BUTNER

Fred Washington Butner Jr., 73, of Winston-Salem, died Jan. 6, 2001, at his home of complications resulting from pulmonary fibrosis. He loved and was devoted to his family, his church and his profession. Mr. Butner was born Dec. 15, 1927, in Winston-Salem to Fred W. Butner Sr. and Katharine Pritchard Butner. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and N.C. State University, and was prominent in the practice of architecture locally for 50 years. He started his architectural firm in 1952 and designed over 300 projects in North Carolina and the Southeast. He was the architect for over 100 school and college projects in Forsyth County and Northwest North Carolina, including multiple buildings at Forsyth Technical Community College, Surry Community College, West Forsyth High School, and many others. He also served as architect for numerous churches, governmental complexes, and commercial, office, bank and residential projects in the area, including the Forsyth County Hall of Justice, and branch offices for First Federal Savings and Loan, Piedmont Federal Savings and Loan, among many others. Mr. Butner was active in civic and professional affairs on the local, state and national levels. He was honored by being named a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects in 1974, and served as president of both the N.C. American Institute of Architects and the N.C. Licensing Board for Architects. He also served as president of the Winston-Salem Lions Club, the Winston-Salem Engineers Club and the Forsyth Country Club and was active in those organizations for many years. He was a lifelong devoted and active member of Burkhead United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees and held numerous other official and unofficial positions, including chairman of the Official Board and Trustees. He was the architect for Burkhead's present church complex on Silas Creek Parkway. Mr. Butner was an avid golfer for many years and enjoyed playing various courses throughout the Southeast with his wife and their friends. He had retired from golfing in recent years due to his health. Mr. Butner was preceded in death by his son, Fred Raymond Butner, who died in 1992. Surviving are Martha Hinkle Butner, his devoted wife of over 50 years; two sons, Blain B. Butner and wife Peggy of Arlington, Va., and David E. Butner of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Sarah T. Butner of Arlington, Va.; one sister, Ann B. Chipman of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Burkhead United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001. Mr. Butner will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors at Voglers on Reynolda Road from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8. DAVIS

PINE KNOLL SHORES -- Mrs. Martha H. Davis, 63, a former resident of Kernersville, died Jan. 7, 2001, at the Wake Medical Center. She was born on Feb. 10, 1937, to the late Ruth and Charles Heightshoe of Winston-Salem. Sue worked as a registered nurse for hospitals in Forsyth County and later as an industrial nurse for Burlington Industries in Kernersville. She moved to Pine Knoll Shores in 1986 and was active in the First United Methodist Church of Morehead City. Sue was preceded in death by her sister, Luann Thompson, and is survived by her sister, Alice Willard. She is also survived by her three children, Martha Davis Morton of Oxford, Edgar F. Davis II of Stuttgart, Germany, and Alan D. Davis of Fairfax Station, Va.; and her six grandchildren. A memorial service followed by family visitation will be held at Voglers Funeral Home, Main Street, in Winston-Salem at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 900 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28557.

GANT

WALKERTOWN -- Mrs. Marilyn Reavis Gant, 56, of Camp Betty Hastings Road died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a period of declining health. Mrs. Gant was born in Forsyth County on April 8, 1944, the daughter of the late Clayton Harvey and Ruby Harris Reavis. She was of the Baptist Faith. She had worked for Olympic Packaging Co., and had been a waitress at Trenwest Restaurant, both in Winston-Salem. Surviving are three daughters, Rhonda Mabe, Lisa Dawn Mabe and friend Mike Soffera, all of Winston-Salem, and Melissa Hedgcock of Walkertown; one son Michael Mabe and friend Peggy Tesh of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Michael Shane Mabe, Melissa Nicole Hedgcock and Brandon Miles Mock; one sister Frances Steen of Kernersville; one brother Donald Reavis of Southport; and a friend Laurie Mock of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall by the Rev. Tim Gammons. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The Gant family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and request that memorials be directed to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

MAYS

KERNERSVILLE -- Frances Mays, 68, of Kernersville, died Jan. 6, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Mays was preceded in death by her husband, Drewey T. Mays. She is survived by her sons, Drewey A. Mays of Morganton, Texas, and Roger T. Mays and wife Kim of Irving, Texas; daughter Diane Mays of Walkertown; sister Betty Johnson and husband Cecil of Aberdeen; grandchildren Allen B. Mays, Ashley N. Mays and Wesley T. Mays; and very dear friend Lisa Crisp. A graveside service will be held at Alamance Memorial Park at 11 a.m. Tuesday . Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, N. Elm Street.

MILLER

CLEMMONS -- Mr. Milton C. Miller, 89, of Clemmons died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001. Mr. Miller was born in Rougemont on Dec. 31, 1911, to Robert Lee and Minnie Gates Miller. He was raised in Orange County on a farm and enjoyed visiting there in his retirement and enjoyed hunting. He worked 36 years for McLean Trucking Co. with over 10 million miles accident free. He was a member of New Bethal United Methodist Church in Rougemont and was in the 65th Infantry Division, the same as General Patton, during World War II. Surviving are his wife Agnes Miller of the home; son Milton K. Miller and wife Libby of Lewisville; two grandchildren, Russell and Cameron; and a sister Eva Kirkland of Durham. A funeral service will be held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Conner and the Rev. Otis Clampitt. Intombment will follow in the mausoleum at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to New Bethal United Methodist Church, 8612 Bunny Rd., Rougemont, NC 27572.

OATES

Mrs. Evelyn Hamrick Oates, 97, died on Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at The Fitzgerald Health Care Center in Arbor Acres. Mrs. Oates was born on Oct. 31, 1903, in Ruth to the late Charles and Minnie Hamrick. Mrs. Oates resided in Greensboro most of her life, attending Women's College (UNCG) and retiring from the Greensboro City School System. She was a cafeteria manager at Lindley Junior and Kiser Junior High Schools. To know her was to love her, and she will be greatly missed. She attended the First Baptist Church, Greensboro, where she was a member for 65 years. Her husband James G. Oates Sr. preceded her in death in 1963. Mrs. Oates was also preceded in death by her two sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her daughter Dorothy Bowden and husband Don of Greensboro, and by her son James G. Oates Jr. and wife Ann of Bermuda Run; eight grandchildren, Don Bowden Jr. (Linda), Bob Bowden, David Bowden (Susan), Kathy Brown, Carol Connery, Kim Caudle (Ron), Jami Morgan (John) and Chris Oates; stepgranddaughters Amanda Black and Kelly Cozart; and twelve great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted by her grandsons, the Rev. Don Bowden Jr. and the Rev. David Bowden, in the Chapel of First Baptist Church, Greensboro, at noon on Monday, Jan. 8, 2001. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery. Donations of memory may be made to First Baptist Church, 1000 W. REDD

Mrs. Helen Solomon Redd, 75, of 2531 Kingsgate Drive passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Winston-Salem on May 13, 1925, the daughter of the late Oliver and Lucile Brice Solomon. She was a graduate of Atkins High School and received further training at Russell Business College. Mrs. Redd was a faithful member of St. Peter's World Outreach Center since 1987 where she was a member of the mother's board, greeter's auxiliary and completed all school of ministry classes (New Members Foundation, Ministry of HELPS and ambassador leadership classes). Her civic involvement was with the Daughters of Isis and Sethos Court #105. She was a retired employee of the Winston-Salem Police Department as a school crossing guard. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John Solomon and William Solomon. Mrs. Redd is survived by her husband, George S. Redd of the home; four sons, Oliver Donell Redd (Judy) of Clemmons, George Spurgeon Redd III (Brenda), Robert Anthony Redd (Linda) and Carl Brunson Redd (Rosalind) all of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Christopher Donell Redd (Catina) of Greensboro, George Spurgeon Redd IV of Manassas, Va., Crystal Donnita Redd of Raleigh, Robert Anthony Redd Jr., Carla Rashawn Jones, Carl Brunson Redd II and Cameron Bradley Redd all of Winston-Salem; a great-grandchild, Kristina J'nei Redd of Greensboro; five sisters, Mary S. Roberts of Newark, N.J., Deloris S. Moseley of Largo, Md., Dr. Marie S. Williamson (Curtis) of Greensboro, Louella S. Nelson (William) of Fort Washington, Md. and Cleopatra L. Solomon of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Robert O. Solomon of Newark, N.J., Vardell Solomon and Danny O. Solomon of Winston-Salem; 35 nieces and nephews, including two devoted nieces, Frankie S. Williams and Ossie C. Hairston; several great-nieces and nephews; other relatives; and many friends. Mrs. Redd leaves an endearing and enduring legacy. Family and friends will be reminded of her unique creativity and artistic abilities by the many beautiful, practical and personalized gifts she made and shared with each of them. Her children will especially remember her unwavering faith in God, her strong sense of family, her wise counsel and her everyday examples of moral rectitude. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at St. Peter's World Outreach Center with Dr. J.C. Hash Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Oliver Wayne Snow, 66, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at his residence. He was born Aug. 20, 1934, in Surry County to the late Lonnie and Nannie Wood Snow. Mr. Snow retired from the Sara Lee Corp. with more than 30 years of service. His wife Marie Modell Snow preceded him in death as well as two brothers, Ulysses and John Snow. Surviving are three daughters, Lynn Martin (Tim), Sharon Craver (Larry) and Karen Snow (Darrell White), all of Winston-Salem; three sons, Ricky Allen and Wayne Snow both of the home, and Ulysses "Peanut" Snow of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Terry, Joni, Cristy, Jeremy, Brittany and Justin; two brothers, Chester Snow and P.D. Snow both of Dobson; and one sister, Carrie Jenkins of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Snow was a beloved father who will be greatly missed and was a friend to all.

WELBORN

Mr. James Vestal Welborn, 91, of 3030 Marmion Street died Jan. 7, 2001, at Silas Creek Manor. He was born Dec. 1, 1909, in Cycle to the late Thomas H. Welborn Sr. and Lelia Myers Welborn. He was a member of Konnoak Hills Methodist Church. Mr. Welborn retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in 1973. He was preceded in death by a son James R. Welborn, two brothers and two sisters. Surviving are his wife, Vivian Myers Welborn; one son, Tommy V. Welborn and wife Joan of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tom and Jack Welborn, both of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Martha Lineback of Winston-Salem and Doris Jones of Asheville. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Randy Sherrill will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association Carolina Piedmont N.C. BARBEE

Mr. Charles Ralph Barbee, 78, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born March 2, 1922, in Guilford County to Edgar Buddy and Mattie Charles Barbee. Mr. Barbee was a member of First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem and the Philadelphia Sunday school class. He served in the Army/Air Force Far Eastern Squadron Command during World War II, was a member of the American Legion for over 49 years, past three-term commander of the Clyde Post 55, district 18 commander for three terms, department vice commander for one term, served on the national committee seven times and many department committees. Mr. Barbee had retired from Norman Stockton with 43 years of service. Preceding Mr. Barbee in death was a daughter, Becky Barbee. Survivors include his wife, Irene Williams Barbee of the home; two sons, Charles Ronald Barbee of Cook, S.C., and Buddy Lee Barbee of Winston-Salem; a brother, Edward F. Barbee and wife Alease of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Georgia Barbee of the home and Mildred Jordan of Smithfield; four grandchildren, Butch Barbee, Ron Barbee and Becky Vandergrift, all of Charleston, S.C., and Kristen Leigh Barbee of Winston-Salem; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at First Baptist Church in the Reich Chapel by the Rev. Henry Stokes. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Restoration Fund.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Dicie Virginia (Russell) Botts entered into eternal rest Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by her son, Donald Wharton; her sisters, Patricia Wharton and Helen Eaton; and brothers, Franklin Agnew, James Oliver Sr. and Paul Wharton. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, James Russell; three daughters, Fredrika Williams and Victoria Glenn of Winston-Salem and Tamara (Larry) Phillips of East Bend; four sons, James Oliver (Nancy Wharton of Randolph, Mass., William Thomas Botts of Oakland, Calif., James H. Botts of Washington, D.C. and Garrison (Kim) Botts of Sacramento, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Monroe C. (Joyce) Wharton of East Bend, William (Tina) Wharton of Mocksville and Richard Wharton of Chesapeake, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2000, at the McGuire Funeral Home, 7400 Georgia Ave., N.W. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Glenns Chapel in East Bend with the Rev. Robert Lawten officiating and Garrison Botts offering the eulogy. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church and other times at the residence of Tamara Phillips, 4804 Wrenn Road, East Bend. BUCHANAN

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mrs. Huey K. Buchanan, 93, passed away Dec. 31, 2000, at St. Catherines Laboure Manor in Jacksonville. She was born in Yadkinville in 1907 and had resided in Jacksonville since 1970. Her son, Harold G. Buchanan and grandchildren, Michelle, Alan and Stephen Buchanan and Amy Buchanan Vann; son Roy L. Buchanan and grandson Michael Buchanan survive her. She is also survived by several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 4 in the chapel of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home with interment in Jacksonville Memory Gardens.

Mr. James Henry "Sonny" Crawford of 752 Aureole St. passed away Sunday at his home. He was born in Winston-Salem March 22, 1930, to Mrs. Bertha Tucker and the late Fred H. Wagner. He attended the local public schools and was retired from Spirit Construction Co. At an early age, he was baptized in and attended First Waughtown Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gloria Jean Crawford, of the home; his mother, Mrs. Bertha Tucker; his stepfather, Mr. James Tucker; his stepmother, Mrs. Roberta Wagner; two daughters, Mrs. Elaine Brockman and Mrs. Sandra Crews; two sons, James Crawford Jr. and Tyrone Wilson; four stepdaughters, Mrs. Deborah Speaks, Mrs. Penny Small, Mrs. Dannie Mae Galloway and Mrs. Rebecca Cain; a stepson, Mr. Kerry Thompson, all of Winston-Salem; five sisters, Mrs. Janice W. Ross, Ms. Jeri Wagner, the Rev. Margaret (George) Johnson and Mrs. Lue-Ann (Billy) Lucas, all of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Ernestine T. (Lemuel) Morris of Danville, Va.; three brothers, Mr. William E. Tucker and Mr. David Tucker and Mr. Lewis G. (Sonalia) Tucker, of Los Angeles; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a devoted friend, Mr. George Staley; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at First Waughtown Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Bishop officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home. The procession will assemble and leave from the home, 752 Aureole St., en route to the church at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Johnson-Howard-Robinson Home of Memory is in charge of all services and arrangements.
