Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at First Baptist Church in Madison. He was born Aug. 20, 1915, in Rockingham County, the 13th of 15 children of Yancey Ligon and Mary Elizabeth Morton Carter. He graduated from Madison High School and entered the U.S. Army as a private in 1934. He served in World War II, earning several medals, and the Korean War. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1958. After retiring from the Army, J.P. attended Wake Forest College in Winston-Salem, and graduated in 1961. He then began his second career, as a public-school educator. He had a lot of practice, having played "school" at the dinner table with his children for years. He taught social studies at Madison-Mayodan High School and then was the principal of Elliott Duncan Elementary School in Mayodan for several years before retiring in 1977. Then J.P. began his third career, as a town leader. He was elected mayor of Madison in 1977 and served for 12 years. He also served on the town board for an additional two years. In 1998, he was named Madison's Citizen of the Year. Throughout his various careers, J.P. was always very active in a variety of civic and religious activities. He served as a deacon of First Baptist Church, eventually becoming a lifetime deacon and a trustee. He was an enthusiastic member of the Madison Lions Club, always working hard selling brooms and light bulbs and at the agricultural fair and the Brunswick stews that were the club's fund-raising events. He had been president of the Lions Club and was recently made a Melvin Jones Fellow by the Lions Club. With his wife, he delivered Meals on Wheels. He had known far and wide for telling Br'er Rabbit stories to school and library groups, at nursing homes and to fortunate children. J.P. was a master gardner, often raising enough vegetables to feed many friends and neighbors. In his retirement, he raised a few beef cattle and enjoyed feeding them and trying to keep their fences mended. He enjoyed fishing and walking in the woods, reading and working double-crostic puzzles, but one of his greatest pleasures came from working. He liked to have his "troops" -- his wife, four children and later, his sons-in-law and grandsons -- helping him when he built something, cut firewood or otherwise had a good time. J.P. accomplished a lot and received a great deal of recognition during his life. He traveled widely and had many good experiences. About a year before his death, one of his grandsons asked him how he would like to be remembered. He said, "I'd like to be remembered for working hard all my life and being a help to a lot of people."
