LACKEY
YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Thelma Hobson Lackey, 86, of 3333 Union Cross Church Road died Jan. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Yadkin County to William Monroe and Suzy Jester Hobson. Mrs. Lackey was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, sister and devoted member of Union Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Suzanne Lackey Gold of Hendersonville and Angela Lackey of San Francisco; a sister, Allene Moxley of Boonville; a brother, Conrad Hobson of East Bend; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Union Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenny Gooden. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 to lie in state. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service Friday in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Union Grove Baptist Church, c/o Clay Hobson, 2633 Snider Road, Yadkinville, NC 27055. Huff Funeral Home in East Bend is serving the family.

LASHMIT
SUPPLY -- Mr. Robert Gray "Bill" Lashmit, 71, died Jan. 1, 2001, at his home in Supply. Mr. Lashmit was born March 23, 1929, in Davie County to Hubert A. and Frances Miller Lashmit. He served with the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean conflict and retired from the Tar Heel Banana Co. in 1991. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Eller Lashmit. Survivors include two sons, Alex Gray Lashmit and Billy Eugene Lashmit of Winston-Salem; his wife Deborah of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Chris Lashmit and wife Mandy, and Alicia Lashmit, all of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Opa Masten and Frankie Strumfels of Winston-Salem, and June Booth of Charlotte; two nieces, Lisa Strumfels and Amy Strumfels of Winston-Salem; and a nephew, Alan Chastain of Greenbrier, Tenn. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Francis Smith. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 3250 High Point Road, Winston-Salem. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

LAWRENCE
ELKIN -- Mrs. Etta Greene Lawrence, 95, of 659 N. Bridge St. died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Brithaven in Wilkesboro. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Elkin by the Rev. Bill Johnson, the Rev. Joe Dell Rust and the Rev. Dennis Murphy. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Lawrence was born Sept. 20, 1905, at James Clingman and Elvira Calloway Greene. She spent her early years in the Clingman community. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Elkin and was the owner/operator of Ideal Beauty Shoppe in Elkin for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Odell Lawrence in 1985. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. The family suggests that any memorials be made to First Baptist Church in Elkin or Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Clingman. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.

LOWE
Mr. Benjamin George Lowe Jr. of 703 Hudson St. died Tuesday evening at Silas Creek Manor after several years of illness. He was born in Badin County on March 24, 1917, to Benjamin George Lowe Sr. and Rosa Griffin Lowe. Mr. Lowe retired from Container Corporation of America in 1979. He was a member of Crestwood Baptist Church. In retirement he traveled a lot and enjoyed coin collecting. He was an avid baseball fan and managed a semi-pro team here years ago. He was an excellent gardener and shared vegetables and fruit with his neighbors and others. He was predeceased by his first wife, Violet Allen Lowe, in 1977. Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Juanita Gamble Lowe of the home; three sons, Allen Grey Lowe and his wife, Pat, of Rural Hall, Larry Wayne Lowe and his wife, Betty, of Winston-Salem, and Tommy Lee Lowe of Naples, Fla.; a daughter, Virginia Lowe-Allgood and her husband, John, of Winston-Salem; a stepson, David Soots of the home; a stepdaughter, Sharon Rhodes of North East, Md.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by the Rev. J. Marion Rector. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park.

MAY
Mr. Robert Vernon May Sr., 84, of Winston-Salem died early Thursday morning, Jan. 4, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Guilford County to William Alexander and Laura May. Mr. May served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and later in the N.C. National Guard. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 9418 in Randleman and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his son, Mr. Robert Vernon May Jr. of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, PFC Richard C. May of Fort Bragg, Airman First Class Jennifer L. May of Seymour Johnson A.F.B. in Goldsboro and Robert B. May and Randall P. May of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Timothy Gross. Entombment will follow in Randolph Memorial Park near Asheboro. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jonestown Baptist Church Youth Group, 1695 Hanes Mall Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

McKAUGHN
Mrs. Loraine Conrad McKaughn, 83, of 2651 Spicewood Drive died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. McKaughn was born June 24, 1917, to Marvin W. and Mabel Conrad. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County and was a very active member of Olivet Moravian Church. Mrs. McKaughn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John H. McKaughn, and also by her sister, Pansy Mock, and her brother, Ned Conrad. She is survived by a son, Ken McKaughn, and a daughter, Rebecca Shepherd, both of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Karen Wall, Allison Bradley, Tracy Renegar, Greg McKaughn and Kenzie McKaughn; and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. Doug Rights at Olivet Moravian Church. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. Memorials may be made to Olivet Moravian Church, 2205 Olivet Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

MYERS
STATESVILLE -- Mr. Samuel Frank Myers Sr., 73, of 134 Safriet Road, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Born in Yadkin County on Dec. 1, 1927, he was the son of the late E.J.C. and Sallie Walker Myers. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 until 1947, and was a traffic manager for United Parcel Service until retirement. He later worked as a traffic manager for Lowe's Foods and Holly Farms in Wilkesboro. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church at Houstonville but attended Front Street Baptist Church in Statesville. He was also a member of Statesville Masonic Lodge No. 27. He was formerly married to Margaret Wallace Myers. Mr. Myers is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Samuel Frank Myers Jr. and Mary Helen Boone of Washington, D.C., and a daughter and son-in-law, Susan M. and Danny Queen of Wrightsville Beach, N.C.; two grandchildren, Samuel Frank Myers III and Thomas Wallace Myers; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Myers and Evan Myers; a brother, Lee Myers of Mocksville; two sisters, Ruth Reavis of Hamptonville and Ticie Renegar of Harmony; and a special friend, Hilda Robinson of Statesville. Funeral services for Mr. Myers will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at the Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Riddle officiating. Burial will be in the New Hope Baptist Church cemetery in Houstonville. Pallbearers will be Tom Stroud, Wilfred McCollum, Junior Joyner, Danny Queen, Bobby Renegar, Bill Cranfill, Jim Haynes and Beecher Grose. Masons in attendance will be honorary pallbearers. Masonic funeral rites will be conducted at the graveside by Statesville Masonic Lodge No. 27. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 until 2 p.m. at the Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Drive, Statesville, NC 28625 or to Statesville Masonic Lodge No. 27, P.O. Box 171, Statesville, NC 28687. SINGLETON
Lethia Mack Singleton of 3660 Cornell Blvd., 48, passed away Jan. 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 23, 1952, to Alberta Thompson Singleton and the late William M. Singleton in Forsyth County. Ms. Singleton was educated in the local school system and then graduated from Forsyth Technical Community College. She was a certified nursing assistant and employed at Vencor. She was of the Holiness faith. Her father, William M. Singleton, and brother, William Singleton Jr., preceded Ms. Singleton in death. She is survived by a devoted friend, Stoney Jones; two sons, Bur-Ray Singleton and Quinton Singleton, of the home; her mother, Alberta Singleton; sisters Shirley Hargett, Dorothy Bonner, Christine Singleton and Bertha Truesdale; 12 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The funeral service for Ms. Singleton will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the Frances S. & Jerry C. Gilmore Jr. Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:30 p.m. in the chapel. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from 366 Cornell Blvd. Arrangements are entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home. (Gilmore)

STEELE
SANDY RIDGE -- Jettie Bernice Ayers Steele, 96, formerly of Delta Church Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the Pine Forest Health Care Center in Danville, Va. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the Oak Ridge Baptist Church cemetery in Sandy Ridge with the Rev. Randy Roberts and the Rev. Melvin Shelton officiating. Mrs. Steele was a lifelong resident of Stokes County, was the oldest living member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Jake Steele. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Steele of Danville; step-nieces Edith Carter and Inez Jones of Madison, and Margaret Yorke of Winston-Salem; and step-nephew J.B. Jones of Madison. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday prior to the service. Her body will lie in state at Ray Funeral Home in Madison until 10 a.m. Saturday. The family requests that in lieu of flowers to PLEASE make memorial contributions to Oak Ridge Baptist Church, 4162 Highway 704 E., Sandy Ridge, NC 27046, or to the library of your choice.

UTT
STANLEYVILLE -- Mr. Ausby Winton Utt, 85, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 3, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. A native of Carroll County, Va., he was born Oct. 22, 1915, to the late David and Laura Williams Utt. Mr. Utt was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Air Forces (1943 to 1945). After his tour of military service, he moved to Winston-Salem in 1945 and was employed by the city of Winston-Salem for 20 years until his retirement. After his retirement, he went to work as a volunteer at Baptist Hospital from 1985 to 2000. Mr. Utt was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. Mr. Utt is survived by two daughters, Sharon Griffey and husband Harvey and Louise Beck and husband Robert, all of Mocksville; a son, Larry G. Utt and wife Ann of Bluff City, Tenn.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a special friend, Lorene Horton of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in the Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Roland Barnhardt. Full military honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 9 this evening at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Region 3, P.O. Box 25086, Winston-Salem, NC 27114.

WADE
Mr. George William Wade, 91, passed from this earthly life Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was the son of the late Mr. Charles Wade and Mrs. Bell Wade. He was born Aug. 30, 1909, in North Wilkesboro, where he graduated from Lincoln High School. He moved to Winston-Salem in 1930 and was a longtime member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. He was a pitcher for the semi-professional baseball team, the Winston-Salem Pond Giants, a World War II veteran and was retired from Baptist Hospital after over 43 years of service in the admitting office. Mr. Wade was preceded in death by a son, Mr. George Wade Jr. Surviving Mr. Wade is his loving wife, Mrs. Katherine Brown Wade, of the home; five children, Mrs. Gwen Marshall (Curtis), Mr. Charles Wade, Mr. Carl Wade, Mrs. Kathleen Wade Trinidad (Alex) and Mr. Gene Calvin Wade, all of Winston-Salem; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Services are tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Wilkes County. The family visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the service (12:30 to 1 p.m.). Interment will be in the church cemetery.

WHITLEY
KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Peggy West Whitley of Linville Road died at her home Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Voglers Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Pete Scot. Entombment will be in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. Mrs. Whitley was born in Winston-Salem May 28, 1930, a daughter of Wade and Beulah P. West. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 35 years of service. Mrs. Whitley was preceded in death by her husband, Edward D. Whitley and a son, Edward Whitley. Surviving are her mother, of Kernersville; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Bill Tuttle of Kernersville; and two nephews, Lee and Craig Tuttle of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and requests that any memorials be made to the American Diabetes. Association.

WILHELM
Mr. James Frank Wilhelm, 67, of 2224 Elizabeth Ave. in Winston-Salem died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Fairview cemetery, Albemarle with the Rev. Harold McDonald officiating. He was born March 19, 1933, in Stanly County to James Clyde and Agatha Blackwelder Wilhelm. Mr. Wilhelm was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, member and past president of the Beekeepers Association, member of the Genealogical Association in Winston-Salem and active in the Boy Scouts of America. Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Phelps Wilhelm of the home; a son, James E. Wilhelm of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Jennie W. Mau of Raleigh; and a brother, Dwight Wilhelm of Arden. The family will receive friends at Stanly Funeral Home, Albemarle from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday one hour prior to the hour of the service. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at the Scout Building at Calvary Baptist Church on Country Club Road in Winston-Salem. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Stanly Funeral Home in Albemarle is in charge of arrangements.

WINTERS
Mrs. Lessie W. Winters, 90, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Springwood Care, where she was a resident.
She was born Nov. 16, 1910, in Davie County to Dalton and Mary Susana Hudson Wall.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Will Winters.
Survivors include two brothers, Harvey Wall and wife Ione of Winston-Salem and Charles Otis Wall and wife Billie of Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.

YOUNG
Ms. Maggie Anderson Young, formerly of 1204 E. Second St. departed this life on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Health Center.
She was born Dec. 25, 1913, in South Carolina. She was preceded in death by C.D. Anderson, Woodrow Young and a daughter, Barbara J. Evans. Survivors include three sons, Otis Anderson and Eddie Anderson of Winston-Salem and Jimmy Anderson of Atlantic City, N.J.; a daughter, Wilhemina Burks of Winston-Salem; 24 grandchildren; a devoted granddaughter, Charlectar Cox, whom she raised; 28 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Mount Olive Baptist Church.
The viewing will take place at 1:30 p.m. and services will follow at the church.
The burial will be held at Piedmont Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
All funeral services will be rendered by Beasley's Triad Funeral Home.
