COLLINS
INDEPENDENCE, Va. -- Coy Wayne Collins, 75, of Sparta passed away Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born April 1, 1925, in Independence to Coy Mack and Nannie Black Collins, he was a retired building contractor. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Ray Faircloth and daughter, Dee, Billie Jean and Keith McDaniel and two sons, Timmy and Danny Joe, and Dreama and Tim Wood and three sons, Lee, Luke and Brian, all of Winston-Salem; two sons and daughters-in-law, Coy Mack and Ann Collins and daughter, Jennifer, and son, Richard, of Winston-Salem, and Robert Franklin and Mary Collins and four daughters, Meredith, Bobbie Diane, Melinda and Kim, and son, Steve, of Rocky Mount; four sisters, Nannie Blevins of Emoryville, Pa., Edna Beaver of Wilmington, Del., Ellen Tickle and Bina Manuel, both of Wytheville, Va.; a brother, Frank Collins of Winston-Salem; and a sister-in-law, Kathleen Collins of Atlanta, Ga. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence with interment in Cox's Chapel cemetery. The Rev. Fred E. Jennings will officiate. The family will receive friends an hour before the funeral service Monday. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence is in charge of arrangements.

CROOKS
Virginia Marie Crooks, born Nov. 11, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., died Dec. 28, 2000, in Winston-Salem. She was the daughter of Hazel Kimball and Joseph Conety and the widow of John B. Crooks. She spent most of her life in Upstate New York. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Crooks, and son-in-law, Allin Cottrell of Winston-Salem; sons, Thomas J. Crooks of Albany, Ore., and Steven K. Crooks of Clyde, N.Y.; six grandchildren including Lily Cottrell of Winston-Salem; four great-grandchildren and a sister, Hazel Hunt of New Haven, Conn. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Nancy Crooks, 155 Crepe Myrtle Circle, Winston-Salem. Burial will be held in New York state at a later date.

FERGUSON
Mr. Charlie Watson Ferguson, 89, of Overhill Drive, Ferguson, died Thursday, Dec. 28 at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Ferguson was born Sept. 16, 1911, in Wilkes County to Chapman Harvey and Nora Watson Ferguson. He was a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Ferguson was a retired farmer. Surviving are a two sons, Charles Jerry Ferguson, PSL, of Ferguson and Martin Harvey Ferguson of the home; six daughters, Vivian Rose Ferguson Rhodes of Wilkesboro, Mary Judy Ferguson Wright of Zionville, Nora Ann Gregory of Millers Creek, Dr. Susan Barefoot of Liberty, S.C., Joan Ferguson Johnson of Bethlehem, Margaret Frances Ferguson of the home; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31 at Beaver Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Hadley Triplette officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Mission of Beaver Creek Baptist Church, P.O. Box 26, Ferguson, NC 28624. Miller Funeral Service of North Wilkesboro is in charge of arrangements.

FERGUSON
Ms. Mary Annette Ferguson, 36, of 722 Cassell Street, passed away Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at her residence. She was a native and lifelong resident of Winston-Salem. She was born Dec. 25, 1962, the daughter of the late Delois F. Mosley and Willie Mosley. She is survived by six children, Irvin, Tarus, Kimberly Ferguson-Martin, De'Lonnee, Shanta and Michelin Ferguson, all of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; a sister, Vatura Ferguson-Mosley; an aunt, Clara Ferguson; a special friend, Elester Smith and other relatives and friends. Memorial services were held 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the Forsyth Medical Center Chapel with Dr. Paul A. Lowe Jr presiding. (Russell)

FLEMING
YADKINVILLE -- Mr. Frank U. Fleming, 73, of 2016 Speer Bridge Road died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Fleming was born July 28, 1927, in Yadkin County to Paul Lewis and Evva Poindexter Fleming. He was a member of Forbush Baptist Church. Mr. Fleming was a longtime member of the Yadkin County Farm Bureau Board of Directors and the North Carolina Farm Bureau Board of Directors and vice chairman of the County Planning Board and a member of the Land Use Board. Mr. Fleming was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a retired farmer. Mr. Fleming was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michaela Fleming. Surviving are his wife, Martha Poindexter Fleming of the home; two daughters, Nancy (Andy) Fleming-Evans of Fremont and Donna F. (Gary) McDonald of East Bend; a son, Peter (Terrie) Fleming of Yadkinville; a sister, Elise (Ernest) Pendry of Boonville; three brothers, C.L. (Izella) Fleming of Dobson, Ross (Zena) Fleming of East Bend and George (Betty) Fleming of Terrel; six grandchildren, Rachel and Courtney Evans, Megan and Laura McDonald and Mariah and Ian Fleming. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at the Forbush Baptist Church by the Rev. Kelly Porter and the Rev. Calvin Knight. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. GOUGH
YADKINVILLE -- On Dec. 30, 2000, our family lost a devoted and loving husband, father, paw paw, son, brother and friend, Robert H. Gough Jr. He was friends with and loved by so many people, and he will be missed. Robert worked at Microfibers in Winston-Salem for 13 years after the closing of AT&T. He was born Nov. 8, 1950, to Exie Plowman Gough and Robert Gough. He left behind a loving and devoted wife, Linda Thomas Gough of the home; a son, Robbie (Sandy) Gough and a grandson, Nathan Gough, all of Yadkinville; a daughter, Gretta Gough (Marvin) Adams of Yakdinville; his mother, Exie Plowman Gough, and a loyal friend, Don Baity of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Kathleen (Vernon) Dixon and Jeanette (Doug) Holt, all of Yadkinville; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Gough was preceded in death by his father, Robert "Rob" Gough. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Timothy Jones. Burial will follow in the Turner's Creek Baptist Church cemetery. GRIFFIN
Miss Emma Foust Griffin, 89, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Salemtowne/The Moravian Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. She was born May 18, 1911, in Greensboro, the daughter of the late James Lanier and Ethel Foust Griffin. Miss Griffin attended Sweet Briar College. At one time she was children's librarian for the city of Greensboro and was director of religious education for Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro. She also worked with young people at Saint Francis Episcopal Church and Saint Andrews Episcopal Church and was manager of the college bookstore of Greensboro College when she retired in 1972. After her retirement she moved to her home atop Mabry Mountain in Meadows of Dan, Va., where she enjoyed sharing her mountain retreat with friends and relatives until ill health forced her to move to Salemtowne in 1998. Survivors include a niece, Elsa Griffin Ayers of Greensboro; a nephew, James L. Griffin III of Greenville, S.C., and five grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Miss Griffin was predeceased by her brother, James L. Griffin Jr. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Salem cemetery in Winston-Salem by the Rev. Peter Robinson. HODGES
Mr. Dennis Vernon Hodges, 47, of Old Town Drive, Winston-Salem died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, unexpectedly. Dennis was born in Forsyth County on Dec. 28, 1953, to the late Vernon Odell Hodges and Muriel Blevins Hodges. He was a self-employed carpenter, he attended Dobson First Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sharon Gates Hodges of the home; a step daughter, Taryn Mabe of the home; his mother, Muriel B. Hodges of Winston-Salem; two aunts and three uncles, Mary Nance Tuttle and Ronald Tuttle of Winston-Salem, Barbara B. Steele and Windell Steele of Dobson and Chester B. Blevins of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Dobson First Baptist Church with burial in the Riggans family cemetery. His body will remain at Davis & Sons Funeral Home in Dobson until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the services. Dr. Van Lankford will be conducting the services. The family will receive friends at Davis & Sons Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m Sunday. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Dobson First Baptist Church, c/o Gene Everette, P.O. JOHNSON
Mrs. Mildred Campbell Johnson, 87, of Advance died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 13, 1913, in Chesterfield, S.C., to John T. and Mary Gaddy Campbell. She was retired from Western Electric Co. and was a member of Green Meadows Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Walter Johnson Jr., and two sons. Surviving are a daughter, Julie J. Bechtel of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday at Vogler and Sons Clemmons Chapel by the Rev. Ray Davis. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Voglers.

JOHNSON
Willie A. Johnson, affectionately known as "Bro," of 990 Second St., #B, was born July 13, 1922, in Greenville, S.C. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army, a resident of Winston-Salem for most of his life and a retiree of J.G. Messick and Son, Inc. Mr. Johnson was of the Holiness faith. Surviving are his wife of the home, Viola Johnson; two sons, Willie A. (Bessie) Johnson Jr. and Elder Michael Johnson, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters, including Freddie Davis of Greenville, S.C.; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2001, from the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home. The Rev. J.R. Samuels will officiate, and interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service hour from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. (Hooper)

LUTHER
Mrs. Clara Hazelwood Luther, 73, of 1990 Doss Road, Danbury, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at her home. She was born May 10, 1927, in Stokes County to Hiram T. Hazelwood and Dorsey Wagoner Hazelwood. She was retired from Macfield of Madison. She was a member of Victory Ministries Church. Her first husband, Major Corns, and her second husband, William Frank Luther, preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Ruth) Rodgers, of Lawsonville; a step daughter, Mrs. Lloyd (Fae) Martin, of Lawsonville; sons, Billy (Lil) Corns, of Madison, David Corns, of Ridgeway, Va., Clyde Corns, of Danbury and fiance, Tina Heath, of Walnut Cove; sisters, Ruby Myers, of High Point and Shirley Jones, of Archdale; a brother, Herbert Hazelwood, of Trinity; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Peters Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Payne, the Rev. Jack Anderson and the Rev. Mark Norris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home and other times at the home.

MABE
PILOT MOUNTAIN -- Mrs. Hallie Jane Simmons Mabe, 96, the widow of Joel M. Mabe of 506 Dobson Mill Road, Pilot Mountain passed away Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Surry Community Nursing Center in Mount Airy. Mrs. Mabe was born in Surry County on Jan. 17, 1904, to Robert Lee and Mary Hunter Simmons. She graduated from Pilot Mountain High School. She attended Guilford College and taught public school for a number of years. She later worked at Amos and Smith from which she retired. She was a member of Pilot Mountain Friends Meeting. In her retirement years she was an active volunteer for senior and civic activities devoting more than 20 years of service to work with senior citizens and the Pilot Mountain Civic Center. In 1997, she was honored by the town of Pilot Mountain for her 20 years of service. The Pilot Mountain Women's Club honored her as "Citizen of the Year" for 1997-1998. She was also honored by a proclamation by the Surry commissioners in 1999 for her dedication and volunteer service to seniors and the Pilot Mountain Civic Center. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William Mabe, an attorney in Atlanta, Ga., and wife, Gale, and Dr. Alan R. Mabe, who is an administrator at Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., and wife, Molly; three grandchildren, William F. Mabe Jr. of New Brunswick, N.J., John R. Mabe of Miami, Fla., and Allison Mabe Vann of Washington, D.C.; and a great-grandchild, Jackson Vann of Washington, D.C. Mrs. Mabe was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph D. and James L. Mabe. Funeral services for Mrs. Mabe will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Pilot Mountain Friends Meeting by the Rev. Wayne Johnson. Interment will follow in the Pilot Mountain City cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home and other times at Mrs. Mabe's home, 506 Dobson Mill Road, Pilot Mountain. Memorials may be made to the Pilot Mountain Civic and Recreation Center, P.O. Box 1250, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041. The Mabe family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain .

McGEE
KERNERSVILLE -- Mr. Raymond Charlie McGee, 84, of 7592 Watkins Ford Road, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Britthaven of Kernersville. Mr. McGee was born June 18, 1916, in Forsyth County, a son of the late Charlie and Deffy Crews McGee. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Kernersville and a retired farmer. Surviving are his wife, Ella Eaton McGee of the home; three sons, Raymond Eugene McGee and Robert Melvin McGee of Kernersville and Charles Calvin McGee of Pfafftown; two sisters, Mildred Ballard of Kernersville and Margaret Smith of Walnut Cove; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Sam Murphy. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Mrs. Ella McGee, 7592 Watkins Ford Road.

MELTON
ADVANCE -- Mr. Troy Wesley "Chalk" Melton, 73, of Baltimore Road died late Friday night at Forsyth Medical Center after a short illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Eaton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Alton Beal officiating. Burial will be in the Bixby Church of the Living God cemetery. The family requests that memorials be considered for the American Cancer Society, 1000 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Mr. Melton was born in Davie County, June 6, 1027, to the late Richard and Eunice Sears Melton and was retired from Heritage Furniture Co. He was a member of Bixby Presbyterian Church. Mr. Melton was a member of the Mocksville Moose Lodge, a member of the Samuel C. Hart American Legion Post 29, Salisbury and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was considered the best Texas wedge player in Davie County and surrounding areas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Beal Melton in 1996. Surviving is his daughter, Mrs. Paul (Gale) Barney of Advance; two sons and daughters-in-law, Maxie and Vickie Melton and Tony and Libby Melton, all of Advance; three grandsons, Wesley Melton, Travis Melton and Daniel Melton; four sisters, Kate Barney of Clemmons, Nancy Wright of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Louise West of Advance and Maude Harris of Mocksville; two brothers, Richard Melton Jr. of Winston-Salem and Harold Melton of Advance; and a special companion, Zelma Pauline Stanley of Advance. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and at other times at the home of his sister, Mrs. Louise West on Baltimore Road, Advance.

NELSON
Mr. Quentin George Nelson, 82, died Dec. 29, 2000, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. He was the loving husband of Mildred W. Nelson to whom he had been married for 56 years. He is survived by his wife; a sister, Delores Smith of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Kevin Nelson of Tobaccoville and Randy Nelson of Rural Hall; a great-grandson, Travis Nelson of Pfafftown; a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Winston-Salem. Interment will be at Colfax Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church for an hour before the service. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem for the care and concern shown to Mr. Nelson. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

OWENS
Mr. James H. "Jim" Owens, 55, of Advance passed away Dec. 30, 2000, at his home. He was born Aug. 31, 1945, in Madison County to Annie Wilson and James Garfield Owens. Mr. Owens was a faithful member of the Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church where for several years he was a Sunday school teacher and a deacon who loved and cared for people. He was retired from Ingersoll Rand after 24 years of service and was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Advance Post #8719. Mr. Owens was formerly a law-enforcement officer in Davie County. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors are his wife of 31 years, Mrs. Alvia Layell Owens of the home; two daughters, Jamie Hendrix (husband, Vernon) of Advance, and April Tomberlin (husband, Brent) of Mocksville; two grandchildren, Hunter Elizabeth and Jake Hendrix, both of Advance; a sister, Jane Smith (husband, Virgil) of Mocksville; a brother, David Owens (wife, Sheila) of Mocksville; a half sister, Marie Riddle of Advance; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Joel K. Boyles and Mr. Tim Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. ROCK
SALISBURY -- Mrs. Ann Carter Rock of Salisbury died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro after an illness of 10 days. She was born in High Point to the late Mary Johnson Carter and John Thomas Carter. She was a graduate of High Point College with a degree in early childhood training from Catawba College. She taught school at Rockwell Elementary School for 26 years. She was a member of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church. Surviving are a son, John Maydian of Greensboro; two daughters, Paula Maydian Dent of Advance, and Jane Maydian of Greensboro; a sister, Johnnie Gray of Lexington; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Stephen B. Morris officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Summersett Funeral Home. After the service the family will be at the home of Mrs. Katherine Murdock, 229 W. Bank St., Salisbury. SINK
Mr. Thomas Lake Sink, 88, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000. He was born to Thomas Arthur Sink and Lula Livengood Sink on June 8, 1912, in Midway, Davidson County. During the past 62 years, Lake and his wife, Mae Elizabeth Vogler Sink, nurtured and grew their loving life and family together in Midway. He enjoyed a long and productive career with Western Electric, and was a member of the AT&T Pioneers. In addition to being a wise and loving father and husband, Lake was a respected citizen of the Midway community. His gentle, yet strong, demeanor and objective, fair insights led and encouraged family and friends alike. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Coy Sink and Fonzo Sink, and his sister, Ruby Sink Thacker. In addition to his wife, Lake is survived by three children, Richard Sink, Ilene Trujillo and Patricia Sink; a daughter-in-law, Brenda West Sink; a son-in-law, Jaime Trujillo; six grandchildren, Missy and Mark Moore, Beth and Andy Beck and Sandra and Aliana Trujillo; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Beth and Tanner Moore; three sisters, Grace Sink Fritts, Elizabeth Sink Hilton and Frances Sink Smith; and a brother, J.D. Sink. The visitation with family and friends will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Faith Missionary Alliance Church (1077 Gumtree Road). The funeral service will be at Faith Missionary Alliance Church at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, with the Rev. Michael Gates, the Rev. Lee Strange, the Rev.
