PILOT MOUNTAIN -- Mrs. Claudia Ellen Walker Tucker, 81, 314 Hathaway Lane, Pilot Mountain, N.C. passed away Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at her home. Mrs. Tucker was born Dec. 29, 1918, in Surry County, to Robert William and Claudia Ellen Johnson Walker. Mrs. Tucker was a homemaker and a member of Simmons Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law, Lillie and Raymond Midkiff, Pilot Mountain, N.C., Agnes and Paul Midkiff, Pilot Mountain, N.C., Nancy and Jimmy Ashburn, Greensboro, N.C., Annie and Leroy Turney, Greensboro, N.C., Faye and Floyd Lowe, Mount Airy, N.C., Darlene and Dwight McMillian, Pilot Mountain, N.C.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Fannie Tucker, Mount Airy, N.C., Robert Tucker, Pilot Mountain, N.C. and Frank and Teresa Tucker, Pilot Mountain, N.C.; 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, James Walker, Kernersville, N.C.; and a daughter-in-law, Shirley Tucker, Mount Airy, N.C. Mrs. Tucker was preceded in death by her husband, Roosevelt Tucker, a son, Geder Tucker, a daughter, Lottie Chilton, three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services for Mrs. Tucker will be conducted Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Simmon's Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Jimmy Cain, Rev. Stewart Mauck and the Rev. Paul Key. Burial will follow at Jessup Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, and at other times at the Tucker residence. YARBROUGH
Mr. Fred Hall Yarbrough, 73, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 6, 1927, in Yadkin County to Henry Columbus and Lillie Mae Key Yarbrough. Mr. Yarbrough was retired from Hanes with 41 years of service. He was a member of Woodland Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Wade, Gurnie and Lloyd Yarbrough. Surviving is his wife, Betty Mozelle Murphy Yarbrough of the home; a daughter, Faye Norman and husband Ben of Charlotte; three sons, Roger Lee Yarbrough, Sr. and wife Bennie of Charlotte, Gary Yarbrough and wife Sharon of Mocksville, David Yarbrough and wife Penny of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a brother, Ford W. Yarbrough of Sunset Beach, N.C.; three sisters, Betty Lou Bennett of Mocksville, Margaret Reid of Winston-Salem, Mildred Pierce of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Brian L. Yarbrough of Walkertown, Roger L. Yarbrough Jr. of Charlotte, Jason Brent Yarbrough of Lexington, Brooks Yarbrough of Charlotte, Jeff Norman of Raleigh. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Woodland Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Gammons and the Rev. R. Zeno Groce officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. CROOKS
Virginia Marie Crooks, born Nov. 11, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., died Dec. 28, 2000, in Winston-Salem. She was the daughter of Hazel Kimball and Joseph Conety and the widow of John B. Crooks. She spent most of her life in Upstate New York. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Crooks, and son-in-law, Allin Cottrell of Winston-Salem; sons, Thomas J. Crooks of Albany, Ore., and Steven K. Crooks of Clyde, N.Y.; six grandchildren including Lily Cottrell of Winston-Salem; four great-grandchildren and a sister, Hazel Hunt of New Haven, Conn. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Nancy Crooks, 155 Crepe Myrtle Circle, Winston-Salem. Burial will be held in New York state at a later date.

FLEMING
YADKINVILLE -- Mr. Frank U. Fleming, 73, of 2016 Speer Bridge Road died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Fleming was born July 28, 1927, in Yadkin County to Paul Lewis and Evva Poindexter Fleming. He was a member of Forbush Baptist Church. Mr. Fleming was a longtime member of the Yadkin County Farm Bureau board of directors and the North Carolina Farm Bureau board of directors and vice chairman of the county planning board and a member of the land use board. Mr. Fleming was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a retired farmer. Mr. Fleming was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michaela Fleming. Surviving are his wife, Martha Poindexter Fleming of the home; two daughters, Nancy (Andy) Fleming-Evans of Freemont and Donna F. (Gary) McDonald of East Bend; a son, Peter (Terrie) Fleming of Yadkinville; a sister, Elise (Ernest) Pendry of Boonville; three brothers, C.L. (Izella) Fleming of Dobson, Ross (Zena) Fleming of East Bend and George (Betty) Fleming of Terrel; six grandchildren, Rachel and Courtney Evans, Megan and Laura McDonald and Mariah and Ian Fleming. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at the Forbush Baptist Church by the Rev. Kelly Porter and the Rev. Calvin Knight. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. GWYNN
Mrs. Lucille Mayberry Gwynn of 1805 Shadymount Ave. passed away Dec. 26, 2000. She was a native and lifelong resident of Winston-Salem and was longtime devoted member of Cleveland Avenue Christian Church. She attended local schools and graduated from Winston-Salem Teachers College (now Winston-Salem State University), received a master's degree in reading from Hofstra University in New York and retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools after 30 years of service. She was an ardent civic and community involved person, N.C. Retired School Personnel, Pfafftown Chapter of National Women of Achievement, A Better Idea Community Club and Atkins High School Classes of Thirties and others. Immediate family survivors include a son, Joseph Arthur Gwynn Jr. (Viola) of Detroit, Mich.; four grandchildren, Joelle, Jerrel, Justin Gwynn of Detroit, Mich., and Kirby L. Gwynn (Alicia); two great-grandchildren of Yadkinville; a niece, Mrs. Hope Mumford Workman (Charles) of Kernersville; a nephew, Bishop Mumford (Marinelle) of Norfolk, Va.; a devoted cousin, Mrs. Hazel Gaston of Winston-Salem; two brothers-in-law; other cousins, nieces, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, from the Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church. Pastor Sheldon McCarter will officiate and interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service hour at the church. HAYES
WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Carrie Brewer Whitsett Hayes of East Main Street, Wilkesboro died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2000. Mrs. Hayes was born to Carrie Elizabeth and Dr. William Thornton Whitsett in Whitsett. She was a graduate of Woman's College in Greensboro. Mrs. Hayes was an avid golfer and was a member of the Oakwoods Country Club and High Meadows Country Club. She was a member of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by her husband, Hadley Hayes. She is survived by a daughter, Susan Hayes Hamilton of Boston, Mass.; a sister, Lucille Holt of Burlington; two brothers, Gordon Whitsett of Whitsett, and W.T. Whitsett of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandchildren, Carrie Hamilton and Hayes Hamilton, both of New York City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church by the Rev. M. Kathryn Rackley. The family will receive at the Parish House after the service. HOOTS
Mrs. Nell Bernice Hoots, 72, of Johnson Ridge Road in Elkin passed away Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Hoots was born Dec. 28, 1928, in Wilkes County to James Lytle and Lorene Colvard Mastin. Mrs. Hoots was a retired nursing assistant from Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital and was a member of Oak Forest Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Mastin, and a sister, Bessie Ford. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary and Louise Hoots of Roaring River and David Hoots of Alabama; four daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and John Parks, Janice and Joe Ward, all of North Wilkesboro, Tina and Doug Couch of Elkin and Tracy and Chris Bauguess of Thurmond; a brother, Ford Mastin of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Blanche Johnson, Hazel Baldwin, Ethel Harris and Betty Williams, all of Roaring River; 10 grandchildren, Kelly and Ashley Hoots, Charles and Jeremy Clendenen, Matthew and Seth Ward, Andrew and Amber Couch, Stoney and Cole Bauguess; three great-grandchildren, Timmy and Faith Clendenen and Devin Couch. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Oak Forest Baptist Church by the Rev. Donnie Shumate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. MAGRUDER
Mr. Donald Gray Magruder, 80, passed away Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000. He was born May 10, 1920, to Joseph and Effie Reeves Magruder in Smith County, Va. Mr. Magruder was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Magruder was a retired carpenter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Dunford Magruder, and a brother, Thornton R. Magruder. Surviving are two sons, Donald Joseph Magruder (wife Cathy) of Arcadia and Randy Magruder of Ridgeway, Va.; three granddaughters, Beverly Everhart (husband Timothy) of Lexington, Kimberly Magruder of King and Maredith Peterson (Michael) of Jacksonville, Fla. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at the Welcome Church of God. The Rev. Alvin Everhart and the Rev. Bruce Hagy will be officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

PIERCE
William Eugene (Wil) Pierce III, 216 Natalie Lane in King, died Thursday morning at the Amos Cottage. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Voglers Main Street Chapel by the Rev. David Merritt. Wil was born Sept. 14, 1999 in Forsyth County to William Eugene (Billy) and Emily Andrews Pierce Jr. He was preceded in death by a sister, Victoria Noel Pierce, and his maternal great-grandfather, Leon Hersh. Surviving are his mother and father of the home; his paternal grandmother, Ursula Pierce; his paternal grandfather, William E. Pierce Sr. and wife, Jeannie; maternal grandmother, Victoria Tatum and husband, Eddie; maternal grandfather, Hamlin Andrews and wife, Wendy; maternal great-grandmothers, Elizabeth Hersh and Margaret Andrews; aunts and uncles, Mike and Michelle Sigmon, Michael and Donna Grieff, Warren and Melinda Simms, Donald and Dawn Simms, Sammye and Barry Sigmann , Katie Andrews, Corey Andrews and Amanda Tatum and a number of nieces and nephews. The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Susan Hunsinger, Dr. Tamison Jewett, Dr. Joseph Muenser, Dr. Kurt Klinepeter and the staff of Amos Cottage and to UNC Hospital PICU Unit C Staff. Mrs. Ruth Flippen Rogers, 82, formerly of the Asbury community, widow of Mr. R. Folger Rogers, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 27, 2000, at Oak Summit Nursing Center in Winston-Salem. She was born in Patrick County Sept. 1, 1918, to the late Andrew Melvin (Coney) and Mary Lilla Collins Flippen and was a member of Asbury Presbyterian Church. Survivors include A.J. and Margie Rogers of Rural Hall, Ervin and Wilma Rogers of King, Jimmy and Kay Rogers of Pilot Mountain, Cathy R. Hufstader of El Paso, Texas, Susie and Tom Pearson of Pfafftown, Douglas and Judy Rogers of Mount Airy; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a step-grandson; a sister, Ruby Worley, of Chesterfield, Va., and three sisters-in-law, Ethel Flippen of Pulaski, Va., Claudia Flippen of Westfield and Clara Flippen of Stuart, Va. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Asbury Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert Button and the Rev. Stewart Mauck officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy where she will remain until time to be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service. RUCKER
Funeral services for Raymond Rucker will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Mocksville. Services will be held at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church in Mocksville and burial will follow in National cemetery in Salisbury. Family visitation, 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. SPRINKLE
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Mrs. Grace M. Sprinkle, 88, of Eggleston Avenue, Orlando, Fla., died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000. She was a homemaker. She was born in Winston-Salem on Dec. 22, 1912, and she moved to central Florida in 1990. She was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by three daughters, Peggy Schindel of Lady Lake, Fla., Barbara Wayne of Deltona, Fla., and Kay Eyermann of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; a brother, Russell Tise of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. Family Funeral Care in Oviedo, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

WARD
MOCKSVILLE -- Opal Louise Foster Ward, 87, of Foster Dairy Road, passed away Dec. 29, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Dec. 7, 1913, the oldest daughter of Robert Lee and Mozelle Tucker Foster. She was married to Owen Franklin Ward on Dec 24, 1940, and resided in Davie County all of her life. She was a member of Smith Grove Methodist Church. Mrs. Ward worked for several years at the Hanes Distribution Plant in Bixby, but spent most of her time as a homemaker caring for her family. She loved to cook and sew and work on crafts when she was able, and she enjoyed collecting porcelain dolls. She was preceded in death by her husband, a granddaughter, Teresa Robertson Myers, a great-granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Engle, and her brothers, Robert and Johnny Foster. She left behind to cherish her memory her children, Gene Ward and wife, Nancy, Linda W. Adams and husband, Alford, Kelly Ward and Martha W. Edwards; seven grandchildren, Melissa Richardson, Daniel Ward, Susan W. Correll and husband, Lewis, Samantha Ward, Julie Adams and Joshua Phipps, all of Mocksville, and Matthew Ward of Florida; four great-grandchildren and four sisters, Laura Smith, Ann Johnson and Betty Wood of Mocksville and Hallie Lawson of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Davie Funeral Service. The funeral service will held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Smith Grove Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. WESTMORELAND
Mr. Tucker Benbow Westmoreland, 90, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Westmoreland was born Jan. 13, 1910, in Forsyth County, a son of the late Moses Martin and Cynthia Elizabeth Morris Westmoreland. He was a member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church and a farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Virginia Holder Westmoreland, sisters Blanche and Carolyn Westmoreland, and a brother, William Westmoreland. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Larry Whicker of Winston-Salem; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Karen Westmoreland of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Darrell Westmoreland and wife, Stephanie, and Ladd Whicker and wife, Amy; two granddaughters, Betsy Whicker and Marinda Lane and husband, Bundy; three great-grandsons, Landon Whicker, Tucker Lane and Daniel Westmoreland. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Reece Cook and the Rev. Brian Crady. WILLIAMSON
Annie Bell Williamson, 68, of Pfafftown, died Dec. 26, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Surry County April 27, 1932, to the late Cleve and Berta T. Williamson. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Alvin Williamson. Surviving are three sisters, Nell Elliott, Edna Williamson and Martha Williamson, all of Pfafftown; five nieces and nephews and six great-nieces and great-nephews. The family will receive friends at Vogler Funeral Home on Reynolda Road from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30 at Pfafftown Christian Church with Dr. Tom Everton and Dr. Willie Davis officiating. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at Salem Fork Christian Church. Annie will be greatly missed by her family, her quilting friends and many friends in the church and community. BARKER
Mrs. Ella Taylor Barker, 89, of 246 Dumont Drive died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Barker was born May 14, 1911, in Henry County, Va., a daughter of the late William T. "Bud" and Florence Overton Taylor. She was a homemaker and a member of Parkview Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Barker Sr. Surviving are her son, William H. Barker Jr. of Kernersville; a brother, Clay Taylor of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Elma Kent of Danville, Va.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Parkview Church of God by the Rev. Bobby Dishman. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville, Va. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funral Home in Kernersville.

KERNERSVILLE -- Mr. Billie Gray Blakley, 74, of 208 Smith St . died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Blakley was born Oct. 17, 1926, in Forsyth County, a son of the late James William and Iva Ellis Blakley. He was a member of Main Street Baptist Church and was retired from Modern Machine Co. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Marceline Perdue Blakley of the home; a son, Kerry Gray and wife, Therese Blakley, of Hubert; three daughters, Bettina and husband, Terry Howard, of Winston-Salem, Michelle and husband, William Dobson, and Robin and husband, Bert Shipley, of Kernersville; a sister, Mattie James of Reidsville; three brothers, Grady Blakley of Troy, Carlos Blakley of Lexington, and Sammy Blakley of Reidsville; stepmother, Gladys Blakley of Reidsville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel by the Rev. Mike Willard. Burial will follow at Eastlawn. BREWER
Mr. Edward Eugene Brewer Sr., 66, of Advance died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at his home. He was born Sept. 4, 1934, in Davie County to William McKinley and Ethel Carter Brewer. Mr. Brewer had retired from Sara Lee and was employed by Bermuda Village and was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. He was a faithful, loving servant of God, and a Carolina fan since 1944. Mr. Brewer was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Norma Nelson, and a brother, Ray Brewer. Survivors are his wife of 45 years, Mrs. Clarice Tesh Brewer of the home; two sons, Edward (Eddie) Eugene Brewer Jr. and wife, Bonnie, of Lexington, and Anthony Ray Brewer of Mocksville; a daughter, Penelope Jane Dunn and husband, Theodore, of Carrollton, Ky.; three grandchildren, Crystal Hall, Edward Lapish and Ashley Brewer; a great-grandchild, Justin Hall; a sister, Louise English of Wallace; and two brothers, Winfield Brewer of Burgaw, and Bobby Brewer of Fayetteville. Entombment will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum of Clemmons. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
