HOLCOMB
Mr. Truman Thomas Holcomb, 88, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, December 25, 2000, at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Holcomb was born in Lamar, Mo., June 10, 1912, to Thomas Sanford and Mary Huskinson Holcomb. Mr. Holcomb was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, a life member of the Winston-Salem Elks Lodge and a member of the Contract Bridge League, where he attained the rank of master. He was also a member of Salem Lodge No. 289 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons in Winston-Salem. Mr. Holcomb was preceded in death by his loving wife Ruth Craver Holcomb in 1976, and his son Truman T. "Pete" Holcomb. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil B. Holcomb and Weldon E. "Gene" Holcomb. Survivors include grandchildren Thomas B. Holcomb of New Bern, Ann H. Jewell of Winston-Salem and Stephen C. Holcomb of Winston-Salem; great-grandchildren Katie and Tyler Jewell of Winston-Salem, and Janelle and Peter Holcomb of New Bern; great-great-grandchild Nova Rose Rivera of New Bern; and daughter-in-law Jean B. Holcomb of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Henry Stokes at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with burial to follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday. HUDGENS
GREENSBORO -- Mr. Charles Edward Hudgens of 3 Bent Oak Court died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital. Charles was educated in the public schools of Winston-Salem. He was a graduate of A&T University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He used his financial background in the Greensboro post office working in data processing from which he retired in 1985 after 35 years of service. He received several Postal Service commendations of his job performance. He served in World War II in the position of corporal (surveyor) form which he received an honorable discharge, the World War II Victory Campaign Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and one Service Strip and the Good Conduct Medal. He was an avid golfer, a game he thoroughly enjoyed on and off the course. He won many trophies which he treasured. Charles was a member of St. James Baptist Church where he served as early morning service steward and sang with the Prince Graves Choir until ill health prevented. The funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at St. James Baptist Church, 536 W. Florida St. with the Rev. Vernon King, Pastor, officiating. Family visitation will be from 2 to 2:30. Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanne Ellis Hudgens of the home; daughter June Hudgens Lindsay (Robert) of Greensboro; son Charles Edward Hudgens Jr. (Sibyl) of Riverdale, Ga.; three stepsons, Cornell F. Ellis of Salt Lake City, Utah, Larry T. Ellis (Charisse) of Gainesville, Fla., and Michael B. Ellis (Berlinda) of Greensboro; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; cousins Jimmy Long (Maxine) and Charles Long of Winston-Salem, Daniel Miller of Pacolet, S.C., Mary Young (Plummer) of Spartanburg, S.C., and Helen and Eloise Clowney of Philadelphia; very special friends, Elise Miller (Calvin), Luther Dawkins (Gwendolyn), Percy Dominique (Janie), Vivian Perkins and Josephine Smith, all of Winston-Salem, Roy Johnson (Gladys) of Brown Summit and Sandra B. Motz of Phoenix; lifelong friends, Roy Durham (Irene) and Charles Springs (Tressie) of Winston-Salem; and other friends and golfing buddies. Funeral services are entrusted to Woodard Funeral Service.

HUNTER
Mr. James Melvin Hunter Sr., 89, a Winston-Salem area native and son of the late James Claude and Beulah Hunter died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. His vocational career included managing his father's lumber company, building contracting and real-estate brokerage. For 66 years, Melvin was the husband of Dorothy McKenzie Hunter, who survives of the home; and father of five surviving sons, J. Melvin Hunter Jr., E. Keith Hunter and Eric A. Hunter, all of the Winston-Salem area, Dr. William F. Hunter of Newport News, Va., and Dr. Barrett M. Hunter of Atlanta. Melvin leaves a Christian legacy, rooted in his lifelong active membership at Bethania Moravian Church. Other survivors include two brothers, Theodore Wesley Hunter of Winston-Salem and Carroll Hunter of Dubach, La.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bethania Moravian Church with the Rev. Charles Fishel and the Rev. John Kapp officiating. A graveside burial service will follow in the church graveyard. HUTCHINS
CLEMMONS -- Danny Lee Hutchins, 39, of Clemmons died at Forsyth Medical Center unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 25, 2000. A native of Forsyth County, he was born Feb. 27, 1961, to Dan Henry and Mary Fansler Hutchins. He was of the Baptist faith and a self-employed painter. Mr. Hutchins is survived by his mother, Mary F. Parrish of East Bend; his father, Dan H. Hutchins of Clemmons; three sisters, Kathy Tullock and husband Jerry of Tobaccoville, Sharon Franklin and husband Larry of Forbush and Donna Goins and husband Lee of Pinnacle; a brother, Gary Hutchins of Clemmons; and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Sue Hutchins, in 1959. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Parklawn Memorial Park in Winston-Salem with the Rev. Ottis Hurst officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 9 this evening at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel.

MASTEN
Mr. Guy Milton Masten Jr., 73, of 614 Oaklawn Ave. died in Winston-Salem on Dec. 26, 2000. He was born Oct. 14, 1927, to Dr. Guy M. Masten of Winston-Salem and Doris Wilson Masten of Montezuma, Ga. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and attended N.C. State University. He was employed by the Bahnson Co. for more than 35 years and was manager of International Operations when he retired for health reasons. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and Forsyth Country Club. He was married to the late Peggy Weiser Masten and is survived by a son, Dr. John W. Masten; a grandson, Matthew V. Masten; and a granddaughter-in-law, Meredith; all of Winston-Salem. The family will receive guests from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Centenary United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. McNIEL
KING -- Miss Debbie Sue McNiel, 47, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 5, 1953, in Forsyth County to Elbert McNiel Sr. and Mildred Hege McNiel. Surviving are her mother of King and a brother, Elbert F. McNiel Jr. and wife Susan of King. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Chapel.

MYERS
NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Lula Belle Rhodes Myers, the widow of Quincy Myers, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Fairplains Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hackworth officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Myers was born in Wilkes County to John and Maude Elledge Rhodes. She was a member of Fairplains Baptist Church. Mrs. Myers is survived by two daughters, Lougunda Parsons of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Ray (Melanie) Ferguson of Asheville; four sisters, Ila Bare, Lillie Brooks, Ethel Sebastian and Grace McNeil, all of North Wilkesboro; and a brother, Lloyd Rhodes of North Wilkesboro. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Wednesday night at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, North Wilkesboro. SHAVER
Mr. Robert Espie Shaver, 95, of 4713 Kernersville Road died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 22, 1905, in Iredell County to David and Mallie Victoria Wilborn Shaver. Mr. Shaver was a member of Glenn View Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Robbins Sunday School Class. Survivors include his wife, Mary Allen Shaver of the home; two daughters, Ruby Connatser and husband Glenn of Dillwyn, Va., and Kathryn Causby of Shelby; a stepson, W.E. Gwaltney and wife Fran of Powhatan, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna Cox; a brother, Norris Shaver; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Glenn View Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Coleman. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Powhatan Community cemetery in Powhatan, Va., by the Rev. Jim Lamb. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. TATUM
James William Tatum, 77, died Friday, Dec. 22, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 14, 1923, in Mount Airy, N.C. to Clarence Webb and Mae Sleight Tatum. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, Class of 1943 and attended Elon College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as an officer in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II and was a member of the Piedmont Masonic Lodge #711. Mr. Tatum had many interests and hobbies. He worked hard to restore and preserve commercial property in the West End of Winston-Salem winning the Award of Merit from the Winston-Salem Preservation Coalition for restoring the Fourth Street Townhouses located at the corner of Burke and Fourth Streets. He was a lifelong student of history, which led to his avid interest in genealogy. He operated several businesses in Winston-Salem including Tatum's Antiques, Salem Supply Co. and K&W Restaurant Supply Co. His last years were spent assisting his son at Brookstown Antiques. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Mary Ellington Tatum; three children, Mary Ellington Tatum, James Edgar (Eddie) Tatum (Victoria Hersh) and William (Bill) Franklin Tatum (Joan Howell); six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Angie Gordon and three brothers, John Tatum of Winston-Salem, Max Tatum of Walnut Cove and Al Tatum of Daytona Beach, Fla. A sister, Mary Robin Abrams of Deya, Spain preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Donald P. Goodheart and The Rev. John E. Shields officiating. Burial will be at Oakdale cemetery in Mount Airy. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Kidney Foundation of North Carolina, 5950 Fairview Road, Charlotte, NC 28208 and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4265 Brownsboro Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

TILLEY
WALNUT COVE -- Mr. John Junior Tilley, 71, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Stokes County to the late John E. and Bessie Mabe Tilley. He retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation with 35 years of service, and enjoyed visiting with people in the community. He was preceded in death in 1989 by his son, Jackie Tilley, and in 1990 by his wife, Mary Louise Mabe. Survivors include his daughter, Doris Ann Duncan and husband Gilmer; two sisters, Louise Mabe and husband Ray and Lillie Mae Mabe; two brothers, Carlos Tilley and wife Betty and Walter Tilley and wife Betty, all of Walnut Cove; three grandchildren, Ronald, Terry and Jerry; and three great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Shaun and Brandon. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Burroughs Funeral Home. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Thursday, Dec. 28, at Isom Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. The Rev. Chester Montgomery and the Rev. Ralph Mitchell will officiate. The family will be at the home of Mrs. Lillie Mae Mabe.

TIMBERLAKE
WALKERTOWN -- Mr. Andrew Timberlake, 90, formerly of 5425 Highway 311 N., died Dec. 24, 2000, at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation Center in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Oak Springs Baptist Church in Stokesdale with the Rev. J.R. Rudd officiating. Burial will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens, Winston-Salem. Mr. Timberlake was a native of Iowa and a member of Oak Springs Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a member of the Senior Choir. He was a member of Red Rock Masonic Lodge No. 809 and a retired custodian. He is survived by four sons, Isaiah Timberlake (Janet) of Winston-Salem, Charles Timberlake (Joyce) of Fort Worth, Texas, Harold Timberlake (Peggy) and John Timberlake of Walkertown; five daughters, Thelma Johnson and Carolyn White, both of Winston-Salem, Lois Scales, Faye Scales and Lorraine Jones (George), all of Walkertown; 37 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. Arrangements are by Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Madison.

WALTERS
STATE ROAD -- Mrs. Helen Kathryn (Dickerson) Walters, 79, of Highway 21 North passed away Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital in Texas. Mrs. Walters was born in Surry County on Jan. 18, 1921, to the late Kate Andrews and McKinley Dickerson. Mrs. Walters was a retired finance officer for 25 years for Elkin City Schools and was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Walters and a sister, Ruth Hanes. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Tony Woods of Lenoir and Carolyn and Opie White of Fort Worth, Texas; a brother, Bill Dickerson of Sandusky, Ohio; a sister, Pauline Logun of Sunrise, Fla.; four granddaughters and their spouses, Melissa and Craig Neidhart of Dallas, Stephanie White of Fort Worth, Pam and Harold Jones of Hickory, and Nicole and Jay Robertson of Hilton Head, S.C.; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John Attaway and the Rev. Scott Thomas. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Building Fund. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is in charge of the arrangements.

WILLIAMSON
ELKIN -- Mr. James Alvin Williamson, 80, of Chip Munk Lane died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Surry County Sept. 17, 1920, to the late D.C. Williamson and Bertha Tucker Williamson. Mr. Williamson was a member of the Salem Fork Christian Church, was a retired farmer and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Reba F. Williamson of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James K. Williamson and Carolyn B. Williamson and Curtis Williamson of Elkin; five grandchildren, Emily Williamson, Jesse Williamson, Seth Williamson, Eric Williamson and Josh Williamson; and four sisters, Nell Elliott, Edna Williamson, Martha Williamson and Annie Williamson all of Pfafftown. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Salem Fork Christian Church. Davis & Son Funeral Home in Dobson is in charge of Mr. Williamson's services.

WILLOUGHBY
Mr. Tryon Franklin Willoughby, known as "Tyrone" and "Pee Wee", 47, of 4132 Whitfield Road passed away Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native and resident of Winston-Salem, a member of Antioch Baptist Church and a graduate of Carver High School. He was preceded in passing by his mother, Elizabeth Jones Moss; a brother, Billy Ray Glenn; and his grandparents, Jim and Fannie Bradley Jones. He is survived by a very devoted sister, Barbara (Louis) Hines of the home; a brother, James Edward Jones of Wilson; three nephews, the Rev. Anthony L. Hines (Vickie), Eric Dwayne Hines of Winston-Salem and Scott Maurice Hines of South Bend, Ind.; special friends, Thelma Tindal, Mary Lou Russell and Billy Harrell; and other relatives and dear friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at the Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. J.L. Montgomery officiating. Interment will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. WOOSLEY
Mrs. Beatrice Saylor Woosley, 100, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at the Brookridge Retirement Community. She was born Feb. 27, 1900, in Yadkin County. Mrs. Woosley was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church and a member of the senior citizens group at the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Thomas Woosley. Surviving are four daughters, Cornelia W. Bailey and Wilma Jones (husband Phillip) of Clemmons, Helen W. Westerman (husband Frank) of Hampton, Va., and JoAnne W. Jarrett (husband Robert) of Wilmington; four granddaughters, Lisa Bailey, Carla Westerman, Rachel Schul and Joyce Boyle; three grandsons, Stephen P. Jones, John T. Jones and Ed Westerman; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, George S. Huffman (wife Ella Mae) of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Bowen officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the funeral home. AYERS
RURAL HALL -- Mrs. Ellen Pack Ayers, 72, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center following a long period of declining health. A native of Surry County, she was born Oct. 8, 1928, to the late Ralph and Princess Edwards Pack. Mrs. Ayers was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was a member of Woodland Baptist Church and was in the Faithful Followers Class. Mrs. Ayers was married to Merritt "C.B." Ayers on July 19, 1945, and had been married 55 years at the time of his death on Oct. 6, 2000. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Gladys A. Yale in May 1998; two sisters; and two brothers. Mrs. Ayers is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth A. Phillips and husband Billy of Winston-Salem and Peggy A. Higgins and husband Clyde of Winston-Salem; four sons, Johnny Ayers and wife Bonnie of Galax, Va., Lee Ayers and wife Ann of Quaker Gap, the Rev. Jay B. Ayers and wife Linda of Belize, Central America and Peter Joe Ayers and wife Lois of King; 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard Pack of Collinsville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel, with the Rev. Jay Ayers, the Rev. Johnny Ayers, the Rev. Tim Gammons and the Rev. R. Zeno Groce officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening (Thursday) at the funeral home. BESS
Mr. Charmer Lee Bess Jr., 28, was born June 8, 1972, the son of the late Charmer Lee Bess Sr. and Edith Jones Bess. He departed this life Monday morning, Dec. 25, 2000, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville following an extended illness. C.B. or Lil Charmer as family and friends called him attended the public schools in Forsyth County, having played football at Carver High School, graduated with the class of 1990 and attended WSSU. Growing up, he played football and baseball with the Pop Warner Leagues of Winston-Salem and Walkertown. During his early teenage years, Mr. Bess joined Goler Memorial AME Zion Church, having served on the junior usher board. Mr. Bess leaves to cherish his loving memory his loving mother, Edith Jones Bess of the home; a sister, Tamala Jones of Atlanta; a brother, Jamel Nance of the home; grandparents Viola Jones and Ruth Bess of Winston-Salem and Melvin Jones (Shirley) of Bridgeport, Conn.; four aunts, Shirley Agee (Robert) of Clemmons, Beverly Bess of Philadelphia, Wilhelmenia Lindsay (James) of Midway and Peggy Newell (Owen) of Winston-Salem; three uncles, Kenneth Bess of Charlotte, Arthur Jones (Kim) and Melvin Jones (Crystal) of Winston-Salem; and a host of cousins, great-aunts, great-uncles and friends. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Grace United Community Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joseph C. Parks officiating. BLYTHE
CHAPEL HILL -- Dr. William Brevard Blythe II, a professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina and longtime resident of Chapel Hill, died Dec. 21 at UNC Hospitals after a heart attack. He was 72. A native of Huntersville, Dr. Blythe was the son of author LeGette Blythe and Esther Farmer Blythe. He graduated from Huntersville High School at the age of 15, attended Oak Ridge military Academy for one year and then entered the University of North Carolina from which he graduated in 1948 at the age of 19. He attended the two-year program at UNC Medical School and earned his M.D. at Washington University in St. Louis in 1953. He returned to Chapel Hill and joined the medical school faculty in 1961, specializing in nephrology. During his more than three decades at the university, he served as director of the Clinical Research Unit, head of the Division of Nephrology and was instrumental in setting up dialysis units in previously neglected areas across the state. He received numerous honors, including the Thomas Jefferson Award for excellence in teaching, the Distinguished Faculty Award of the UNC Medical Alumni Association and the Outstanding Alumnus Award of the Washington University School of Medicine. His love for his community, his home state and the university was reflected by his involvement with the UNC Press, his participation in the University Presbyterian Church and his volunteer service to many groups, including the Carol Woods Retirement Center board of directors. A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at the University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill. The Rev. Bob Dunham officiated. Survivors include his wife, Gloria N. Blythe; sons Will Blythe of New York, David Blythe of Baltimore and John Blythe of Charlottesville, Va.; daughter Anne D. Blythe of Chapel Hill; brother Samuel L. Blythe of Winston-Salem; and sister Lovelace B. Pugh of Huntersville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Blythe Family Fund at the University of North Carolina, Brooks Hall, 476A, CB #6215, UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC 27599; the Medical Foundation of North Carolina, 880 Airport Road, CB #7565, UNC-CH; the Health Sciences Library, South Columbia Street, CB #7585, UNC-CH; or the N.C. Collection in Wilson Library, CB #3930, UNC-CH. Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill handled the arrangements.
