia Francis Francis. She was a farmer and an in-home caregiver. She is survived by a sister, Rachel Faries, of Greensboro; two nieces; two nephews; four great-nephews; a great-great-nephew and two special friends, Stephen Jessup, of Westfield and Louise Palmer of Westfield. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Big Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Family will receive friends at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec.4, 2000. The family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain.

GALLMAN
Mrs. Gladys "Nita" Cleckley Gallman, 92, formerly of Elizabeth Avenue, died Dec. 3, 2000, at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. She was born in Swansea, S.C., July 29, 1908, to Marsden and Carrie Hutto Cleckley. Mrs. Gallman was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church and a member of the Sarah Circle at Ardmore United Methodist Church. She was also a very active member of Ardmore Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Earl Gallman, in 1992. She is survived by a daughter; Mrs. Wayne (Jeanne) Bowman of Clemmons; a son, Richard E. Gallman II (Kathy) of Lewisville; five grandchildren, Martin H. Bowman, Beth Bowman, Scott, Brent and Greg Gallman; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Julia Joyner and Virginia Turkett, both of Irmo, S.C. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends after the service. Memorials may be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

GORTNER
Bettie Broyhill Gortner passed away in Naples, Fla., Dec. 2, 2000. She was surrounded by her family at her home at the time of her death. She was born in Lenoir and was the daughter of the late Satie and J.E. Broyhill. Mr. Broyhill was the founder of Broyhill Furniture Industries of Lenoir. Bettie attended Lenoir High School, Salem Academy and Converse College, where she majored in music. She married the late Willard A. Gortner in 1968. They lived in Clearwater, Fla., until 1992, then retired to Naples, Fla., and spent their summers at Hound Ears in North Carolina. Bettie attended Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church of Naples, where she was an active member of the hand bell choir. She was also an accomplished organist and belonged to the American Guild of Organists. She served as a member of the board of trustees of Salem Academy, Converse College, Spartanburg, S.C., Blowing Rock Hospital and Ruth Eckerd Hall Performing Arts Center, Clearwater, Fla. She was a "founding member" and advisory board member of "An Appalachian Summer Festival" of Appalachian State University. She is survived by six children, Jan Gordon of Palm Harbor, Fla., Kenneth Dickson of Boone, Michael Dickson of Apopka, Fla., Robert Dickson of Palm Harbor, Fla., Harvey Gortner and Terri Kenefsky of Clearwater, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Allene Broyhill Stevens Hellman, of Clearwater, Fla., and Lenoir and two brothers, Paul H. Broyhill of Lenoir, the retired president and CEO of Broyhill Furniture Industries, and former U.S. Sen. James T. Broyhill of Winston-Salem. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Dec. 16, 2000, at First Baptist Church, 304 Main St. NW, Lenoir, N.C. The family will receive at the church after the service. Interment will be at Little Rock Baptist Church in Boomer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Naples Inc., 1095 Whipporwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105 or Hospice of Caldwell County, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.

HAMBY
Mrs. Eula Elizabeth Owen Hamby, 88, formerly of Westfield, then later residing in Walnut Cove, passed away Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Hamby was born in Grayson County, Va., June 21, 1912, to Luther Winfield Owen and Myrtie Elvira Frances Owen. She was a homemaker, farmer and a member of Open Door Baptist Church in Walnut Cove. She is survived by her husband of the home, Jess Rufus Hamby; four daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and James Gwyn of Mount Airy, Della and Jimmie Long of King, Veneta and Teddy Edwards of Pilot Mountain and Cheryle and Charles Hopkins of Mount Airy; four sons and daughters-in-law, James and Tina Hamby of Pine Hall, Alton and Eunice Hamby of Walnut Cove, John and Silver Hamby of Thomasville and R.C. and Jamie Hamby of Mount Airy; 38 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Ethel Stuart of West Jefferson, Katie McNeil of West Jefferson, Parlee Baldwin of West Jefferson, Floya Smith of Mount Dora, Fla., Norette Brinagar of Crumpler and Jean Testerman of West Jefferson; two brothers, Reeves Owen of West Jefferson and Pozy Owen of West Jefferson. Funeral services for Mrs. Hamby will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home and Chapel by Brother Don Collins and Brother Dwayne Sands. Burial will follow at the Hamby Family cemetery in Walnut Cove. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, and at other times at the home of Della and Jimmie Long, 102 Pine Street, King. Mrs. Hamby was preceded in death by a sister, Erie Owen, two brothers, Glee Owen and Artie Owen, a grandchild and a great-grandchild. The Hamby family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain.

HARMON
Mr. James Ralph Harmon, 90, of Independence Village on Reynolda Road died Saturday at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Oct. 12, 1910, in Iredell County to Dr. Emmett E. Harmon and Fannie Myers Harmon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Theresa Morano Harmon of Richmond, Va., where they resided until her death in 1996. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Harmon was a graduate of Harmony High School and attended Catawba College and Appalachian State Teachers College. He worked for Glenn L. Martin Aircraft in Maryland during World War II and afterwards spent the remainder of his career with Eastern Airlines. He is survived by numerous cousins and other relatives. The family will receive friends at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Jack B. Yarbrough at Greenway Memorial Gardens in Richmond, Va. at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to The Children's Home, 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27013.

INGRAM
Ms. Jane Carroll Barber Ingram, 56, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Dec. 1, 2000. She was born to the late William Carroll Barber and Mary Elizabeth Parrish Barber Dec. 19, 1943, in Winston-Salem. A daughter, Juli Ingram of Augusta, Ga.; a son, Jeffrey Ingram, of Winston-Salem and a sister, Molly Hundley Cline, survive her. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at the Ardmore Moravian Church. The Rev. Kevin Frack will officiate. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

PRIDDY
Our beloved husband and father, Mr. Paul Ray Priddy, 60, of Winston-Salem went to be with our Lord Jesus Friday, Dec. 1, 2000. He will be greeted there by his father and mother, the Rev. Paul Matthew and Mollie McCollum Priddy. Mr. Priddy was born July 29, 1940, in Rockingham County. He was a member of the Fraternity Church of Brethren and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 35 years of service. Mr. Priddy was a devoted husband and father and will be dearly missed by his wife, Mrs. Wanda Johns Priddy of the home; a daughter, Niki Smith and husband, David of Winston-Salem; a son, Jeffrey J. Priddy of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Kristen Smith and Chad Priddy; his mother-in-law, Vena Jarvis Johns; sister, Kaye Carter and husband, Jerry and their children, Kimberly Paredes, Julie Farmer and Trent Carter of Charlotte; aunts and uncles including Martha Senter and the Rev. Robert Williard and wife, Ann, in addition to many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Forsyth Memorial Park with the Rev. Robert Williard, the Rev. Thomas Hanks and Dr. Darrell Cox officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fraternity Church of the Brethren, 3760 Fraternity Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127 or to Trinity Baptist Church, 2722 Hwy. 601 South, Mocksville, NC 27028.

RHODES
Mrs. Margaret Hyams Rhodes, 94, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000. She was born to the late C.W. and Margaret Hyams, Feb. 12, 1906, in Raleigh. A nephew, George Petrello, of Bowie, Md., survives her. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at the Forsyth Memorial Park's mausoleum chapel. The Rev. Jack Yarbrough will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Vogler and Son's Main Street Chapel.

RIDDLE
Mrs. Louise Hill Riddle, 78, of 1540 Polo Road died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Riddle was born in Welcome March 24, 1922, to Benjamin Franklin and Louzennie Catherine Everhart Hill. She had lived in Fayetteville before moving to Winston-Salem 20 years ago. She was a member of Trinity Moravian Church. Mrs. Riddle was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Francis Riddle. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ann Miller of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Moravian Church by Pastor Patricia Garner. Mrs. Riddle will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel.

STROBLE
Mr. Bill Needham Stroble Sr., 84, of 6235 Skylark Drive in Pfafftown died Friday afternoon at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Winston-Salem Aug. 7, 1916, to Donald Eugene and Virginia Mae Needham Stroble. Mr. Stroble served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for Sealtest Dairies for more than 30 years, first as a routeman and later as a security officer. He was a longtime member of Pfafftown Christian Church, where he founded Boy Scout Troop 918 and served as scoutmaster for 18 years. He also served the church as an elder and a deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline Conrad Stroble in 1994, and two brothers and two sisters. Surviving are his son, Bill N. Stroble Jr. of the home; his daughter, Cynthia Stroble Clinard and husband, Stuart of Clemmons; a second son, Edward Kemp Stroble of the home; five grandsons, Wesley Clinard and wife, Robin of Iredell County, Jeff Clinard and wife, Lindsay of Reidsville, Robert Clinard and wife, Melissa of Clemmons, Byron Gardner Stroble and Andrew Kemp Stroble, both of Winston-Salem; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Clinard, Luke Clinard and Nicholas Clinard and three stepgrandchildren, Lucas, Zachary and Everett Harrison and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pfafftown Christian Church, conducted by Dr. Tom Everton and Dr. Willie Davis. Interment will follow in Pfafftown cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boy Scout Troop 918, Pfafftown Christian Church, 3323 Transou Road, Pfafftown, NC 27040 or to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
