BAITY
JONESVILLE -- Mrs. Mary Magdalene Cockerham Baity, 82, of Hurt Road passed away Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth in Winston-Salem. She was born April 21, 1918, in Yadkin County to the late Joseph Harding and Hulda Bray Cockerham. Mrs. Baity was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker to her family and was a member of Island Ford Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Preston Lee Baity in August of 1997; a son, Bobby Lee Baity; and several brothers and sisters. Surviving are her three daughters, Aileen B. (Robert) Terrell and Carolyn B. Foreman of King and Linda B. (Roger) Key of Jonesville; six grandchildren, Teresa Anderson and Perry Foreman and Sonja Pardue of King, Dana Hutchens of Boonville, Bobby Terrell of Winston-Salem and Shelley Caudle of Boonville; six great-grandchildren; a brother, John Cockerham of Jonesville; five half brothers, J.C. Cockerham, Dennis Cockerham, Sam Cockerham, Charlie Cockerham and Robert Cockeham; and a half sister, Rose Emma Kennedy. Her funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Gentry Family Chapel, by the Rev. Jake Penley and Fred Moretz. Burial will follow in the Boonville cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601, N., Yadkinville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

BENNETT
Mrs. Adelaide Livengood Bennett, 87, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 2, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace in Winston-Salem. She was born Dec. 30, 1913, in Forsyth County to Caleb and Effie Motsinger Livengood. Mrs. Livengood was formerly of Elmwood Drive and was a member of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church. She was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Bennett Sr., in 1981, and a son, Charles R. Bennett, in 1999. Surviving are her son, James E. "Doc" Bennett Jr. and wife Barbara of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Nancy B. Frye and husband Frank of Winston-Salem, and Martha B. Petrea of Centralia, Ill.; a special daughter-in-law, Pat Bennett of Bethlehem, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. J.P. "Elizabeth" Hammons of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Alfred S. Livengood of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Konnoak Hills Moravian Church with the Rev. John Rights officiating. Burial will follow in the Moravian graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Konnoak Hills Moravian Church Building Fund, 3401 Konnoak Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. BREWER
Mrs. Mildred Kathryn Palmer Brewer, 76, of 5211 Little Brook Lane died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Brewer was born Nov. 25, 1924, to the late Cyrus A. and Leia Haygood Palmer. She was lifelong resident of the Winston-Salem area and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. On Sept 1, 1982, she retired from BellSouth after 31 years of service. She was also a member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers of America. Mrs. Brewer is survived by her husband, Albert Eugene Brewer of the home; three sons, Stephen L. Brewer of Clemmons, Michael E. Brewer of Winston-Salem and Jeffrey L. Brewer of Walkertown; three grandchildren, Christopher Michael Brewer, David Wayne Brewer and Kevin Scott Brewer; and a brother, Kenneth L. Palmer of Winston-Salem. The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel by Dr. Gary Chapman. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. The family requests that memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

BROWN
ELKIN -- Mr. Lonnie Robert Brown, 81, of 4818 Austin-Traphill Road died Wednesday morning, Jan. 3, 2001, at his home after an extended illness. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Charity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jim Darnell and the Rev. Amos Lynch. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Mr. Brown was born in Wilkes County on Sept. 28, 1919, to Millard and Pearl Sprinkle Brown. He was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. and was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Vallie Campbell; and two brothers, Clyde Brown and Fred Brown. Surviving are his wife, Maude Billings Brown of the home; two daughters, Linda Lyon of Winston-Salem, and Patricia (Dicky) Luffman of State Road; a grandson, Tony (Ann) Smith of State Road; a great-grandson, Tyler Smith; a sister, Mabel Ledbetter of Elkin; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Brown of Elkin. The family suggests that any memorials be made to Hospice of Surry-Yadkin County, 1326 N. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030. Kennedy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CAMPBELL
JEFFERSON -- Osie Graybeal Duvall Campbell, 93, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001. She was born Dec. 22, 1907, in Ashe County, a daughter of the late J.W. and Jennie Graybeal. She was preceded in death by her husbands Raymond Duvall and Charlie Campbell; a son, James Duvall; and three grandchildren. Surviving are three sons, John Duvall of Wilson, Jack Duvall of Fleetwood, and Joe Duvall of Jefferson; two stepdaughters, Ina Anderson of Jefferson, and Shirley Jordan of Scottville; three brothers, Ted Graybeal of Jefferson, Charles Graybeal of Hamptonville, and James Graybeal of Jefferson; four sisters, Nell Hudler of West Jefferson, Lucy Elliott of Charlotte, Ruth Rhodes of North Wilkesboro, and Irene Edwards of West Jefferson; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Miller and the Rev. John Duvall officiating. EAST BEND -- Mr. Charlie W. Hicks, 77, of 2228 Flinthill Road passed away Jan. 2, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Franklin County, Va., to Grady and Annie Anderson Hicks. Mr. Hicks was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Ella Jean Hicks, and by a son, Albert Leroy Hicks. Surviving are his wife, Florida, of the home; four daughters, Mary Spencer and Loretta Edwards, both of Mount Airy, Linda Snavely of Lambsburg, Va., and Ruth Ann Sennett of Elkin; four sons, Charles Hicks of Mount Airy, Kelly Hicks and James Hicks, both of East Bend, and Richard Hicks of Mount Airy; special sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Paul Yopp of Callaway, Va., Nina Wallace of Rocky Mount, Va., Barbara and Doug Campbell of Rocky Mount, Va., Gracie and James Wright of Rocky Mount, Va., Essie and Ray Morris of Newport News, Va., Jean and Oliver Jordan of Boones Mill, Va.; four brothers, Rufus and Francis Hicks of Boones Mill, Va., Wilfred and Ruby Hicks of Boones Mill, Va., Jerry and Evelyn Hicks of Vinton, Va., and Robert and Ethel Hicks of Stanton, Va.; four step-daughters, Kay Cook of Pfafftown, Ann Vest of Yadkinville, Pat Hawks of Lowgap, and Rose Stewart of East Bend; two stepsons, Steve Dowell of East Bend, and Terry Dowell of Mocksville; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren and 15 step-great-grandchildren. LACKEY
YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Thelma Hobson Lackey, 86, of 3333 Union Cross Church Road died Jan. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Yadkin County to William Monroe and Suzy Jester Hobson. Mrs. Lackey was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, sister and devoted member of Union Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Suzanne Lackey Gold of Hendersonville and Angela Lackey of San Francisco; a sister, Allene Moxley of Boonville; a brother, Conrad Hobson of East Bend; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Union Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenny Gooden. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 to lie in state. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The viewing will be from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend and the family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service Friday in the church fellowship hall. LASHMIT
SUPPLY -- Mr. Robert Gray "Bill" Lashmit, 71, died Jan. 1, 2001, at his home in Supply. Mr. Lashmit was born March 23, 1929, in Davie County to Hubert A. and Frances Miller Lashmit. He served with the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean conflict and retired from the Tar Heel Banana Co. in 1991. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Eller Lashmit. Survivors include two sons, Alex Gray Lashmit and Billy Eugene Lashmit of Winston-Salem; his wife Deborah of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Chris Lashmit and wife Mandy, and Alicia Lashmit, all of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Opa Masten and Frankie Strumfels of Winston-Salem, and June Booth of Charlotte; two nieces, Lisa Strumfels and Amy Strumfels of Winston-Salem; and a nephew, Alan Chastain of Greenbrier, Tenn. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Francis Smith. LOWE
Mr. Benjamin George Lowe Jr. of 703 Hudson St. died Tuesday evening at Silas Creek Manor after several years of illness. He was born in Badin County on March 24, 1917, to Benjamin George Lowe Sr. and Rosa Griffin Lowe. Mr. Lowe retired from Container Corporation of America in 1979. He was a member of Crestwood Baptist Church. In retirement he traveled a lot and enjoyed coin collecting. He was an avid baseball fan and managed a semi-pro team here years ago. He was an excellent gardener and shared vegetables and fruit with his neighbors and others. He was predeceased by his first wife, Violet Allen Lowe, in 1977. Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Juanita Gamble Lowe of the home; three sons, Allen Grey Lowe and his wife, Pat, of Rural Hall, Larry Wayne Lowe and his wife, Betty, of Winston-Salem, and Tommy Lee Lowe of Naples, Fla.; a daughter, Virginia Lowe-Allgood and her husband, John, of Winston-Salem; a stepson, David Soots of the home; a stepdaughter, Sharon Rhodes of North East, Md.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by the Rev. J. Marion Rector. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

LOWRANCE
On Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at 6:30 p.m. Deacon Joe went home to be with the Lord. Deacon Joseph Woodrow Lowrance, 81, was born March 14, 1919, in Cowpens, S.C. to the late Jim and Sallie T. Lowrance. To that union 13 children were born with two surviving, a brother, Donald Lowrance and a sister, Sallie Wilson of Durham. Deacon Joe resided at 1600 E. Third St., Winston-Salem and was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County public schools. He was married to Mae Ella Lowrance for 61 years. To that blessed union seven children were born, five girls and two boys, JoJean L. Earley (William) of Rockville, Md., Delois L. Sheppard (the Rev. W.F.) of Tampa, Fla., Judy L. Cobb, Lacine Lowrance, Debbra L. Robinson, Joseph Jr. (Linda), and Michael Lowrance, all of Winston-Salem; a godson, Freddie Fuller Sr. (Paulette) of Allentown, Pa.; two devoted sisters-in-law, Margaret Lowrance and Juanita Timmons. Deacon Joe was proud and blessed with eight grandchildren, Aaron and Tracey Earley, Melanie Cobb, Shawnee, Danita, Pierre, Leah, Joseph and Demitmos Lowrance; two great-grandchildren, Le'Ann Cobb and De Andra Lowrance; and a host of other relatives, nieces, nephews and cousins. Deacon Joe was a deacon (the Lord's servant for 60 years or more), a veteran of World War II and a Prince Hall Mason. He was a faithful and dutiful member of Christ Rescue Temple Apostolic Church. Deacon Joe was of service in any capacity in the church, namely that of the transportation department. He was a role model to anyone and to all people who cared to listen. Homegoing services for Deacon Joe will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, from Christ Rescue Temple Apostolic Church, with Bishop Willie Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from noon to the service hour at the church. MARTIN
BOONVILLE -- Our beloved and devoted father, Mr. Billy Gray Martin, 67, of Wolfe Road passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Hoots Memorial Hospital. He was born April 25, 1933, in Yadkin County, the son of the late Roger and Etta Williams Martin. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 45 years, Allie Jane Martin of the home; four daughters, Etta (Willie) Phillips of Jonesville, Allie Jane Martin of the home, Janice (Ross) Webster of Mount Airy and Brenda Allen of Jonesville; three sons, Michael Martin of Kentucky, Kenny Martin of Boonville and Jeffrey (Donna) Martin of East Bend; a sister, Lucy Ann (Richard) Taylor of Boonville; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. His funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Gentry Family Chapel, with the Rev. James B. Hunt officiating. Burial will be in the cemetery of First United Presbyterian Church of Boonville. The funeral wake will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.

MATHIEU
Louis "Phil" Mathieu, 81, of Grandview Drive, Winston-Salem, formerly of Springfield, Mass., died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem. Born in Montreal, Canada, he was a resident of Springfield most of his life, moving to Winston-Salem in 1994. Phil was an Army veteran of World War II. He owned and operated the Agawam Construction Co. for more than 40 years, retiring in 1980. He was a former communicant of St. Michael's Cathedral. Phil was the widower of Pat (Peloquin) Mathieu who died in 1985. He is survived by two daughters, Jeanette Cormier, with whom he made his home, and Patricia Szezeak of Westfield, Mass.; a son-in-law, Brian Cormier of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Annette Lucia of Springfield, and Jean Mathieu of Canada; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A brother, Ross, and two sisters, Irene and Betty, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield, Conn., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael's Cathedral, State Street, Springfield. Burial will be in St. Michael's cemetery. His family will receive relatives and friends at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the YMCA, 275 Chestnut St., Springfield, MA 01104.

MOELLER
Mrs. Deborah "Lori" Swaim Moeller, 33, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at her residence. She was born Aug. 21, 1967, in Forsyth County to Jim and Toni Shaw Bullard. Mrs. Moeller was a member of Parkview Church of Christ. Surviving are her husband, Fred Moeller of the home; a daughter, Alex Moeller of the home; a son, Gary Swaim Jr. of Lexington; a stepdaughter, Brandy Moeller of Mocksville; her mother, Toni Hege and husband Richard of Winston-Salem; her father, Jim Bullard and Betty Gardner of Winston-Salem; a sister, Seina Johnson and husband Bill of Rural Hall; a brother, Kenneth Bullard and wife Liz of Winston-Salem; her grandmother, Lillian Schoolfield of Kernersville; a niece, Lacy Woods of Rural Hall; a nephew, Kenneth Bullard Jr. of Winston-Salem; a stepsister, Pam Anderson of Walkertown; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Daniel Hauser officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

PALMER
Mr. Kenneth Lee Palmer, 78, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 6, 1922, in Forsyth County to Cyrus Alexander and Lelia Hagood Palmer. Mr. Palmer served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from AT&T with 31 years of service. A sister, Mildred Brewer, preceded him in death. Surviving are three nephews, Steve, Michael and Jeff Brewer, all of Winston-Salem; and a brother-in-law, Albert Eugene Brewer of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park by the Rev. Jack T. Nance. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel)

PRICE
Mr. Elton Junice Price Sr. of 1725 Dunleith Ave. Apt. 5E was born Feb. 15, 1927, in Hamilton, Bermuda, to the late William Lee and Madgeline Price. He was a resident of Winston-Salem for more than 35 years, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired truck driver. Mr. Price was a member of Christ Rescue Temple Apostolic Church where he served on the missionary choir and deacon/brother board. In the community he was a faithful humanitarian as evidenced by his volunteer work with the Samaritan Ministries. He departed this life Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Christ Rescue Temple Apostolic Church with Bishop Willie Davis Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Salisbury National cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Eugene Lamb Price of the home; 10 children, Beverly (Price) Howard of Indianapolis, Elton Price Jr. of Winston-Salem, Jacqueline Martin of Rural Hall, Judith L. (Bernard) Shorter of Winston-Salem, William L. (Velvet) Price, Christopher (Vanessa) Price Sr., Christine Brown, Michelle (Joseph) Epps and Maria, all of Winston-Salem, and Betty Ann Galloway of New Jersey; 35 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. RIGLER
CHARLOTTE -- Mrs. Cornelia Davis Rigler, 98, of Charlotte died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Lakeview Living Center. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, in Elmwood cemetery with the Rev. John Alexander officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Dilworth Chapel of Hankins & Whittington. Mrs. Rigler was born in Anson County, Oct. 5, 1902, the daughter of the late Henry Vann Davis and Flora Carpenter Davis. She was educated in the Charlotte school system and attended Brevard College in Brevard where she was an A student. Cornelia was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Jackson Rigler, and daughter, Jeanne Rigler Porter. Mrs. Rigler is survived by two daughters, Martha Rigler Furr and her husband, Robert, of Charlotte, and Mrs. Anne Rigler Allison of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Jeanne Furr Murdock of Concord, Robert C. Furr Jr. of Hillsville, Va., Richard L. Furr of Durham, Elizabeth Allison West of Austin, Texas, and John A. Allison IV and Joyce Allison McDonald, both of Winston-Salem; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to her church, Sharon Presbyterian, 5201 Sharon Road, Charlotte, NC 28210. Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Blvd.

SETTLE
Mr. Vincent Spencer "TC Bump" Settle of 145 S. Graham Ave. was born Jan. 5, 1932, to the late James Sr. and Willean Grier Settle. He was a native and lifelong resident of Winston-Salem where he attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County public schools and was a 1951 graduate of Carver High School and attended Winston-Salem. Mr. Settle was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of Lawrence Joel American Legion Post #453. He was a member of Lloyd Presbyterian Church. He departed this life Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at the Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Lloyd Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Laura Spangler officiating and the Rev. S.W. Alexander giving the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. Mr. Settle is survived by two sisters, Gladys S. Bailey of Baltimore, Md., and Roxie Settle of the home; a brother-in-law, Robert Brown of Winston-Salem; two nephews, Carl (Mary) Settle and Norman Brown of Winston-Salem; three great-nephews, Carl Settle III of Ft. Gordon, Ga., James Settle and William Furches of Winston-Salem; a great-niece, Aleatha Furches; cousins, James Singletary and Arnette Shuler all of Winston-Salem; and other relatives and friends.
