VARNER
Carolyn Varner departed this world Dec. 1, 2000, after a lengthy illness. She was a loving wife and mother and a loving friend and mother to many children of family and friends. Born in 1939, she was the daughter of the late Millard and Lola Adams. She was preceded in death by a son, Wendell Keith Varner V, a sister, Norma Cooper, and three brothers, Millard, Jack and Worth Adams. Survivors include her husband, Keith Varner; a son, Michael Varner of Rural Hall; a sister, Minnie Adams Meadows; two brothers, Fred "Acey" Adams and Joe Adams; her mother-in-law, Helen Varner; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn V. Ring and Pam Chilton and her faithful canine companion, Boogie. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel. Pastor Don Harvey will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County or Bethany Baptist Church. "We will miss her, but she will always be in our hearts and minds." WILBURN
George D. Wilburn, 81, of Fairview died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Flesher's of Fairview Health Center after an extended illness. He was born in Clinton, S.C., a son of the late Aubrey M. Wilburn and Elizabeth Bobo Wilburn and had also lived in Winston-Salem before moving to the Hendersonville area in 1998. He attended George Washington University and was employed as an electrical engineer with General Electric Aerospace Division for over 30 years, retiring in 1984. He was a veteran of both the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Air Corps and took part in the liberation of Europe during World War II. A member of the Masonic Lodge, he was of the Methodist faith. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Shirley M. Wilburn, who died in 1995; a son, Michael Aubrey Lawson; brother, R.J. Wilburn, and a sister, Dorothy Lawson. He is survived by his wife, Alyce Steeves Wilburn, whom he married in 1998; two sons, Hugh Wilburn of Boston, Mass., and Grant Wilburn of Clemmons; a daughter, Nancy Henken of Mobile, Ala., and four grandchildren, Bethany Wilburn, Lauren Wilburn, Ross Wilburn, all of Clemmons, and Stephen Henken of Mobile, Ala. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, at Shepherds Church Street Chapel. Burial will be at Arlington National cemetery later. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's local Alzheimer's Association. Thos. Shepherds and Son Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAMS
Mrs. Ethel Mae McHenry Williams, 73, of 606 Mulberry St. passed away Friday, Dec 1, 2000, at her residence. She was a native of Winston-Salem born Feb. 19, 1927, the daughter of the late Elsie Williams and Jessie Bowens. She was educated in the local public schools, was of the Baptist faith and was a devoted homemaker. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Brenda Williams. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Joyce A. Williams of the home; a son, John L. Williams; two grandsons, Terry Wilson and Tony Wilson; a great-grandson, Akeem Wilson; a sister, Luvenia (Nathaniel) Tucker; a special nephew, Tyrone C. Fair; two nieces, Gloria F. Holmes of Fort Washington, Md., and Jacquelyn F. (Walter) Tatum; two aunts, Sallie W. Hanes and Florence Williams of Philadelphia, Pa., and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, from the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. L.S. Werts officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. WILSON
Mr. George W. Wilson, 87, of Clemmons died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at The Elms at Tanglewood. He was born July 4, 1913, in Davidson County to Eli W. and Bessie Weaver Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a faithful member of Centenary United Methodist Church of Clemmons where he was chief usher for many years and member of the Methodist Men. He was a member of the Clemmons Civic Club and former owner of Wilson's Flower Shop. Survivors are his wife, Opal Brewer Wilson; son, George E. Wilson and wife, Eleanor (Jeep) of Advance; two granddaughters, Kerri Wilson and Aurelia Lagle and husband illy; two great-grandchildren, Sadie and Trey Lagle; and a sister, Gertrude Kidner of California. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Centenary United Methodist Church of Clemmons by the Rev. Barry Lemons and Greg Little. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mr. Dewey Phillip (Phil) Yates, 92, of 10067 Boone Trail, Purlear, lost his battle for life Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000. Mr. Yates was born Dec. 18, 1907, in Wilkes County. He was preceded in death by his father, Marcus Lafayette Yates; his mother, Doskie Welch Yates; his wife, Ina Nell Church Yates; his second wife, Mary Adams Yates; sons, Lawrence (Tommy) Yates, Jerry Allen Yates and two infant sons; three brothers, Tim, Ras and Crit Yates, and four sisters, Mamie Eller, Lola Belle Walsh, Bertha Greer and Dovie Yates. He is survived by a son and his wife, Rex and Vivian Yates of Purlear; a brother, T.T. Yates of Purlear; a grandson and his wife, Tony and Debbie Yates STROBLE Mr. Bill Needham Stroble Sr., 84, of 6235 Skylark Drive in Pfafftown died Friday afternoon at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Winston-Salem Aug. 7, 1916, to Donald Eugene and Virginia Mae Needham Stroble. Mr. Stroble served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for Sealtest Dairies for more than 30 years, first as a routeman and later as a security officer. He was a longtime member of Pfafftown Christian Church, where he founded Boy Scout Troop 918 and served as scoutmaster for 18 years. He also served the church as an elder and a deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline Conrad Stroble in 1994, and two brothers and two sisters. Surviving are his son, Bill N. Stroble Jr. of the home; his daughter, Cynthia Stroble Clinard and husband, Stuart of Clemmons; a second son, Edward Kemp Stroble of the home; five grandsons, Wesley Clinard and wife, Robin of Iredell County, Jeff Clinard and wife, Lindsay of Reidsville, Robert Clinard and wife, Melissa of Clemmons, Byron Gardner Stroble and Andrew Kemp Stroble, both of Winston-Salem; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Clinard, Luke Clinard and Nicholas Clinard and three stepgrandchildren, Lucas, Zachary and Everett Harrison and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pfafftown Christian Church, conducted by Dr. Tom Everton and Dr. Willie Davis. Interment will follow in Pfafftown cemetery. Darrell Poole and Dr. Monroe Huffman officiating. The family will be at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and at the home at 10067 Boone Trail, Purlear, from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. ASHBURN
Mrs. Doris Dance Ashburn, 81, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Ashburn was born Nov. 19, 1919, in Lynchburg, Va., to Maude Landrum Dance and Edward Thomas Dance. She was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church and was employed with Dr. R.L. Wall Jr. for over 30 years. Mrs. Ashburn was preceded in death by her husband, Conrad Clinton Ashburn Sr., and her son, Conrad Clinton Ashburn Jr. Surviving are a daughter, Rosa Lee Scarborough (husband Jack) of Shallotte; a son, Edward D. Ashburn (wife Mary) of Sanford; a daughter-in-law, Mararuth Ashburn Capell, of Wadesboro; five grandchildren, David Ashburn, Todd Ashburn, Kristin Ashburn Donaldson, Virginia Lee Scarborough and Steven Scarborough; and a brother, E.T. Dance, of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Ardmore Baptist Church with the Rev. Ty Talton and the Rev. S.R. Ashburn officiating. BRINTLE
DOBSON -- Mrs. Glenna Irzene Isaacs Brintle, 76, died at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, after a long illness. Mrs. Brintle was born in Lincoln County, W.Va., to the late Richard Verlin Isaacs and Eulah Pullen Isaacs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Kelly Brintle. She was a homemaker and had worked in the family business, Brintle Electric Service Co., and was a member of Dover Missionary Baptist Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Kathy Brintle of Dobson; a granddaughter, Laurie Brintle, of Baltimore, Md.; a grandson, Kelly Brintle, of Wilmington; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard G. and Jewel Isaacs, of Mount Airy; two nephews, Kevin Isaacs and Keith Isaacs, both of Mount Airy; and a special friend, Linda Johnson, of Mount Airy. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Dover Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Her body will remain at Davis & Son Funeral Home in Dobson until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Saturday evening at the funeral home and other times at Mrs. Brintle's home.

DARR
THOMASVILLE -- Mr. Fred Leonard Darr, 87, a resident of 3119 Old Greensboro Road, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, in Community General Hospital after a short illness. He was born Oct. 8, 1913, in Davidson County, the son of Solomon Mack Darr and Emma Sophia Leonard Darr. He had been a resident of this area all his life. He was retired from Thomasville Furniture Industries Plant V, retiring with more than 34 years of service. He was a former member of the Pilot Lions Club. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, the Lloyd Jackson Sunday-school class and the United Methodist Men. Mr. Darr served on various committees in the church, including the board of trustees, Memorial Day committee and the Administrative Council, and was very active in the Senior Citizens. He was married to Evva Nifong Darr, who preceded him in death Nov. 12, 1998. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Hugh (Pansey) Mayberry and Mrs. Bill (Peggy) Owen, both of Charlotte, and Mrs. Bobby (Betty) Almond of Thomasville; two sons, Clark Darr and wife Linda of Lexington and Robert Mack Darr of Newport News, Va.; a brother, Cletus L. Darr of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Fairview United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Wiseman, the Rev. Clyde Akers and the Rev. Steve Livengood officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and other times at the home. Mr. Darr will remain at the funeral home until placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family requests that the Lloyd Jackson Sunday-school class serve as honorary pallbearers and should meet at the church at 1:40 p.m. Sunday.

GOODIN
Mr. Abner David Goodin, 67, of 3608 Carver School Road passed away Thursday morning at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Sumter, S.C., and had lived here since early childhood. He was a member of United Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member of Missionary Group #3 and attended Sunday school. He was employed at Carolina Narrow Fabric Co. until his health failed. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Barbara J. Goodin of the home; three sons, Don Robinson (Gwendolyn), Barry Robinson (Cynthia) and Ray Anthony Robinson, all of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Shelia Robinson and Darlene Robinson, both of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy McElvain of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Mrs. Cleo McGriff (Andrew) of Winston-Salem; a brother, Reynolds Goodin of Charlotte; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends; and devoted friends Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Opal Stone, Mr. and Mrs. Booker and Eire Williams, all of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at United Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. J. Ray Butler officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Monday 30 minutes prior to the services. The procession will assemble and leave from the home, 3608 Carver School Road en route to the church at 1:10 p.m. Monday. Johnson-Howard-Robinson Home of Memory is in charge of all services and arrangements.

HAROLD
KING -- Mrs. Vergie Ellen Bowman Harold, 90, of Village Care, formerly of the Franklin community, passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000. Mrs. Harold was born in Patrick County, Va., April 25, 1910, the daughter of the late Percy Lee and Mary Etta Belton Bowman. She was a member of Doe Run Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Ruby Frances, and son-in-law Paul Scheetz of Elon College; two sons, O.J. Harold of Indianapolis and Dennis R. and daughter-in-law Beverly Harold of Nashville, Tenn.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Edith Sawyers and husband, Arville, of Mount Airy; several other nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Clara Bowman of Mount Airy and Nellie Bowman of Ararat, Va. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Harold was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Homer Bowman. Burial will follow in the Harold Family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time for the services at the funeral home. HEAD
Mr. Donald Head, 57, died Thursday evening, Nov. 30, 2000, at his home. He was born May 3, 1943, in Thomasville to Lindsay and Kathleen Myers Head. Surviving are a daughter, Judy Thacker (Scott) of Winston-Salem; four sons, Jimmy Head, Eric Head, Jerry Snow (Trisha) and Rodney Snow (Gina), all of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Sherrie Widener, Jimmy Head Jr., Matthew Myers, Britney Kilby, Briana Snow and Schylor Head; his mother of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Joan Webb (Kenneth) and Carolyn Walker; and two brothers, Tommy Head (Nadine) and William Head. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Rennie Adcock officiating.
