ANDREW
Mrs. Lorena Manaugh Andrew, 82, of Brighton Gardens died Friday, Dec. 22, at Arbor Acres. She was born in Camargo, Ill., Feb. 2, 1918, to Guy Manaugh and Fayne Tullis Hall Manaugh. She had moved to Winston-Salem two months ago. Mrs. Andrew graduated from the University of Illinois in 1940 with degrees in music and mathematics. She was a featured soloist in six churches in Illinois, Minnesota and Connecticut. She had solo opera roles at the University of Illinois and taught mathematics and French at the high school level. She was vice president of a wholesale business in Woodstock, Ill. She was a member of the Woodstock Garden Club, the LaSalle, Illinois Garden Club and the United Methodist Church in Woodstock. She and her husband had traveled extensively, including three trips to mainland China. She is survived by her husband, Dan E. Andrew, whom she married in 1941; two sons, Dr. Ray Hall Andrew and wife, Dr. Susan Willis, of Winston-Salem and Dr. John Allan Andrew and wife, Dr. Lori Andrew, of Leesburg, Va.; a daughter, Lynne Andrew Dickerson, and husband, Francis, of Los Gatos, Calif., and six grandchildren. The time for a memorial service will be announced later. Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel is serving the Andrew family. Memorials may be made to Pfafftown Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), P.O. ASHLEY
HUBERT -- Robert William Ashley, 65, died at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern, Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Jones Funeral Home, Swansboro Chapel with the Rev. Gregg McGarvey officiating. Family will receive friends an hour before the services Tuesday and at other times at the home. Mr. Ashley was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from Pleasant Hardware Co. in Winston-Salem after 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pauline Wellons Ashley and Martin William Ashley. He is survived by his wife, Aileen Swindell Ashley, of the home; a daughter, Lisa Ashley Farrimond of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, Todd Farrimond of Winston-Salem and a grandson, Garrett Farrimond of Winston-Salem. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 12004, Jacksonville, NC 28546.

BEESON
Mr. Harry Leon Beeson, 76, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born July 28, 1924, in Winston-Salem to H. Dewitt and Margie Willard Beeson who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Willard Beeson. Mr. Beeson was a member of Knollwood Baptist Church and was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served with the U.S. Naval Air Corps during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Betty McCall Beeson, of the home; a brother, H. Dewitt Beeson and wife, Nancy, of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; a sister-in-law, Orpha Beeson, of Winston-Salem and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Salem cemetery by the Rev. Tom Bagnel and Dr. Chris Chapman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Knollwood Baptist Church, 330 Knollwood St., Winston-Salem, NC 27014 or to the charity of the donor's choice. (The arrangements are by Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel.)

BILLINGS
MIDWAY -- Betty "Jo" Bauguss Billings, 66, of 358 Woodtree Lane, Winston-Salem, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Hebron United Church of Christ, where she was a member. The Rev. Jeffrey F. Hammonds will conduct the service. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Mrs. Billings was born in Blowing Rock, June 5, 1934, to Oddie Clarence Bauguss and Lula Lentz Bauguss. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Wilshire Ladies Golf Association. She is survived by her husband, James R. Billings, of the home; a daughter, Vicki Billings Over, of Atlanta, Ga.; sons James Gregory Billings and wife, Leticia, of Clearwater, Fla. and Joseph Marvin Billings and wife, Carla, of Loris, S.C.; grandchildren, Genya, Tana, Austin, Keaton, Tayler and Madison; and brothers, Tommy and Johnny Bauguss, both of North Wilkesboro. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall an hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hospice and Palliative CareCenter , 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Suite 201, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel is serving the family of Mrs. Billings.

ELLIOTT
Mr. Charles Ross Elliott, 66, of 6530 Tom St., Pfafftown, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Rutherford County April 16, 1934, to Johnathan Baxter Elliott and Catherine Bennett Elliott. Mr. Elliott was a member of Cedar Forest Baptist Church, the Rust and Dust Club and the Vienna Civic Club. He worked for Piedmont Airlines for 33 years and retired from U.S. Airways in 1991. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Walker Elliott in 1989. Surviving are two daughters, Gail and Cindy Elliott of the home; two sons, Baxter Elliott of Winston-Salem and Mark Elliott and wife, Pam of Advance; four grandchildren, Johnathan Elliott of Illinois, David Elliott and Julie Elliott of Winston-Salem and Christopher Elliott of Advance; two brothers, Bruce Elliott and wife, Carolyn of Charlotte and Fred Elliott and wife, Almetta of Lancaster, S.C. and a sister, Catherine Taylor of Rutherfordton. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Cedar Forest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Neal Wilcox. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m Tuesday. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

KNIGHT
Mrs. Sylvia Hall Knight, widow of Eddie Houston Knight Jr., died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Knight was born in Stokes County to the late Lester Bryan and Ethel Gatewood Hall. She was a graduate of Walnut Cove High School and a member of Fairview Moravian Church and the Old Town Woman's Club. She was retired from the former Davis Department Store. Mrs. Knight was also preceded in death by a brother, Maxie G. Hall. Survivors include her two children, a daughter, Mrs. Debbie K. Swaim, and husband, Keith, of Jonesville; a son, David R. Knight, of Winston-Salem; a sister, Mrs. Peggy Hall Wall, and husband, John T. Wall, of King; a brother, R. Talmadge Hall, and wife, Carolyn, of Pfafftown; her mother-in-law, Viola A. Knight; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Della B. Hall. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with the Rev. Neil Routh officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

MAREK
Marylou Marek, 73, of 4229 Sandhurst Drive, Clemmons, died Saturday at Meadowbrook Manor after a long illness. She was born Feb. 18, 1927, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Albert and Bertha Winterol. She came to Winston-Salem in 1968 and was a longtime employee of Sam's Gourmet and Sam's Canterbury restaurants, retiring in 1989. Sisters Irene Hayes and Helen Sennett, brother Albert Winterol and granddaughter April Phipps preceded her in death. She is survived by a brother, Robert Winterol, of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patti and David Fishel of Valrico, Fla., Susan and Chuck Munday of the home and Debra Marek of Seattle, Wash. She is also survived by grandsons Chris Davidson and John Phipps of Clemmons; great-grandson Anthony Pardue of Lexington and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4820 Kinnamon Road, Clemmons. The family requests that memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Arrangements are being handled by Memorial Funeral Chapel of Lewisville.

MARTIN
Mr. Roy McCoy Martin, 73, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at J.R. Jones Medical Center in King. Mr. Martin was born Feb. 11, 1927, to the late Dona Martin. Mr. Martin was formerly a self-employed mechanic and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include several cousins, Jeannie Tobler, Alice Easter, Faye Horton, Allie Easter, Tom Portis, Carlene Creed, Wade Martin, Betty Clifton, all of Mount Airy; Twain Norman, Lucille Barker and Billy Martin, all of Lowgap; Elvia Amburn of Pilot Mountain and Kyle Norman of Germanton. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Old Round Peak Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Elder Steve Mosley and Elder Walter Branch, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state 30 minutes at the church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.

McGEE
Mr. James L. McGee, 62, of Bethania Station Road, died at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a period of declining health. He was born in Forsyth County March 11, 1938, the son of the late James Monroe McGee Sr. and Louise Griffin McGee. Throughout his career he was involved with route and retail sales. Surviving are a son, L. Keith McGee, and wife, Tracie, of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Teri Baxley and husband, Dean, of Wallburg and Angela Ring and husband, Shane, of Winston-Salem; a step-daughter, Rhonda Rhodes of Rural Hall; six grandchildren, Heather, Kendall, Kenny, Cole, Candace and Claudia; eight sisters, Shirley, Brenda, Virginia, Linda, Sandra, Karen, Dian and Debbie and a brother, Jimmy; a special friend, Sue Everhart, and many good friends in his 14 years with A.A. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel by the Rev. Charles Sparks. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The McGee family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the funeral home and requests that memorials be made to Senior Services/Meals on Wheels, 836 Oak St., Tobacco Square, Suite 320, Winston-Salem, NC 27101-1407.

RENIGAR
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Glena W. Renigar, 87, formerly of Winston-Salem, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Dec. 21, 2000. Born Oct. 9, 1913, in Scottsburg, Ind., she was the daughter of the late William and Katie Watson. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Leslie O. Renigar Sr. Glena was a member of Northside Baptist Church. Surviving are her son, Leslie O. Renigar Jr. and his wife Marsha of Charlottesville; her granddaughter, Sharon J. Renigar of Charlottesville; and a grandson, William Kevin Renigar and his wife Laura Renigar of Charlottesville. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Northside Baptist Church, Rio Road with the Rev. William Templeton officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, Charlottesville. Interment will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Marshall Baptist Church cemetery in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, for research only, 490 Westfield Road, Charlottesville, NC 22901.

SNOW
THURMOND -- Mr. Lonnie Blackburn Snow, 94, of Possum Trot Road, passed away Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Elkin HealthCare Center. Mr. Snow was born in Surry County to the late Ida Holder and Byrd W. Snow. Mr. Snow was a retired farmer and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vena Scott Snow. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Josephine Snow of Thurmond; two daughters and a son-in-law, Helen Morrison of Boonville and Hilda and Henry Bryant of Thurmond; four brothers, Winfield Snow of Statesville, A.D. and Warren Snow of Winston-Salem, A.C. Snow of Raleigh; a sister, Zetta Haynes of Dobson; 10 grandchildren, Libby Simpson, Alan Snow, Aldean Snow, Arlene Snow, Joe Snow, Christy Snow, Larry Bryant, Mike Bryant, Rex Bryant and Tony Roberts, 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Pleasant View Baptist Church by the Rev. Finley McCoury and the Rev. Woodrow Wishon. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Pleasant View Baptist Church. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is in charge of arrangements.

STAFFORD
Mrs. Minnie Teague Stafford, 86, of 1931 Highway 66 South, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at the Bradford Village West. Mrs. Stafford was born in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late Martin Ector and Connie Mae Stafford Teague and was a member of the Bunker Hill Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Blaine Stafford, Sr. and son, Hubert B. Stafford, Jr. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Max A. and Shelda Stafford of Kernersville; a brother, Blaine Teague of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Patti Joyce, Joyce Williams, Connie Khulman and Mark Stafford and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hayworth-Miller Cain Funeral Chapel by Elder John Wingfield and the Rev. Evon Thigpen with burial to follow in the Bunker Hill Methodist cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Forsyth, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

TATUM
James William Tatum, 77, died Friday, Dec. 22, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 14, 1923, in Mount Airy to Clarence Webb and Mae Sleight Tatum. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, Class of 1943 and attended Elon College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as as officer in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II and was a member of the Piedmont Masonic Lodge #771. Mr. Tatum had many interests and hobbies. He worked hard to restore and preserve commercial property in the West End of Winston-Salem winning the award of merit from the Winston-Salem Preservation Coalition for restoring the Fourth Street Townhouses located at the corner of Burke and Fourth Streets. He was a lifelong student of history, which led to his avid interest in genealogy. He operated several businesses in Winston-Salem including Tatum's Antiques, Salem Supply Co. and K&W Restaurant Supply Co. His last years were spent assisting his son at Brookstown Antiques. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Mary Ellington Tatum; three children, Mary Ellington Tatum, James Edgar (Eddie) Tatum (Victoria Hersh) and William (Bill) Franklin Tatum (Joan Howell); six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Angie Gordon and three brothers, John Tatum of Winston-Salem, Max Tatum of Walnut Cove and Al Tatum of Daytona Beach, Fla. A sister, Mary Robin Abrams of Deya, Spain preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Donald P. Goodheart and the Rev. John E. Shields officiating. Burial will be at Oakdale cemetery in Mount Airy. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Kidney Foundation of North Carolina, 5950 Fairview Road, Charlotte, NC 28208 and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4265 Brownsboro Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

VENABLE
MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Margie Mae Powell Venable, 82, widow of Floyd Roosevelt Venable, 1517 Siloam Road, Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy. Mrs. Venable was born April 3, 1918, in Surry County to James Walker and Katie Belle Powell. She was a homemaker and a member of Blackwater United Methodist Church. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia and Ben Mauldin of Mount Airy, Jo Nell and Buck Boles of Mount Airy, Janice and Sam Shackleford of Randleman and Rita and Randy Pack of Westfield; three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Libby Venable of Mount Airy, Bob and Ann Venable of Robbins and Marty Venable of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a brother, Calvin Powell of Sophia. Mrs. Venable was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Roosevelt Venable and a daughter, Mary Rachel Venable, three infant children, a granddaughter, Karen Sutherland. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Blackwater United Methodist Church by the Rev. J. Cecil Hill and the Rev. Patty Choplin. Burial will follow at Blackwater United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 25, 2000. The Venable family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

WATSON
Mr. Dennis Wayne Watson Sr., 53, of 4418 Hunter Oaks Court, High Point, husband of Cindy Jo Ellington Watson, passed away Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at High Point Regional Medical Center in High Point after a six-month illness. Mr. Watson was born in Surry County Jan. 25, 1947, son of the late James Howard Watson Sr. and Myrtle Emma Marsh Watson. He was co-founder of Magnolia Graphics and was of the Baptist faith. On Nov. 18, 1972, he was married to Cindy Jo Ellington Watson, who survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Christa Joanne and Jon Derek Spanburg of High Point; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis Wayne Watson Jr. and Jennifer Watson of Davidson; a granddaughter, Kallie Payton Spanburg of High Point; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lura Jean Boyles of Siloam, Wenona Westmoreland of High Point and Rita and Al Johnson and Charlotte and Eddie Cassell, all of Ararat; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wallace and Gale Watson of Ararat and Tommy and Muriel Watson of Mount Airy; a brother-in-law, Robert Simpson of Siloam; a special uncle, Charles Marsh, of Ararat and a special aunt, Stacey Watson Venable, of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Watson was preceded in death by a sister, Gilda Watson Simpson, and a brother, James Howard Watson Jr. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Little Mountain Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Bill Watson with burial in the Little Mountain Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service. The family may be contacted at other times at the home of Charlotte and Eddie Cassell, Radar Road, Ararat. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Little Mountain Baptist Church, c/o Verla V. Phillips, 930 Siloam Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.

WHITAKER
YADKINVILLE -- Mr. Nathan Eugene Whitaker, 55, of Country Club Road passed away Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Hoots Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 16, 1945, in Virginia to the late Howard and Stella Whitaker Whitaker. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Donna Whitaker of Yadkinville; two grandsons, Tony and Austin Whitaker; a sister, Louise Wood of Dobson and a brother, Michael Whitaker of Yadkinville. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Deep Creek Friends Meeting cemetery by the Rev. Billy Seats and Pastor Bruce Freeman. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 25, 2000 at the residence of Mr. Whitaker's brother, Michael Whitaker, 620 Coolidge Street, Yadkinville. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the family.
