POORMAN
Mr. Frank William Poorman, 87, of Winston-Salem died at Scenic View Health and Rehabilitation Center in King after a period of declining health. A native of Trendway, Ohio, he was born Oct. 3, 1913, to the late Cameo W. and Mary N. Poorman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Archie, Gifford, Charles, Ralph, Elmer and Bernard Poorman, and a son-in-law, Ernest Matthews Sr. Mr. Poorman was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir. Mr. Poorman was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Italy during World War II. Before induction into the military, Frank worked as a cook in the CCC Camp and a cook with the Pennsylvania Railroad. After his military service he was employed with Sealtest Corp., Electronic Wholesale and the Hasting Co. At the time of his retirement, Mr. Poorman was a self-employed certified public accountant. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Marie Styers Poorman; a son, Douglas William Poorman and wife Suzanne of Oldtown; a stepdaughter, Margaret Hamm Matthews of Burlington, Iowa; a grandson, Matthew Poorman of Oldtown; four step-grandchildren, Ernest Matthews Jr. and wife Lynn of Everett, Wash., Delores Matthews Barthel and husband John of Iowa City, Iowa, Jacob Matthews and wife Shelia of Greenville, Iowa, and Kimberly Matthews McAfee of Corvell, Iowa; 18 step-great-grandchildren; a step-great-great-grandchild; a brother-in-law, Dayton Haynes of Winston-Salem; seven sisters-in-law, Betty S. Hunter of Charlotte, Sarah S. Ellis of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Ruby S. Styers and husband Sam of Winston-Salem, Mary Alice F. Styers and husband Harold of Patrick Springs, Va., Pauline R. Styers and husband John of Winston-Salem, Sue T. Styers and husband Frank of Lexington, and Frances Poorman of Ohio. Also surviving are a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Rural Hall Chapel. The Rev. Dewey Griffin and the Rev. Patricia Suggs will officiate. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, 690 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106-5395.

SHIDLER
ADVANCE -- Mrs. Genevieve "Genny" Ankrum Shidler, 81, of Bermuda Village died Nov. 24, 2000. Mrs. Shidler was born Aug. 19, 1919, near Garwin, Iowa, to the Rev. Freeman and Viola Myers Ankrum. She was a graduate of Hopewell Township High School in Gratiot, Ohio, and attended Ashland College and Wayne State University. Mrs. Shidler was a teacher in the Perrysville, Ohio, schools for two years. She married Lt. Robert Wharton Shidler in Ashland on Jan. 10, 1943. Mrs. Shidler lived in many states and countries with her husband, who served in the U.S. Army. Col. (Ret.) Shidler preceded her in death Oct. 18, 1989. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Wallette Shidler of Honolulu; a son, Stephen Shidler of San Francisco; a granddaughter, Summer Lei Shidler of Honolulu; a brother and sister-in-law, Mary Alice and Willard Bowman of Boones Mill, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and her friend, John Pastor of Advance. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Laird Ankrum, in 1987. Services will be held in Hawaii later . Arrangements by Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel.

SMITH
Private graveside services for Mary Tobias Hollis Smith will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, in Greenlawn cemetery with worship service and celebration of her life to follow at 2 p.m. in Dillon First Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Cooper Funeral Home in Dillon. Mrs. Smith, 84, formerly of Dillon, died Saturday, Nov. 25, at Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem. Born in Jonesville, Union County, S.C., Sept. 29, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Orin Bomar Hollis Sr. She was the oldest of eight children. Growing up she was a strong Christian leader in her family and community. She met and later married Mr. Walter Clyde Smith at the home of her aunt, Mabel Collins on Sunday, Aug. 7, 1938. She and Walter spent many happy years together where they began to raise their family in Franklin, Tenn., Bennettsville, S.C., and Raleigh and then for almost 50 years in Dillon, S.C. "Miss Mary" was a distinguished leader of the First Baptist Church of Dillon where she taught and served for many years. She was a strong believer in supporting children and youth in their education and in leading others to Christ. Her life was truly an example of Christian service and love. She will be long remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister and friend. She will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her as an outstanding example of God's love for us. Survivors include her husband, Mr. Walter Clyde Smith of Winston-Salem, formerly of Dillon; daughters Rosemary Smith Gaddy of Atlanta and Suzanne Truett Smith Williams of Winston-Salem; sons David Bomar Smith and wife, Louise, of Conway, S.C. and Walter Hollis Smith and wife, Christine, of Alamosa, Colo.; grandchildren Mary Elizabeth Gaddy Burns and husband, Allen, of Greensboro, Elizabeth H. Smith and J. William H. Smith of Conway, Mary-Hollis Elizabeth Williams and Benton Walter Williams of Winston-Salem; great-grandchildren Wesley James Burns and Harrison Allen Burns of Greensboro; sisters Alice Lewis of Wilmington and Betty Hollis of Spartanburg, S.C.; brothers Orin Hollis and wife, Zora, of California, Tom Hollis and wife, Max, and Myers Hollis and wife, Judie, all of Spartanburg, Dr. Truett Hollis of Pasadena, Calif. and Richard Hollis of Alexandria, Va.; many nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Sara Caldwell of Union, S.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to either Mary Tobias Hollis Smith Memorial Fund, First Baptist Church, 400 N. THOMPSON
DURHAM -- Mrs. Jacqueline Lacy Thompson died Nov. 26, 2000. She was born in Scottsburg, Va., the daughter of Walter E. and Evangeline Pully Lacy and was married to the late Charles Madison Thompson Sr. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth T. Colclough and her husband, Loris R. Colclough of Winston-Salem; two sons, James B. Thompson and his wife Lee Aldridge Thompson, and Charles M. Thompson Jr. and his wife Carol Lecky Thompson of Durham; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Benjamin P. Lacy of Durham. Mrs. Thompson was a past matron of Donie Rich Patton Chapter No. 212 Order of the Eastern Star. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John H. Giesler and the Rev. Jennifer C. Williams officiating. The organist will be Mrs. John W. Whitener. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be considered to Triangle Hospice, 1804 Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, Suite 112, Durham, NC 27707.

TROXLER
Mr. Charles Alexander Troxler, 92, of Heritage Woods died Monday morning, Nov. 27, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center after a short illness. He was born June 27, 1908, in Greensboro to Alexander Monroe Troxler and Ann Williams Troxler. He married Ethel Brandon of Winston-Salem in 1929. She preceded him in death in 1993. His parents; two sisters; a brother; and a grandson, Jeffery T. Clubb also preceded him in death. He had worked as a stereotyper in the pressroom of first the High Point Enterprise, then the Winston-Salem Journal and Sentinel before moving to New York, where he worked for the Herald-Tribune and The New York Times. Mr. Troxler was a member of Calvary Moravian Church and the Winston-Salem Odd Fellows Lodge, active in both as long as his health permitted. He is survived by his daughter, Shirley T. Clubb and her husband Charles V. Newman of Bermuda Run; a granddaughter, Robin C. Whitley and her husband David of Clemmons; a grandson, Charles Brian Clubb and his wife April of San Diego; two great-granddaughters, Brooke and Christy Whitley of Clemmons; and two sisters, Elizabeth Crawford of Kernersville and Frances Chenil of High Point. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Moravian Church by the Rev. Lane Sapp and the Rev. David Merritt. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Calvary Moravian Church, 600 Holly Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

WHITTEMORE
Stewart Hollis Whittemore, 38, of Winston-Salem died at his home Saturday, Nov. 25. Preliminary arrangements include a memorial service Dec. 9 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Lewisville-Clemmons Road, Lewisville. Time of service and additional details will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

ALEXANDER
STONY POINT -- Mr. James Atwell Alexander, 89, of 795 Elk Shoals Church Loop died Sunday morning, Nov. 26, 2000. He was a native of Alexander County and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Davidson College. He pursued studies at the Colorado School of Mines and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the field of geology. Following geological exploration work for Shell Oil Co. in Texas, Mr. Alexander returned to the family farm in 1940 where he raised beef cattle and poultry until his retirement in 1996. Mr. Alexander was known as an innovator in agricultural practices. He served on the North Carolina Board of Agriculture for 18 years. A leader in his community and state, in addition to his service on the board of agriculture, Mr. Alexander served as county commissioner for Alexander County, on the board of directors for the Alexander Community Hospital, was a charter member of the Taylorsville Lions Club, as director of Northwestern Bank and helped found the Northwest Development Association. He was a longtime member, Sunday school teacher and elder of Elk Shoals A.R.P. Church. He was married to Pauline Hill Alexander on Dec. 23, 1938. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Polly A. Van Hoy of Mocksville; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Andi) Palmer of Statesville, Brad Van Hoy and wife, Dawn, and Scott Van Hoy of Charlotte and Matthew Van Hoy of Mocksville; two sons-in-law, Henry P. Van Hoy of Mocksville and Thomas Palmer of Statesville; and two nieces, Miss Mary Jean Groce of Statesville and Miss Linda Gray Groce of Morganton. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Elk Shoals A.R.P. Church with Dr. Earl Linderman officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery, Statesville. Memorials may be made to Elk Shoals A.R.P. Church; Taylorsville Lions Club; Alexander Community Hospital; or to the ALS Association. Nicholson Funeral Home, Statesville, is serving the family of Mr. Alexander.

ASHLEY
YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Myrtle Viola Ashley, 86, formerly of East Bend died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2000, at the Brian Center in Winston-Salem. She was the daughter of the late Jacob H. and Kezie Chitty Charles. Mrs. Ashley was a member of Middle Cross Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as an inspector. She was married to the late Paul Ashley. Surviving are two daughters, Jean (Billy) Allen of Pinnacle and Alma (Bobby) Hendon of Liberty; three sons, Sanford (Alesha) Ashley of Pfafftown, William G. (Loretta) Vandiver Jr. of Surfside, S.C., and Harold L. (Lena J.) Vandiver of Winston-Salem; two stepdaughters, Brenda Harding and Jerry Wood; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a stepson; a sister; and two brothers. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000 at Reavis Funeral Home Yadkinville Chapel with the Rev. Tom Maxey officiating. Burial will follow in Longtown cemetery, Yadkinville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27 at the funeral home. A special thanks to Maggie Horton and the Brian Center for the love, support and care she re ceived.

BROWN
Great-Grandma Brown went to live with the angels Friday morning, Nov. 24, 2000. She graced this earth for 95 years. Lema Lillian Hensley Brown was born to Berta Lee Vest and Robert Lee Hensley Nov. 12, 1905, in Buena Vista, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Odell Brown, in 1968; her son, Raymond Odell Brown, in 1984; her grandson, Jerry Raymond Brown Sr., in 1988; and her daughter-in-law, Rachel Peddycord Brown, in 1999. She spent most of her life loving her family and friends. Earlier in her life, she worked in cotton mills in Virginia and North Carolina. She and her husband owned and operated Brown's Grocery in Kernersville for many years. Surviving are three great-grandchildren, Gerri Dee Crummett of Winston-Salem, Donna Kay Odrosky of Salisbury and Jerry Raymond Brown Jr. (Ray) of Winston-Salem and their loving and devoted mother, Deanna Glascoe Brown; three great-great-grandchildren, Hope and Jonathan Peddle and Sarah Odrosky; a brother, Wayne Hensley and his wife, a very special sister-in-law, Glenna Hensley, of Concord; and a sister, Irene Caldwell, of Conway. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at the funeral home with the Rev. Roy Ellis officiating. Interment will be at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. A special thank you to the Nursing Center at Oak Summit for their loving care and concern while Lema was with them. Also a special thanks to the nursing staff on the seventh floor at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for giving her such comforting care.

CAIN
Mrs. Flossie Sloan Cain, 94, of Brookridge Retirement Center in Winston-Salem, formerly of Raleigh, passed away Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Sept. 21, 1906, in Iredell County to the late Melville and Ida Guy Sloan. Mrs. Cain was a beloved mother and homemaker and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Guy C. Cain in April 1984 and a son, Guy Avonn Cain; she was the last of 16 brothers and sisters. Surviving are her four children, Max G. Cain of Titus, Ala., Sloan Cain of Ceres, Va., Tom Cain of Winston-Salem and Alice Quattrocchi of Prince Fredrick, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren. Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Flat Rock Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Cannon and the Rev. Dale Cain. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

COOK
Mr. C. Proctor Cook II, 51, of Winston-Salem died early Sunday morning, Nov. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Nov. 20, 1949, in Bourbon, Ky., to Norwood Thomas and Thelma Sharon Cook. Mr. Cook was a member of First Christian Church in Kernersville where he served as Minister of Pastoral Care and Evangelism. Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Patricia Reynolds Cook of the home; a son, Deric Cook of Dillard, Ga.; a brother, Emil Cook of Springfield, Ill.; and a sister, Louise Cook of Cynthiana, Ky. A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church by Senior Minister Pete Kunkle. Entombment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church, Piercing The Darkness Campaign, 1130 N. Main St., Kernersville, NC 27284.

CRABBE
TRAPHILL -- Mr. Robert Ray Crabbe, 73, of North Lomax Road passed away Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Crabbe was born Nov. 2, 1927, in Wilkes County to the late Gaither Blaine and Emma Blevins Crabbe. Mr. Crabbe was a retired dairy farmer and a member of Stony Ridge Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Zeno Crabbe and William Crabbe. Survivors include his wife, Betty Crabbe of the home; a foster daughter, Tammy (Eddie) Day of Elkin; a foster son, Tommy (Missy) Spicer of Traphill; two granddaughters, Jennifer Day of Elkin and Sarah Spicer of Traphill; three sisters, Bernice Combs and Kathleen Holt, both of Elkin and Bonnie Howard of Winston-Salem; three brothers, John Crabbe of Winston-Salem, Cecil Crabbe of Burlington and Kenneth Crabbe of North Wilkesboro; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Stony Ridge Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Lyons. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Stony Ridge Baptist Church.

DENNISON

Ralph Edward Dennison Sr., 75, of Winston-Salem has fought the good fight of faith and has laid hold on eternal life Nov. 24. He was born Aug. 10, 1924, in Bristol, W.Va., to the late Lloyd and Velma Dennison. Ralph attended Salem College (Salem, W.Va.) and NC State University. He retired from Wake Forest University with 25 years of service, as superintendent of buildings. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dee Dennison; a son, the Rev. Dr. Ralph "Denny" Dennison Jr. and wife, Sandy, of Lady Lakes, Fla.; two daughters, Diana Hawks of Winston-Salem and Jean Judd and husband, Gary, of Lewisville, Texas; grandchildren David and Jonathan Dennison of Florida, Jason Hawks of Winston-Salem and Nikki Collins and Justin Judd of Texas; a sister, Salina Cottrill and husband, Luke, of Salem, W.Va.; and nephew Billy Alderman of Salem. Ralph was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church, which was a great blessing to him. The family will receive friends at 2515 Lake Forest Drive, off Yadkinville Highway, from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000. A graveside service for close friends and family will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church cemetery, Vienna-Dozier Road. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Reynolda Presbyterian Church, Reynolda Road. Memorials may be made to Reynolda Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 2200 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

EDDLEMAN
EAST BEND -- Mrs. Beulah Southard Eddleman, 78, of Flint Hill Road departed this life Nov. 26, 2000, at Willowbrook Health Care. She was born May 9, 1922, in Yadkin County to Emory and Maggie Holcomb Southard. Mrs. Eddleman was retired from Carolina Lingerie Co. with 20 years of service and was a member of Gospel Way Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal Ance Eddleman; a son, James Neal Eddleman; and her parents. Surviving are her three children, Roy (Zelma) Eddleman of Yadkinville, Johnny (Peggy) Eddleman of East Bend and Ann (Harold) Myers of Clemmons; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dora Cheek of Welcome. Her funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. David Maynard and the Rev. Junior Royall. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in Forbush Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.

GRAY
HAMPTONVILLE -- Mr. Ralph "Dick" Gray, 68, of Old Highway 421 passed away Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born May 5, 1932, in Wilkes County to Cleve and Letha Hemric Gray. Mr. Gray was a retired farmer and a member of Dennyville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Lillie Myers Gray of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Jerry Cheek of Hamptonville; grandsons Shane (Renee) Cheek and Chris Cheek of Hamptonville; a sister, Lois Swaim of Hamptonville; and three brothers, the Rev. Kermit Gray of Mount Airy, Frank Gray of Hamptonville and Clyde Gray of Ronda. His funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Dennyville Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Lefler, the Rev. Kenneth Jordan, the Rev. Ronnie McMillan and Wayne Gray officiating. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Dennyville Baptist Church Building Fund, 2713 Old 60 Highway, Ronda, NC 28670. Gentry Family Funeral Service, Little Mountain Road, Jonesville is serving the family.

HAYES
Mrs. Josephine Angel Hayes, 84, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons. She was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Guilford County to the late John N. and Christine Angel. She had been a resident of Winston-Salem for most of her life, residing at 2164 School St. Preceding her in death were her husband, Edgar L. Hayes; a son, Roy C. Hayes; an infant son, David Clay Hayes; and a grandson, Mark Hayes. She is survived by two sons, Roger L. Hayes and wife, Polly, and Donald G. Hayes and wife, Geraldine, of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Sylvia Teague of Morehead City; a brother, John William Angel and wife, Marie, of Winston-Salem; and a daughter-in-law, Dottie Hayes of Clemmons. Additionally she is survived by 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church and for the past several years was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Services for Mrs. Hayes will be 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel in Winston-Salem by Dr. Gary Chapman of Calvary Baptist Church and the Rev. Wallace Elliot, retired minister of Christ Moravian Church. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park on University Parkway in Rural Hall. Mrs. Hayes will lie in state from 2 to 3 p.m. the day of the service at which time the family will receive friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church of the donor's choice.
