NORMAN

MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Maude Eliza McCollum Norman, 86, passed away Thursday, November 4, 1999 at Central continuing Care after an extended illness. Mrs. Norman was born April 26, 1913 in Surry county to Lee and Mary Jane Owen McCollum. Mrs. Norman was retired from Hanes Knitware in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Norman was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joyce Monroe Norman; a sister, Josie McCollum Key; and three brothers, Roy, Gurnie, and Byron McCollum. Surviving Mrs. Norman is a step-son, Kent Norman of Pfafftown; a half-sister, Nancy (Henry) McCreary, and step-mother, Alma McCollum all of Pinnacle. Also surviving is a step-granddaughter, Mandy Norman (Van) Sullivan, and two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services for Mrs. Norman will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. at New Home United Methodist church, Saturday, November 6, 1999 with the Rev. Ben Sheperd and the Rev. Sarah Kalish officiating. The body will lie instate from 10:30 until time for the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorial may be made to Surry/Yadkin Hospice, 1326 N. Main St., Mount Airy, N.C. 27030.

ROBERTSON

MT. AIRY -- Thelma Frye Robertson, 87, formerly of Mt. Airy, and the widow of J.M. (Peg) Frye, passed away Friday morning at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Thelma had been a very active member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church in the 40's, and for a number of years she was on the staff of the Baptist's Children's Home of North Carolina. Recently she had been residing at the Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. She is survived by one son, James M. Frye of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Mae Arnder of High Point; one brother, M.B. Williamson of Mt. Airy; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive guests at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy on Sunday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service, conducted by Rev. Robert McCrary, will be held at Moody Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 8, 1999 and will be followed by internment at Oakdale cemetery.

SANDS

PINE HALL -- Mrs. Pauline S. McCandless Sands, 77, of Route 1, Pine Hall, died Thursday, November 4, 1999 at Britthaven of Madison. She retired from Tultex and was a member of Willow Oak Baptist Church in Walnut Cove. Mrs. Sands was preceded in death by her husband, Noel Sands; a daughter, Nancy Sands Kendrick; brothers, Ray McCandless, Lloyd McCandless; and several step-brothers and sisters. Surviving are one son, Bobby Sands and wife, Carol of Mayodan; three sisters, Ruby M. Manring of High Point, Dorothy M. Griffin of Eden, and Nelda M. Flake of Whitsett; a brother, Harold McCandless of High Point; three grandchildren, Todd Kendrick, Dana Claybrook and husband, Mike, and Allen Sands; one great-grandchild, Cassie Claybrook; and a special friend, Walter Gunn. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 1999 at Willow Oak Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, November 6, 1999 at Colonial Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Sands, 142 Dan Valley Road, Mayodan, N.C. 27027.

BATES

KERNERSVILLE -- Mr. Michael Shawn "Budda" Bates, 31, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001. He was born Dec. 13, 1969, in Forsyth County to Johnny Allen and Rebecca Best Bates. Mr. Bates was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his mother, Rebecca Best Bates Dexter of Kernersville; his father, Johnny Allen Bates; a son, Blake Alan Hutchins of Advance; his former wife, Patricia Hutchins of Advance; and a special friend, Marie Collie of Clemmons. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Otis Clampitt. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Bethany AME. Zion Church cemetery in Farmington. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

CHATMON

Mrs. Miriam Alspaugh Chatmon, 65, of 2460 Norman Shoaf Road died Friday, Jan. 2, 2001, at her residence. She was born July 31, 1935, in Forsyth County to Carlton G. Alspaugh Sr. and Jessie Kimel Alspaugh. Mrs. Chatmon was a member of Faith Missionary Alliance Church. She graduated from City Memorial Hospital Nursing School and was an industrial nurse for AT&T before her retirement in 1986. She was preceded in death by her parents, by a sister, Rebecca Tallerday, and by two brothers, Carlton G. Alspaugh Jr. and Leroy K. Alspaugh. Surviving are her husband, James E. "Bill" Chatmon; a daughter, Catherine L. Chatmon; six sisters, Sara Chamblee of Walkertown, Rachel Haskell and husband Willis of Lilburn, Ga., Mary Parrish and husband William D. of Norfolk, Va., Martha Copeland and husband Gordon G. of Clemmons, Donna Whitley and husband Richard and Geraldine Nifong and husband Harold of Winston-Salem; two very special friends, Karen Cain and Bertha Jones; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Faith Missionary Alliance Church with the Rev. Michael Gates and Dr. Howard Wilburn officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and requests that memorials be made to Great Commission Fund of Faith Missionary Alliance Church, 1077 Gum Tree Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107 or Piedmont Baptist College, 716 Franklin St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. CHILDRESS

Mr. Donnie Wayne Childress, 57, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County, the son of William Marion and Edith Pauline Bowman Childress, and was a carpenter for more than 30 years. Mr. Childress was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his mother, Edith Bowman Childress of Winston-Salem; a sister, Patsy Porter of Walkertown; maternal grandmother Addie Bowman of Winston-Salem; and a niece, Carla Smith of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at White Oak Grove Church of the Living God, Kernersville by the Rev. Annie Belle Bowman. There will be no public visitation. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall is in charge of arrangements.

CHISHOLM

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Mr. Willie James Chisholm, 56, of 177 Howard St., formerly of Winston-Salem, known to family and friends as "Butch," passed away Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Millard Fillmore Hospital unexpectedly. He was born Dec. 8, 1944, in Winston-Salem, the son of the late Collie Love and Richmond Chisholm. He attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools, was employed at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., #90 cafeteria and in Buffalo as a chef cook. He was employed at the time of his death at Delaware Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Buffalo. He is survived by four aunts, Lillie Watkins, Allie Love and Nora Love, all of Winston-Salem, and Lola L. Bates of Washington, D.C.; two uncles, William Love of Winston-Salem and Elder Andrew Love of Milwaukee, Wis.; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in the chapel at the Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. James E. Gaskins officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. CLINARD

HIGH POINT -- Mr. Garland Clio "Buck" Clinard, 95, of 608 Oakview Road died Jan. 6, 2001, at High Point Health Care. He was born Jan. 18, 1905, in Guilford County, the son of Andrew Clemmons and Iris Hammer Clinard. He was a carpenter, a charter member of the Oakview Lions Club, a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church and the men's Sunday school class. On Oct. 12, 1933, he married the former Anne Clodfelter who survives of the home. Also surviving are a son, Dudley B. Clinard of Burlington; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A private graveside service will be held by the Rev. Roland Jones. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Sechrest Funeral Home in High Point. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lebanon United Methodist Church, 237 Idol Drive, High Point, NC 27262 or to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

GILBERT

PFAFFTOWN -- Mrs. Frances Anderson Gilbert, 69, a devoted wife, mother, stepmother and sister died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Jan. 3, 1932, in Loudon County, Tenn., to Claude and Pearl Kirby Silvey. Mrs. Gilbert retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 35 years of service and was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Samuel Moore Gilbert of the home; a daughter, Dorothy Anderson Shuford and husband Don of Rural Hall; her mother; two sisters, Margaret Wiggins of Lenoir City, Tenn., and Hazel Fritts of Winchester, Ind.; a brother, William Silvey of Lenoir City; two stepsons, Dan and David Gilbert; three stepdaughters, Caroline Hall, Elizabeth Watkins and Sarah Lee; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Hayden Wiggins. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at the Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. J. Dwight Cartner officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, Vienna-Dozier Road, Pfafftown, NC 27040 or to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

HUNT

Samuel Marcus Hunt III, "Little Mark," died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born June 28, 2000, in Forsyth County to Samuel Marcus Hunt II and Tina Louise Kirk. Surviving are his parents, of the home; two brothers, Daniel and Thomas Kirk, of the home; grandparents and stepgrandparents, Pamela and Monie Burrow, of King, Homer and Diann Watson and Linda and Kenny Burton, of Winston-Salem and Jane Hunt of Pinnacle; also great-grandparents; and many other family and friends. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Parklawn Memorial Gardens by Rev. David Woolard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

LEWIS

Mrs. Hazel McDade Lewis, 88, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the Triad United Methodist Home. She was born Aug. 15, 1912, to the late John C. and Ellie McAdams McDade of Orange County. Mrs. Lewis was a graduate of Appalachian State University and taught in Orange County and Lexington schools. After moving to Winston-Salem, she became a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church where she was active in the Alma Nunn Class and the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Craig Lewis, and her son, Carlos Edwin Lewis. Survivors include a son, Lee Craig Lewis Jr. and wife, Carole, of Waxhaw; a grandson, Andrew Craig Lewis and wife, Angela, of Monroe; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ruth Kaiser and husband, Richard, of Paola, Kan.; three nieces, Anne Evans of Lawrence, Kan., Susan Young of Laplata, Md., and Joe Westbrook of Efland; and a nephew, Frank P. McDade of Hillsborough. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Lisa Wishon. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Greenwood cemetery in Belmont. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

NUNN

PILOT MOUNTAIN -- Mr. Clyde Robert Nunn, 83, of Flippin's Bed and Breakfast, Main St., Pilot Mountain passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Nursing Center at Oak Summit, Winston-Salem. Mr. Nunn was born Feb. 1, 1917, in Stokes County to Lamus Larrel and Nannie Sue Collins Nunn. He was retired from the Greensboro News and Record and of the Primitive Baptist faith. He is survived by a special niece, Christine Sands of Pilot Mountain; two special nephews, Charles Moss and Ray Moss of Westfield; several other nieces and nephews; and three special friends, Donna Nelson, Charlotte Adkins and Cathy Sells. Funeral services will be 2 p.m Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Dewayne Sands and Brother Don Collins. Burial will follow in the Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Sunday evening at the funeral home. The Nunn family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

REDD

Mrs. Helen Solomon Redd, 75, of 2531 Kingsgate Drive passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Winston-Salem on May 13, 1925, the daughter of the late Oliver and Lucile Brice Solomon. She was a graduate of Atkins High School and received further training at Russell Business College. Mrs. Redd was a faithful member of St. Peter's World Outreach Center since 1987 where she was a member of the mother's board, greeter's auxiliary and completed all school of ministry classes (New Members Foundation, Ministry of HELPS and ambassador leadership classes). Her civic involvement was with the Daughters of Isis and Sethos Court #105. She was a retired employee of the Winston-Salem Police Department as a school crossing guard. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John Solomon and William Solomon. Mrs. Redd is survived by her husband, George S. Redd of the home; four sons, Oliver Donell Redd (Judy) of Clemmons, George Spurgeon Redd III (Brenda), Robert Anthony Redd (Linda) and Carl Brunson Redd (Rosalind) all of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Christopher Donell Redd (Catina) of Greensboro, George Spurgeon Redd IV of Manassas, Va., Crystal Donnita Redd of Raleigh, Robert Anthony Redd Jr., Carla Rashawn Jones, Carl Brunson Redd II and Cameron Bradley Redd all of Winston-Salem; a great-grandchild, Kristina J'nei Redd of Greensboro; five sisters, Mary S. Roberts of Newark, N.J., Deloris S. Moseley of Largo, Md., Dr. Marie S. Williamson (Curtis) of Greensboro, Louella S. Nelson (William) of Fort Washington, Md. and Cleopatra L. Solomon of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Robert O. Solomon of Newark, N.J., Vardell Solomon and Danny O. Solomon of Winston-Salem; 35 nieces and nephews, including two devoted nieces, Frankie S. Williams and Ossie C. Hairston; several great-nieces and nephews; other relatives; and many friends. Mrs. Redd leaves an endearing and enduring legacy. Family and friends will be reminded of her unique creativity and artistic abilities by the many beautiful, practical and personalized gifts she made and shared with each of them. Her children will especially remember her unwavering faith in God, her strong sense of family, her wise counsel and her everyday examples of moral rectitude. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at St. Peter's World Outreach Center with Dr. J.C. Hash Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Peter's World Outreach Center. (Russell)

SEDLACEK

CLEMMONS -- Mr. James G. Sedlacek, 63, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Sept. 16, 1937, in Kansas City, Kan., to Albert Cyril and Mabel Esther Lamb Sedlacek. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Sedlacek is survived by his wife of 42 years, Pauline F. Collins Sedlacek; four children and their spouses, Paula D. Sedlacek, Steve and wife Kim Sedlacek, Jeff and wife Julie Sedlacek, and John and wife Tracey Sedlacek; and six adoring grandchildren, Jim, Matt, LeAnn, Jeffrey, Emily Kate and David. Mr. Sedlacek lived in Clemmons for 21 years and worked as a sales representative for Heidleberg USA. He will truly be missed by friends and family. A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Holy Family Catholic Church by Father Frank O'Rourke. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Sunday evening at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel.

BARNETT

ELKIN -- Mrs. Virginia Anne Craver Barnett, 81, of West Main Street died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born May 19, 1919, in Boonville to the late David Henry and Catherine Baity Craver. Mrs. Barnett was retired from the Elkin City Schools as a librarian and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She also was a member of Galloway Memorial Episcopal Church in Elkin, where she was active with the E.C.W. and other womens' organizations in Elkin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Das Kelley Barnett on June 22, 1973. Surviving are her three children, Martha Anne Sallee, David Kelley Barnett and Mary Elizabeth Barnett, all of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Her funeral service will be held noon Wednesday at the Galloway Memorial Episcopal Church by the Vicar Joan Vella and the Father Frank McKenzie. Burial will follow in the Boonville cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Galloway Memorial Episcopal Church in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Wildlife Fund, The Audubon Society, the Sierra Club, the Ark Family Services in Elkin, or to Galloway Memorial Episcopal Church. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the family.

BURNS

GREENSBORO -- Mrs. Katie P. Burns, 93, widow of Lyndon P. Burns, formerly of 3150 Burke Mill Road died Jan. 4, 2001, at Moses Cone Extended Care in Greensboro. She was in the care of her niece Mrs. Kay Broadhurst Chesnutt of Greensboro. Mrs. Burns was born to the late James W. Powers and Fannie Hammond Powers of Kershaw, S.C. She graduated from Gastonia High School, Gastonia. A member of the First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, she was a member of the Mizpah Sunday School Class and extremely active in all facets of church life. She was the manager and buyer of hosiery at Anchor Department Store. She was employed in the Ladies Dress Department at Thalheimers Department Store. Survivors include one sister, Mildred Powers Holland Saverance of Garden City, S.C., and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Oakwood Memorial Park in High Point. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 501 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Forbis and Dick Funeral Service of Greensboro is handling the arrangements.
