HIGHFILL
Mrs. Claudia Barnes Highfill, 106, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at her home, 221 Petree Road. One of ten children, she was born June 3, 1894, to the late John and Susan Barnes of Stoneville. On Jan. 28, 1920, she married H.T. Highfill, a longtime contractor and State Farm Insurance Agent who died in 1972. Claudia was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by a son, W. Lawrence Highfill, and wife, Hilda, of Raleigh and two daughters, Virginia, of the home, and Lena Thomas and husband, Alvin, of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Nancy Hendershot and husband, Gene, of Aurora, Mary Musser and husband, Gary, of Raleigh, David Highfill of New York, Oliva Isentol and husband, Bill, of Columbia, S.C., Tony Thomas and wife, Susie, of Hartsville, S.C., and Tina Byerly of Winston-Salem. Eight great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Claudia was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and a loving, caring neighbor and friend. She was a devout Christian and a longtime member of Northwest Baptist Church, where she taught a Sunday school class of 9-year-old girls and led a Girls' Auxiliary. She was also active in the Woman's Missionary Union as long as her health permitted. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Vogler's Funeral Home on Reynolda Road. The funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Northwest Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 407 Petree Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; Hospice of Winston-Salem, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or the charity of the donor's choice.

HOLLAND
Mrs. Lucy Watkins Holland, 76, of Winston-Salem died Dec. 18, 2000, at her home. She was born in Forsyth County Feb. 27, 1924, to Milard O. and Effie Yokely Watkins. She was of the Baptist faith. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Lucy was preceded in death by her daughter, Sherrie Holland Long. She is survived by her husband, W.E. "Ernie" Holland Jr. of the home; a daughter, Takeeta H. Gordon, and husband Merrill of Winston-Salem; four granddaughters, Leslie L. Spampinto and Kimberly L. Hellner both of Raleigh and Amber Gordon and Meredith Gordon both of Winston-Salem; two great-granddaughters, Madison and Lauren Hellner; three sisters, Betty Thrift of Winston-Salem, Idema Johnson of Clemmons and Mary Lou Landingham of South Carolina; two brothers, Joe and Harry Watkins both of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Dr. Bobby Roberson and the Rev. Bill Chatman officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

HOLT
PINNACLE -- Mr. Clarence Richard Holt, 64, of 504 Pinnacle Hotel Road passed away Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Mr. Holt was born Nov. 14, 1936, in Patrick County, Va., to Joe and Polly Willard Holt. He was a retired carpenter. He is survived by his girlfriend and companion of 26 years, Hazel McMillian of Pinnacle; two sisters, Audrey Bowman and Louise Holt of Pinnacle; five brothers, Paul Holt of Mount Airy, Joe Holt of Pilot Mountain, Henry Holt of Mount Airy, Bobby Holt of Pinnacle and William Holt of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Holt was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Dewey and Randolph Holt. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home by the Rev. William Holt. Interment will be at the Brims Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the funeral home. The Holt family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

LAIL
Mr. Aaron Van Lail Sr. died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000. He was born Sept. 12, 1957, in Forsyth County to Donald and Lucy Honaker Lail. Survivors are his wife, Donna G. Lail of Winston-Salem; two sons, Aaron V. Lail Jr. and Gary Lail of Winston-Salem; two stepdaughters, Kari Colter and Ashley Benson of Kernersville; a daughter, Misty Lail of Clemmons; his mother, Lucy H. Jeffries and husband Kenneth of West Virginia; two brothers; and four sisters. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel in Walkertown with Dr. Bobby Roberson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the cemetery. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.)

LASLEY
Mr. Henry Doub Lasley, 66, of Creek View Family Care Home in Mebane died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital. Mr. Lasley was born July 26, 1934, to the late Robah Olin and Iva Sprinkle Lasley of Winston-Salem. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Emily Sue Lasley Myers of Eden and Mary Lasley Milam of Greensboro. Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel, with the Rev. Douglas Hochmuth officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12 to 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

LEINBACH
Dr. Laurence Brickenstein Leinbach, MD, of 1060 Kenleigh Circle died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born Feb. 22, 1926, in Winston-Salem to Clarence Theodore and Margaret Brickenstein Leinbach. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Harvard Medical School. He retired from Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center after 40 years as Professor Emeritus of Radiological Sciences. He was a lifelong member of Home Moravian Church, participating in the band and many other church functions. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn McNair Leinbach; his daughter, Renna Margaret Leinbach Hawkins; and a brother, Clarence Theodore Leinbach Jr. Surviving are two daughters, Beth L Hepler (Eddie) of Clemmons and Kathryn L. Brown (Bruce) of Winston-Salem; a son, Laurence B. Leinbach Jr. (Carla) of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, Bobby W. Hawkins of Clemmons; a sister, Margaret L. Kolb, a brother, William J. Leinbach, and a sister-in-law, Katherine Leinbach allof Winston-Salem. Surviving grandchildren are Elizabeth Helper, Brad Hawkins, Renna Hawkins, Graham Hawkins, George Brown, Rebecca Brown, Andrew Brown, Mikhaila Leinbach, Kaitryana Leinbach, Laurence Leinbach III and Anthony Leinbach. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Home Moravian Church by the Rev. Lehoma Goode, the Rev. Gerald Harris and the Rev. Scott Venerable. MABE
DANBURY -- Mrs. Helen Keller Lawson Mabe, 86, of 2575 Piney Grove Church Road died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 21, 1913, in Stokes County to the late Rufus and Lula Tucker Lawson. Mrs. Mabe was a mother and homemaker and of the Primitive Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Handy Mabe. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, James Sidney (Betty) Mabe and George T. (Barbara) Mabe of Danbury; two sisters, Etta Whitten of Germanton and Ida Rogers of Lawsonville; four grandchildren, James Ray Mabe, Tammy M. Brown, Elizabeth M. Johnson and Amanda M. Tilley; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Nelson Funeral Home, with Brother Don Collins and Elder J.H. Keaton officiating. MARSHALL
KING -- Margaret Knight Hauser Marshall, 76, of Village Care of King died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, after being in declining health for several years. She was born Aug. 12, 1924, in Stokes County to Preston E. and Verlie Jessup Knight. Margaret retired from Hanes Hosiery in 1982 after 37 years of service. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph E. Hauser in 1968 and second husband, Ed Marshall in 1985 and a sister, Della Martin. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Perry Carroll of King; a granddaughter, Jennifer (Joel) Noped of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Justin Carroll of Charlotte; stepdaughter, Melissa (Charlie) Wilson of Elizabethtown, Ky.; stepson, Maurice (Catherine) Marshall of Westfield; three step-grandchildren, Jason, Andrew and Kathryn Wilson; a sister, Ruth (Roger) Hauser of King. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Poplar Springs Church of Christ with Ralph Sproles and Don Wallace, ministers officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Slate Funeral Home in King and other times at her daughter's home on Hartgrove Road in King. NEWSON
YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Thema Moorefield Newsom, 94, passed away Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Willowbrook Healthcare Center. She was born in Stokes County Dec. 23, 1905, to the late Frank Moorefield and Fannie Wall Moorefield. She was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother. She was married to the late Charles Newsom. Surviving are a son, Frank Newsom (Patty) of Yadkinville; a brother, Joseph Clinton Moorefield, of Springfield, Texas; a sister, Anita M. Brown, of Hampton, Va.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, William Floyd Newson, and two brothers. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Reavis Funeral Home Yadkinville Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Atkins officiating. Burial will follow in Yadkin Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Reavis Funeral Home is serving the Newsom family.

NORMAN
PFAFFTOWN -- Mrs. Coetta Vetree Hall Smith Norman, 97, formerly of East Bend, passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Vienna Village after years of declining health. Mrs. Norman was born Oct. 16, 1903, to Radford Lackey and Betty Fletcher Hall. She was of the Baptist faith and a faithful member of Becks Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Mrs. Norman was preceded in death by her husband, James Ernest Smith, on Feb. 26, 1956, and her husband, Henry Arvil Norman, on April 19, 1977; and a daughter, Gladys Hauser. Surviving Mrs. Norman are a daughter, Betty Jo (Donald) Linville, of Rural Hall; two sons, Donald (Mary) Smith of Pfafftown and James (Bettie) Smith of Cornelius; a brother, Howard (Mozelle) Hall, of Boonville; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Services for Mrs. Norman will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend with the Rev. Jim Nelson officiating. PHELPS
WALKERTOWN -- Mrs. Nanna Shouse Phelps, 60, passed away at her home Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000. She was born in Forsyth County May 15, 1940, to Joesephus and Geneva ell Williams Shouse. She was a member of the Faith Chapel Church of the Living God where she was a member of the choir for many years. Surviving are a daughter, Ms. Sandra K. Phelps of the home; sons, Mr. Herman Lee Shouse and fiancee Rebecca Livengood Jones of Winston-Salem , and Mr. Kenneth W. Phelps of the home; grandchildren Sarah and Joseph Lee Livengood Shouse; a great-grandchild, Brandon Lee McCaskill; a brother, Robert Lee Shouse of Winston-Salem; half brother , David Cliffton Shouse of Winston-Salem; two godsons; a stepgranddaughter; and three stepgrandsons. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at the Faith Chapel Church of the Living God by Bishop Robert S. Cranfield. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. POORMAN
Mrs. Marie Styers Poorman, 79, of Winston-Salem died Dec. 17, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a period of declining health. A resident of Forsyth County all her life, she was born Feb. 21, 1921, to the late K.C. and Lillian W. Styers and was the fifth child of 13 children born to Mr. and Mrs. Styers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank W. Poorman and Clarence V. Hamm; son-in-law Ernest Matthews Sr.; sisters Hazel S. Brenner, Irene S. Hayes, Kathleen S. Collins, Alma S. Brown and Mary S. Moore; brother Charles (Buck) Styers; brothers-in-law, Marvin D. Brown, James Collins and Paul C. Ellis; niece Robin Styers; and nephews Michael and Rodney Styers. Mrs. Poorman was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. She owned and operated Marie's Restaurant on Old Walkertown Road for 16 years and retiring Oct. 15, 1999. She was previously employed by Styers Meat Market, R.J. Reynolds Co., Swift Co., Tom's Restaurant, Stone's Restaurant and Harold's Restaurant before opening her own business. She was married to Mr. Poorman for 55 years before to his passing Nov. 26, 2000. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Hamm Matthews of Burlington, Iowa; a son, Douglas W. Poorman and wife Suzanne and grandson, Matthew Poorman of Oldtown; four grandchildren, Ernest Matthews Jr. and wife Lynn of Everett, Washington, Delores Matthews Barthel and husband Jon of Iowa City, Iowa, Jacob Matthews and wife Sheila of Greenfield, Iowa, and Kimberly Matthews McAfee of Corvell, Iowa; 18 step-great-grandchildren of Washington and Iowa and a step-great-great-grandchild of Washington; sisters Betty S. Hunter of Charlotte and Sarah S. Ellis of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law Samuel and Ruby Styers, John and Pauline Styers of Winston-Salem, Harold and Mary Alice Styers of Patrick Springs, Va., and Frank and Sue Styers of Lexington; brother-in-law Dayton Hayes of Winston-Salem; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lorene H. and Roger Willard of Winston-Salem and Eugene and Peggy Hamm of Madison; sisters-in-law Frances Poorman of Ohio and Thelma Hawkins of Madison. Also surviving are a host of nieces and nephews, special friends, Jiles Caldwell, her hairdresser for 36 years, E.J. and Merlo Grubbs, Patricia Shoemaker, her longtime employee, Virginia Roberston, Ruth and "Skeez" Morris, Douglas Donnelly, Robert Sell and many other friends whom she loved and were so faithful to her. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel by Chaplain Rennie Adcock, the Rev. Dewey Griffin and the Rev. Gary Styers. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. REID
Mrs. Florence Helen Reid, 81, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 18, 1919, in Wake County to Thomas Boyd and Bertha Reynolds. Mrs. Reid was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Prior to her marriage in 1948, she graduated from the Women's College and was the executive assistant to Dr. Frank Graham who was the chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Preceding Mrs. Reid in death was her husband, David Edward Reid Sr. Surviving are two sons, James Alan Reid and wife Sue of Edgewater, Md., and Walter Forrest Reid of Winston-Salem; a treasured granddaughter, Elizabeth Caitlan Reid of Edgewater; two sisters, Mary Berle Johnson of Sylvan Beach, N.Y., and Virginia Rapport of Washington, D.C.; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, by Dr. Bob Nations. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

RICHARDSON
Mr. Wayne Lowrey Richardson, 75, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Sept. 15, 1925, to Zeb V. and Maurice Lowrey Richardson in Winston-Salem. Mr. Richardson was a retired engineer with AT&T. He was a member of Telephone Pioneers, graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School, Mars Hill and Georgia Tech. He painted maps on school grounds, was a volunteer for Lifeline at Forsyth Medical Center for a number of years and a volunteer at the Crosby. Mr. Richardson is survived by his wife, Rosa Garrison Richardson of the home; a daughter, Marcia; two sons, Daniel and Scott; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home. ROSE
YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Edna Pruitt Rose, 73, of Neelie Road, a devoted mother and grandmother who loved her family, passed away Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. She was born July 27, 1927, in Caswell County to the late Henry and Nellie Terrell Pruitt. Mrs. Rose was retired from Yadkin Nursing Center and was a member of Shacktown Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Rose Sr., on March 29, 2000, and a brother, Otis Pruitt. Surviving are her children, JoAnn R. Anderson and Thomas W. (Jean) Rose Jr. of Yadkinville, Wanda (Doug) Groce of Hamptonville and Nellie (Roy) Douglas and Donnie (Kim) Rose of Yadkinville; three grandchildren, Lorie Anne Rose, Thomas W. Rose III and Daniel Grey Rose, all of Yadkinville; sisters Almeda Hubbard and Bessie Walker of Danville, Va.; a brother, Bill Pruitt, of Surf City; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shacktown Church of Christ by Brother Lawrence Warden, Brother Joe McCollum and the Rev. Daniel Outen. She will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. SNYDER
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Mr. Donald Ogburn Snyder, 65, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at the Conway Nursing Center. Born Dec. 19, 1934, in Winston-Salem, he was the son of the late William L. and Nina Ogburn Snyder. Survivors include his brother, William L. Snyder Jr., and his wife, Dorothy G. Snyder, of Myrtle Beach. A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler's Funeral Home, Reynolda Chapel. Memorials can be made to Tara Hall Home for Boys, P.O. Box 955, Georgetown, S.C. 29442-0955. STANLEY
STONEVILLE -- Glen Stanley, 83, of 198 Starlight Road died Dec. 17, 2000, at Morehead Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Ridge-View Memorial Gardens. A native of McDowell County, W.Va., Mr. Stanley was a truck driver and a member of Providence Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Eva Moorefield Stanley, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Scott Irving, of Stoneville; a daughter, Glenda Tilley, of Bristol, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Sharon Stanley, of Stoneville; a sister, Dorothy Mills, of Eden; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

STEIFEL
Mrs. Marjorie Jones Steifel, 82, of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center after a short illness. Surrounding at the time of her death, her family was comforted by the fact that Mrs. Steifel was faithful and confident of her eternal life with God and His Son. Mrs. Steifel was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Sidney Gray Steifel, in 1989. Her husband was an owner of Steifel Mattress Co., a family business which discontinued in 1998 after 83 years. Also preceding her in death were her brother, Hal Davis Jones, and a sister, Dorothy Jones Sprinkle. Mrs. Steifel is survived by two daughters, Donna S. Crutchfield and her husband, Larry, of Wilmington and Marjorie S. Hendrix and her husband, David, of Winston-Salem; a son, S. Gray Steifel Jr., and his wife, Margaret, of Greensboro; seven grandchildren, S. Greg Crutchfield and his wife, Kimberly, of Aurora, Colo., Maj. Bryan L. Crutchfield and his wife, Michele, of Altus, Okla., Amy L. Crutchfield of Austin, Texas, Melanie D. Reavis and her husband, Lee, and Clifton G. Davis of Winston-Salem, Jennifer S. Ashford and her husband, Jim, of Charlotte and Marjorie A. Steifel of Greensboro; three special nieces by her deceased sister, Dorothy; and nine great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Salem cemetery by the Rev. Derry Barnhardt. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, 3543 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.
