JOHNSON
Mrs. Isabell Sink Johnson, 90, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. She was born June 10, 1910, to Jesse Gideon and Sallie Wood Sink in Davidson County. Mrs. Johnson graduated from Appalachian Teachers College and taught briefly in the Davidson County school system. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.J. Johnson Sr. Surviving are a daughter, Selvey J. Boyer; a son and daughter-in-law, Alvin J. Johnson Jr. and wife Pat; a granddaughter, Julie Leigh Johnson, all of Winston-Salem; sisters Mrs. Rachel Perrell of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Ida Byerly, Mrs. Beulah Hill and Miss Doris Sink; a brother, Roy Sink, all of Winston-Salem; and numerous nephews and nieces. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed gardening and working in her flowers. One of her greatest joys was providing flowers for various church functions. A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Tom Bagnal. Burial will follow in the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3627 Konnoak Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

MCKINNEY
KING -- Mr. Walter Robert McKinney, 90, of 509 W. Dalton Road passed away Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. McKinney was born in Stokes County July 20, 1910, to Walter Quincy and Rosella Tucker McKinney. He was a retired farmer and deputy sheriff and a member of Stoney Ridge Baptist Church. He is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Earlis McKinney Beasley, Mary Fay McKinney Collins and Annie Kate McKinney Douglas and husband, Ray, all of King; four sons and daughters-in-law, Walter Rayford McKinney and wife, Shirley, of King, James Ledford McKinney and wife, Betty, of Tobaccoville and Rupert Franklin McKinney and Thomas Carlton McKinney and wife, Janet, all of King; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Otis McKinney of Lindale, Ga. Mr. McKinney was preceded in death by his wife, Susie Nunn McKinney and a son, William Robert "Bill" McKinney. Funeral services for Mr. McKinney will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at Stoney Ridge Baptist Church by the Rev. Mike Sands, the Rev. Yates Wilkinson and Brother Don Collins. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home. The McKinney family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

SHORE
RURAL HALL -- Mrs. Myrtle Campbell Merritt-Shore, 67, of 8360 Jefferson Church Road died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a period of declining health. Mrs. Shore was born in Germanton Nov. 10, 1933, the daughter of the late Willie Lee and Rosa Miller Campbell. She was a faithful member of Jefferson Church of Christ in Rural Hall. She owned and operated Myrtle's Beauty Shop for more than 35 years. She was an accomplished cook and had received numerous awards for baking. Surviving are her husband, Richard G. Shore of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and David Saunders of Rural Hall and Debbie and Larry Shelton of King; a son and daughter-in-law, Garry and Bek Merritt of King; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Paula Anne, Joshua, Palmer, Jordan, Thomas, Christen, Jessica and Hannah; three sisters, Elizabeth Abernethy of Mocksville, Willie Kate Lawson of Germanton and Violet Stevens of Winston-Salem; a brother, Clarence Campbell of Walnut Cove; and two special nephews, Keith Merritt and Dean Merritt. Mrs. Shore was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph L. Merritt; her twin sister, Mabel Merritt; and a grandson, Justin Merritt. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at Jefferson Church of Christ by Jerry Simpkins, Steve Cook, Darrell Portwood and Glenn Van Meter, ministers. Mrs. Shore will be taken to the church at 4 p.m. Monday where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Memorials should be directed to Jefferson Church of Christ Sanctuary Fund, 8200 Jefferson Church Road, Rural Hall, NC 27045. Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall is assisting the Shore family with arrangements and services.

SMITH
Mr. Paul Vincent Smith, 86, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 22, 1914, in Buffalo, N.Y., to George and Margaret Powers Smith. He was retired from AT&T and was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, where he served as an usher. He is survived by his wife, Veronica Devio Smith of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Kathleen) Ordon; a son, Cameron Smith; five grandchildren, Vincent Smith, Kim Marie Capozzolo, Kevin Smith, Lisa Hemstreet and Heather Herring; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Joan Martin. A funeral Mass will be said 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Leo's Catholic Church by the Rev. Cecil Tise. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Children's Home, 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or to a charity of the donor's choice. SPRINKLE
YADKINVILLE -- Mr. James Lloyd Sprinkle, 80, of 4416 Carrie Ave. passed away Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Britthaven of Forsyth in Winston-Salem. He was born June 30, 1920, in Forsyth County to the late Seabern Sprinkle Sr. and Mattie Lawrence Sprinkle. Mr. Sprinkle was retired from Thomasville Furniture Co. and was a veteran of World War II serving the military police of the U.S. Army. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Earmie Lee Smith Sprinkle; a son, James Sprinkle Jr.; a sister, Mary Sprinkle Lyons; a granddaughter, Beverly Sprinkle; and a brother, Bill Sprinkle. Surviving are a son, Harry Sprinkle of Port Orchard, Wash.; his stepmother, Margaret R. Sprinkle of the home; two half sisters, Shirley Sprinkle Prince of Marion, S.C., and Diane Sechrist of Winston-Salem; a brother, Seabern B. Sprinkle Jr. of Old Town; a half brother, Harold Sprinkle of Pockton; and three grandchildren, Joseph, Debra and Mike Sprinkle. Mr. Sprinkle will be cremated and no services will be held. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the family.

SWICEGOOD
LEXINGTON -- Mr. H. Mock Swicegood, 79, of Brookstone Retirement Center, formerly of Iroquois Trail, died Sunday morning at Brookstone after three years of declining health and being seriously ill for one day. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at Forest Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Tommy Robertson. Mr. Swicegood was born in Davidson County March 3, 1921, to Henry Ray Swicegood and Effie Walser Swicegood. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, was a member of V.F.W. Post 3074, American Legion Post 8 and Amvets Post 13. He helped organize and was a charter member of Wesley Heights United Methodist Church. While his health allowed, he was active in the church, having served as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, trustee and in other positions in the church and was recently honored for his service to his church. He helped with the Meals on Wheels program and was a retired pipefitter and member of Local Union 421. He was a Mason and member of Lexington Masonic Lodge 473 AFAM, Scotish Rite Valley of Charlotte and the Oasis Shrine Temple AAONMS of Charlotte. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Aileen Myers Swicegood, who died July 21, 1992 and a sister, Mrs. Roy (McIrose) Forrest. Surviving are a son, Randy Swicegood and wife, Amy, of Lexington; daughter Linda Strickland and husband, Tom, of Swansboro; four grandchildren, Chad and Casey Swicegood of Lexington, Tommy Strickland of Morehead City and Stephanie Strickland of Emerald Isle; a brother, Verne Swicegood of Lexington; and sisters Mrs. Jack (Dot) Mize, Mrs. Joe (Virginia) Reich and Mrs. Troy (Maxine) Callahan of Lexington and Mrs. Graham (Betty) Sowers of Stuart, Va. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington. WILSON
Mr. Ralph E. "Ted" Wilson of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Wilson was born May 21, 1927, in Cherokee County to the late Henry C. and Carrie Whitaker Wilson. He was a member of Waughtown Baptist Church and retired from Roadway Express after 27 years of service. Mr. Wilson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lee Wilson. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Fern McConnell Wilson; a brother-in-law, Ralph McConnell and wife, Barbara, of Murphy; a nephew, Christopher McConnell and wife, Kim, of Greenville, S.C.; and a niece, Tanya Sherrill and husband, Mike, of Boone. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Joe McWethey and the Rev. Billy Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and requests that memorials be made to Waughtown Baptist Church Building Fund.

BROWN
WALNUT COVE -- Mrs. Nellie Fulp Brown, 73, of Hairston St. died Nov. 23, 2000, at Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Danbury. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Pine Hall Baptist Church in Pine Hall. Burial will be in Dry Hollow Primitive Baptist Church in Walnut Cove. She was a native of West Virginia, a member of Pine Hall Baptist Church and a retired dietitian. She is survived by three sons, Tony Brown (Sudie), John Wayne Brown and Isaiah Brown Jr. (Rosetta) all of Walnut Cove; four daughters, Nellie R. Brown and Geraldine Mitchell (Charles) of Walnut Cove, Rosie Siddle (Kenneth) of Summerfield and Cynthia Bennett (Jesse) of Kernersville; four brothers, Napoleon Fulp and Leon Fulp of Winston-Salem and Richard Fulp and Eugene Fulp of New York; sisters Susie Jefferson of Walnut Cove, Evangelist Letha Jefferson of New York and Virginia Lash of Bethania; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home in Madison.

DISHER
Mrs. Eva Beatrice Wade Disher, 75, of 370 S. Westview Drive died Wednesday, Nov. 22 at her home. She was born Jan. 1, 1925, the third of six children born to Malcolm B. and Lula Morrison Wade at home in Lillington. She graduated from Lillington High School and went to Sanford Business School. After she finished business school, she went to work in Washington, D.C. at the Pentagon during World War II. Bea left Washington and went to Fort Bragg in the secretarial pool at the Veterans Administration. Bea was asked to move with the Fort Bragg Medical VA to Winston-Salem, as the head of the secretarial pool there. Bea met Anthony H. "Mike" Disher in Winston-Salem. He was a hard-working young man who flew a small plane wherever he wanted to go. On the first visit to meet Bea's parents, he flew into Lillington to pick her up on Sunday afternoon. Bea and Mike were married on June 24, 1950, in Winston-Salem and had three children. They were happily married for 47 years until Mike's death in 1998. After raising her children, she went back to work for Family Services Inc. as a special education teacher for 22 years. She was a longtime member of Home Moravian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women's Fellowship. Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Prendergast and husband Rick of Winston-Salem; two sons, Anthony H. Disher Jr. and wife Charlotte and William W. Disher and wife Cathy of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Hamilton Disher, Harrison Disher, Madison Disher and Carleigh Disher all of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jack Wade of Lillington; and two sisters, Doris Stewart and husband Damon of Holly Hill, S.C. and Gladys Henderson and husband James of Oxford. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Home Moravian Church by the Rev. C. Scott Venable III and the Rev. Stuart N. Zimmerman. Burial will follow in God's Acre. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. FREEMAN
Mr. Everett Flay Freeman III, 59, of Winston-Salem died Friday evening, Nov. 24, 2000, at his home. He was born Dec. 27, 1940, in Forsyth County to Everett Flay Freeman Jr. and Helen Grubbs Freeman. Mr. Freeman had been employed with Stroh Brewery. Surviving are his former wife and mother of his children, Martha Jane Sullivan of Greensboro; a son, Bryan Freeman of Greensboro; three daughters and their husbands, Mary and Scott Gilbert of Atlanta, Lori and Charlie Flanigan of West Virginia and Ellen and Phil Knight of Winston-Salem; and 10 grandchildren, Sarah, Ben, Courtney, Max, Aren, Rachel, Katie, Hannah, Amy and David. A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Forsyth Memorial Park by Father Joseph Madden. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Children's Home, 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

GRAY
HAMPTONVILLE -- Mr. Ralph "Dick" Gray, 68, of Old Highway 421 passed away Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born May 5, 1932, in Wilkes County to Cleve and Letha Hemric Gray. Mr. Gray was a retired farmer and a member of Dennyville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Lillie Myers Gray of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Jerry Cheek of Hamptonville; grandsons Shane (Renee) Cheek and Chris Cheek of Hamptonville; a sister, Lois Swaim of Hamptonville; and three brothers, the Rev. Kermit Gray of Mount Airy, Frank Gray of Hamptonville and Clyde Gray of Ronda. His funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Dennyville Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Lefler, the Rev. Kenneth Jordan, the Rev. Ronnie McMillan and Wayne Gray officiating. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville. HARTLEY
Mr. Millard Crim Hartley, 85, of 2629 Forest Drive died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Hartley was born May 5, 1915, in Winston-Salem to Noah Eugene and Ethel Binkly Hartley. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and a veteran of World War II, serving in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Fairview Moravian Church where he served on the board of elders, was the past president of the Weber Memorial Class and a member of the choir. Mr. Hartley was with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 40 years retiring as foreman at 92-Blending. He was an officer and member of United Commercial Travelers, a member and past chancellor commander of the Knights of Pythias and a past member of the Auxiliary Policeman's Association. Mr. Hartley was a devoted husband and beloved father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Belle Reid Hartley, and a brother, Harold Eugene Hartley. Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Susan Boyer and husband Warren of Winston-Salem and a grandson, David Warren Boyer of Washington, D.C. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Fairview Moravian Church with the Rev. Neil Routh and the Rev. Norwood Green officiating. Burial will follow in God's Acre. HAYES
Mrs. Josephine Angel Hayes, 84, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons. She was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Guilford County to the late John N. and Christine Angel. She had been a resident of Winston-Salem for most of her life, residing at 2164 School St. Preceding her in death were her husband, Edgar L. Hayes; a son, Roy C. Hayes; an infant son, David Clay Hayes; and a grandson, Mark Hayes. She is survived by two sons, Roger L. Hayes and wife, Polly, and Donald G. Hayes and wife, Geraldine, of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Sylvia Teague of Morehead City; a brother, John William Angel and wife, Marie, of Winston-Salem; and a daughter-in-law, Dottie Hayes of Clemmons. Additionally she is survived by 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church and for the past several years was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Services for Mrs. Hayes will be 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel in Winston-Salem by Dr. Gary Chapman of Calvary Baptist Church and the Rev. Wallace Elliot, retired minister of Christ Moravian Church. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park on University Parkway in Rural Hall. Mrs. Hayes will lie in state from 2 to 3 p.m. the day of the service at which time the family will receive friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church of the donor's choice.

HELSABECK
RURAL HALL -- Mr. John Henry Helsabeck, 82, of 8850 Chipboard Road died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at his home after a period of declining health. Mr. Helsabeck was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Margie Newsome Helsabeck on March 31, 1999. He was born in Forsyth County July 15, 1918, the son of the late Henry Oscar and Minnie Cook Helsabeck. Mr. Helsabeck was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church in Rural Hall. He was a 1937 graduate of Rural Hall High School, was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 23 years of service and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Surviving are a daughter, Jennifer Tuttle and husband Buck of King; a son, William Helsabeck and wife Carol of Rural Hall; four grandchildren, Alex (Sandy) Helsabeck and Jason (April) Helsabeck of Rural Hall and Allen (Claudia) Tuttle and Melissa Tuttle of King; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Annie Kapp of Rural Hall and Blanch Bowen and Helen Shore, both of Tobaccoville; two brothers, Oscar Helsabeck and Frank Helsabeck, both of Rural Hall; and two special friends, Margie Hooker and Karen Bolen. Mr. Helsabeck was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Alderman and Ruby Edwards, and a brother, Fred Helsabeck. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000 at Antioch United Methodist Church by the Rev. Harry Sammons and Mr. Edward Shore. Burial with military honors by King American Legion Post 290 will follow in the church cemetery. The Helsabeck family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall. KETCHIE
Mr. Ronald Eugene Ketchie Sr., loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, of 1900 Ardmore Road died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at his home. He had a heart of gold, a special smile and a twinkle in his eye. He was born Aug. 19, 1930, in Forsyth County to Boyce Edward and Ruth Stanley Ketchie. He was a member of Giffith Baptist Church. Mr. Ketchie was an avid fan of his grandchildren's activities and sports. He was in the furniture industry for 50 years working with B.F. Huntley Furniture Co. and Almay Desk Manufacturing before retiring. Survivors include his wife, Betty Eddinger Ketchie of the home; three sons, Ronnie E. Ketchie and wife Luann of Winston-Salem, Sterling E. Ketchie and wife Barbara of East Bend and Randy B. Ketchie and wife Amy of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Pamela K. Frye and husband Walter of Pilot Mountain and Marsha K. Gudger and husband Mike of Winston-Salem; 12 grandchildren, Amy, Nick and Kelly Frye, Jason and Eric Ketchie, Kyle and Paige Ketchie, Steven, Haley, Laken and Ally Gudger and Katelyn Ketchie; a sister, Lynda K. Buchanan of Winston-Salem; two nephews, Robert Buchanan and wife Dana and Chris Buchanan and wife Terri; a great-niece, Taylor; and a host of loving family and friends. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Tony Brown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Griffith Baptist Church, 1987 Old Salisbury Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

SENDA
MOCKSVILLE -- Mrs. Herma M. Senda, 74, died Nov. 24, 2000. Born of German parents in Czechoslovakia, she relocated to the U.S. in 1952. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; and her husband, Edward J. Senda. Survivors include a daughter, Roxanna D. Goughnour and husband Robert A. Goughnour Jr. of Mocksville and two grandchildren, Nicholas and Brian Goughnour of Mocksville. A memorial Mass will be held 1 p.m. Monday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Mocksville. Interment will be in Pennsylvania.

Sprinkle of the home; two half sisters, Shirley Sprinkle Prince of Marion, S.C., and Diane Sechrist of Winston-Salem; a brother, Seabern B. Sprinkle Jr. of Old Town; a half brother, Harold Sprinkle of Pockton; and three grandchildren, Joseph, Debra and Mike Sprinkle. Mr. Sprinkle will be cremated and no services will be held. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the family.

TAYLOR
DANBURY -- Mrs. Louise Tilley Taylor, 74, of Jewel Road died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Stokes County on Oct. 30, 1926, to the late J. Hassell and Agnes Robertson Tilley, was retired from R.J. Reynolds Brook Cove Plant and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Harry Taylor of the home; a daughter, Margaret Taylor Cass of Danbury; a grandson and wife, Jamie and Tracey Faires Cass of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter and husband, Jennifer and Rickey Hamlin of Elkin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rufus "Paul" and Mary Tilley of Danbury and Hassell "Joe" and Judy Tilley of Lawsonville; sisters-in-law Margaret Reid Tilley of Lawsonville, Lillie Ashby Taylor of Danbury and Mozelle Rogers Taylor of Stuart, Va.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Mozelle Taylor Campbell of High Point, Jimmy and Mildred Mabe Taylor of Advance and Ralph and Margie Bennett Bullins of Danbury; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Tim Campbell. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at North View Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday night after the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. A special thanks to the many people who prayed for mother while she was sick.
