CHINN

Today we say goodbye to our beloved father, Elijah Chinn. He passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born March 27, 1926, to the late Cornelius and Minnie Bell Chinn in Edgefield, S.C. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II prior to dedicating his life to our Almighty Creator and becoming one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He worked hard each and every day that God gave him. A self-educated and skilled electrician, plumber and landscaper, he proudly operated Chinn's Maintenance until the time of his death. A masterful gardener, Daddy enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor with his family, neighbors and friends. His many acts of kindness and generosity have touched many lives and warmed many hearts. He is survived by his wife, Nan Chinn of the home; a daughter, Elisa Chinn-Gary and husband, Ernest, of Charlotte; sons Andre Chinn and Philip Chinn of the home; stepdaughter Pamela Little; stepsons Gilbert Haile and wife Jennifer and Darren Haile of New Jersey; sisters Anna Belle Chinn Lee of Edgefield, S.C., and Mary Simpkins of Yucca Valley, Calif.; father-in-law Joseph Johnson; five stepgrandchildren; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Our family will privately memorialize our dearly departed loved one. We respectfully request that all sentiments of sympathy be made by card.

CONTOS

Mr. John Nicholas Contos Sr., 77, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. Mr. Contos was born July 31, 1923, in Forsyth County to Nicholas John and Ethel Contos. In addition to his parents, Mr. Contos was preceded in death by his wife, Doris S. Contos, and two sisters, Kathryn C. Fields and Zoe C. Cooper. Surviving are a son, Skip Contos Jr. and wife Pam of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Karen Fulcher and husband Hugh of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Helen Rike and Nicky Lane; grandsons Thomas E. Fulcher and wife Susan and Chip Contos III and wife Lori; a granddaughter, Annette Lankford; and four great-granddaughters. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park, with the Rev. David Fouche officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. DAVIS

PINE KNOLL SHORES -- Mrs. Martha H. Davis, 63, a former resident of Kernersville, died Jan. 7, 2001, at the Wake Medical Center. She was born on Feb. 10, 1937, to the late Ruth and Charles Heightshoe of Winston-Salem. Sue worked as a registered nurse for hospitals in Forsyth County and later as an industrial nurse for Burlington Industries in Kernersville. She moved to Pine Knoll Shores in 1986 and was active in the First United Methodist Church of Morehead City. Sue was preceded in death by her sister, Luann Thompson, and is survived by her sister, Alice Willard. She is also survived by her three children, Martha Davis Morton of Oxford, Edgar F. Davis II of Stuttgart, Germany, and Alan D. Davis of Fairfax Station, Va.; and her six grandchildren. A memorial service followed by family visitation will be held at Voglers Funeral Home, Main Street, in Winston-Salem at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 900 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28557.

DOUGLAS

Mrs. Ellen Douglas, 72, the widow of Mr. Herman C. Douglas of Waughtown Street, died Jan. 8, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Harnett County to Zeb Wyatt and Ollie Hester Turner on March 23, 1928. Mrs. Douglas was a member of Waughtown Baptist Church and also a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of Western Electric. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Dorene Gourley of Walkertown; four children, Donald and wife Wanda Douglas, Cynthia Douglas, Annette Douglas and Michael and wife Terry Douglas, all of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Eddie Douglas, Christy Fulp, Mark Smith and Michael Douglas Jr.; and six great-grandchildren, Michael, Ashley and Cyrus Fulp, Justin and Jordan Smith and Tyler Douglas. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Dr. Bud Owen officiating. Burial will be at Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 25086 or the American Diabetes. GILLEY

MOUNT AIRY -- Mr. John W. "Johnny" Gilley, 54, the husband of Mrs. Sherry Nichols Gilley went to be with Jesus Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Gilley was born April 9, 1946, in Surry County, the son of the late Edgar James and Octavie Harris Gilley. Mr. Gilley was a retired painter and member of the Midway Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sherry Nichols Gilley of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, John David and Amber Gilley of Mount Airy; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nichole and Jeremiah Morris of Dobson and Suzanne and Isreal Gwyn of Mount Airy; two stepsons and spouses, Darel and Jodie Hodges and Darin and Sharon Hodges of Mount Airy; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Calvin and Alene Gilley of Mount Airy; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Inez and Grady Simmons of Jonesville, Nellie Hunter of Mount Airy, Peggy and Dennis Ward of Cary, Helen Collins of Newport News, Va., and Mildred and John George of Raleigh; and several special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gilley was preceded in death by a brother, Wade Gilley. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy by John David Gilley and the Rev. Jack Anderson. Burial will follow in the Holly Springs Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

JOHNSON

Mrs. Dorothy Wooten Johnson, 69, of 508 Beth Ave. died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Yadkinville to Herman B. and Betty Booe Wooten. Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Yadkinville High School and City Hospital School of X-Ray Technology. She was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Lois Wooten Cranfill. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Ronal E. Johnson of the home; a daughter, Lisa Gail Johnson of Winston-Salem; a son, Ronal E. Johnson Jr. of Yadkinville; a granddaughter, Betty Jo Johnson of Winston-Salem; a sister, Margaret Wooten McNeely of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Billy L. Wooten of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by Dr. Gary McCollough and Dr. Ray Hamilton. Entombment will be at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Konnoak Baptist Church, 400 McLean Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

CLAYTON -- Amelia Katherine Law, one day short of her sixth-month birthday, died at home Dec. 23, 2000. A memorial Mass and interment were held Dec. 30, 2000, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Raleigh. Amelia's parents are Mark and Kate Law; paternal grandparents Gerald and Elaine Law of Raleigh; maternal grandparents Frank and Stephanie Dorsch of Winston-Salem; and maternal great-grandmother Violette H. LEWELLYN

WALKERTOWN -- Mr. Barry Francis Lewellyn, 60, won his battle with cancer on Jan. 9, 2001. Mr. Lewellyn was born July 1, 1940, in Mecklenburg County to Maurice and Frances Young Lewellyn. He was a distribution supervisor for Piedmont Natural Gas and attended Rosebud Christian Church. He was an avid trap shooter. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Lewellyn. Surivors include his wife, Michelle E. Lewellyn of the home; his mother, Frances Lewellyn of Clemmons; three daughters, Elizabeth Anne Lewellyn of the home, Marsha (Lindsey) Hamm of Dallas, Texas, and Bridget (David) Hofmann of Winston-Salem; two sons, Keith Lewellyn of Clearwater, Fla., and Mark Lewellyn of California; sisters Carolyn (Willard) Harrison of Winston-Salem and Susan (John) Schramm of Clemmons; brothers Phillip (Thelma) Lewellyn of Sumter, S.C., Leroy (Diane) Lewellyn of Lexington and David (Camilla) Lewellyn of Greensboro; and a grandchild, Megan Lewellyn. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Rosebud Christian Church, with the Rev. Louis Locke and the Rev. Jerry Benfield officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. MURPHY

EAST BEND -- Mr. John Mahlon "J.M." Murphy, 77, of 3905 Union Hill Road passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Yadkin County to John Richard and Cora Taylor Murphy Oct. 18, 1923. Mr. Murphy was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1963 and was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Gennett Cranford Murphy of the home; a foster daughter, Sandra "Sissy" J. Norman; a son-in-law, William Norman; and a grandson, Mason Norman all of Yadkinville; two brothers, Harold Murphy and Junior Murphy of East Bend; and several very special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by Elder David Edwards and Elder Vance Jones. Burial will follow in the Allen-Johnson Family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

MYERS

ADVANCE -- Mrs. Annie Williams Myers, 88, of Jetry Lane died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Eaton Funeral Chapelm with the Rev. Richard Whiteheart officiating. Interment will be in Bixby Presbyterian Church cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Mrs. Myers was born Jan. 14, 1911, in Davie County to the late Robert Hugh and Lula Barney Williams. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Bixby Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jetry Myers; a granddaughter, Susan Wands; and two brothers, Robert and Wiley Williams. Survivors include two sons, Stacy (Carroll) Myers of Mocksville and Lester (Velda) Myers of Advance; six grandchildren, Lisa Myers, Dean Myers, Scotty Wands, Karen Guiton, David Myers and Julie Myers; and three great-grandchildren.

PARKS

Mrs. Thelma Mae Long Parks, 92, formerly of 1805 Old Salisbury Road died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Salemtowne Moravian Retirement Community. She was born July 1, 1908, in Hamilton County, Tenn., to William Daniel and Stella Atcheley Long. Mrs. Parks had been a member of Advent Moravian Church since 1924 and in 1925 she married her husband, John Roy Parks, who preceded her in death. She worked in the grocery business with her husband and also in retail sales in Winston-Salem. Surviving are a son, William D. "Bill" Parks and wife Jayne of Lewisville; three grandsons, William Roy Parks and Brian Gray Parks of Las Vegas and Michael Steven Parks and wife Pamela of Winston-Salem; two stepgrandsons, Craig Roberts and wife Rebecca of Pleasant Garden and Keith Roberts and wife Sandy of High Point; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Advent Moravian Church, by the Rev. Tripp May. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of William D. Parks, 6044 Hedgerow Circle, Lewisville. PERRYMAN

Mr. Clyde Mayfield Perryman, 91, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Springwood Care of Forsyth. Mr. Perryman was born Feb. 26, 1909, in Davidson County to the late George Augustus and Mary Weisner Perryman. He lived most of his life in the Old Town community and was a member of Northwest Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucile Yarbrough Perryman; his second wife, Lois Bodenheimer Carter Perryman; and 11 brothers and sisters. He retired from Sealtest Dairies with over 40 years of service. Mr. Perryman is survived by his children, Carolyn Leinbach and husband Gray of Virginia Beach, Va., Dianne Wilson of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and David Perryman of Kernersville; two stepdaughters, Carol Johnson and husband Bill of Greensboro and Judy Petree and husband G.C. of Pfafftown; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Ruth Perryman of Winston-Salem; and his brothers-in-law, William Lawing, Enos Winfrey and Dick Yarbrough. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. A graveside service at Forsyth Memorial Park will be conducted by the Rev. Luther Morphis at 1 p.m. Thursday. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to RHA Health Services Inc., Guilford/Forsyth Counties, P.O. ROMINGER

Mrs. Ila Bowers Rominger, 88, formerly of 803 W. Clemmonsville Road, Winston-Salem, died early Tuesday morning, Jan. 9, 2001, at Silas Creek Manor. She was born Aug. 15, 1912, in Wilkes County to Colonel Young and Carrie Caudill Bowers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey C. Rominger. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Jo Ellen Rominger of Winston-Salem; a daughter and son-in-law, Ramona and Kermit Johnson of Winston-Salem; and a granddaughter, Karen Williams and husband Larry of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Union Ridge United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Danny Hauser. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 2306 W. Meadowview Road, No. 104, Greensboro, NC 27407.

SHUTT

Mrs. Myrtle Rose Shutt of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Jan. 7, 1912, in Yadkin County to Thomas and Nancy Swaim Rose. Mrs. Shutt was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Shutt; three brothers, John, Tommy and Marvin Rose; and four sisters, Ila Cockerham, Nova Roberson, Collie Clubb and Ola Speas. Surviving are three daughters, P. Gail Holmes, W. Kaye Shutt and Janice Bernard-Jordan, all of Winston-Salem; a sister, Lillie Allen; and three grandchildren, Alysha Gail Staten, William Edward Williams and wife, Frankie, and Doris Kaye Jordan. Stella Cockerham and several other nieces and nephews also survive along with her beloved dog, "Gigi." Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tom Bagnal officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and other times at the home of a daughter, Kaye Shutt, 3302 Konnoak Drive. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3627 Konnoak Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

SIDES

Mrs. Minnie Bedsaul Sides, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Sides was born Oct. 1, 1911, in Surry County to Pete Earl and Almedia Lowe. She was a lifetime member of Hopewell Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus B. Sides and her twin sister, Lillie Bedsaul Beckerdite. Surviving are two sons, Roger Eugene Sides and wife, Ann, and Ervin C. Sides; a daughter, Elaine Wind, and husband, Lute; five grandchildren, Vonda Sides Adams, Tony Sides and wife, Kim, Lisa Stafford and husband, Barry, and Joel and Clay Wind; three great-grandchildren, Anthony Sides, Matthews Adams and Brandon Stafford; and a sister, Lucy Lovelace. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hopewell Moravian Church with the Rev. Jeff Carter, the Rev. David Merritt and the Rev. Jack Nance officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. Memorials may be made to Hopewell Moravian Church, 715 Hopewell Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.

SPANN

JONESVILLE -- Mrs. Maxine W. Spann, 84, of Arlington Avenue passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. She was born June 21, 1916, in Yadkin County to the late William H. and Lela Haynes Wilkins. Mrs. Spann retired from Chatham Manufacturing with 43 years of service and was a member of Arlington First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Spann, in 1978 and two brothers, Burley H. Wilkins and Thomas H. Wilkins. Surviving are her sister, Juanita W. Benton of Jonesville; a brother, L.D. Wilkins of Jonesville; and several nieces and nephews, including Patricia (Devon) Weatherman of Jonesville, Vicki (Robert) Marsh of Statesville, Sylvia (Rusty) Chapman of Stony Point, Danny (Christine) Wilkins of Hamptonville, Lanny (Deverle) Wilkins of Jonesville, Benny (Kay) Wilkins of Hamptonville and Mrs. Josephine Justice of Washington, N.C. Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Arlington First Baptist Church, by the Rev. Flake Mason, the Rev. Bill Byrd and Dr. Leon Mikles. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville and other times at the home of her niece, Patricia Weatherman, 4537 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Arlington First Baptist Church, 345 S. Main St., Jonesville, NC 28642.

WHITMAN

Mr. Lawrence Ray Whitman Sr., 74, of 6676 Reynolda Road died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Whitman was born Dec. 19, 1926, to the late Robah J. and Nellie Speas Whitman. He lived all of his life in Forsyth County and was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge West Bend No. 434. Mr. Whitman is survived by his loving wife, Myrtle D. Whitman of the home; two sons, Lawrence Ray Whitman Jr. of Tobaccoville and Danny Gray Whitman of Tennessee; two stepsons; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dwight Cartner. The body will lie in state for one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church before the service. Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 4565 Wenlok Lane, Pfafftown, NC 27040.
