BREWER
NEWLAND -- Mr. Leonard Wilson Brewer, 90, of Hump Back Road died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at his residence. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late David Alfonzo and Phobie Cuthbertson Brewer, a charter member of Fletcher Presbyterian Church and a retired building contractor and farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Mae Potter Brewer. Survivors include his daughter, Mary Francis Gragg of Newland; a son, Gene Reglan of Boone; sisters Rachel Ford Leah Cole and Helen Phillips all of Newland; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Funeral services for Mr. Brewer will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29 at Newland Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. George Gunn and Dr. Monty Burnham officiating. Interment will follow in the Brewer cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. BURTON
Travis S. Burton died Dec. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center after a long illness. He was born Feb. 7, 1909, in Advance, Davie County. During World War II, he worked at the N.C. Ship Building Co. in Wilmington. In 1947 he returned to Winston-Salem, where he was a general contractor until retiring in 1979. He is survived by a son, William Y. Burton; a granddaughter, Alice Burton Barsony; and a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Barsony. A memorial service will be held in January. Memorials may be made to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 2575 Parkway Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

CARTER
MOCKSVILLE -- Mrs. Venita Ann Hosewick Carter, 51, of Claude Ratledge Road died Friday morning, Dec. 22, 2000, at Davis Hospital in Statesville after a sudden illness. Mrs. Carter was born in Norfolk, Va. April 13, 1949, to the late Sidney and Ann Hughes Hosewick and was a homemaker. She was an avid collector of Oriental and American Indian artifacts. She enjoyed wild animals and working in her flower gardens. Her favorite pastime was to spend quality time with her family especially her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Richard Paul Carter, whom she married Aug. 8, 1980; two daughters, Tammy Ann Strissel of Virginia Beach and Chrissy Farmer of Chesapeake, Va.; two granddaughters, Hailey and Ashley; two grandsons, Keith and Justin Lance; three sisters, Tina Felts, Nina Morris and Gina Felts all of Norfolk; and two brothers, Johnny Felts and Billy Felts both of Norfolk. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Eaton Funeral Chapel in Mocksville.

CHILDRESS
Mrs. Louise Douglas Childress of Winston-Salem died Wednesday morning, Dec. 27, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Childress was born June 6, 1914, in Forsyth County to Ira C. and Mary Davis Douglas. She received her law degree from John Marshall University and worked for the Veterans Administration in Atlanta before retiring to Winston-Salem in 1982. Surviving are a daughter, Judith L. Nolan and her husband Dr. Robert Nolan of Winston-Salem; a brother, Charles P. Douglas and wife Betty; and a niece, Ann Jacqueline Phillips all of Pensacola, Fla. A private graveside service will be held on Friday, Dec. 29, 2000. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. CONRAD
Mrs. Lucile Sprinkle Conrad, 96, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Springwood Care. She was born April 30, 1904, in Forsyth County to the late Benjamin Arthur and Maggie Speas Sprinkle. Mrs. Conrad was a member of Olivet Moravian Church, where she served as organist and pianist for several years. She taught piano in the public schools and at home for a number of years. Mrs. Conrad was a helpful neighbor and shared in her community. She was famous for her chicken pies. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Theodore Conrad, and two brothers, Gaylord and Speas Sprinkle. She is survived by a son, Gilbert A. Conrad of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Olivet Moravian Church, by the Rev. Douglas Rights. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. Memorials may be made to Olivet Moravian Church, 2205 Olivet Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. DAMERON
ELKIN -- Mrs. Etta Joyce Walker Dameron, 88, of Colonial Care Rest Home in Mount Airy, formerly of Elkin died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy after a short illness. She was born in Wilkes County Oct. 6, 1912, to the late Elder Wirt Walker and Nancy Elizabeth Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clarence Dameron; a sister, Eula Brinegar; and a brother, James Monroe "Jack" Walker. Mrs. Dameron was a homemaker and a member of the Cross Roads Primitive Baptist Church in Wilkes County. Surviving are a daughter, Betty Sue Dameron of Elkin; three sons and two daughters-in-law, James Dameron of Yadkinville, Garvey and Claudia Dameron of Pfafftown and Allan and Lydia Dameron of Holden Beach; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Della Wyatt of Sparta and Edna Ferguson of Westfield; and a brother, Vestal Walker of Hayes. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at the Davis & Sons Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Garden in Elkin. FARRELL
LILLINGTON -- Mr. Frank Wilson Farrell Sr., 91, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the Moravian Retirement Community in Salemtowne. He was a native of Chatham County the son of the late John T. and Mary Belle Wilson Farrell. He lived in the Lillington Community for over 50 years before he retired to the Winston-Salem area. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Lillington Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mark Morris and the Rev. Jeff Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Harnett Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife, Frances Sorrell Farrell of the home; a son, Dr. Frank W. Farrell and wife Patty of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Karen F. Burdett and husband Allan of Cornelius; grandchildren Molly Farrell of New York City, Tenley O'Neal of Winston-Salem and Megan Fidler of Charlotte; and great-grandchildren Jack, Peyton and Kathryn O'Neal. FURMAN
Mrs. Amy Henry Furman, 99, of 753 Blairmont Drive, Boone, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone. She was born April 12, 1901, in Wartburg, Morgan County, Tennessee, to the late Ben Jacob and Leona Pitts Henry. Mrs. Furman was a homemaker and an active member of First Baptist Church of Boone, having served as a former Sunday school and training union teacher. She was also a past leader of the women's missionary union and girls auxiliary. Survivors include three sons, Dr. Lowell B. Furman and wife, Faythe, James C. Furman and wife, Dolores, and Dr. Richard W. Furman and wife, Harriet, all of Boone; and a sister, Mrs. Lois Henry Crouch of Wartburg, Tenn. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Furman, four sisters and two brothers. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Boone. The body will lie in state at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Officiating will be Dr. Lamar King and the Rev. Franklin Graham. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens in Boone. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hampton Funeral Service in Boone. GARNER
KING -- Mr. Frank W. Garner, 80, Stokes County community leader, farmer and carpenter of Flynt Road passed away Christmas Day at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Stokes County, Sept. 5, 1920, the son of Boston W. and Rebekah Knight Garner. On July 22, 1944, he married Ona Ruth Boyles Garner of the home who survives; they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1994. He is survived by daughters Suzan Garner (Roy, Bradley, Victoria Myers and Randy Power) of King, Elena (Roy) Thomasson of Elkin and Potomac Falls, Va., and two granddaughters, Lynn and Holly Thomasson. Mr. Garner had three brothers, Thomas, Guy and Aaron and five sisters, Glida Spainhour, Deamie Voss, Edna File, Earsie Barber and Bertha Moore all of whom are deceased. A large, loving family of nieces, nephews and cousins survive him and will always remember his love for his family. A member of Masonic Lodge 722 of King and the Scottish Rite, he was also an enthusiastic leader in the Boy Scouts since the 1950s, serving as Scoutmaster in the Mount Olive-Capella and King communities. Over the years he took great pride in seeing his scouts grow into fine men. An active member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, he taught Sunday school class and had a perfect attendance record in Sunday school for over 47 years. He was active in the local Soil and Water Conservation District during the 1960s. He loved the Republican Party all his life. Mr. Garner graduated from King High School, spending his life as a farmer in the King community. An avid gardener, he took great pleasure in growing unique fruits and vegetables. He gave and received great joy through sharing them with his friends. He loved his farm; working on it gave him a feeling of being close to God's creations. Also a carpenter by profession, Mr. Garner was happiest doing the Lord's work. He always went out of his way to help anyone in the community in his quiet unassuming way. He put his love in action for his neighbors, helping many people along the way. His love, energy, determination and commitment to his community won him wide respect and countless friends. An article in the Winston- Salem Journal three years ago recognized Mr. Garner's crew of active senior citizens who performed carpentry work in the community. His co-workers recalled that he began each day on the job with a prayer. The body will lie in state from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Mount Olive Baptist Church followed by a memorial service in thanksgiving for his life. The Garner family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after a Masonic graveside service. Memorials may be made to the Frank Garner Memorial Fund at Mount Olive Baptist Church or the charity of the donor's choice.

HAMPTON
Mrs. Margaret Baynes Hampton, 77, of 2338 Silas Creek Parkway died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at her home. Mrs. Hampton, the daughter of the late John and Bessie Baynes, was born Jan. 6, 1923. After her parents' deaths, she was raised by Claude and Gertrude Baynes. She lived all of her life in Forsyth County and was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school to the children. For many years, she assisted her daughter in the restaurant business at T.J.'s Deli. Mrs. Hampton was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack A. Baynes, and a sister, Hazel Baynes Wall. She is survived by her husband, Howard A. Hampton of the home; her daughter, Pamela Mareigh Hampton, and her son, Sterling Adrian Hampton, both of Winston-Salem; her sister, Lillian Baynes Smith; her brother, Harvey F. Baynes; her granddaughter, Whitney Adrian Hampton; her grandson, Tyler Adrian Spaargaren; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. The funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. William "Bill" R. Garrard Jr. and the Rev. David Beaty officiating. HULL
WILMINGTON -- Mr. Billy Wayne Hull, 60, died Friday, Dec. 22, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. He was born April 1, 1940, in Winston-Salem, the son of Willie and Mary James Hull, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Wayne Hull. Surviving are his former wife, Janet Yokeley Hull Brown; a son, William Curtis Hull and wife Janet; daughter Lori Ann Hull, granddaughter Lauren Hull and stepgranddaughter Erica Reece all of Wallburg; and sisters Barbara Smith and husband Jack of Melborne, Fla., and Wanda Melton and husband Bill of Asheville. His family in Wilmington includes Frances Handy, Lynn Bollinger and husband Keith, Lisa Costin and husband Greg, Donna Misednhiemer, Darrell Handy, Tony Hardison and wife April; seven grandchildren; and devoted friends, Tammy and Keith Gould of Leland. Memorial service plans are incomplete. The family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

MASTEN
Mr. Guy Milton Masten Jr., 73, of 614 Oaklawn Ave. died in Winston-Salem on Dec. 26, 2000. He was born Oct. 14, 1927, to Dr. Guy M. Masten of Winston-Salem and Doris Wilson Masten of Montezuma, Ga. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and attended N.C. State University. He was employed by the Bahnson Co. for more than 35 years and was manager of International Operations when he retired for health reasons. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and Forsyth Country Club. He was married to the late Peggy Weiser Masten and is survived by a son, Dr. John W. Masten; a grandson, Matthew V. Masten; and a granddaughter-in-law, Meredith; all of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Centenary United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, Nc 27101 or the donor's choice of a charity. ROSE
DAVY, W.Va. -- Sarah Hopkins Rose, 89, of Big Bend died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Welch Community Hospital in Welch, W.Va. Born Dec. 11, 1911, in Hemphill, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Jackson Cleveland Mullins and Emma Damron Mullins. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, the Rev. William Daniel Hopkins in 1952; her second husband, the Rev. John Rose in 1995; a daughter, Norma Hamilton in 1990; six brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Francis) Hensley of Davy, with whom she made her home, Mrs. Cecil (Nancy) Gibson of Howell, Mich., and Mrs. Woodrow (Donnie) Phibbs of Clemmons; a brother, Waldon Mullins of Godby Heights, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Friday, Dec. 29 at the Douglas Mortuary Chapel in Welch, with Brothers Sammy Lester and Doug Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell, W.Va. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Douglas Mortuary, Welch, is in charge of arrangements.

SHAW
The Rev. Lois Paulette Stavely Shaw died Dec. 20, 2000, at her home in High Point. Pastor Shaw was born in Garden City, Mich. Sept. 25, 1945, and was the third of five children born to Viola Frances Potts Stavely and the late Leon Roby Stavely. For a number of years she worked as a paralegal and executive legal secretary. In 1985, she graduated Suma Cum Laude with an associate of science degree in management from Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tenn. In 1989, she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in management from Tusculum College in nearby Greenville, Tenn. In the summer of 1990 she began seminary at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C. In the spring of 1994 she was approved for ordination and graduated from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary with a master's of divinity. While awaiting a call to a congregation, she joined the faculty and staff of Mitchell Community College in Statesville and supply preached for congregations in the NC Synod of the ELCA. In September of 1997, she received a formal letter of call from St. Michael Lutheran Church in High Point. She was ordained at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Morristown on Oct. 24, 1997, by the Rev. Leonard Bolick, Bishop of NC Synod of the ELCA. She served as pastor of St. Michael Lutheran Church from September 1997 to December of 1999. Her husband, the Rev. C. Pierson Shaw Jr., pastor of Christ Lutheran Church of Winston-Salem, survives her along with her mother, Viola Dieke; a sister, Inez Klein; two brothers, Rick and Mike Stavely; two sons, Jonny Lee Wendell and Stephen Michael; and a daughter, Paulette Frances Wendell. Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winston-Salem. A Rite of Interment will be held later that same afternoon at 4 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs. The presiding minister for the services will be the Rev. Leonard Bolick, Bishop of NC Synod of the ELCA. The family earnestly requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3205 S. Main St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127; Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262; or the American Cancer Society, 1900 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

TYNER
Theodore Roosevelt Tyner of 4096 Pine Hall Road, Walkertown left this life to spend eternal life with God on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Tyner was born Feb. 9, 1938, Forsyth County to the late James Lewis Tyner Sr. and Mrs. Mary Letha Peake Tyner. Mr. Tyner attended Carver High School graduating in 1958, was a retired employed of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with more then 30 years of service and of the Baptist faith. Those left to cherish his memory are a sister, Nancy A. Tyner of Walkertown; four brothers, James (Barbara Welch) Tyner Jr. of Walnut Cove, Roger L. (Betty Allen) Tyner of Walkertown, Wade L. Tyner of Columbus, Ohio and Howard O. (Juanita Lilly) Tyner of High Point; an uncle, James O. (Rosa Miller) Peake of Greensboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at the Frances S. & Jerry Gilmore Memorial Chapel with the Rev. E.N. Young officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends fro 3:30 to 4 p.m. at the chapel. VAN DUSER
Mr. Peter Durk Van Duser, 65, of Clemmons died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born March 2, 1935, in Buffalo, N.Y. to the late Charles E. and Edna Durk Van Duser. Mr. Van Duser graduated from the University of New York. He was the director of dining and cabin services with Piedmont Airlines from 1974 to 1989 and then with US Airways until retirement. Mr. Van Duser was very active in his community and was president of the N.C. Bluebird Society. He is survived by his wife, Rita Cawley Van Duser of the home; three sons, Charles E. Van Duser III of Kansas City, Mo., John D. Van Duser and wife Yvonne of Spangdahlem, Germany, and Andrew P. Van Duser of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Catherine E. Johnston and husband Eric of King; a stepson, Craig A. Fishel and wife Amy of Winston-Salem; a stepdaughter, Jennifer N. Fishel of Wilmington; granddaughters Elise Johnston of King, Abby Van Duser and Sara Van Duser of Spangdahlem; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles R. and Janet West of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. WARREN
Mr. Herbert Clark Warren, 71, of Winston-Salem, husband of Jessie Mae Calloway Warren, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Guilford County on March 5, 1929, to Major Lee Warren and Sue Alzy Lawson Warren of High Point. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was of the Holiness faith. He married Jessie Mae Calloway Warren on Sept. 23, 1953. He is survived by his wife of the home; five daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and John Siemers, Pamela and Leon Shull, Nancy James Wilkins and Rhonda Warren, all of Winston-Salem, and Jennie and Jimmy Steele of Southmont; his mother, Sue Alzy Warren of High Point; two brothers, Thomas Warren of High Point and Robert Warren of Greensboro; a sister, Nannie Mann of High Point; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at the Vogler's and Son's Main Street Chapel, with the Rev. John Arnold officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

AMOS
Mr. Roger Odell Amos, 52, of 5150 Camp Betty Hastings Road, Walkertown, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at his residence. He was born June 4, 1948, in Forsyth County. Mr. Amos was retiring from R.J. Reynolds after 33 years of service. He was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. Surviving are his parents Charles Roy Amos Jr. and Alice Stokes Amos of Walkertown; four daughters, Sonya Marshall of Walkertown, Brandee Jessup of Kernersville, Alecia Inman and husband Wayne of Walkertown, and Charity Amos of Kernersville; three sisters, Kathleen Oakley and husband Brice of Germantown, Wavlin Pinnix of Winston-Salem and Carolyn Spainhour of Walkertown; two grandchildren, Dillon "Buckie" Fosner and Gabrielle "Sissy" Jessup, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Rev. Steve Roberson will officiate. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown.
