BARKER
GREENSBORO -- Mr. Ralph Eugene Barker, 75, of 121 Rocky Knoll Circle, died Wednesday, November 3, 1999. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 6, 1999 at 3:30 p.m. at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Vanstory Chapel. Burial will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park. Mr. Barker was a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church, retired from Bell South, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific during W.W.II, a member of the VFW Post 2087 and also the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel Pugh Barker and a sister, Helen Foust. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Richard Sands of Apex; a son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Edie Barker of Greensboro; brothers and sisters, Harold Barker, Alma Kirkman, Margie Pope all of Greensboro, Wilma Rush of Winston-Salem, and Otis Barker of Julian; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. BEAVER
MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Oscar Edwards Beaver, 76, of Spring Street, died Wednesday at the Wake Forest University/ Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Eaton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Neil Carter officiating. Burial will be in Rose cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Friday night from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. They request memorials be considered for the Capital fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Mocksville, 261 South Main Street, Mocksville, N.C. 27028. Mr. Beaver was born in Landis, N.C. on December 31, 1922. He was preceded in death by his parents, Estelle Adams Campbell, Paul Beaver and Millard Campbell and was a retired truck driver. He served in the 2nd Ranger Battalion and then the Co. E. 409th Infantry with the U.S. Army during WWII serving in Belgium, Austria, and Germany. Mr. Beaver was a member of the Mocksville First Presbyterian Church. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Diggs and Sara Sands and by three brothers, Paul Beaver, Kenneth Beaver, and Norman Beaver. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Cerny Beaver of the home; two sons, Clifford Beaver of Redmond, Washington and Paul Beaver and wife, Jane of Mocksville; a daughter, Jill Kiser and husband, Dick of Mocksville; seven grandchildren, Scott Beaver, James Beaver, Craig Beaver, Christopher Beaver, Katie Beaver, Andrew Kiser, and Mary Ann Kiser; three great-grandchildren, Suzie Beaver, Kaitlyn Beaver, and Derick Beaver; one sister, Mary Frances Johnson of Mocksville; six brothers, Marshall Beaver and wife, Betty Lee of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Gordon Beaver and wife, Mary Lee of Salisbury, James Campbell and wife, Betty of Lawsonville, David Beaver of Cooleemee, Donald Beaver and wife, Nancy of Mocksville, and Edwin Beaver and wife, Lorene of Salisbury; and several nieces and nephews.
BLACK
Mrs. Alice B. Black, 88, of 709 Glencoe Street, died Wednesday, November 3, 1999 at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons, after an extended illness. She was born May 11, 1911 in Kershaw, S.C. to the late Johnny Buffert and Mary Isaiah Buffert. She had been a resident of Winston-Salem since 1930 and was a retired employee of the Winston-Salem Leaf House. Mrs. Black was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she had served as an Usher for more than 50 years, she was a member of the Missionary Group #9, and the Galaxy Auxiliary. In the community, she was a lead singer of the Russell Camp Meeting Choir, the Red Rose Quartet, and other organizations. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Black. She leaves to cherish her memory, four sisters, Flossie B. White of Maryland, Mary B. Johnson, Nellie B. Eaton and spouse, William, and Viola B. Pollock, all of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Samuel Cueford of Winston-Salem, Walter Buffert of California, Mr. Shirley Buffert of New York, and Johnny Buffert, and spouse Fannie of Maryland; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 8, 1999 at 12:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Lowe officiating. KING -- Karen Breeze, 60, of King, died Friday, November 5, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center after a long illness. She is survived by her granddaughter, Katie Hill of the home; one son, Michael Breeze and wife, Peggy of Texas; and two daughters, Rebecca Webb and husband, Mike of King and Cindy Hill of Tenn. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 1999 at Crestview Memorial Park, Rural Hall. BROADWAY
BAYSE, VA. -- Mr. James Wilson Broadway of Bayse, Va., died at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va. on November 4, 1999. He was born in Winston-Salem, July 27, 1939, the son of Lonnie Delmer Broadway and mothered by Lou B. Honeycutt. He attended James Gray High School and enlisted in the Air Force. He worked for the Forsyth County Sheriff's Dept. in the 1960's. For the past 18 years, he had worked for Blue Ridge Trust Company as the Director of Safety Control for Willard and Vonnie Fansler, whose friendship he treasured. Mr. Broadway was a member of Immanuel Moravian Church of Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his father; beloved grandparents, James and Anne Marsh Broadway; and one son, Windall Gray Broadway. He is survived by his step-mother, Betty Broadway of Virginia Beach, Va; a son Christ Roland Broadway of Mocksville; a daughter, Theresa Lynn Broadway of South Carolina; and a beloved aunt Lou Broadway Honeycutt of Lewisville. He left cousins, Marta and Harvey Hayden, to whom he was devoted. Mr. Broadway was godfather to Ostara and Marcus Fansler, whom he loved dearly. BROWN
Mrs. Rachel Peddycord Brown, 80, of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, Nov . 3, 1999 at The Nursing Center at Oak Summit. She was born in Forsyth County May 1, 1919 to Samuel and Effie Hastings Peddycord. Mrs. Brown was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church and was retired from N.C. Baptist Hospital after 18 years of service in the nursing department. In addition t her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Raymond Brown, Sr.; two brothers, Samuel and Grady Peddycord; and three sisters, Edna Reavis, Pauline Fulton, and Louise Swaim. Survivors include three sisters, Opal Weavil of Arden, N.C., Lucille Sell of Walkertown, and Dorothy Sell of Winston-Salem; a loving mother of her grandchildren, Deanna Glascoe Brown; three grandchildren, Gerri Dee Peddle, Donna Brown Odrosky, and Jerry Raymond Brown, Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Hope Olivia Peddle, Jonathan Ray Peddle, and Sarah Ruth Odrosky; mother-in-law, Lema Hensley Brown; and many loving family members also survive. PINNACLE -- Lessie Maude Simmons Bryant, 86, widow of Sanford Ray Bryant, of 175 Whitaker Road, Box 340, Pinnacle, N.C., died Friday, November 5, 1999 at N.C. Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem. Mrs. Bryant was born in Surry County March 14, 1913 to John Bill and Della Mae Caudle Simmons. She worked with Avon for over 35 years, was a homemaker, and was a member of Simmons Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Janie Bryant Jones of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Gloria Bryant of Pinnacle, Bobby and Mildred Bryant of Pinnacle, Donald Bryant of the home, and Arthur and Becky Bryant of Stokesdale; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-five, great-grandchildren; three sisters, Cora Inman of Pilot Mountain, Alice Lewis of Mount Airy, and Rachel Danley of White Plains; and one brother, Jack Simmons of Pilot Mountain. Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by one son, Charles Bryant. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 7, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Simmons Grove Baptist Church by Rev. Stewart Mauck, Rev. Mary Lee Robinson Clark, 77, of 1221 Mint Street, passed away November 3, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Clark was born November 9, 1921 to the late Jessie Frazier and Alexander Belver. She retired from Thomasville Furniture Company in 1987, after 20 years of service. Mrs. Clark was a member of St. John C.M.E. Church for more than sixty years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Rover Clark. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Theresa Clark-Caldwell and Mrs. Earnestine Clark-Coplin; her twin brother, Joseph (Margaret) Holmes; four grandchildren, Mrs. Pamela (Michael) Brown, Dr. Patricia D. Bailey, Sterling Bailey, Jr., and Carla J. Clark; eight grandchildren; a loving sister-in-law, Mrs. Alberta L. Black; one brother-in-law, Pete (Evelyn) Clark; three nieces; two nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Lula Maggie Mae Royal Davis, 80, wife of Harold Davis, Sr. of Sunset Drive, North Wilkesboro, died Thursday, November 4, 1999 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Davis was born March 10, 1919 in Wilkes County to the late Thomas Newton and Donna Wagoner Royal. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in McGrady, she had worked for Peerless Hoisery for several years, and retired from Carolina Mirror. She was preceded in death by one brother, John Royal; and seven sister, Ellie Royal, Lillie Jenkins, Nora Perry, Anner Billings, Delcie Moose, Ruby Wagner, and Josephine Adams. Surviving, in addition to her husband of the home, are two step-sons, Lanny Davis of Charlotte and Harold Davis, Jr., of Fort Mill, S.C.; one step-daughter, Elizabeth Hammock of Charlotte; one brother-in-law, Beldin Adams of Wilkesboro; one step-granddaughter, Melissa Riddle of Charlotte; and several loving nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 1999 at Antioch Baptist Church in McGrady, with Rev. John Yates officiating. Mrs. Kathleen D. Fano, 56, of 5164 Huntcliff Trail, died Wednesday, November 3, 1999 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center following a brief illness. Mrs. Fano was a native of Jersey City, New Jersey where she was born August 20, 1943 to the late John and Mary McDermott Peters. She is survived by her husband, Frank Fano of the home; two daughters, Peggy and Stacey Fano both of Charlotte; one son, John Fano of Maui, Hawaii; three sisters, Marianna Smith, Dolores Chipko, and Patricia Goceljak; and one brother, Donald Peters all of New Jersey. Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Leo's Catholic Church by Father Richard Allen. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. GEHMAN
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA. -- H. Nevin Gehman, 79, of Ponte Verdra Beach, Fla., died November 4, 1999 at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., he was a graduate of Exeter Academy and Princeton University, where he was a first-team, All-American on the university's National Championship Lacrosse team in 1942. He served in the United States Naval Reserve during World War II, and was a commanding officer of two sub chasers, one in the Pacific and one in the Atlantic. He retired as a Lieutenant Senior Grade. Mr. Gehman and his wife, May Beth, moved to St. Augustine, Fla. from Manhasset, Long Island in 1985, when he retired from a career in marketing, advertising, and fund-raising in New York City. He had been a Senior Vice-President on a unit of the Interpublic Group of Companies, which was at that time the world's largest advertising and marketing firm. He was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in St. Augustine, where he had been a Vestry member, a lay-leader, and a chalice server. In 1995, he headed a fund-raising committee to complete major repairs to the church, in 1996 he chaired Trinity Church's 175th Anniversary Celebration Committee, and in 1997 and 1998 he was in charge of the fund-raising committee to restore the church's Aeolian-Skinner organ. Mr. Gehman was a trustee of the St. Augustine Historical Society, and had been that organization's representative to the Presidio Commission that planned the reconstruction of the Santo Domingo Redoudt and the completion of the Cubo Defense Wall. As a director of the St. Francis Soup Kitchen and Shelter, he was its volunteer fund-raiser for eight years, and subsequently for the migrant farm worker support program in Hastings. He was given a "12 Who Care" award by Television Channel 12 in Jacksonville for his work for the St. Francis House. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at Trinity Episcopal Church in St. Augustine with Reverend Jeffrey Batkin, rector, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery in St. Augustine. Friends may call at the chapel of Craig Funeral Home, St. Augustine from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m Monday. Mr. Gehman is survived by his wife, Sally Bet Cunningham Nevius Gehman of Ponte Verdra Beach and Washington, DC, whom he recently married; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Murell Weissinger of St. Augustine; two sons, Henry Moragne Gehman of Berkeley, Calif. and Richard Hart Gehman of Gainesville, Fla; one step-daughter, Kristina Nevius; one grandson; and one step-grandson. ARCADIA -- Mrs. Elva Opal Hege, 96, of Arcadia, passed away Thursday, Novemer 4, 1999. She was born April 13, 1903 in Davidson County to J. Shelton Link and Eunice Peacock Link. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. William Howard Hege; one sister; and five brothers. Surviving are a daughter, Elva Hege Miller of the home; several nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews. Mrs. Pauline Redding "Polly" Hennings, 77, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday evening at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Sept . 17, 1922 in Forsyth County to David Paul and Metta Roop Redding. She was a member of Harmony Grove United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Clarence N. Hennings of the home; two daughters, Janice H. Craig of Marblehead Rd., Clemmons and Connie A. Hennings of Hickory; four grandchildren, Amy Russell, Brad Craig, Chris Craig, and Karen Runyon-Cole; and two brothers, John Arthur Redding of Lewisville and Tommy Redding of Mocksville. Mr. Paul Johnson, 64, of 3100 Konnoah Dr., Winston-Salem, passed away Nov . 4, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended illness. He was born March 15, 1935 the son of David M. Johnson and Nezzie Johnson. He attended Anson County public school. Mr. Johnson was a Roofing Tech and he attended Christ Temple. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Nezzie Johnson; his son, Paul, Jr.; his wife, Elizabeth; three brothers, Jack, Rudolph, and Alex Johnson; and two sisters, Lonnie Mae Johnson and Cora M. Miller. Surviving are his daughter, Joyce Holmes; two sisters, Ernestine J. Horne (Lawyer) and Jestine (Ervin) Farley; two brothers, Rev. David Johnson (Martha) and Nathaniel Johnson (Crista); five grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends; and a special friend, Ms. Tanya Rice and her son, Justin. MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Fitzhugh Lavon (F.L.) (Fitz) Miller, 78, former resident of James St., Lexington, N.C., passed away Thursday, November 4, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. Mr. Miller lived the past 4 years at the home of his daughter, Sylvia Luffman, Meadowview Rd., Mocksville, N.C. Mr. Miller was born December 10, 1920 in Dillion, S.C. to the late Levi Gordon and Sarah Maude Bowen Miller. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Married July 27th 1940, Mary Hazel Eller Miller in 1995 and three brothers, Jackie Miller, Buddy Miller, and Paul Miller. Mr. Miller served our country during WWII and the Vietname War in the United States Army and United States Air Force, National Guard-312 Evacuation Hospital Unit in Winston-Salem, N.C. he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and WWII Victory Medal. F.L. retired from AT&T in Winston-Salem, after 31 years of service and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Lexington, but attended Jerusalem Baptist Church in Mocksville, N.C. Very active in the community, he was a member of the Lexington Masonic Lodge # 473-Scottish Rite and Charlotte Oasis Shrine Temple, Lexington VFW, Charter Member of WWII Memorial and AT&T Pioneer Club. More than anything, F.L. was a family man, he dearly loved spending time with his great-grandchildren, he was greatly loved and will be deeply missed. He is survived by two daughters, Sylvia M. Luffman and husband, Roby of Mocksville, N.C. and Dorothy M. Adams and husband, Tom of Lewisville; one son, Michael Lewis Miller and wife, Lisa of Lexington; five grandchildren, Renee Bradshaw, Tim Adams, Mike Luffman, Brandi Miller, and Darren Miller; three great-grandchildren, Bethany Bradshaw, Mary Kathryn Bradshaw, and Shealan Adams; four sisters, Adaline Openlander of Largo, Fla., Eva Williams of Salisbury, Ruth Miller of Salisbury, and Alice Fields of Spencer, N.C.; and a very special friend, Pat Gregory of Mocksville. Mr. Raymond Fredrick Miller, 96, of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, November 3, 1999 at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons. Mr. Miller was born May 12, 1903 in Forsyth County to Charles and Mary DeGraff Miller. He was a member of Hanes United Methodist Church and retired from RJR Tobacco Co. after 42 years of service. His wife, Ada Young Miller and two children, Sybil Raye Miller and Aubrey E. Miller preceded him in death. Surviving are, one daughter, Charlene Miller McDowell and husband, Thomas; one son, Norman F. "Buster" Miller and wife, Ann all of Winston-Salem; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Janice Miller of Florida. NOLAN
ELKIN -- Mrs. Mary Hazel Phillips Nolan, 93, of 601 Johnson Ridge Road, #125 Parkwood Place, Elkin, died Thursday, November 4, 1999, at Parkwood Place. Mrs. Nolan was born in Ashe County August 20, 1906 to the late James Payton and Minnie Hayes Phillips. Mrs. Nolan attended Appalachian State Teachers College and was a teacher for 40 years. She began teaching in East Bend, but later moved to Jonesville Elementary School where she taught for most of her teaching career. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael F. Nolan; two sisters; and two brothers. Surviving are a sister, Lucille P. Coker of Elkin; a brother, J. Wayne Phillips of Elkin; a sister-in-law, Sara D. Phillips of Mount Airy; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces, and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Jonesville, conducted by Dr. Maxwell Hill. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. to lie instate. Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Gardens in State Road. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Surry/Yadkin County, 1326 N. Main St., Mount Airy, N.C. 27030.
