GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Betty Ruth Howard, 53, of Don Drive died Nov. 30, 2000. Born in Rural Hall, she was a daughter of Robert Norman and Ruth Louella Tuttle Gentry of Rural Hall. She was a registered nurse on the Rehabilitation Floor of St. Francis Hospital. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and was president of the Inez Goldsmith Circle. Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Ronald G. Howard of the home; a daughter, Rebecca Howard of the home; three sons, Christopher G. Howard and his wife, Ashley, of Wilmington and Chad Howard and Todd Howard of the home; a brother, Wade Norman Gentry and his wife, Sharon, of King; and nephews Scott and Michael Gentry. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul United Methodist Church and burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Woody Smith will officiate. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Drive, Greenville. JOYNER
ADVANCE -- Mrs. Mary Rose Frye Joyner, 67, of N.C. Highway 801 S., died Thursday morning at Forsyth Medical Center after a short illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Old Fulton Methodist Episcopal Church, South, with the Rev. Rusty Morrison and the Rev. Kermit Bailey, the Rev. Mark Denton and the Rev. Sue Northcraft officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. They requests that memorials be considered for the Emergency Food and Medicine Fund, Davie County Department of Social Services, c/o Ms. Karen Smith, P.O. Box 517, Mocksville, NC 27028. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday. Mrs. Joyner was born in Davie County on May 11, 1933, to the late Samuel David and Amanda Waller Frye, and was retired from Ingersoll/Rand with 18 years of service. She was a graduate of the Shady Grove High School in Advance, class of 1951. Mrs. Joyner was a lifelong member of Fulton United Methodist Church; she currently attended the Episcopal Church of the Ascension at Fork. At Fulton Church, she was the church membership secretary for many years. She was a member and coordinator of the Food Closet Committee. Mrs. Joyner was a well-known community volunteer, and was instrumental in the restoration of the Old Fulton Methodist Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Harles Joyner on July 30, 1985. Survivors include two sons, David Joyner of the home and Dean Joyner of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Marlena Joyner Parker, Michael Joyner and Ashley Joyner; a sister, Mrs. James (Mildred) Ryan of Advance; and a niece, Mrs. Ernie (Tonia) Harr of Charlotte.
LOFLIN
THOMASVILLE -- Mrs. Bessie Lily Byerly Loflin, 81, of 831 Friendship-Ledford Road, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at her home. She was born Nov. 17, 1919, in Davidson County, a daughter of Levi H. and Bashie Crouse Byerly. She was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church and the Ladies Bible Class. On July 30, 1938, she was married to Ray Alison Loflin, who survives of the home. Also surviving are two sons, Donald Ray Loflin and his wife, Shirley, of Friendship-Ledford Road; and Richard Lee Loflin Sr. and his wife, Helen, of Chapsworth Drive, Trinity; a sister, Mrs. Clara Weavil, of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Stephen Ray Loflin and Melissa Ann Yokeley; and four great-grandchildren, Whitney Nicole Loflin, Joshua Stephen Loflin, Matthew Wayne Loflin and Hannah Leigh Yokeley. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Richard Lee Loflin Jr. A funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Family Funeral Care Chapel by the Rev. Jacqueline Elliott, the Rev. Jeff Burton and the Rev. Ardis Payne. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery. MARR
Mr. Harry Coburn Marr, 88, of 2396 Maplewood Ave. died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at The Oaks at Forsyth. Mr. Marr was born Dec. 17, 1911, in Bryson City to Julius C. and Berdell Shook Marr. He spent most of his life in Winston-Salem and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He took a very active role in the church and was a member of the Clay Chandler Bible Class, the Centenary Seventy, and participated on the official board. Harry was president of the Children's Home Alumni Association and was a member of the Alumni Executive Board of the Home. During World War II, he saw 42 months of service in the U.S. Army. Mr. Marr retired from the Winston-Salem Journal and Sen tinel in 1976 after 40 years of service. He served as president of the Winston-Salem Typographical Union for five years and also served as their secretary/treasurer for five years. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Leta and Ruth. Surviving are his wife, Marcia Bourne Marr; his children, Caroline H. Marr of Greensboro, Sally D. Marr of Houston, Texas, Harry B. Marr and Melissa Marr of Apex; two grandsons, Bo and Matt; a sister, Dorothy Thayer; and nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Forsyth Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roland T. Barnhardt officiating. A reception will be held at the church after the service. Mr. Eldred Maynard Masters, 84, of 1407 Capri Road, died Friday afternoon at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Monday at Voglers Reynolda Road Chapel. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Masters was born in Carbondale, Pa., April 19, 1916, the son of William Henry and Alice Parker Masters. He retired from Western Electric in 1981, after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was an avid golfer and a member of Pine Brook Country Club, the Moose Lodge, the Wake Forest University Deacon Club and the Tarheel Senior Golf Association. He was a member of Crews United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Olive M. Masters, in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Helen Stegall Masters, of the home; a daughter, Barbara M. (Robert) Fulp, of Winston-Salem; two sons, Douglas J. (Colleen) Masters of Clemmons and Scott W. Masters of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Christopher R. Fulp, Randall W. Fulp, Elizabeth Fulp Thomas, Stacey S. Masters and Jennifer E. Masters; a great-grandson, Grayson W. Fulp; a sister, Margaret Buchanan of Lindhurst, N.J.; two stepdaughters, Gail Fish of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Marie Smith of Clemmons, and a stepson, Rick Stegall, of Winston-Salem. Mrs. Peggy Jane Clowers Sinclair Rash died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000. She had been in declining health for several years. She was born Dec. 8, 1926, in Forsyth County to James Wesley and Nannie Sue Murphy Clowers. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Carl Victor Sinclair and Jack Burris Rash; two brothers, Dale Clowers and Earl Clowers; and a sister, Hazel Smith. She is survived by a son, Carl Victor Sinclair Jr. and wife, Dixie; two beloved grandsons, Victor Holden and Victor Christian Sinclair; three sisters, Kathleen Bullard, Mary Phillips and Carolyn Sinclair; a brother, Jack Wesley Clowers and wife, Ann; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem.

Mr. Shelby Gene Roberts, 60, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Nov. 28, 1940, in North Wilkesboro to Verna Roberts Watkins. Survivors include his wife, Annie Holland Roberts of the home; two sons, Fred Holland and Monte Holland of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Patty Barnes of Mayesville; two grandchildren, Donnie and Andrea; a great-granddaughter, Rachael; seven brothers; and three sisters. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Mohammad Nasseri. ROGERS
STUART, Va. -- Mr. Bobby Lee Rogers, 66, of Stuart, Va., died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was born in Stokes County to Annie Hall Rogers of Westfield and to the late Ernest Rogers. In addition to his father, Mr. Rogers was preceded in death by five half-brothers, Harry, Moir, Wesley, William and Ralph Rogers and two half-sisters, Louvie Moore and Mary Simmons. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was the co-operator of Friendly Barber Shop in Stuart, Va., and had been a barber for over 40 years. He was a member of Peters Creek Baptist Church, Mountain Home Lodge 263, the Kazim Shriners and VFW Post 7800. In addition to his mother, Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife, Annie Gray Rogers, of the home; a son, Timmy Lee Rogers, of Greensboro; a daughter, Ms. Sherry R. Wilkins, of Scottsburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Angel Dawn Wilkins and Andrew Rogers Wilkins; two sisters, Betty Ruth Shelton, of Westfield and Agnes Young of Rural Hall; three brothers, Ernest Rogers Jr. of Winston-Salem, Benny Rogers of Germanton and Johnny Rogers of Winston-Salem and a half-sister, Dillie Tudor, of Stuart, Va. Funeral services for Mr. Rogers will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Peters Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Payne, the Rev. Joe Shockley and the Rev. Bill Watkins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with masonic rites by Mountain Home Lodge 263 and military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. SCOTT
CLEMMONS -- Mrs. Lorraine Howard Scott, 70, died Friday morning, Dec. 1, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Dec. 1, 1930, in Davie County to Tom and Dora Howard Howard. Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruby Bryant, Lona Howard, Ruth McKnight and Mary Howard. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Helen Holder, of Clemmons; a brother, Thomas Ross Howard, of Advance; two very special friends, Odell Dixon and Nellie Scott; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Forsyth Medical Center ICU #3 and Drs . Day, Hinson and Kirkland. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Harold Zimmerman. Burial will follow in the cemetery. STEWART
Mr. Charles Abner Stewart Jr., 79, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, after an illness with cancer. Mr. Stewart was born in Rockingham County Feb. 6, 1921, to Charles Abner and Sallie Morton Stewart. He was of the Baptist faith. He lived most of his life in the Ogburn Station community. Mr. Stewart was a plumbing contractor and had owned Stewart Plumbing Co. for 20 years. Mr. Stewart was retired from the city of Winston-Salem as a plumbing inspector after 15 years service. Mr. Stewart was a former member of Mineral Springs Volunteer Fire Department with 22 years service, where he served several years as chairman of the board. He was a member of the North Forsyth Civic Club and the High Rock Lake Association. He had served several years on the board of directors at Northwestern Bank, Ogburn Station branch. He was a 32nd degree Mason of Corinthian Lodge #542, Greensboro. He was a Shriner and a member of Oasis Temple. Mr. Stewart served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was in campaigns and battles in Central Europe, Northern France, the Ardennes and the Rhineland. Among the citations and decorations he earned were the EAMET Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, the American Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Clyde M. Stewart; and a sister, Ramona Ann Stewart. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Coram Stewart; three sons, Ronald J. Stewart and wife, Lynn, of Kernersville, Charles S. Stewart of Lexington and Mark A. Stewart of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Karen G. Snider and husband, Scottie, of Lexington and Connie J. Mitchell and husband, Steve, of Apex; four grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy "Dottie" Stewart of Stanleyville; and two brothers, Thomas Moody Stewart and wife, Loran, of Pine Hall and Bobby Lee Stewart and wife, Nell, of Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or the donor's choice. Mrs. Bessie Adams Watford, 88, formerly of 112 Cecil Drive,died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Springwood Care Center of Forsyth. Mrs. Watford was born Feb. 12, 1912, in Yadkin County to Willis Lee and Frannie Selena Evans Adams. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem and was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church. Mrs. Watford was retired from the Container Corporation of America. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rupert Gibson Watford. Surviving are her daughter, Hettie W. Pittman of Winston-Salem; three granddaughters, Darlene Cantrell of Winston-Salem, Vickie Summey of Lewisville and Marty Young of Walnut Cove; a grandson, Wayne Pittman of Winston-Salem; eight great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Mineral Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Cecil Cave Jr. officiating. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. PILOT MOUNTAIN -- Mrs. Barbara Ann Bowman Niston Welborn, 63, of 2568 Old U.S. Highway 52 S., wife of Richard Ervin Welborn, passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Welborn was born in Surry County May 13, 1937, daughter of the late Charles Norwood and Ruth Magdalene Collins Bowman. She was retired from Quality Mills and a member of Mount Airy Church of God. Survivors include her husband, Richard Ervin Welborn, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marisa and Mark Richardson of Winston-Salem and Crystal and Andy Pell of Pilot Mountain; and five grandchildren, Adam Richardson and Jessica Richardson, both of Winston-Salem, and Drew Pell, Kelly Pell and Adam Pell, all of Pilot Mountain. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Welborn was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha Niston. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Mount Airy Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Charles Powers and the Rev. Deward Scott. Burial will be in Skyline Memory Gardens. NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mr. Charles William Billings Jr., 51, of Linda's Road died Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mr. Billings was born Sept. 25, 1949, in Surry County to Charles Williams Billings Sr. and Naomi Webster Casstevens. He attended Haymeadow Baptist Church and was an employee of Kincaid Furniture. Surviving are his wife, Audrey Combs Billings of the home; two daughters, Connie Loretta Billings and Bonnie Sue Billings, both of the home; his mother of Jonesville; and two brothers, Tommy Billings of Roaring River and Steve Billings of Hays. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 at Haymeadow Baptist Church, Haymeadow Baptist Church Road, Hays, with the Rev. Doug Triplett and the Rev. David Greer officiating. TOBACCOVILLE -- Mrs. Betty Tucker Bowen, 67, the widow of the late Ralph E. Bowen, died at home in Tobaccoville following several years of declining health. A native of Forsyth County, she was born June 9, 1933, to the late Aubrey and Blanche Denny Tucker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Ralph E. Bowen, on Oct. 24, 1984; two brothers, Glenn Tucker in 1947 and Earl Tucker in 1999. Mrs. Bowen was of the Baptist faith and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy B. Bracey and husband Gerald of Winston-Salem; a son, Glenn Bowen and his fiancee, Becky, of Tobaccoville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna Mae Lineberry of Winston-Salem; a brother, Marvin Tucker and wife Mary of East Bend; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Crestview Memorial Park with the Rev. Jonathan Rogers officiating. FITZGERALD, Ga. -- Mr. Robert L. Fountain Sr., 85, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1 at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald, with Dr. Gene Wilder and the Rev. Gerald Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery, Fitzgerald. Mr. Fountain was born Feb. 8, 1915, in Irwin County, Ga. to H.H. Fountain and Mary Faulkner Fountain. He had lived in Irwin and Ben Hill counties all of his life. Mr. Fountain was a retired conductor with CSX Railroad after 44 years of service, a World War II U.S. Army Corps of Engineers veteran and a member of the Baracca Sunday school class at First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the United Trainmen Union, the Elks Club, the American Legion, Hardee's Coffee Club and a former employee of the Georgia State Police. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Myra N. Fountain of the home; a son, Robert L. "Bob" Fountain Jr. of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Marylyn F. Haygood of Macon, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. William Anderson "Bill" Harpe, 60, of Sunset Drive died Wednesday afternoon at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Eaton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charles Bullock and the Rev. Danny Shore officiating. Burial will be in Rose cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Friday evening from 7 to 9. Mr. Harpe was born in Davie County June 19, 1940, to the late Elbert H. and Hazel Anderson Harpe and had been a salesman with Mocksville Builders Supply for 31 years. He was a member of Mocksville First Baptist Church. He had coached Little League Baseball and was a well known champion skeet shooter. Mr. Harpe was a member of the Home Builders Association, a former member of Mocksville Downtown Revitalization and a graduate of Davie County High School class of 1958. Surviving are his wife, Brenda Day Harpe of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Preston (Jennifer) Neely of Mocksville; a son, William Jeffrey Harpe of Mocksville; a granddaughter, Amber Harpe; and a sister, Judy Harpe of Mocksville.

Mr. Edward Robert "Bob" Hoffman, 61, born in Winthrop, Mass., died early Thursday morning, Nov. 30, 2000. Bob had lived in Boston, West Palm Beach, Fla. and Winston-Salem. Bob is survived by his wife, Teresa M. Hoffman of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Elizabeth W. Hoffman of West Palm Beach and Heather L. Hoffman of Newton, Mass.; a son, Scott W. Hoffman of West Palm Beach; and a stepdaughter, Tina Lombardi and her husband, John, of Welcome. Bob will be forever remembered for his hard work, generosity, humor, as a provider for his family and for his postive outlook on life. Survivors include two sons, David Joyner of the home and Dean Joyner of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Marlena Joyner Parker, Michael Joyner and Ashley Joyner; a sister, Mrs. James (Mildred) Ryan of Advance; and a niece, Mrs. Ernie (Tonia) Harr of Charlotte.

MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Charlie Hugh Lakey, 69, of Horse Shoe Trail died Thursday at Davie County Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Eaton Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Darrell Cox and the Rev. Glenn Sellers officiating. Burial will be in Blaise Baptist Church cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Mr. Lakey was born April 14, 1931, in Davie County to the late Hiram Austin and Margaret Todd Lakey. He served in the Korean conflict, was a retired tool and die maker with AMP Inc., and was a member of Blaise Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Dot Hilton Lakey of the home; a daughter, Marsha L. Dayton and husband George of Miami, Fla.; two sons, Douglas H. Lakey and Angela N. Lawrence, and Charles M. Lakey and wife Scarlett, all of Mocksville; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; six stepchildren, Ronnie W. Hilton of the home, L. Keith Hilton of Mocksville, Donna H. Morrison of Mount Ulla, Brenda H. Howell, Robert A. Hilton, Bonnie H. Brown, all of Mocksville; 10 stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Cecil and Clyde Lakey; and two sisters, Ruth Lakey and Dorothy Walker, all of Mocksville. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Lakey.
