SUTTON
FORT MILL, S.C. -- Mrs. Belle Hurst Farnell Sutton, 79, died Dec. 23, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Born Feb. 3, 1921, in Hubert, Mrs. Sutton was a daughter of the late Leland Borden Farnell and Katie Bell Henderson Farnell. She was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College in Wilson with a double major in French and history. Mrs. Sutton was a devoted member and elder of Riverview Presbyterian Church and a former teacher in the Fort Mill school district. Mrs. Sutton devoted her entire life to her family. She was a loving wife to her husband of 54 years, Mr. Douglas F. Sutton, who preceded her in death. During her marriage, she raised three daughters, instilling in them a deep love of family and God. Later in life her grandchildren gave her great joy. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Riverview Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Barry Lambert and the Rev. Dr. James McGill officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park. The family will also receive friends at the family home. Mrs. Sutton is survived by three daughters, Catherine Bryant of Winston-Salem, Elizabeth S. Spratt and her husband, Mike Spratt, of Fort Mill and Victoria S. Sutton and her husband, Chuck Bing, of Cornelius; her brothers, Lee B. Farnell of Rock Hill, S.C., and Edward "Jute" Farnell and his wife, Gladys Farnell, of Williamson; and grandchildren Scott Christopher Bryant of Winston-Salem, Lt. Jeffrey David Bryant and his wife, Lt. Jennifer A. Bryant, of Little Rock, Ark., Zachary Sutton Spratt of Fort Mill, Sharon E. Bing of Charlotte and Darren E. Bing and his wife, Candice E. Bing, of Charlotte. Memorials may be made to Riverview Presbyterian Church, 124 N. Sutton Road, Fort Mill, SC 29708. TATUM
James William Tatum, 77, died Friday, Dec. 22, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 14, 1923, in Mount Airy, N.C. to Clarence Webb and Mae Sleight Tatum. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, Class of 1943 and attended Elon College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as an officer in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II and was a member of the Piedmont Masonic Lodge #711. Mr. Tatum had many interests and hobbies. He worked hard to restore and preserve commercial property in the West End of Winston-Salem winning the Award of Merit from the Winston-Salem Preservation Coalition for restoring the Fourth Street Townhouses located at the corner of Burke and Fourth Streets. He was a lifelong student of history, which led to his avid interest in genealogy. He operated several businesses in Winston-Salem including Tatum's Antiques, Salem Supply Co. and K&W Restaurant Supply Co. His last years were spent assisting his son at Brookstown Antiques. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Mary Ellington Tatum; three children, Mary Ellington Tatum, James Edgar (Eddie) Tatum (Victoria Hersh) and William (Bill) Franklin Tatum (Joan Howell); six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Angie Gordon and three brothers, John Tatum of Winston-Salem, Max Tatum of Walnut Cove and Al Tatum of Daytona Beach, Fla. A sister, Mary Robin Abrams of Deya, Spain preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Donald P. Goodheart and The Rev. John E. Shields officiating. Burial will be at Oakdale cemetery in Mount Airy. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Kidney Foundation of North Carolina, 5950 Fairview Road, Charlotte, NC 28208 and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4265 Brownsboro Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

TAYLOR
KING -- Mr. Bobby Luther Whitt Taylor, 61, died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000. He was born June 10, 1939, in Galax, Va., to Paul and Ada McFall Taylor. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Surviving are a daughter, Yvonne (Mark) Hall of Pinnacle; a son, Robert Taylor of King; four grandchildren, Justin Mitchell, Eddie Hall, Danielle Hall and Courtney Taylor; his former wife, Linda Taylor of King; two sisters, Jeanette and Aretta Taylor of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Arnold Taylor of Myrtle Beach, S.C. No services have been scheduled.

BENTLEY
Mrs. Marlyn Esther "Butch" Bentley, 88, of Winston-Salem went to be with the Lord Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Springwood Care. She was born Oct. 9, 1912, in Brown Summitt to J. Luther and Mamie Landreth Brann. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was preceded in death by her husband, Herman T. Bentley. Surviving are her close friends, Lacy and Alice Sandridge of Davidson County and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Bill Chatman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements.)

BESS
Mr. Charmer Lee Bess Jr., 28, was born June 8, 1972, the son of the late Charmer Lee Bess Sr. and Edith Jones Bess. He departed this life Monday morning, Dec. 25, 2000, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville following an extended illness. C.B. or Lil Charmer as family and friends called him attended the public schools in Forsyth County, having played football at Carver High School, graduated with the class of 1990 and attended WSSU. Growing up, he played football and baseball with the Pop Warner Leagues of Winston-Salem and Walkertown. During his early teenage years, Mr. Bess joined Goler Memorial AME Zion Church, having served on the junior usher board. Mr. Bess leaves to cherish his loving memory his loving mother, Edith Jones Bess of the home; a sister, Tamala Jones of Atlanta; a brother, Jamel Nance of the home; grandparents Viola Jones and Ruth Bess of Winston-Salem and Melvin Jones (Shirley) of Bridgeport, Conn.; four aunts, Shirley Agee (Robert) of Clemmons, Beverly Bess of Philadelphia, Wilhelmenia Lindsay (James) of Midway and Peggy Newell (Owen) of Winston-Salem; three uncles, Kenneth Bess of Charlotte, Arthur Jones (Kim) and Melvin Jones (Crystal) of Winston-Salem; and a host of cousins, great-aunts, great-uncles and friends. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Grace United Community Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joseph C. Parks officiating. The family can be contacted at 4129 Sunflower Circle.

BRYANT
DOBSON -- Mrs. Daisy Marie Bryant, 66, of 300 Surry Manor Lane passed away Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at her home. Mrs. Bryant was born April 19, 1934, in Eden to Sam and Tiny Lewis. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Danley and Gloria J. Bryant of Pilot Mountain; four sons, Walter Lee Bryant of Mount Airy, Melvin E. Bryant and Kenneth Roger Bryant of Winston-Salem and Steve Wayne Bryant of Pilot Mountain; two sisters, Pearl Phipps and Virginia Lewis; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bryant was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Clayton Bryant. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home by the Rev. Don Collins. Burial will follow at Rockford Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at the funeral home. The Bryant family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

CLODFELTER
Mr. Thomas "Tom" William Clodfelter, 42, of Rural Hall died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 25, 2000. He was born in Greensboro on Sept. 29, 1958, to James David and Suzane Ogden Clodfelter. He was of the Presbyterian faith. Mr. Clodfelter was an avid fisherman and loved to read and write poetry. He had many creative pursuits and many friends. Tom was a 1976 graduate of Western Alamance High School in Burlington, and he graduated from Wingate College and attended Appalachian State University. He was a longtime employee of IMC Fertilizer Inc. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Sharon Gerwig Clodfelter of Rural Hall; two stepchildren, Emily and William; his parents, Dave and Sue Clodfelter of Winston-Salem; a sister, Sandy McCabe and husband Darrell of Hopewell, Va.; his brother, Michael Clodfelter and wife Phyllis of Kernersville; two nephews, Ryan and David; Tom also leaves behind several uncles, aunts and a host of cousins and devoted friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Henry J. Keating. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.

CONRAD
Mrs. Lucile Sprinkle Conrad, 96, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Springwood Care. She was born April 30, 1904, in Forsyth County to the late Benjamin Arthur and Maggie Speas Sprinkle. Mrs. Conrad was a member of Olivet Moravian Church, where she served as organist and pianist for several years. She taught piano in the public schools and at home for a number of years. Mrs. Conrad was a helpful neighbor and shared in her community. She was famous for her chicken pies. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Theodore Conrad, and two brothers, Gaylord and Speas Sprinkle. She is survived by a son, Gilbert A. Conrad of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Olivet Moravian Church, by the Rev. Douglas Rights. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Olivet Moravian Church, 2205 Olivet Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

COOK
DANBURY -- Mr. Floyd Lesley Cook, 87, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital. He was born in Davie County on April 27, 1913, the son of the late Harm and Pernie Harris Cook. As a young man he came to Stokes County and was with the CCC Camp and the construction of Hanging Rock State Park. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Gladice Mabe Cook, and five brothers, Gilmer Cook, Cliff Cook, Fred Cook, Harvel Cook and Ray Cook. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Lawrence (Mae) Wood of Lawsonville, and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Payne officiating. Burial will be at noon Thursday at Snow Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday after the service at the funeral home. CRUMP
Mrs. Ruth Holden-Crump, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., expired early Christmas morning Monday, December 25, 2000, in New York at Beth Israel Hospital. A few hours before her death she was surrounded by friends of her Quaker faith as well as three generations of her hometown friends, Dr. Barbara K. Phillips, Mrs. Tammy Williams-Blackwell and Master Chali Blackwell of Bloomfield, N.J. Carrying out her request for a Quaker service, inhumation will be in the Friends cemetery, Prospect Park, Brooklyn, N.Y., on Saturday, January 6, 2001. Her remains are at the Crestwood Funeral Home, 33 Spring St ., New York, N.Y. Mrs. Ruth Holden-Crump was born from the union of Boyd Holden and Helen Christian Holden Bason. She was the granddaughter of W.T. and Almeta Christian. She was preceded in death by all of her immediate family. While residing in Winston-Salem, she was a public-school music teacher and longtime organist at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Persons desiring additional information may contact Dr. Barbara K. FERRELL
Mrs. Marie Langley Ferrell, 94, formerly of Ridge Road, Lexington, died December 25, 2000, at Silas Creek Manor. She was born in Wilson County on October 30, 1906, to Van Buren and Maggie Bates Langley. Mrs. Ferrell was preceded in death by her husband, Bertie, in 1974, and a son, Bobby, in 1990. She is survived by one son, Jerry F. Ferrell and wife Jessie of Lexington; two daughters, Ellen Hardwick of Winston-Salem and Sandra Yukers and husband Norman of Lilburn, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Van B. Langley Jr. of Wilmington. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 28, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Chesapeake, Va., with the Rev. Norman Yukers officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Midway United Methodist Church, 9795 Old U.S. Highway 52, Lexington, NC 27295.

FISH
Mr. Kenneth Charles Fish, 66, of Winston-Salem died early Monday morning, Dec. 25, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Nov. 10, 1934, in Haywood County to Fred and Ruby Lowe Fish. Mr. Fish was retired from Roadway Express Trucking Co. Surviving are five daughters and their husbands, Debbie and Bob Poole of Winston-Salem, Becky and Dave Linville of Archdale, Cindy and Keith Wall of Winston-Salem, Penny Holder and Kevin Thorne of Hickory and Tracy Blevins of Kernersville; the mother of his five daughters, Billie B. Baumgardner; three sisters, Pauline Beasley of Walkertown, Lena Jo VanDiver and Susie Duval of Winston-Salem; two brothers, James and Gary Fish of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Jennings officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

FRAZIER
Mr. Anthony S. Frazier, a.k.a. "Amp," 37, of 2108 Francis St., Winston-Salem departed this life Dec. 21, 2000, at N.C. Baptist Hospital. He was born in Akron, Ohio, to the late John and Edna Frazier. Mr. Frazier was a graduate of Parkland High School class of 1981 and was self-employed. He was a member of the Carver Road Church of Christ. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Vicke Gilliam; two children, Anthony S. Frazier Jr. and Antronette Frazier; three sisters, Fayey Frazier, Donna Gantt and Marland Marlin, all of Winston-Salem; a brother, John F. Frazier III; two devoted friends, Jessie Knotts and Antwan Rhyne Sr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Carver Road Church of Christ with Brother Cecil officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. KING -- Mr. Frank W. Garner, 80, of Flynt Road, husband of Ona Ruth Boyles Garner died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Sept. 5, 1920, to Boston W. and Rebekah Knight Garner. The body is at Slate Funeral Home in King with arrangements pending.

GREEN
Mr. Johnnie Edward Green of 1542 24th St., Winston-Salem departed this life Dec. 20, 2000, at NC Baptist Hospital. He was born to the late Robert Caldwell and Ruth Green. He leaves to cherish his memory a brother, Willie Earl Green; two sisters, Sandra Dianne Green and Jean Green Allen; three aunts, Mrs. Mary Caldwell, Mrs. Katherine Squire and Mrs. Sarah L. Brown; a special friend, John and Ruby Norwood and staff; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27 at the Frances C. and Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. GREENE
LEXINGTON -- Billy Baxter Greene, 78, of Queens Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, in Lexington Memorial Hospital after an illness of one month. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Trinity United Methodist Church, where he was a member, by the Rev. John Taylor and the Rev. Derry Barnhardt. Burial will be at Forest Hill Memorial Park with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3074. Mr. Greene was born in Cleveland County on June 12, 1922, to William Edmond Greene and Verdie Wilkie Greene. He retired as production supervisor from The Dispatch after 35 years of service. At Trinity United Methodist Church he served as lay leader, chairman of the administrative board, choir member and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Greene served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served as past commander for the VFW Post 3074, and was current vice commander of the Amvets Post 13 and a member of the American Legion Post 8. He was a charter member and past president of the Lexington Sertoma Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Barber Greene, on March 3, 1995, and his brothers Ralph and Fred Greene. Survivors include sons Steve Greene and wife Gail, Donald Greene and wife Alison, both of Lexington, and Paul (Pat) Greene of Harrisburg, Pa. and Kenny Greene and wife Joyce of Southern Pines; 10 grandchildren, Stefanie, Ashley, Will, Carly, Cameron, Amy, Patricia, Jamie, Jacqueline and Sara; three great-grandchildren, Jessica, Jordan and Taylor; and brother Lloyd Greene of Augusta, Ga. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home and at other times at the home at 409 Queens Drive. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 902 S. Main St., Lexington, or to the charity of the donor's choice.

GREENE
Mrs. Irene Elma Redmon Greene, 88, of Oak Summit Nursing Center died Dec. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Stokes County Feb. 2, 1912, to James Franklin and Lillie Isom Redmon. Mrs. Greene was preceded in death by her husband, Vilas R. Greene, and a daughter, Donna G. Parks. She was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and the North Forsyth Civic Club. Mrs. Greene is survived by a sister, Bertchie Paschal of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Dawn Rothrock of Winston-Salem, who was her caretaker and provider and Krista Parks George of King; a great-granddaughter, Ellen Brooke Wolff of King; and several nieces and nephews. A service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Jim Cohn. Burial will follow the service. The family will receive friends following the service.

GRISWOLD
Sarah Boggs Griswold was born April 17, 1946, and died Christmas Eve at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She is lovingly remembered and cherished by her two daughters; son; and four grandchildren. May she rest in everlasting peace. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Winston-Salem. Donations may be made in her memory in place of flowers to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

HAGA
INDEPENDENCE, Va. -- Virginia Moxley Haga, 82, passed away Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Twin City County Regional Hospital, Galax, Va. She was born Feb. 15, 1918, to Lennie and Nannie Cox Moxley. Mrs. Haga was the widow of Ernest Haga and a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn H. Cox. Surviving are seven daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Steve McLeod of Winston-Salem, Barbara and Roger Cole and Sandra and Howard Halsey all of Mouth of Wilson, Va., Mary Jane and Randy Ferrell and Kathy Haga all of Wytheville, Va. and Glenda and Charles Ward and Scottie and William Cox all of Independence; five sons-and-daughters-in-law, Colen and Peggy Haga, Ronald and Sue Haga, Bill and Linda Haga and Thomas Haga all of Independence and Jim and Suzanne Haga of Bland, Va.; a son-in-law, Alvin Cox of Indenpendence, Va.; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Eula Thompson of Ayden, Mamie Wingate of Broad Kill Beach, Del. and Phyllis and Bill Riter of Newark, Del.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Sam and June Moxley, Robert and Edith Moxley and H.T. and Lettie Moxley all of Independence; 22 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Osborne, the Rev. Sandy Hendrix, the Rev. Fred Jennings and the Rev. Katherine Haga officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Flowers will be appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to the Mountain View Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Glenda Ward, 2915 Graystone Road, Independence, VA 24348. The family will be at the residence, 1130 Penn Ford Lane, Independence, where friends may call at anytime. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, is in charge of arrangements.
