GIBSON
Mrs. Ada Smith Gibson, 88, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons. Mrs. Gibson was born June 16, 1912, in Lowell to Lola Ward Smith and Arch A. Smith. She was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. Mrs. Gibson was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Robert Lee Gibson, in 1972. Surviving are a daughter, Kathleen M. Gibson of Winston-Salem; two sons, Calvin L. Berrier of Chattanooga, Tenn. and Stephen L. Gibson of Rocky Mount; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Catherine Duffy. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Riley Puckett officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. GOLDEN
STATE ROAD -- Mr. Carl Garvey Golden, 81, passed away Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Mr. Golden was born in Surry County Oct. 7, 1919, to Emitt and Lula Golden. Mr. Golden was a World War II veteran and retired from the state after 35 years of service. He was a member of Rocky Ford Baptist Church in State Road. Surviving are his wife, Mary Hayes Golden of the home; a brother, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Golden of State Road; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Preston of Elizabethton, Tenn. and Mrs. Nancy Nixon of Thurmond; and a host of loving friends, nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Jack Simpson, Robert Caudill and Johnny Absher. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jimmy Tucker. Burial will follow in Crestwood Memorial Gardens in State Road. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the funeral home.

HEDGECOCK
HIGH POINT -- Mrs. Lillian "Maw" Brooks Hedgecock, 87, of 224 Barney Road died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Lillian was born in Surry County on Oct. 1, 1913, the daughter of Arthur and Flossie Nunn Brooks. She was formerly employed with Anvil Brand and retired from Archdale Manufacturing. She was a lifelong member of Bunker Hill United Methodist Church and a charter member of its women's society and the adult Sunday-school class. On Dec. 23, 1929, she married Ivey Franklin (Nick) Hedgecock, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Edgar, Weymouth and Douglas Brooks, and a son-in-law, Jimmy Norman. Surviving are two daughters, Wilma Norman of High Point and Nancy Jane Russell and her husband Marty of High Point; four grandchildren, Frankie McNally and her husband, John of High Point, Ivey Jane Kiestler and her husband, Terry of Winston-Salem, Kimberly Hobson and her husband, Barry of High Point and Franklin Howard Russell of High Point; three great-grandchildren, Amanda Brown and her husband, Doug of Thomasville and Christopher and Brittany Kiestler of Winston-Salem; a great-great-grandchild, Nicholas Brown of Thomasville; a sister, Elizabeth Brooks Boggs of High Point; and several special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bunker Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dana McKim. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church and all other times at the home of Nancy and Marty Russell, 224 Barney Road, or Wilma Norman, 214 Barney Road. The family requests memorials be made to Bunker Hill United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1510 Bunker Hill-Sandy Ridge Road, Kernersville, NC 27284. OGBURN
Mr. H. Kapp Ogburn Jr., 72, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Jan. 6, 1928, in Winston-Salem, the son of Mary Jenkins Miller and H. Kapp Ogburn Sr. Mr. Ogburn was educated in the city schools, graduating from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1945. He graduated from N.C. State University in 1949. He was one of two members of the first graduating class of the Realtors Institute at Chapel Hill. He joined his family's firm, Home Real Estate Loan and Insurance Co., in 1949 and later was president of Kapp Ogburn and Sons Realty Co. Mr. Ogburn was active in the Winston-Salem Board of Realtors for 50 years, serving as president in 1956. He was instrumental in establishing the Multiple Listing Service in Winston-Salem, serving as its president in 1954. He was inducted into the Thomas W. Lambe Jr. Hall of Fame in 1999. He was a member of Forsyth Country Club. He was a lifelong member of Augsburg Lutheran Church, serving as secretary/treasurer, vice president and president of the church council. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret "Boots" Jones; two children, Mary Margaret "Mo" Ogburn of Winston-Salem and H. Kapp Ogburn III and wife, Lynne, of Chapel Hill; and a brother, Sam C. Ogburn Sr. and wife, Mary Ceile, of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Augsburg Lutheran Church with Dr. Ronald A. Rinn and the Rev. Ed Troutman officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service. ORR
Eloise Bassett Orr, 80, who lived at Heritage Woods, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000. Mrs. Orr was born July 3, 1920, in Atlanta to the late Lyman Earle Bassett and Almira Berry Parker of Cedartown, Ga. She was a graduate of Cedartown High School, a teacher in Acworth and Marietta, Ga., a member of the Women's Club, an active member at St. Paul's and St. James Episcopal churches and a homemaker. She is survived in her immediate family by a son, Dr. Lynn H. Orr Jr., and wife, Becki, of Greenville and their two children, Alex and Ashley; her daughter, Mrs. Eloise O. Bourgeois, and husband, Wayne, of Metairie, La., and their children, Barbara, Ridge and Catherine; her son, Mr. William L. Orr, and wife, Martha, of Winston-Salem and their three sons, Michael, David and John; her son, Mr. Wayne K. Orr, and wife, Martha, of Kenner, La.; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family will receive friends at the home of Bill and Martha Orr in Winston-Salem from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000. There will be a graveside memorial service at the Marietta National cemetery in Marietta, Ga., at 2 p.m. Monday. REID
Mrs. Delores Matthews Reid, 50, of 3940 Shamel St., Winston-Salem was born July 7, 1950, in New Orleans to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Matthews. She resided in Winston-Salem for 40 years. In the community, she served as president of the North Hills Neighbor Association for three years. She was a former employee of Triad Methodist Home. She departed this life Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Her memory will be cherished by all that knew her. She is survived by her husband, Richard Reid; four loving children, Anderson Hicks III (Valerie), Carlos Hicks (Bertha), Martha "Pumpkin" Reid and Rico Alexander Reid; a deceased son, Clarence Joseph Matthews; devoted friends, Mary Samuels, Mary Gilmore and Anna Reid; nine grandchildren; and a host of close relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Reid will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the Frances S. & Jerry C. Gilmore Jr. Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. in the chapel. The Rev. Michael Samuels of New Trinity Baptist Church will be officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Letha Jones Rodgers, 80, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at the Meadowbrook Terrace of Clemmons. She was born Aug. 9, 1920, in Saluda, S.C. to Luke and Willar Edwards Jones. SEARCY
Mrs. Louise Tate Searcy, 79, of 844 Goldfloss St. passed away Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center after a period of illness. She was a native of Lancaster, S.C. She was born March 22, 1921, the daughter of the late Bessie McDowell and Andrew Lee Tate. She is survived by a daughter, Alma S. Bush of the home; two sons, Harvey L. Searcy (Margaret) of Burlington, and Thomas L. Searcy (Audrey) of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren, Cetaro Searcy, Brittney Rutherford, Brandy Daye, Margo Daye, Yakhia Hill, Ayanna Hill, Jasmine Lamkin and Cory McDougal; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with the Larry Smith officiating. Interment will be in the family plot of Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday at the funeral home. SHORE
LEWISVILLE -- Mr. Jerry Wayne Shore, 57, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born June 28, 1943, in Forsyth County to William Nathan and Pearl Sink Shore. Mr. Shore was a lifelong member of Friedberg Moravian Church. He worked with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 10 years and then the Lorillard Co. in Greensboro as an analytical flavor chemist for 10 years. He was past president of Alleghany Christmas Tree Association and a member of the Frasier Fir N.C. Tree Association Committee. Surviving are his wife, Loretta Sides Shore, of the home; a daughter, Katherine Leigh Shore, of the home; a son, Michael Wayne Shore, of Virginia; his father, William "Bill" Shore, of Winston-Salem; a sister, Martha S. Thomas, and husband, Adrian, of Winston-Salem; and his mother and father-in-law, Homer and Bonnie Sides of Sparta. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Friedberg Moravian Church with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton, Dr. Michael Haynes and the Rev. Norwood Green officiating. Mr. Shore will lie in state at the church from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. SMITH L
EXINGTON -- William Colen Smith, 76, of Bowers Road died Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 11:42 p.m. at Lexington Health Care after 11 months of declining health with cancer and five weeks critical illness. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Mount Tabor United Church of Christ where he was a lifelong member. The Rev. Lloyd Spencer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites with V.F.W. Post 3074. Mr. Smith was born in Davidson County Nov. 27, 1924, to William Carl Smith and Hattie Crotts Smith. He was a graduate of Davie-Townsend High School and Ashmore Business College and retired as postmaster from the U.S. Postal Service after 35 years of service. He was a charter member of Central Carolina Civitans, serving as past president, past lieutenant governor and was an Honor Key Recipient. He was a member of the state and local Beekeepers Association and was a volunteer for Special Olympics and Meals on Wheels. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 3074 and American Legion Post 8. At Mount Tabor United Church of Christ he was a member of the adult Sunday school class, the Men's Brotherhood and the choir. He was preceded in death by his infant son, William Colen Smith Jr. and a brother, Artis Smith. Surviving are his wife, Lucille Hanes Smith of the home; daughters Stephanie Allred and husband Rick of Lexington and Valerie Osborne and husband Clint of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Logan Allred and Kendal Allred of Lexington and Keaton Osborne of Winston-Salem; brothers Baxter Smith, Edmund Smith and Boyd Smith, all of Lexington; sisters Virgie Smith, Arlene Smith and Mildred Beck, all of Lexington. WOOSLEY
Mrs. Ola Kennedy Woosley, 82, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000. She was born to the late John and Maude Kennedy March 20, 1918, in Wilkes County. She married Ralph Woosley on Dec. 21, 1940. She was retired from Duplan Corp. with over 20 years of service. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening with all types of flowers. Her parents; her second mother, Eudemma McGrady; two sisters, Ruby Lemons and Fay Rhodes; and a brother, Earl Kennedy, preceded her in death. Her husband, Ralph Woosley of the home; a son, Beverly Dale Woosley of Winston-Salem; a brother, Fred Kennedy of Hays; and her best friend, Geneva Mosteller of Winston-Salem survive her. Also surviving her are numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at the Friedland Moravian Church with the Rev. Steve Craver officiating. Interment will follow in the church graveyard. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 Saturday evening at Vogler & Son's Main Street Funeral Home. Please make memorials to the Kate B. BAILEY
Mr. Dallas Edison Bailey, 75, a resident of 121 Merrydale Court, King, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was a resident of Village Care in King for a short period of time. He was born Oct. 21, 1925, in Forsyth County. His father, William Edison Bailey, and a brother, Lamar Bailey, preceded him in death. Survivors included his wife, Virginia Harvey Bailey; a daughter, Kay Robertson and husband, Scott, of Olatha, Kan.; a son, Keith Bailey of King; his mother, Pansy Moser Bailey of Arbor Acres, Triad United Methodist Home; a grandson, Kevin Robertson; a brother, Kenneth Bailey and his wife, Joan, of Keatchie, Los Angeles; a sister-in-law, Helen Bailey of Arlington, Texas; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Mr. Bailey was employed by Sealtest Dairy for many years. He later joined Beatrice Foods as CEO, and continued there until his retirement. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in King where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18. Pastor Mark Mashburn will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Crestview Memorial Park, Rural Hall. Arrangements are by Memorial Funeral Chapel. BURRIS
CHARLOTTE -- Mr. Daniel M. Burris Jr., 76, of Charlotte died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at his home. A native of Pulaski, Va. Mr. Burris was born Dec. 7, 1924, the son of the late Daniel M. Burris Sr. and Bertha Parker Burris. Reared in Spartanburg, S.C. Mr. Burris served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radarman in the South Pacific. In 1953, he earned his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration form the University of Georgia, Atlanta Division. In 1983 he retired from Western Electric, now Lucent Technologies. He was a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association and the Pioneers of America. He was also a member of the Methodist faith and at one time was very active in the church. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Bates Burris; a son, Daniel Monroe Burris III of Blowing Rock, N.C.; two sisters, Exia Boliek of Conover, N.C. and Alma White of Chapin, S.C., and two brothers, R.L. Burris of Chapin, S.C., and Lane C. Burris of Spartanburg, S.C. The family will receive friends Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, Dilworth Chapel from 3:30 to 5 p.m. A naval memorial service will be held on the USS Yorktown after the first of the year. CALDWELL
Mrs. Dorothy Byars Caldwell, "Mama Dot," 78, of Charlotte passed away Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at her residence. She was born on Sept. 22, 1922, in Chester, S.C., daughter of the late Clarence Edward Byars and Sarah Annice Byars. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Back Creek A.R.P. Church, officiated by the Rev. Wayne Frazier. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at McEwen Derita Chapel from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Survivors include four children, Robert Caldwell Jr. and his wife Beverly of Charlotte; Judy Mills and her husband Roy of Albemarle, N.C.; Jim Caldwell and his wife Janice of Lexington, N.C.; and Terry Kreider and her husband Russ of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Tracey Williams, James Caldwell, Jerry Caldwell, Robin Priles, Heather Kreider and Joshua Kreider. DAVIS
Mr. Harrison Watts Davis, 91, formerly of Charleston, S.C., died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was born Feb. 6, 1909, in Clinton, S.C., to Washington Watts Davis and Nancy Laurens Glenn Davis. He graduated from Presbyterian College in 1931 and was a member of the 1930 South Carolina Civilian Rifle Team at the national Rifle Championships in Camp Perry, Ohio. He retired from the Survey Department of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Charleston after 32 years of service. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 and retired from the Army Reserve as a major in 1969. Surviving are his wife, Anne Clark Davis of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Elizabeth Redding of Clemmons, N.C., and a sister, Mrs. Martha Abernethy of Birmingham, Ala. Funeral services will be held at the Gray Funeral Home Chapel in Clinton, S.C., Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m. with Dr. Dennis Tedder officiating. Burial will follow in the First Presbyterian Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home before the service. NOGALES, Ariz. -- Mr. Bill G. Faircloth, 67, of Nogales, Ariz. formerly of Winston-Salem, N.C. died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at his home. He was born Oct. 2, 1933, in Forsyth County to Thomas Frank and Stella Williams Faircloth. Mr. Faircloth was owner of Westex Cor. in Nogales. While a resident in Winston-Salem he was member of Bethesda Moravian Church. He is survived by his wife, Erika Feinauer of the home; two daughters, Bridgett Smith (David) of Atlanta, Ga., and Anne Marie Conner (Philip) of Las Vegas, Nev.; a son, Brandon G. (Engracias) of Nogales; four grandchildren, Sean and Ryan Conner, Michael and Stephanie Faircloth; a brother, T. Frank Faircloth (Jean); two sisters, Helen F. Long and Joan F. Cockerham (Jack), all of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held in Tucson, Ariz. on Sunday, Dec. 17th.

HALL
Mrs. Emma Jane Linville Hall, 78, of 5400 Davis Road died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Hall was born Oct. 21, 1922, to Albert McGuire and Stella Butner Linville. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County and was a member of Burkhead United Methodist Church. She graduated from Mt. Park High School in Mt. Park, N.C. For many years she was employed by Dr. Mary Griffith. Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Lee Hall; a brother, Robert Linville; and a sister, Betty Mackie. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, John T. Hall Jr., of the home; two daughters, Sandra H. Mayberry and husband Ronnie of Winston-Salem and Christy H. Oakley and husband Allen of Walkertown; two granddaughters, Kim K. Wood and husband John, Jaime K. Wright and husband Scott; two brothers, James Linville and William Linville; a number of nieces and nephews and her special dog, "Lucky." The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Burkhead United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Smith officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park.
