SHELTON
STOKESDALE -- Mr. Jack Marshall Shelton, 71, of 4734 Ellisboro Road died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Countryside Village. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Eden United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Shelton was born in Rockingham County. He was a member of Eden United Methodist Church and was a Navy veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a retired real-estate agent and was retired from J.C. Penney. Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary Lou Flynn Shelton. Survivors include his son, Glenn Shelton of Washington, D.C.; brothers Charles and Billy Shelton of Madison, and Donald "Donnie" Shelton of Greenville, S.C.; and sisters Hilda McGee of Wallburg, Wilma Fontaine of Kernersville, and Connie Hopper of Madison. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Colonial Funeral Home in Madison and other times at 4734 Ellisboro Road, Stokesdale.

VALENTINE
SPARTA -- Mr. Charles T. Valentine, 77, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Sugar Grove, Va., to William and Hattie Lee Valentine. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Evangelist Carolyn and Athon McCray of Glade Creek; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Carson Valentine of Sparta and the Rev. Charles and Louise Valentine of Raleigh; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence, Va., with the Rev. Theodore Brandon, the Rev. Mike Brinegar, Evangelist Carolyn McCray and Pastor Charles Valentine Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. military rites will be conducted at the graveside by Grayson County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7726. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Abigail Boyer, 403 Churchview Lane, Fries, VA 24330. VAUGHN
ENNICE -- Mr. John Vaughn, 87, of 441 Vaughn Road died Wednesday morning, Jan. 3, 2001, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Greene Vaughn of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Nelson and Brenda Vaughn of Ennice; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Harold Baldwin, Gaye and Guy Galyean, and Barbara and William McGrady, all of Ennice; six grandchildren; nine grandchildren; a brother, Paul Vaughn of Ennice; and three sisters, Hazel Cleary and Hattie Bedsaul of Ennice, and Cleo Swicegood of Welcome. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Little Pine Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Jay Tilley, the Rev. Brian Galyean, Elder Dale Greene, the Rev. Fred E. Jennings and Mr. Eddie Wooten officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church Thursday afternoon where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Pine Church of the Brethren, c/o Jeanette Anders, 619 Pine Brook Road, Ennice, NC 28623. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta is in charge of the arrangements.

WILHELM
Mr. James Frank Wilhelm, 67, of 2224 Elizabeth Ave. in Winston-Salem died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Fairview cemetery, with the Rev. Harold McDonald officiating. He was born March 19, 1933, in Stanley County to James Clyde and Agatha Blackwelder Wilhelm. Mr. Wilhelm was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, member and past president of the Beekeepers Association, member of the Genealogical Association in Winston-Salem and active in the Boy Scouts of America. Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Phelps Wilhelm of the home; a son, James E. Wilhelm of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Jennie W. Mau of Raleigh; and a brother, Dwight Wilhelm of Arden. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday one hour prior to the hour of the service. A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, Winston-Salem at a later date. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

ARNOLD
ANGIER -- Stephen Ashley Arnold of 2996 Benson Road died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at 11:55 p.m. at his parents home in Angier. Stephen was born in Winston-Salem. He was saved and baptized through the Pleasant Plains Community Church. Surviving are his parents, Jimmy Wayne Arnold and Lois Gail Arnold of Angier; twin sister Stephanie Ann Beckwith and family of Angier; and brothers Richard Wayne Arnold and family of Coats and David Scott Arnold of Hollyridge. Also surviving are aunts and uncles and eight nieces and nephews of Angier; his grandparents, John Lewis and Mary Annis Shores of Winston-Salem; Aunt Janice Shores and daughter (cousin) Mary Dell Hicks of Advance; and Uncle Paul and Aunt Barbara Schmied of Kernersville. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph Alvis Arnold and Viola Parton Arnold of Angier. Services will be held at Pleasant Plains Community Church in Angier.

BEASLEY
RURAL HALL -- Memorial services for Michelle Sydney Beasley, the infant daughter of Charles Roman and Batsukh Dagvasuren Beasley of Broad Street in Rural Hall will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in the Rural Hall Church of Christ, with Ministers Ron Voss and Chris Booth, and Elder Thad Cox officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today in Crestview Memorial Park. Along with her parents, she is survived by a brother, Saruul Beasley of the home; maternal grandmother, Dagvasuren of Ulaanbaatar , Mongolia; paternal grandmother, Ronda M. Beasley of Winston-Salem; paternal grandfather, Jimmy R. Beasley of King. The family will request that memorial gifts be made to Team Expansion for a street children's center in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, P.O. Box 146, Rural Hall, NC 27045.

BENNETT
Mrs. Adelaide Livengood Bennett, 87, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 2, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace in Winston-Salem. She was born Dec. 30, 1913, in Forsyth County to Caleb and Effie Motsinger Livengood. Mrs. Bennett was formerly of Elmwood Drive and was a member of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church. She was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Bennett Sr., in 1981, and a son, Charles R. Bennett, in 1999. Surviving are her son, James E. "Doc" Bennett Jr. and wife Barbara of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Nancy B. Frye and husband Frank of Winston-Salem, and Martha B. Petrea of Centralia, Ill.; a special daughter-in-law, Pat Bennett of Bethlehem, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. J.P. "Elizabeth" Hammons of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Alfred S. Livengood of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Konnoak Hills Moravian Church with the Rev. John Rights officiating. Burial will follow in the Moravian graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Konnoak Hills Moravian Church Sanctuary Refurbishing Fund, 3401 Konnoak Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. BERRY
ROXBORO -- Margaret Jackson Berry, 85, formerly of 421 S. Morgan St., died Thursday morning at the Person Memorial Hospital. She was wife of the late Milton Banks Berry, who died in 1991. Born in Person County, she was daughter of the late Robert Andrew and Carrie Foushee Jackson. Mrs. Berry was affiliated with Berry's Appliances for several years. She was a member of the Roxboro Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Anne Berry and Howard Little Jr. of Advance; three grandchildren, Elizabeth L. Taylor, Howard Little III and Deborah L. Little; two brothers, James B. Jackson of Johnson City, Tenn., and William H. Jackson of Indian Head, Md. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Person Memorial cemetery with the Rev. DuPre Sanders officiating. Visitation will be held 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Roxboro Baptist Church, P.O. Box 348, Roxboro, NC 27573.

BROWN
Ms. Valjeane Elaine Brown of 1456 Oak St. passed Wednesday morning, Jan. 3, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born to the late Robert Lee and Annie Brown Sr. in Winston-Salem. She was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, where she attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County public schools, graduating from Atkins High School in 1966. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, Ms. Brown was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lee Brown Jr. Surviving are a daughter, Teresa Brown, and a grandson, Patrick Brown, both of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Edward Lee and Michael Ray Brown, both of Reading, Pa.; several aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends including a devoted cousin, Sandra Brown of Winston-Salem. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Evergreen cemetery with the Rev. Rhodford L. Anderson officiating. (Hooper)

BUMGARNER
HARMONY -- Mr. James Earl Bumgarner, 75, of County Line Road passed away Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Davis Medical Center in Statesville. Mr. Bumgarner was born May 28, 1925, in Iredell County to the late James O. and Florence Sweet Bumgarner. He was preceded in death by a brother, Guy O. Bumgarner, and two sisters, Anna Belle Shaw and Louise Beck. He was a member of Rock Spring Baptist Church. He retired in 1982 from Ryder P.I.E. where he was a truck driver and was also a retired teamster. Mr. Bumgarner is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Mrs. Betty Branson Bumgarner; four sons, James T. Bumgarner of Mocksville, Samuel O. Bumgarner and wife, Sally, of Carlyle, Ill., Terry Cardwell and wife, Linda, of Belews Creek, and Jerry Cardwell of Harmony; three daughters, Faye Harris and husband, Dale, of Harmony, Sue Bumgarner of Augusta, Ga., and Tracy Sanbavol and husband, Alex, of Faith; a sister, Doris Shinn of Charlotte; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Rock Spring Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Hedgecock officiating. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military rites. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Davie Funeral Service LLC, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville, NC 27028 will be serving the Bumgarner family.

COOKE
Mr. Ray Lavern Cooke, also known as "Al Green," age 45, of 1039 Rundell St. passed away on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born to Willie Sylvester Nettles and Nellie Mae Loraine Cooke in Timmonsville, S.C. Mr. Cooke was educated in the local schools and was employed with Vernon Produce. He was preceded in death by his father, Willie Sylvester Nettles; his mother, Nellie Mae Loraine; his paternal grandfather, Willie Nettles; paternal grandmother, Girlena Johnson; maternal grandfather, Marion Simon; and maternal grandmother, Gertrude Hicks. Surviving family members are brothers Sylvester Junior (Kathleen) Nettles of Yadkinville, N.C., John Edward Nettles of Winston-Salem, Roger Vernon Nettles of Winston-Salem, Joe Wesley (Ruby) Nettles of Winston-Salem, and Christopher Jay Nettles of Winston-Salem; a sister, Mrs. Betty (Earl) Tyson of Baltimore, Maryland; devoted aunts Barbara S. Pearson of Winston-Salem and Mauise Dixon of Hartsville, S.C.; and an uncle, James Johnson of Orlando, Fla. The funeral service for Mr. Cooke will be on Saturday, Jan. 6, at noon at the Frances S. & Jerry C. Gilmore Jr. Memorial Chapel with burial following at Evergreen cemetery. Pastor Sam Hickerson will be officiating. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until noon. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from 1039 Rundell St. Arrangements are entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home. CORNATZER
YADKINVILLE -- Chester McKinley "Mac" Cornatzer, 74, of 2136 Shacktown Road, formerly of 237 Craft Drive in Winston-Salem, passed away late Wednesday night, Jan. 3, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 2, 1926 in Clemmons to the late Roy Lee and Mamie Beauchamp Cornatzer. Mr. Cornatzer was employed by Piedmont Concrete Co. for over 38 years. He leaves his loving wife of 54 years, Opal Hauser Cornazter; two daughters, Patricia Russell (Shawn) of Rural Hall, Carolyn Bracken of Lewisville; two grandchildren, Lena Hudak (Gary) of Belews Creek and Kyle Edwards (Sharon) of Winston-Salem; three great-grandchildren Shane, Nichole and Ryan, and two step-great-grandchildren, Nicole and Michael; two sisters, Madeline Styers (Bill) of Jonesville, and Minnie Rea Hutchins of Clemmons; two brothers, Roy Lee Cornatzer Jr. (JoAnn) of Clemmons and Jerry Cornatzer (Glenda) of East Bend. His family will receive relatives and friends at Vogler's & Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road on Friday, Jan. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6 at Vogler's Chapel conducted by Harold Bassett. The graveside service will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park.

KING -- Mr. Charlie Edward "Duke" Craig, 70, of Slate Road died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital. He was born July 18, 1930, in Stokes County to Charlie Graham and Haley Ann Justice Craig. Surviving are his wife, Rebecca Baker "Becky" Craig of the home; two daughters, Kathie (Donnie) Bowman of Pinnacle, and Rhonda (Rick Lassiter) Craig of King; three grandchildren, Jeffrey (Shannon) Bowman, Mikal (Michael) Grogan and Jeremy (Bridgett) Bowman; three great-grandchildren, Anna and Marissa Bowman and Skylar Grogan; his mother, Haley Yates of King; and 12 brothers and sisters, Ruth Warner, Linda Cromer, Ann Barr, Mary Watts, Jean Vauterlaus, J.C., Curtis, Monty, Jim Craig, Bud, Steve and Eddie Yates. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. this evening at Slate Funeral Home in King with the Rev. James Saul and Chaplain Ken Bradstock officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Mountain View Baptist Church cemetery. LOWGAP -- Mrs. Edith Marie Lawson Hodges, 80, of 160 Vander Trail, Lowgap, widow of Vander Oakes Hodges, died Wednesday night at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Hodges was born July 20, 1920, in McDowell Co., W.Va., to the late John Thomas and Flora Hanks Lawson. She had been employed by Clayton Supply Co. in Lowgap, Mount Airy Furniture Co., and was a wife and homemaker. Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy Waddell and Oma Cockerham, both of Winston-Salem, Eula and Woodie Johnson of Siloam and Emma and Larry Jenkins of Mount Airy; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest and Kathy Hodges and Billy and Judy Hodges, all of Winston-Salem, Wallace and Cheryl Hodges of Kernersville, N.C., and Jerry Hodges of Lowgap; eight granddaughters, Ann Saddler, Karen Sells, Pam Cockerham, Michele Hodges, Melanie Hodges, Sherry Ramey, Tonya Hodges and Mindy Tate; seven grandsons, John Hodges, Kevin Johnson, Kris Johnson, Brian Smith, Tony Smith, Jerry Hodges and Ricky Bedsaul; two great-grandsons, Alex Saddler and Tanner Saddler; one great-granddaughter, Katie Tate; five stepgrandsons, nine stepgreat-grandsons, two stepgreat-granddaughters; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Everett (Frita) Rose of Welch, W.Va., and Mrs. Robert (Georgia) Carroll of Princeton, W.Va.; one brother, Jerry (Red) Murphy of Boyton Beach, Fla., and a sister-in-law, Helen Lawson of Beckley, W.Va. In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Hodges was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffrey Cook Hodges, two brothers, John Henry Lawson and Jack Lawson, and by two sisters, Virginia Wilson and Grace Nolly. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Faith Baptist Church with services conducted by Elder Larry Crotts and Brian Smith, with burial to follow in the Flat Top Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until time to be taken to the church and to lie in state 30 minutes before the service. HRUSKA
YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Virginia Neal Hruska, 79, of Dudley Street, passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born May 2, 1921 in Stokes County to the late Edd and Kate Dodson Bennett. Mrs. Hruska was a parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Medical Corps. On April 7, 2001, she would have been married for 50 years to her husband, James E. "Jim" Hruska, who survives of the home. Also surviving are her three daughters, Barbara Ann and the late Gilmer Goad, Gail (Mike) Joyce, all of Walnut Cove , and Kathy (Morris) Healy, of Yadkinville; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Sue and the late Uba Brown, of East Bend, and Dolly (Bobby) Moore of Lawsonville. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hruska was preceded in death by two brothers, Moir Bennett and Paul Bennett; a sister, Bessie Bennett; and her first husband, Raymond Martin Neal. Her Funeral Requiem Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at the Gentry Family Chapel by Father Kenneth Novak. Burial will follow in the Yadkin Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the rosary to be prayed at 8:30 p.m. Friday, at Gentry Family Funeral Service on U.S. 601 North of Yadkinville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 505, Yadkinville, N.C., 27055, or the Yadkin County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1355, Yadkinville, N.C., 27055.

KING
Mr. James William King passed away Jan. 3, 2001, at Silas Creek Nursing Home after an extended period of illness. He was a native of Winston-Salem. He was born Dec. 25, 1919, to the late Dexter and Robena King. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie King of Greenville; two sisters, Mrs. Christine Dalton of Detroit, Mich., and Ruth Saddler of New York, N.Y. He is survived by two daughters, Claudette Lewis and Patricia (Elder William) Koger, both of Winston-Salem; one stepdaughter, Sharon (Lester) Tharpe of Winston-Salem; one sister, Mrs. Eloise (James) Simington of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. King was of the Baptist faith and was well-known for his skillful ability to play the piano. The funeral service for James William King will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 6, at the Ministries of Truth Church at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the Evergreen cemetery. Dr. Joseph Jones of Zion Memorial Baptist Church will officiate. Visitation is from 1:30 until 2 p.m. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from 1712 Briar Lake Road. Arrangements entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home. (Gilmore)
